Marshal was sitting in his bed, checking over a few things on his laptop. He had been burning the candle at both ends a lot lately, keeping notes on any strange disturbances he and Coronamon had found in the Digital World, as well as staying on the lookout for colleges. Before he knew it, he'd be done with school, and would have to move on to the next phase. What did that mean for his future with Coronamon? What would he even end up doing, anyway? Other than music, which had really quickly come back into his life since reconnecting with Mitsuko, the young man didn't really have any other big ambitions.
So many questions were weighing on his mind at the moment that it was pretty understandable he'd be up so late. Not to mention the strange infection that a strange Digimon had left on Coronamon in a training accident involving Ryouta. Since then, the two of them had continued working on their Biomerge to stabilize it, and it seemed to be working just fine.
On top of all of this, Marshal had been spending time explaining a few things about Coronamon's son, Finn, to his mother. First off, how Coronamon had even made a child in the first place warranted some explanation. Second, the fact that he'd have to stay in the house for a little while. Christine North wasn't super happy at first, but figured that Coronamon was no trouble to have around the house, so one more couldn't hurt. Of course, that quickly changed when Finn immediately started eating the Norths out of house and home.
Marshal took a quick glance away from his computer screen and spotted the soft, warm light of Coronamon's tail and forehead at the foot of his bed. "Hey, bud," he said quietly. "What are you up to?"
"Oh, not much," Coronamon muttered, clearly groggy from just waking up. "Finn was having a little nightmare." He pointed over to the passed-out Guilmon, who looked a lot calmer.
Marshal frowned. Finn was technically his grandchild, in a weird way, which made him more protective of the big dragon. "Poor kid," he sighed. "I wonder what he could be having such awful dreams about?"
Coronamon shook his head. "I wish I knew. Speaking of things I wish I knew..." He seized an opportunity to jump up onto the bed and sit next to his partner. "You're still keeping things from me."
Marshal sighed. Coronamon hadn't given up this line of questioning ever since he thought he had sensed something hidden away in Marshal's emotions that time with Mitsuko. "Listen, Coronamon," he said, closing his laptop. The sudden decrease in light left the two in near darkness, only illuminated by Coronamon's flames. "I've told you enough times now, that was just me getting a little too into the piece I was playing. That happens with us musicians."
"You keep saying that, but it doesn't change what I felt," Coronamon answered back quickly. "We're partners, right? You know that you can always talk to me if something's bothering you."
"And I keep telling you, nothing's bothering me," Marshal repeated. "Now, you're really starting to make me upset by pestering me with this."
Coronamon frowned. "I don't understand-"
"There's nothing to understand!" Marshal shouted. "Just drop it! Not everything is a mystery that has to be solved!"
Coronamon reared back a bit, shocked at Marshal's sudden change in tone. It was rare for him to sound so angry. "...Right. Sorry, Marshal. I'll see you in the morning." The little lion Digimon slowly slunk off the bed and over to his spot next to Finn. As he drifted off to sleep, he could've sworn he heard some sort of dry heaving noise coming from Marshal, but figured he'd ignore it for now.
Meanwhile, Marshal was really starting to get torn up. Coronamon was right, after all. He had guessed correctly that Marshal had been hiding things from him emotionally for a long time. He had a lot of uncertanties and fears in his life that had started popping up recently due to his stature in the Digital World, and it was almost starting to get to be too much for him. This on top of trying to keep up with his final year of school had really drained him of everything he had. Of course, he didn't want anyone to know that he was scared. He had to be the positive face for everyone. If he wouldn't be, who would?
A single teardrop fell from Marshal's face and onto his pillow as he drifted off for the night.
