NPC RULES
Digimon, by nature, are fighters. Judging by the lengthy combat sections that some of our members write, I get the feeling that a lot of our members are too. However, all of the theoretical combat experience in the world doesn't mean much without the chance to let loose and test it out. At the same time, the Digital World is full of creative designs and characters that a single member will never have the chance to explore each in depth without making an incredible amount of characters. The NPC rules exist for both of these reasons; they allow you to get some fighting in against a one-off character, run by either a staff member or your fellow members.
In order to request an NPC, one simply needs to go to our NPC Request topic. Whether inserting them into a previously existing thread or setting up a brand new thread focused on this NPC, this is where any specifics, questions, and requests are written. In order to make this request, use the following template as a guideline:
Thread Name: The name of your thread.
Thread URL: The URL of your thread.
Digimon Request: You must include the Digimon's level. Any other details, from as general as Virus/Vaccine/Data to as specific as a particular Digimon type which you've had in mind, also go here. So do preferences such as whether you want the NPC to be a wild Digimon or human-associated, as well as if you want to allow or disallow custom Digimon.
Scenario: Some members have preferences for how they'd like the encounter to begin. Do you want a more peaceful Digimon, a fair challenge, an ambush? Describe that here.
Purpose: Is this a one-off combat thread, an egg hunt, a client for a job thread, or an important part of your character plot? Let us know the thread's role in your character's adventures.
Staff Preference: NPC writing is open to members as well, but we acknowledge some feel more comfortable working with staff. If you would strongly prefer a staff-run NPC over a member one, specify that here.
For Fun or For Glory: Describe the stakes of your NPC request, as described below.

FOR FUN
Not everyone who wants an NPC to appear in their thread is interested in stakes or rewards. Some just want to see which zany character swoops into their thread and mixes things up. If they win the fight, that's cool. If they lose the fight, oh well. What matters is that you had fun and diversified your threading experience. The For Fun NPC rules are an abridged version of the NPC rules with both the risk and reward removed, allowing members to focus on the NPC's impact in a thread without any pressure.
All NPCs included by the thread's creator are considered For Fun NPCs by default. This is for obvious reasons, as there isn't much potential for risk when fighting NPCs of your own creation. That idea is actually the foundation of the For Fun NPC system. However, just because the system is inspired by self-written NPCs doesn't mean that it has to focus on them. It can get stale fighting yourself, after all, and sometimes you want to capture that same casual spirit with another user behind the driver's seat. Any member can apply to your For Fun NPC request. This can be a valuable opportunity for lower level members to get a handle on the site's combat systems in a low-pressure environment.
Generally staff will not take For Fun NPC requests, unless staff are specifically requested for a more important topic such as a Digimental hunt or job thread. We have a lot on our plate as is, and if tasked upon for NPCs we will generally prioritize ones that require careful balancing and stakes. However, if there isn't much duty on our shoulders and we're looking for a chance to decompress with an easy thread, who knows? We might just pop in.
Posting a For Fun NPC is simple, as due to the lowered stakes there isn't nearly as much busywork that needs to go into writing their description. Just follow this simple template in order to come up with your NPC:
NPC: The Digimon who you are using as an NPC.
NPC Picture: A picture of the Digimon that you are using. Not all members are familiar with all Digimon, so this is helpful for ensuring you're giving them what they want. If your NPC is a custom, you can use a ten sentence description instead.
Attribute: Whether a Digimon is Virus, Vaccine, or Data.
Family: Whether a Digimon is Dragon's Roar, Nature Spirits, Deep Savers, Wind Guardians, Metal Empire, Jungle Troops, Virus Busters, Nightmare Soldiers, or Dark Area.
Type: What kind of Digimon the Digimon is.
Combat Ability: A short summary of what the Digimon is capable of in combat. This doesn't need to be as formally created as a proper app is, but please keep to the site's combat rules! This can be a five-sentence summary or a few simple attacks, depending on preference.
Personality and Details: Describe the personality of a Digimon, as well as any relevant details, in a simple five-sentence summary.
NPC: NPC Picture: Attribute: Family: Combat Ability: Personality and Details:
If you post your For Fun app, and a member picks you to join their thread, then all that's left to do is come join the fun! All NPC threads are made under your account, so you get to keep any posts and bits you earn while threading as the NPC. We hope that this mild incentive is a suitable reward for your time, effort, and creativity.

FOR GLORY
While this new system is intended to increase engagement with the NPC system on a casual level, we don't want to leave the original NPC system in the dust. In contrast to the more relaxed pace of For Fun NPCs, a For Glory NPC is designed to be a true test of skill. The NPC writer will pull no punches (within the restraints of the combat rules, of course) in trying to have their NPC defeat yours. This is, in essence, what the DFRP NPC system is all about; fight or flight, with your hard-earned posts and bits on the line.
Due to the increased level of difficulty and presence of actual rewards, For Glory NPCs have a few constraints that For Fun NPCs don't. The first is that you cannot directly request a Digimon to fight. You can make suggestions, but it is up to the NPC writer how strongly they will take your suggestions. The second is that only the staff sees the Digimon's combat abilities, not you. This is to ensure fairness in battle and limit the potential for metagaming. The third is that only members of Champion rank or higher can run a For Glory NPC. This way we can ensure that members with more site experience, both in and out of combat, are the ones taking on this higher level of NPC responsibility.
Due to the stakes, For Glory NPCs are also more limited in amount than For Fun NPCs. Each member may only make one For Glory NPC request at a time, and may also only take on one For Glory NPC request at a time. This way, no member gets too bogged down either writing as or writing against NPCs to actually focus on the rest of their threads. Staff are the exception, and may take on as many NPC requests as they deem appropriate.
A final, important rule: no collusion allowed. The rewards behind this system are calibrated with the intent of fairness between all participants. While it is one thing to lose, it is another thing entirely to specifically engineer a loss for grinding purposes. If any member is caught taking a dive to give their friend a better reward, their rewards will be forfeit and both will be banned from engaging with the site's NPC system for a month. Repeat offenses risk making this NPC ban permanent.
Posting a For Glory NPC is much the same as a For Fun NPC. The main difference is the combat ability section, which requires a full set of developed and staff-approved attacks. These must follow the attack rules in our combat guidelines in the same way as any other app, and we will be screening them very closely. Send a PM with your NPC's species and attacks to Bonetrousled, and I will repost them in the staff forum for us to privately look over.
Once these attacks are looked at by a staffer, we will give you the okay to post up your NPC app. Afterwards, just follow this simple template in order to come up with your NPC:
Personality and Details: Describe the personality of a Digimon, as well as any relevant details, in a simple five-sentence summary.

Finally, the part I know you've all been waiting for; the For Glory rewards section! After beating an NPC, you're always able to skim a little bit of surface data off of them. This is data that has leaked out through battle wounds, allowing you to strengthen your Digimon's form without necessarily needing to drain a Digimon entirely.
Be careful, though! If you lose the fight, you lose an equivalent amount of posts in surface data. This occurs whether you retreat safely or not. If you don't retreat safely, worse may lie in store for you . . .
This baseline reward is as follows:
Rookie: 5 posts. Champion: 10 posts. Ultimate: 15 posts. Mega: 20 posts. Super Mega: 25 posts.
From there, you have a few other options. One is to drain a Digimon's data in its entirety, loading as much of it as possible in a data-hungry craze. This provides twice the posts that the standard drain option does. It will also reduce the Digimon to an egg (if you're not a jerk) or load them entirely in a form of permanent death (if you are). In order to prevent strain on your Digimon's core, you may only take this option once per month. However, it is a once per month supplement that can be a significant help for boosting your character's postcount.
The second option is to load any bits that your opponent may have had stored. What? They may look like monsters, but they're civilized! This can be anything from a friendly bet made at the start of a fight to looting through the fallen spoils of a fleeing opponent. Much like the postcount rewards, these are based upon the level of the defeated Digimon. The only limit to how many bit rewards you can earn is how many fights you can win. These rewards are as follows:
Rookie: 2000 bits. Champion: 4000 bits. Ultimate: 6000 bits. Mega: 8000 bits. Super Mega: 10000 bits.
Finally, the most unique opportunity you can get from winning a fight is an opportunity to load a new move. This is a drain from a Digimon's core itself, taking a bit of their data and integrating it with your own. The Digimon itself will be left mostly unharmed (or, if you prefer, very harmed), but you'll have a shiny new toy to play around with free of charge.
There are a few constraints on these loaded moves to keep in mind. The first is that you may only load a move which you've seen an enemy Digimon perform. That Birdramon which you've killed could have an awesome exploding dive bomb attack, but you won't know until you've seen it. For this reason, it can be beneficial, albeit risky, to draw out fights until you see a technique you like. The second is that your Digimon must be capable of at least channeling the move. A wingless Digimon won't be able to use a wing slap, and a Meramon would probably hurt itself more than anyone else trying to use an ice move. The third is that you can only download moves equal to your Digimon's level.
You may download up to two moves per form. Any further than that, and the amount of foreign data in your Digimon's core threatens to rip them apart.
Thankfully, if your Digimon is able to safely disengage from a fight, it only has to worry about losing surface data. If a fight ends in a more decisive loss, though, it runs the risk of having any of these three effects happening to it. Think of it as going double or nothing; you might be able to score a comeback win if you make your last stand, but you might also end up losing twice as hard. We are not a death enabled site. Death is not an acceptable consequence for losing an NPC fight (unless you choose willingly to die, you weirdo), and having your data drained will not regress your partner as it does NPCs. In addition, no matter how many posts are drained from you, you cannot lose the level that you are currently at. A Mega cannot be brought below 300 posts, for example, even if it loses fight after fight.
Rewards exist for the member running the NPC, too. If the NPC loses or is fled from, they gain the base reward as per the Digimon in question's level. If the NPC wins decisively, however, they can choose to keep either the bonus post count or bit reward for themselves. We want to thank our NPC writers for their hard work whether they win or lose, but at the same time we want to give a proper incentive towards actually going for the win.
Once a fight is over, whether winning or losing, simply make a post in the thread stating the winner and saying which reward is claimed. This way we'll be able to edit your profile with the reward as quickly as possible!
Whether fighting for risks and rewards, or just looking for ways of spicing up your story, NPCs can add a lot to your threads and help make the Digital World a far bigger place. We hope you enjoy this chance to square off with Digimon of all kinds.

FOR HONOR
Fighting with your neck on the line is one thing, but what about Digimon who want to fight purely for the sport of it? Well, then maybe you want to fight For Honor! The NPCs for this work and survive as participants of the Infinity Colosseum, and they would love a challenge. Unlike 'For Glory', no posts are on the line, and there is a Digimon on the field to act as both referee and final decision-maker in these fights.
But of course, a few constraints apply here - largely the same as 'For Glory' rules. First, you cannot request a Digimon to fight, though you can make suggestions or attempt to issue a challenge to a known fighter. Second, only staff sees the Digimon's combat abilities - its not like your character would have much of a reason to know! And the third is that only members of Champion rank or higher can run a For Honor NPC.
Additionally, as above, each member can only make one 'For Honor' NPC at a time, and may only take one 'For Honor' NPC at a time - staff excluded from the second requirement. As far as making the requests, assuming the fights take less than a month, these requests are limited to one a month.
And of course, no collusion! Same deal as above for 'For Glory',
Just to re-iterate, For Honor NPCs will use the same template as For Glory - repeated for your convenience here. The only additional thing to note here is that the level of the Digimon in this request is equal to the participant. No-one's going to show up to a Wargreymon kicking around a Wormmon, so keep that in mind!
Personality and Details: Describe the personality of a Digimon, as well as any relevant details, in a simple five-sentence summary.
NPC: NPC Picture: Attribute: Family: Personality and Details:
Alright, you may be asking: if this is all the same as 'For Glory', why does this section exist? Well, here's where things get different: you can't load data or obtain posts, but fighting in a sanctioned event is a decent way to get notoriety - and notoriety comes in sweet payment. On winning a fight, the rewards are doled as follows:
Rookie: 2000 Bits Champion: 4000 Bits Ultimate: 6000 Bits Mega: 8000 Bits Super Mega: 10000 Bits
If you lose? Fear not, the Colosseum appreciates your efforts, and will reward you with 1/4th of the bits you would have received!
Of course, fighting in a tournament setting can also bring upon alternate rule-sets, available by request of the player! Remember oh-so-long-ago when I mentioned a fair referee? Well, see below for the Infinity Colosseum's Standard Rules!
1) The first Digimon to reach a score of five points wins. 2) One point is awarded for clean hits - hits that manage to land that 'cause damage', meaning they were not blocked or dodged. Barrages of bullets do not count for multiple hits - one hit per 'named' technique! 3) One point is awarded for knockdowns - hits by the opponent that manage to cause the opponent to fall. In effect, this means 2 points are scored. Neither fighter is permitted to attack until the 'fallen' fighter is standing. 4) In the case the fallen fighter cannot stand after a '10' count, the standing fighter wins regardless of the score. Additionally, if a fighter concedes or is deemed unable to continue by the referee, the opposing fighter wins.
And, that's it! Simple enough, but at request, different terrain can be loaded for the fight, or additional restrictions can be added:
No flight? No assistance by tamers? No cards? You have to Digivolve downwards every other turn? The choice is yours! You can also choose to fight without the Standard Rules in place - the crowd loves to see a bloodbath, on occasion!
Once a fight is over, whether winning or losing, simply make a post in the thread stating the winner and saying which reward is claimed. This way we'll be able to edit your profile with the reward as quickly as possible!
Despite some saying otherwise, well, Digimon seem to be built for combat, and there are definitely Digimon in the world that revel in it. Enjoy the Colosseum!
