Despite it being a sunny day, Kuu found it hard to motivate himself to do anything. Sitting on a couch cushion, the pipefox watched television, making occasional squeaks as the main character made obvious mistakes. "No! No! Go left! You're going the wrong way!" Giving a small flail, a bang emitted from the TV, and dying sounds were made, before the screen began to dim, and an announcer began to ramble about 'what will happen next time' on the show. Cheeks puffed, while staring at the screen. That was a terrible way to end an episode! Who did cliffhangers like that?
With his show over, and nobody home, the Digimon tried to decide what he should do next. He could always take a walk! But, last time, someone almost stepped on him. It was always a safety hazard, being such a small creature! What else was there for him to do? Trying to think of activities, when everyone else was busy or lived in a different city, was hard! And, it wasn't like he could really just walk to the other cities! It was always dangerous to travel alone, and the train rides were alway so boring! There was no winning with his options, here!
Deciding to check the mail, while figuring out what to do, the Kudamon scurried to his door. Hopping up, he pulled on a cloth attached to the handle, and began to run outside, toward the mailbox. "Eep!" Only a short charge from the entryway, the fox found his face smashed into the side of a large, cardboard box. With a shake of the head, Kuu began patting the item rapidly. "What's this?" Sure, it's a box! But, what was inside it? There was no return address on it, only labeling for it to be delivered to the Kudamon's home! "I didn't order anything," he mumbled, giving the box a good thwap with his paw. Oh! Did it just move a little?
Thwap! Bap-bap! Thud!
Okay, yeah, it was totally moving! Or, maybe Kuu was just shaking the box a lot! Deciding to further the investigation inside, he scuttled around the box, and began to slide it from the top step into the doorway. "This is heavy," he whined to himself, as the box barely budged with each shove. After several moments of his neighbors judging him, but refusing to help, the Kudamon managed to get the box far enough into his house and close the door.
Now, what was he supposed to do with this? He really hadn't ordered anything! So, was it really okay to open this? Eh, sure. It was addressed to Kuu, anyway! Not many people shared his name! Dragging a claw down the tape, he popped the flaps open, and peered inside. "Um," he uttered, trying to process what he was staring at, "is this a prank?"
Was there a person inside his box? There weren't air holes! And, it certainly wasn't a Digimon that Kuu had ever seen before! At least, not in real life! "Are you alive?" In his box, a blonde haired girl was curled up, either sleeping or dead. It was like one of those creatures off of some strange TV series! Surely, she couldn't be real, right? "Maybe, this is how they get those weird show ideas." There had to be something that made people think of weird 'monsters' that didn't belong in real life! Or! Maybe Kuu had won a contest and got a doll based on one of them! Except, that was kind of creepy, and Kuu hadn't entered any contests aside from the one that involved going to the moon!
Needless to say, he did not win the contest for the moon.
"Do you have tea? Or coffee?"
Looking back at the box, the blonde was now sitting up, wearing what seemed to be a school uniform of some sort. Okay, definitely not a large doll! Was it even legal to mail people? Or, to own them? What if Kuu had somehow been dragged into an illegal organization? He was a law-abiding citizen, darn it!
"Hello?"
Oh, right! The thing was talking to him! "Yes," he nodded, without making any move toward the kitchen.
The girl waited, patiently, while bringing her knees up to her chin, creating a little more space in the box. "Can you bring me some?"
Well, that explained the question! "Sure," he agreed, before slinking off to put on some water. While waiting for it to reach the proper temperature, the fox thought over his new box, and the contents. Wait. Was she safe to be left alone like that? What if she got into stuff that he didn't want her to, unsupervised? What if she ate his stash of cookies?! Could she even eat? Sure, she wanted tea, but that wasn't really a food! Once tea was made, the fox balanced the tray on top of his head, while skillfully bouncing back into the living room. Once there, the Kudamon leaned for the strange being to pull the tea off of its tray before anything could spill. "Here ya go!"
Taking the drink, the girl barely waited to even check the temperature, before beginning to drink it. Pausing after the first sip, she notified, "it's hot." Of course it was! The fox had just made it! Was she dense or something?! Still in the box, the teen glanced around the home.
"So! I don't want to be rude, but you're in my house! And I don't know what you are!" Since when had Kuu ever really cared about being rude before? Well, it probably started when a mysterious creature literally got mailed to him! He didn't know what she was capable of! What if she had a really bad temper? Or laser eyes?! That could be dangerous!
Warming her hands on the sides of the cup, the girl stared at the Kudamon as if he had sprouted a second head. "I'm Maia. I'm a human."
Giving a nod, the Kudamon hummed, "oh! Well, now that we've figured that out, everything's great! But, what's a human?"
Oh, this was going to take a long time to explain, wasn't it? Why couldn't there be someone else present for this entire reveal, that knew about humans to begin with? "Me," was the very informative answer that was provided, before the girl rose from her box, dusting off her uniform. It was actually pretty weird that she wore a uniform like that. She was in a box! Did box-humans have box-schools, too? Maybe, he'd have to learn about this. Box-schools could be pretty awesome, instead of regular old, lame Digi-School!
"D'you come with a user manual?" Kuu questioned, with a tilt of his head. She really did look like one of those magical girl things from television! Maybe she could grant wishes, or something! "I dunno what to do with you." Except, of course, use her to reach the top shelf. Why did Kuu have to live someplace with tall shelving units? It was a pain!
Shaking her head, the blonde looked in the cardboard box. "No user manual. But, I have this thing," she commented, while pulling out a blue-gripped device, and offering it to the small creature. "If you use it, I can be stronger."
Stronger. That didn't make sense. Was she implying that she was already strong? This was concerning. Or exciting! Kuu couldn't tell! Maybe she was meant for fighting! Or, just at lifting Kudamon-sized things and carrying them around all day! Gasp! She could be used like a vehicle! Taking the item, he flipped it over in his paws. "So, what do I do with you?"
"I don't know. Adventure? Or, nothing. Nothing is fine, too." Oh, come on. Even this world's Maia couldn't be too interested in adventuring! It's just not a plausible part of her personality! "In fact, if we could just watch--"
"Did you say adventure?" Oh no. Here was the start of something that was probably going to be awful! "We can go on adventures?"
Furrowing her brow, Maia slowly parted her lips to answer. "Yeah. Humans are kind of built for solving any problems on the way. But, I really don't mind if we just--"
No, Maia, you're not getting out of this as easily as you'd hope! "Adventures! Let's go on them! Now!" It looked like she was going to be stuck with a hyperactive partner for the rest of her life! Was it too late to mail herself back home?
Probably. What a problem. Now she was going to be stuck going on adventures that she didn't even want to participate in! It wasn't like she had wanted to be a hero, or anything! But, throwing a glance back at the box, her fate was confirmed. A return address wasn't listed on the item. Ugh. That meant she was doomed to eternity with this thing!
"You know what would be great for adventures?" Kuu started, giving a thoughtful look toward the kitchen. "Cookies. You should go make them."
Yes. This was definitely going to be a long partnership.
