This MPC is based on the Videogame Nightmare prompt, which I'll be doing solo.
"Good morning, Crono!"
Owen opened his eyes and gave a loud yelp as he saw a human woman that looked like Vegeta in drag opening the curtains.
"W-who are you?!" he asked, the Gaomon rubbing his eyes to make sure he wasn't still asleep.
"...Who are you?" the human asked, blinking back at him.
"I'm Owen" the blue dog digimon explained. The human blinked, then looked awkwardly out the window.
"...shit, I'm in the wrong house aren't I?" she asked, then quickly retreated out of his room. Owen blinked after her. Well... that was strange.
But, this seemed to be the place that Owen was in now. He yawned, climbing out of bed, dressed in his usual standard outfit of a green tunic and... nothing else. Oh well, at least he was a digimon so there was no reason for pants or anything like that. He looked out the window, to see a cosy little village of about ten timber and thatch buildings. Ah, yes, the place of his youth. And, going by the headband on his head, he was also a ninja, apparently.
So then. What incarnation of his life was this, the Gaomon wondered? Perhaps by walking downstairs, he would find out?
As he descended, he instantly smelled something burning. And- what? JESMON CHRIST MODE! THE STOVE WAS ON FIRE!
This weird woman that thought he was this kid called Crono had really thought this was her house didn't she? And she had been cooking and didn't even have the decency to turn the stove off? Well... it was a wood fire stove so he supposed that was a thing, but, yeesh. That awful woman had been cooking his food and ruined it. Damn it. Well, supposing that he had no other choice, Owen decided to leave the house and proceed toward the cafe where he could hopefully buy his breakfast.
Well then. Owen left the house and entered the overworld. Thankfully there was no random encounters in the village, so he entered the cafe without a scratch. He approached the Yukidarumon server with a smile.
"Hi there, I was just wondering, could I please buy some breakfast?" he asked.
"But of course" Yukidarumon replied. "How much do you have?"
Right, money. Owen reached into his tunic pocket, and realized there was nothing there. Holy shit, did this woman that thought he was Crono rob him too?
"Uh... oh dear" Owen said, the Gaomon lowering his head with a sigh.
"Hm... Well, not to worry, we make sure to pay those that prove themselves useful" Yukidarumon said. "And indeed, for such a strong ninja dog like you, a task would not appear insurmountable, right?"
"Er... I guess?" Owen said hesitantly. He hoped that he wasn't being going to be sent on a fetch quest or anything like that. He was proven wrong five seconds later.
"To cook breakfast, I need [5 pieces of dry firewood]" Yukidarumon said, making sure the required items were in square brackets for extra emphasis. "And it was raining last night, so these may be trickier to find than it seems".
'Aw crap' Owen thought. "Well, alright, I'll try I guess" he said. So then. It seemed his first quest was set. The Gaomon had little choice but to rush into the forest to find said pieces of firewood.
Owen pressed forth into the woods, on the lookout for some firewood. Well, this was a big pain. The Yukidarumon wasn't kidding about it being damp, almost every spare bit of wood he found was soaked through and useless for making fire for at least a day.
After about an hour, Owen was really starting to feel kind of frustrated. No dry firewood, no food to fill his empty belly, and it seemed, no bouts of good luck.
Then things got worse when checking a rotted log for any dry parts, he turned around and saw a Goblimon.
"Oh hi there, did you enjoy looking at my butt?" he drawled, in no mood to be polite at this stranger, who hadn't even bothered to greet him.
"Hi. I'm a mook. I'm programmed to destroy adventurers like you. With arrows to the knee... I mean, clubs" he brandished his.
"Right" Owen sighed. Fine. Might as well throw down. Maybe his club could work as firewood?
Tired and hungry, Owen was in no condition to fight this guy, but, out of seemingly nowhere, a black cloud flew out of nowhere and struck the Goblimon's eyes.
"Aaagh! I can't see!" he screamed, swishing the air uselessly. Then, moments later, a fireball flew at him, exploding and knocking him out cold.
"...okay, who did that?" Owen asked, rather spooked by all this. Then, from the bushes, an upbeat musical theme played, and following that, two more digimon appeared - one wearing a black and purple doublet, and the other wearing a blue and white one. An Impmon and an Elecmon.
"Us of course!" the Impmon said, giving a pose. "Black Mage Edphonse at your service here. And this is my brother, Alward the White Mage".
"Hiya" Alward said, waving. "So... going by that outfit, you're a ninja, eh?"
"Er, yeah I guess" Owen said. "Thanks for helping me there. I'm Owen".
"Ah, Owen, eh?" Edphonse asked, grinning. "Nice to see someone appreciates the fashion of clothes above and no pants, heh heh".
"Er... well... seeing as I have big feet, claws and a tail, guess pants can't really be a thing?" Owen said, sweatdropping. Man this Edphonse guy liked to flirt a lot. Wait... Edphonse could use fire. Maybe he could help him? "Ah, sorry to bother you especially after what you've done to help so far, but, I was wondering if you could maybe help me dry some wood for fire?"
"Ahh, is that so?" Edphonse asked, smirking in the way of a digimon that saw something to gain from this. Owen hoped he wouldn't have to do certain favours for him. "Well then, we could do that, for a price".
Just as Owen was fearing. "Okay... what is the price?" he asked, dreading the worst.
"Could you add us to your party?" Alward asked. "Honestly it's really lonely in these woods, we've been offscreen for so many years and it'd be nice to be able to participate in a story sometime".
Just that? Owen exhaled with relief. "Sure, you can do that" he said, smiling. "So, guess we're gonna go on adventures together?"
"Guess so, not like we got much better to do" Edphonse shrugged. And so a triumphant little jingle played. Now then, the firewood. Edphonse warmed the damp firewood Owen had collected so far so that they were dry. And finally the 5 pieces of [Firewood] were given to Yukidarumon.
"Ohh thank you" she said. "As much as I love the cold, my customers don't like it so much. And now with firewood at last, I can retire, because I have it listed as a workplace hazard! Goodbye!"
Owen stared as she promptly left. Wow, that was... weird. She was promptly replaced by a Flamedramon.
"Hello! What can I get you?" he asked.
"Uh... all I want is some breakfast please" Owen admitted.
"Of course! That'll be 30 bits!" he said. Owen sighed. All of this had been for nothing.
"Here, I'll pay" Edphonse said. "Such a cute guy shouldn't go hungry, heh heh".
Owen was honestly touched by that. Both emotionally, and, well, physically as Edphonse patted his butt. Well, he supposed it wasn't something too objectionable. The main thing was that he'd get breakfast soon! Huzzah.
And so, soon after, he, Edphonse and Alward were seated at a table, enjoying sausages, pancakes and fruit juice for breakfast. Owen felt the morning was probably worth it now that he had gained so much. Breakfast and friends!
After finishing, the three soon left the cafe. "Right! Where to next?" Alward asked, clasping his paws and rubbing them excitedly.
"Well, I could show you my house" Owen began.
"Ooh, sounds neat" Edphonse grinned, obviously getting ideas. Owen wished he wouldn't be so forward. But there was some charm about him that made him decide to not ask him to stop flirting. Owen wasn't one to turn down fun after all.
And so they strode toward Owen's house... and it turned out it was all gone. Burned to the ground. "What the...?" Owen gasped, stepping toward it. Was this the work of that woman who thought he was someone called Crono?!
"Oh, no..." Alward said, stepping forward. On top of the pile of ash, he found a note. "It's written from someone called the Green Witch" he said, reading it. Owen and Edphonse did so too. The note was stating that Owen was born with a destiny to defeat her master, so therefore she would destroy him and everything he holds dear. Unless of course he could stop her first.
"Who is this Green Witch?" Owen asked. "And where can we find her?"
"I don't know..." Alward said, putting a paw to his chin. "It sounds familiar though. Maybe we should ask someone?"
"Quick! To the Greenwich Observatory!" Edphonse declared. Alward did an anime stagger. Well then, after all that, it seemed this party of three digimon friends were set off to find out the true meaning of Owen's destiny. And since this story has now probably passed the minimum word count, it can be just left to say that it followed and subverted many tropes before Owen's adventures and true destiny as a Mystical Ninja were fulfilled. Would they be covered in a future MPC? I hope so. But for now, this is...
