Looking at a spirit evolution first-hand was always an interesting experience, especially since this one resulted in the user actually becoming smaller. What wasn't a surprise was Gotsumon's overall personality; even if her voice had changed a bit, it was as rough and direct as always.
Amelie gazed at her, considering those statements before offering a piece on her own. "I think Catherine doesn't want for you to have a bad time or something. She just wants to... live a normal life, I guess? She doesn't look like a bad person, even if..." She had one (or more) screws loose, to put it bluntly. Everyone seemed to be aware of that one. Making sure to not get her arm dislocated by the digimon's strong shake, the brunette raised an eyebrow at her attempt to... a set up? Weird. "Nice to meet you, Gotsumon. Maybe this will be a little rough, but I don't think my brother is interested in any of you. Not to say your partner probably has enough problems as of yet to add a relationship on top of them."
Mostly because he was way older than Catherine, and Gotsumon wasn't a human. And she hadn't even begun to mention how much of a jerk Tobi could be. Not a good mix.
In all honesty, she felt a measure of sympathy towards Gotsumon. She just felt lonely and wanted company, and that was something perfectly understandable. Still, Amy had made a promise, and was willing to see it through. "The person you gotta convince isn't me. You know that one more than well enough." The brunette said, a stern expression on her face. "I'm not the type that backs out from her promises, and I know for sure that girl would be devastated if I did something as foul as to betray her trust."
Still, Amy wanted to do something to help out Gotsumon too. Hmmm. "Maybe if you were nicer to Catherine, she'd be more receptive to this kind of stuff? I know for sure she didn't appreciate what you did for her in the classroom or the restroom. Maybe you can come to a truce of sorts? If you prove to be nice enough, I'm sure she could be more accepting to the next spirits. You're stuck with each other for life, after all. Could at least try to get along well. Or..."
She had an idea. But it was a bad one, better to just not mention it for now. Yeah, that was for the best. "Nevermind."

"She's a real jerk though. She needs to learn that a normal life is one of the most dull things you could imagine. I was just a farmer, as previously mentioned and it was dull with a capital D. Every morning I'd wake up, I'd take the ham out of the ground, clean it off, put it back, test a meat apple, see if it's ripe, chase off any stupid kids trying to get free brautwursts. Where do you humans get meat from anyways? Carrie kept trying to tell me you kill things but that's just stupid. Anyways, I digress, she needs a good kick in the pants to get going ahead. Quit college, tell her parents off, head to the Digital World and become a merc or something."
Gotsumon let Amelie talk about her brother then her suggestions on Carrie. "Being nice? Why should I be nice when she treats me like I'm some horrible monster that should be locked in an attic? She thinks I'm the worst thing that's ever happened to her while I'm the one shackled to a kid who can't even work up the guts to tell the guy at the burger place they gave her a medium instead of a large. I used to fight, to save lives and take land, now I'm here." She stopped digging, shaking her head and picking up a rock, the small piece of sediment rolling into her body and joining her own form. Behind the rock was a small hole that lead into a cavern. "Go nuts kid. I might as well just wait for Carrie to die naturally and come back then."

Man, this was probably a lost cause. Gotsumon's lack of empathy was almost... disturbing, in all honesty. If anything, her arguments made decisively take a stance at her peer's side. "You know that you're being a real hypocrite, right?" She said, her tone sounding slightly miffed. "You just said you had you lived a normal life before becoming a spirit, yet blame another person for wanting to live one? That's totally unfair."
She couldn't count on a digimon to understand human nature, but this was just... too much. "Buuut now that you don't have to worry about having to eat, earn your keep or anything that digimons normally do, you wanna live a life of adventure and stuff. Not selfish at all, amirite? Unlike you, we humans only get one chance at living life, so excuse me if we just want to live in relative tranquility." Maybe she had taken it a biiit too personal? Yeah, that was probably the case, but Gotsumon's arguments sounded like the mix between the laments of a spinster who wanted to be a teenager again and a small child amid a temper tantrum. The lack of maturity they had was simply off-putting. "And we do get our meat from killing other living beings, if you still had any doubts about it."
Wishing for a person's death was the straw that broke the camel's back, more or less. Trying to reason with Gotsumon was probably a lost cause, and the brunette was already pretty angry at the situation, so she just decided to get into the hole in order to retrieve the damned spirit already. The idle question on the place she'd keep floated right into her mind on that moment, however. Maybe her digivice could accept it? She doubted she could spirit evolve using it, but at least there it'd be safe from anyone trying to snatch it.

"I hated every single moment of it, kid." She said. "It was a horrible, soul-grinding life where you'd go to bed with the only thought being that you'd do it all over again the next day with the rare exception of going to market and risk being scammed and robbed. Do you know where Carrie's gonna end up if she stays in your precious school system? Stuck in some crappy job that she's overqualified for while she could have gone to the digital world, where jobs are literally created every second! I quit the moment that battle was won, that meat farm is probably owned by some noname veggiemon living in his own personal dead-end hell! I don't want Carrie to live that life, especially in the human world where it's even less interesting! Safety and excitement are almost always mutually exclusive, and if you want to live in some 5 by 5 apartment watching some cartoon about people living better lives than you, go right ahead, but if I'm stuck with Carrie I'm going to make sure she doesn't regret getting hitched to some bozo salaryman and his ugly children!"
By this point Gotsumon was clearly projecting.

Had Amelie been calm, she probably wouldn't have responded to Gotsumon in this way, but the digimon's words just... irritated her. The degree of self-righteousness and stubbornness displayed by her were hard to match. Heck, probably impossible for the teenager.
That didn't mean she wouldn't argue back, though.
"Oh yeah? Then what if she actually graduates with honors and lives her life free of any dumb obligation, working at something she actually wants to do instead of being pushed around like a doll? She's fucking brilliant; did you know that? Thought not, given how self-absorbed in your adventuring fantasies you are!" At this point, her cheeks were slightly red from anger, and her breath were more or less ragged huffs. "And I'm sure she'll get to bloom into an amazing person, despite not being all that whole upstairs. She just needs somebody believing in her instead of just trying to get her to abandon her life and trying something else. And guess what? You're not helping!"
Maybe she was getting too worked up at this? Probably, but she had her reasons; this situation was awfully familiar. "So if you want for her to live the life you want for her, by all means just go ahead. If you were a true friend, however, you'd help her to stand on her own two feet and decide for herself. I don't have anything else to say to you."
Slowly exhaling, she just decided to forget about this whole deal and get inside the cave already. What was inside the cave, anyway? Would she find the spirit or not?

Gotsumon fell silent, not in the mood to continue this girl's argument. Inside the cavern was a well crafted tomb, walls covered in medieval style portraits of Digimon and grand battles. Urns filled with ashes of fallen warriors and hollowed walls filled with (what were more than likely fake) skeletons laying with swords and shields. The second she stepped inside, the torches on the walls lit up, leading down a long hallway. Gotsumon followed her inside, probably thinking very bad things about her tamer's new human companion. At the end of the hall was an ancient looking set of Knightmon holding a sword and sporting a long, long beard. His armor was rusted a dull brown, as was his sword. He breathed deeply and slowly as the two approached him, looking them over.
"It's probably fake, these guys are just made of armor." Gotsumon finally said. "You the next spirit of metal?" She asked. The knight did not answer. "Probably can't hear us... ARE YOU THE SPIRIT OF METAL?" She asked again, louder. "I am the spirit of metal-" He had an old, dusty voice that was barely audible. "Excellent, take it into the device an-" Gotsumon said, satisfied. "'s keeper. I keep her totem safe." He continued, stepping on Gotsumon's lines. "She was very specific that she would only go with those worthy. What is you and your partner's name, young child?"

At least she had managed for Gotsumon to shut up; that was for the better, she guessed. Otherwise, they just risked fighting against each other ad nauseam, and that probably wasn't what anybody wanted. Better if they just got the spirit and left.
But wouldn't be that easy, it seemed. Now they were in some kind of... tomb? It was kinda weird, since digimon didn't left physical remains, and the skeletons looked a bit too fake for her comfort. Still, if this was the jam of whatever decided to hide the spirit in this place, she'd bear with it.
Just like she'd bear with the... surprising resident that happened to be the keeper of the spirit of metal, much to Gotsumon's dismay. Apparently, there was some kind of challenge associated with this thing? Oh well, she'd have to bear with it. "Name's Amelie, and this is Gotsumon. We have to test our worth, don't we? Then, how that one is gonna be tested? What kind of trait does the spirit find desirable on its potential owners?"

He nodded and opened a side-room filled with chalices of all shapes and sizes. "She was a digimon of faith, following the word of her religion to the letter. To continue farther, you must drink from the correct chalice..." "This seems a bit familiar..." Gotsumon mumbled. "But if you get the wrong chalice, you will be sent to the Dark area, and almost certain death." The knightmon's movements were clunky and hard to follow, probably because of all his rust. "Let Yggdrasil guide you, my child, and your spirit will surely come to you." All over the room the grails, cups, mugs, and shot glasses sat on pedestals... lots and lots of pedestals. There were possible hundreds of them all around, made from gold, silver, copper, jewels, you name a precious element you could probably find it there. "Do... do we get a hint?" Gotsumon asked. "No." He said, bluntly. "If you succeed you go to the next test and from there the totem will be yours."

Well, this was getting weirder by the second. They had to find the correct chalice among... what seemed like a dragon's hoard, now? Well, talk about difficult. Worst part is that they didn't even have a hint or something that'd help them get the right one. Just how in tarnation...?
Oh right, they did have a tool that could help them get the correct chalice. And like it or not... Gotsumon had it. "Well, seems like our best chance is to use... Catherine's D-Tector in order to get through this pile of junk? Maybe her digivice will show us which one will be the one that gets us to the totem. Because otherwise..."
She was out of ideas, besides picking the first cup they stumbled upon and drinking from it. Experience told her that would end badly so... better if they just went with the safe bet. Dying wasn't on her plans for today.

Gotsumon frowned. "Of course, I just got out and now I gotta..." She mumbled and grumbled, huffed and puffed, but eventually she took out the D-tector and, vanishing in a flash of light, let Carrie take her body back. "Ugh... I heard what happened." She said, shaking her head and trying to stay steady. "Thanks for sticking up for me." She gave Amelie a small, but warm smile and looked at the seeming piles of priceless archeological artifacts. "Wow... it seemed like there was a lot more through Gotsumon's eyes." She admitted, looking at her d-tector. The radar beeped and beeped steadily, then pointed away from the room full of cups and artifacts. Behind the two on the wall where they'd come in was a rather dinky looking wine glass that had a chip in it.
"Well." The knightmon said, looking at the girl that now stood before him. "Congratulations. Many digimon fail this puzzle. Good thinking outside of the box." He complimented. "...Is her name Gotsumon too or...?" "No, I'm Catherine. I prefer to be called Carrie though..." "Ah, Lady Catherine, a heavenly name. Walk this way to your next chamber." The knightmon began moving again, and Gotsumon snickered. "I would but I doubt it would be good for my back." Gotsumon's voice came out of Carrie's mouth, quietly enough for Amelie to hear but not the knight. After long, the digimon would lead them down the hall to a regal chamber with many stone crosses on the walls, once elaborately decorated but now faded with age. In the center of the room is a coffin with several keyholes locking it shut. On top of the coffin is a key that had broken into three pieces.
"There's only two trials, because unfortunately, I cannot fight anymore." The knightmon said, solemnly. "Perhaps if there were a holy grail, but alas, Yggdrasil does not trust us with such a blessing. Here is the totem, and her soul tied to it, within her resting place. I cannot give you any clues for this one either."

Gotsumon seemed sad at having to devolve, but she knew this was for the best. Catherine came back soon enough and now they resolved the whole issue thanks to the magic of digivices. That had been a good call.
Amelie smiled back slightly at her. "No biggie, mate. Anytime." After a small hallway and a comment from Gotsumon she didn't quite understand, the second and hopefully final test was on them. Crosses on the walls, a locked coffin in the middle of the room and some key fragments lying on top of it. Well, there were three options, mostly. "Okay, this one looks interesting." The brunette said, eyeing the room, trying to see if there were any details she had missed the first time she had observed it.
Well, maybe they'd have to think this through or... "I think we either use the digivice and expect some kind of magic answer, try to solve the whole puzzle or just... smash the the coffin to smithereens. Considering how deteriorated everything is, I doubt we'd have any issue forcing the thing open, honestly. In the end, however." Given it was her spirit, it was fair to say... "It's your choice. What do you wanna do about this?"

Carrie took out the digivice and frowned as it didn't seem to beep or give them any hints other than confirming that knightmon was correct, the totem was still in the coffin. "Well..." Carrie said, looking it over. "I uh, I'd rather not insult mister Knightmon by trashing the things he'd worked on keeping safe for so long." She pointed out to Amelie. "So I guess we'll try the puzzle." She carefully swept the key pieces off of the coffin and looked them over. Several keys had been broken apart, leaving four handles and five... things you put into the keyhole. You know what I'm talking about, right? She double checked to make sure she had them all and that none had fallen to the floor long ago, then held them out in front of Amelie. "So..." She began, trying to think.
She began by seeing which keys felt like they fit together the best, but to no dice, they had all either been cut evenly or the age of the keys had made it impossible to decipher that way through feel or visual alone. She then began looking at color or material, which helped make one key and eliminate one handle, it appeared, but the rest were beyond her. "OK, well... do you have any glue?" She asked her friend. "I uh, don't carry any..." She said the last part very quietly. The day she got high in Art class and pushed a kid out of a window was not something she dared repeat again, even if it was only the ground floor.

The puzzle itself was... uninteresting to Amelie, and that was to say the least. Mismatching keys sounded like a pretty lame way of getting their prize, but if they had to do it, then... so be it. The brunette began to collaborate with some of her own opinions on which halves could be the more likely candidates to be a full key, even if that... kinda didn't matter in the end, she guessed?
"You know, now that I think of it; the shaft and the bow of a key aren't really necessary to operate them? I mean, we could pretty much mix anything and the result would be the same as long as the thing is solid enough to turn." There probably was a catch, but saying the obvious wasn't out of question; before they could draw conclusions from that fact, however... Carrie seemed to find a key that matched, and that's where they got their second problem.
How to join them? There didn't seem to be anything in the room that'd help them for that, and the only thing that came to Amy was... probably not among her greatest ideas. "When you said you wield the spirit of metal, maybe that means Gotsumon can do something to recompose this thing? You know her better than me; do you think she could?"
She really wasn't up to see Gotsumon again, but this seemed like their own way to repair those. At least she knew that her hands were way too big to operate the keys, so she'd have to open the coffin.

"I don't think Gotsumon even knows what metal is." Carrie mumbled. "And all she really does is uh... use rocks. I'm kinda glad she regenerates since I don't know what happens to me when she's just a head, but I don't think hitting these will do anything. Do you have any-" She said, suddenly thinking. "Magnets! Magnets are created by a combination of certain metals compounded to one-another and can be found in nature in the form of Magnetite. If Gotsumon knew what magnetite or magnets in general felt like, she could, theoretically, be able to summon it to her body and you could use it to keep the key together, assuming these keys are made of a magnetic material..." She said, looking at the pieces.
She dug into her backpack, looking for anything magnetic or magnet-esque, frowning, then thinking again. "Or we could make our own magnets... do you have anything made of metal you wouldn't mind losing?" She asked, digging into her backpack again. "All we'd need then is a battery and some kind of wire." She smiled as she pulled out a couple of paper clips.

"Fair point." Amelie replied, giving a small shrug. Truth to be told, Gotsumon wasn't... the sharpest stone in the stream. "Then, do you have any idea-"
At least the brunette hadn't been mistaken when she said Carrie was a genius. Even if there were some small doubts about the plausibility of her friend's idea, she had to admit it was the best they got. "Metal, huh..." Her hands dug into her pockets, as if trying to register something her mind wasn't. Digivice wouldn't work, D-Terminal wouldn't work either... keys? That wouldn't either; bronze isn't a magnetic metal.
Right! The bottle opener keychain her keys had. That should do the trick nicely. Pity it was a souvenir brought from Spain or something, but this was probably slightly more important than that. She made both items part ways, one hand stashing one while the other offered what was requested. "I don't think I have the batteries... or the wires. Any ideas on that stead?"
Obviously enough, neither of them were separating from their devices, and that made Amy quite curious on... what would Carrie have on her backpack to replace those components? If she had something that could even pass as them, she'd have to admit that the girl was full of surprises.
