As another generation of tech in the Human World begins to be phased out, an enormous amount of stray data has sloughed off from the void and into the Dark Area, changing it into a radically different place than it was before. A drastically different, much less barren landscape awaits. From what was once a dead place without much purpose, it is now inhabited by all the unwanted, a land where all are free to be as terrible as they wish if they so desire, an untamed wilderness with no rules other than the strong, clever or lucky surviving while the weak or less fortunate perish.
The Forsaken Wasteland, while it has more variety now, is only marginally more habitable, with the occasional tree visible alongside harsh, jagged cliffs, fissures in the earth leading to vast underground caverns or nearly endless pits, and some volcanoes, leaving an inhospitable, dangerous place to navigate full of potential hazards. It is more or less a coagulation of stray data from the rest of the Digital World, containing places too damaged to continue existing in the normal Digital World, the ruins of massive castles once owned by the Seven Great Demon Lords and left to decay, and vaguely familiar landmarks. This new Dark Area is essentially a shrunken, twisted mirror of the rest of the Digital World, a mockery where the evil, forgotten and despised live, be it by choice or otherwise. A few areas are even able to be considered pleasant, though they are guarded jealously by those who have already laid claims to them.
An enormous manor house and numerous smaller structures lie forgotten in a remote corner of the Dark Area, a multitude of buildings once beautiful and now run down and derelict. With peeling paint and weathered exteriors, they still provide infinitely better protection than the dark, perpetually dead world of gnarled, thorny trees and ponds of stagnant, filthy water surrounding them for miles alongside harsh, sheer cliffs, desolate caverns and the occasional lava flow. The large, elaborate door into the central building stands slightly ajar, a flicker of light ominously coming within. This forgotten village is the only civilization for miles, a strange, eerily empty place in most aspects, a haunted village of ghosts, ghouls, goblins and all manner of assorted ghastly types. And, of course, it is somewhat distrusting of many outsiders. Digimon in the Nightmare Soldiers and Dark Area fields seem to be received better, which makes sense giving those are the majority of its population, while holy Digimon are almost invariably met with revulsion. This is the new Fragment Village.
In the center of the village, a vast, deep pit stands with a circle of stones and a roughly hewn, wooden device to lower people into the abyss in sacrificial rituals, feeding outsiders and the unworthy to their god, which dwells underneath the town and offers them protection from the worst of the Dark Area in return. The villagers perform these sacrifices on a regular basis, and will go so far as to abduct Digimon from outside the Dark Area to feed them to their supposed protector. If someone finds the village suspicious, they are thrown in if they do not leave in due time, if they are trustworthy, it may take weeks or more for the inhabitants to finally do the deed. On occasion they may offer those arbitrarily deemed worthy to join the cult, but this is rare.
The massive manor house present in Remnant Village, known as the Darknet Academy, is a place for spellcaster Digimon to hone their skills, its current master unknown, but the abundance of Digimon affiliated with magical powers and sorcery is obvious, a large number of them conspiring in secret, with whisperings about a portal to another Digital World being the main goal in mind, among other, even less ethical experiments and projects. Though perhaps a bit corny, this place is full of secrets in itself, ranging from secret passages and chambers to bits of the Digital World's history best left forgotten. In fact, no one is sure of the extent of the things this place hides within its old walls and multitude of dusty tomes and secret rooms. One could say that it is the magically oriented counterpart to the Hardware Den, and that is a bit of an accurate assumption.
Underneath the Dark Area is a vast labyrinth of ancient stone, a warped and changed version of the Grotto Of Sorrow with numerous tombs and ruins providing a much more tempting location for daring and reckless explorers. The occasional body lines the passages, not even granted the mercy of deletion, for Remnant Village's mysterious god and its' offspring leave Digimon in an encrypted, frozen state instead, deciding to feed on them slowly, gradually, painfully, leaving most of them too weak to move or even recover from their terrible fate. As one might expect, there are incredible treasures lying within the maze, alongside numerous passages that lead out to other places of the Dark Area, though the vast majority of these are far away. The things that lurk within the elaborate, labyrinthine prison vary wildly from account to account, ranging from hideous, monstrous Digimon, lethal traps capable of decimating whoever is unfortunate enough to trigger them, to things that simply do not make sense.
Looking out into the Sea Of Blood, its' edges have become more varied. While the sheer cliffs and absolutely lethal, corrupted "water" are still present, things are considerably less lethal, though swimming for extended periods is still not advised, the tainted liquid code being painful to be in without proper protection and very much capable of injury if anyone stays in it for an extended amount of time. The dark orb floating in the sky like an ominous blot in the sky, kept from floating away by obsidian black chains is still there above the ocean, including the impossible, twisted castle of curses concealed within, remain unchanged. There is little reason to enter the crimson tides of the Sea Of Blood, but stronger Digimon are now resistant or perhaps even immune to its' effects, and can discover a horrific, warped undersea world of fleshy growths and hideous, malformed coral formed from the remains of those who decayed into nothing, their remains twitching. Some say one can hear their screams if one tries hard enough.
Of course, this change doesn't mean the Dark Area isn't any less dangerous. It merely means that it has become a more intriguing place to explore, one where caves and crypts are one and the same, familiar landmarks appear as twisted, deadly versions, and hazards lurk around every corner. You'd be a fool to come here expecting an easy time, but you can expect your travels through the Dark Area to be worthwhile.
