The Moon
Heroes have travelled far and beyond. They faced the draconic mights in the spears of megido. They’ve vanquished evil in the dark area. They’ve had an audience with Yggdrasil himself in the Empyrean Skies, travelled upon the vast back of the giant Eldoradimon. They’ve had time to relax in whitewater and see new digital life spring forth in the village of beginnings. And yet, every night, they can face the sky and still see that moon and those stars, so wonderful, yet so far out of their reach..
Until one day, a certain group of digimon crashlands upon the digital world, revealing a whole new side of that moon in the sky. They establish a small colony in the digital world itself, and offer to establish a trade center there, alongside with rides to the moon itself.
That’s right, today I will be presenting, the moon.
The digital moon is rather similar to the moon in the human world, at first glance. It appears as a barren wasteland of craters and dust, except this particular moon has vast extensions of ice covering it as well and unlike the Earth’s moon, this one is fixed, unable to spin. Yet, unknown to most up until this point, it actually has inhabitants. Not only are there multiple villages of digimon that wonder on it’s surface, but also because beneath said surface is a vast network of tunnels carefully kept inhabitable by those that have to survive on the moon. Why digimon ever began appearing on the moon is still unknown. Some claim that they may have originated in the moon. Others that they were kidnapped by some other digital form. Others even conceive that they were digimon banished by Yggdrasil, who has thus far refused to let any thoughts known about the newly opened doors.
The full layout of the digital moon and it’s inhabited areas is as follows:
Recycle Barrens
The moon’s surface is permeated mostly by empty barrens, a desolate wasteland of frozen dust, with the little variation there even is to it being the major craters. Gravity here is as you’d expect from the moon’s gravity , weak enough to feel extremely lightweight, but strong enough to still be attached to the planet in the end. The bigger problem is breathing in these conditions, so you will need to be provided some method of respiration, either by your own means or by those of whoever brought you to that place. Many digimon, however, can survive in these conditions, and it isn’t uncommon to find a wandering Icemon, coming from one of the villages to harvest the supply of waste that occasionally forms in the moon’s orbit.
There isn’t a lot to do on the moon’s surface, and because of the digimon that inhabit it seem to have a lessened need for eating or drinking, and lack any need for breathing, their culture is often centered around finding entertainment, being slightly different for each village. Most of them, however, share a passion for inventiveness, choosing to attempt to cure their boredom by always coming up with new stuff to make, create, think or do, regardless of whether those things are good, stupid or dangerous.
Spacewhamon Training Facility
A large area built into a particularly large crater on the moon’s surface, this location heavily resembles none other than a launching platform for a plane. It contains both a highly-advanced shed that allows a small number of inhabitants to remain there and keep operacional facilities, and a large dome which acts as a form of “stable” for the Spacewhamons, who enjoy floating freely through the dome until their services are required to transport someone to or from the moon. Only the elite among the elite from Warmbreeze City are allowed within the training facility or to ride the Spacewhamons, as they refuse to allow themselves to be riden by those unworthy, the only exception being those requesting passage using the whamons, who are briefly allowed to be there until their transport departs.
Back-Up Fields
With a large dome built around it for protection, this area is the only non-barren section of the moon’s surface. It is instead littered with colorful flowers and a lucky few may even see one of those rare eggs that forms here. None know whether this phenomenon is an imitation of the village of beginnings for the moon, or whether when the village of beginnings is in danger, data starts collecting into the back-up fields instead. Some in fact suspect that the back-up fields are the real reason why the moon is inhabited at all, having brought digimon data into the moon at times of danger, with those digimon being unable to make it back. It is, oddly, the only naturally breathable place on the moon’s surface, even without the dome.
Wifi Canal
A recently built trailmon station, with the trails still in construction. It has a luxuriously touristic appeal to it, like one of those hotels that goes completely overboard with their reception to appeal more to people that just walked in. You can find several shops already being established before the trails are even completed, selling all kinds of moon and digital world-related merchandize to whichever side the client comes from. One of the most popular is the “floating rails photography station”, a small shop focused on photography and in giving people an enjoyable, safe ride floating on the space near the end of the trailmon rails (or as far as they are legally allowed to reach). Often, this results in great photographic sessions, and you can bring home a souvenir framed picture of you and your digimon sharing a warm space hug.
Ether-N Tunnels
Beneath the moon’s surface is perhaps it’s greatest secret, a vast network of tunnels yet to be fully explored. Those that come to the moon may have a hard time encountering the hidden hatches like those of a ship, disguised with dust among the barren land. Some of them have begun to be exposed now that the moon is opening to strangers, but one will still have to be pretty lucky (or unlucky) to find one without any help from a native. Upon entering the hatch, and closing it, a newcomer will find themselves faced with three to four layers of carefully managed, almost polished vacuum doors, and gradually allowed entrance into each new layer until they enter the tunnels themselves.
The inhabited area of the tunnels repurposed the tunnels they found before. In this area, heavy and careful maintenance is kept, and as one walks along the pristine metallic floor, one can see reinforced pipes running all over the ceiling, with a multitude of fans and other types of ventilation fixed on the walls every few meters, like fancy paintings on the home of someone far too proud of their family. In reality, this is because air and heat are extremely valued within the moon’s underground society. In fact, the most valued and high-ranking (in terms of sheer social status) of it’s jobs is the simple repetitive injection of new air and heat with one’s attacks, over and over again to central containers in Warmbreeze City, which then spread out all across the inhabited tunnels and to some extent to the uninhabited part as well. It would not be a stretch to say that the tunnels and this generation of heat and air is the only thing assuring the survival of those inhabiting the moon who are unable to live under it’s surface’s rough conditions.
As one wonders down the tunnels, they are most likely to end up in Warmbreeze City, however, if one strays from the path enough (and ignores all the DANGER signs and the gradually more lackluster infrastructure), one may end up in an area of the tunnels built on rock, broken metal and loose wires. Strange devices or rocks with what appears to be runes become more common to be found as one goes even deeper, and eventually pods with dormant digimon in some kind of green liquid gel also begin appearing. The inhabitants of the moon have confirmed those digimon are, effectively, dead, and they fear the tunnels hence, as clearly some form of ancient civilization built the tunnels. Who they were, what happened to them and why, remains a mystery, a mystery even the bravest of souls may not want to solve.
Warmbreeze City
Also known as “the breathing city”, Warmbreeze is the Rome of the moon, the place where all roads (or in this case, all tunnels) seem to lead to. It is located very close to the moon’s center, being in fact directly connected to the Heart of Gold. This is a massive thriving futuristic city, built mostly on copper and golden metal, seeming to always shine with the large grotto that was gradually dug to accommodate it. While the city is lively, there is a serious and almost tense atmosphere to it. It’s inhabitants had to struggle to even survive for so long, they became far more professional. The people don’t seem particularly reserved or unfriendly, if you get hurt or want to learn about something, you likely will get help without a second thought, but you are unlikely to find anything resembling a party as wastes are truly throwned upon in this location.
The Heart of Gold
At the center of the moon, one can find the heart of gold, a massive semi-hollow spherical sea of pure golden nectar. It has a sweet flavor that makes one feel a soft sensation like a perfect dream, and feels invigorating to consume, going so far as to satiate hunger and thirst with a very small amount. Some digimon have come to believe this might have even been the mystic birthplace of Yggdrasil, and that the moon therefore was the digitama for the digital world’s ruler. While there is no way to confirm whether this was the case, such theories along with the obvious preciousness of the sea have made it a heavily guarded area of the moon, second only to the ventilation centrals.
Finally there is one more area that could be added if the moon is, but which does not belong in the moon itself.
T.D.L.C. (Technical Diplomacy and Launch Colony)
T.D.L.C Is a small time colony built around a crashed pod used to be attached to a rocket, built by one of the inhabitants of the moon’s surface. This colony serves as a basis of operation in the digital world, being located in the Northen Prominence for the being the place that most easily could resemble the moon’s own surface in terms of conditions. The colony is pretty much a series of tents built over a solid but thin metal mat. They aren’t very heavily fortified despite the attention they get and seem rather keen in fact in interacting with the digital world natives. The main feature of this colony aside from the crashed pod now practically blackened into ashes is the massive telescope at it’s center, with which they observe the moon, specifically the Wifi Canal, as there is one more purpose to this colony: To be the location in which the station for the other end of the canal will be built.
