(I fully acknowledge this isn't a great general purpose location, but its 30 minutes to midnight and it could make for a fun prison break plot, so wooooo let's try something unique and spur of the moment!)
One of the hardest questions to ask when dealing with hostile Digimon is how to imprison one. For the most part, Digital law enforcement boils down to beating the data out of another until it either gives up or breaks down into an egg. For most Digimon? That's enough. Death is little more than a time out, followed by them hatching out of an egg and getting a second chance. However, what happens if a Digimon comes back with the urge to do nefarious deeds still intact? What if their data is corrupted, and will follow them through countless lifetimes? What if the good people of Luminas simply don't think they've apologized enough yet?
This was why the greatest engineers in the Digital World were commissioned to work on the Isolation Zone. It is a rather small small prison located on the underside of Luminas, keeping those imprisoned within the Zone out of sight from the rays of the sun. It resembles a golden sphere, attached to the island via several support bearings and guarded by large watchtowers filled with Luminas' finest marksmen. The inside of the sphere is simple: five chambers arranged in the shape of a star, all connected to a single central entryway. Shelves upon shelves of Digicores are stored in each chamber, each hooked up to a simulated reality in the chamber's central terminal. This simulated reality tricks the Digicore in question into believing that it has already reformatted, preventing it from taking on a new body in the Digital World proper. In essence, it is almost a server built within the Digital World's server.
Each of these five chambers has a unique reason behind being built, whether for punishment or for mercy.
PURGATORIO - Purgatorio was the first of the Isolation Zone's prisons to be built, and was designed as a holding space for those whose fates are in question. It is little more than a cosmic waiting room, a featureless white void where almost nothing of note happens. Prisoners can explore freely (a small mercy, considering the sheer emptiness that Purgatorio is composed of) and speak among one another, but beyond this are incapable of doing much of anything. An individual in Purgatorio can be isolated and spoken to by Luminas officials, often for the purposes of securing a confession or questioning a criminal Digimon about the whereabouts of others. Compliance with Luminas' requests will usually grant a Digimon their freedom. Ignoring them will lead to the Digimon in question being returned to the void, or worse.
INFERNO - For the unrepentant or the malicious, the second of the Isolation Zone's prisons was created. Whereas Purgatorio is (theoretically) a neutral entity, Inferno was designed for the express purpose of punishing the wicked. It resembles a Digital World plunged into darkness, subtly wrong in a countless number of ways. Food had no taste. The air is always somewhat too hot, or somewhat too cold. The skies are overcast, revealing only darkness on the rare occasions where the clouds part. Cities shun them, and pass judgment on those who enter anyway. Those within Inferno seem plagued with bad luck. And, worst of all, any who lash out at their surroundings find themselves pierced with rays of holy light. It is a maddening isolation inside a parody of the world its occupants once knew. Those who have their hedonistic, violent urges worn out of them are allowed a chance at redemption, reforming in the real world. Those who do not are left to languish until they finally give up the ghost.
PARADISIO - In contrast to the other two servers, Paradisio is an act of mercy on behalf of Luminas. It is the dwelling for all of those with data corruption, or those with fatal injury who aren't ready to let go of their current forms. Paradisio is an exact copy of the Digital World, except with all of its negative elements scrubbed away. There is no hunger, thirst, fatigue, or pain, allowing these long-suffering Digimon to enjoy the life that they had almost lost to the fullest. Unfortunately, space in Paradisio is limited, and there is great strain put upon the server in order to keep these harmful elements at bay. For this reason, stints in Paradisio are fundamentally temporary. Luminas' healers are tasked with mending wounds and curing corruption as much as they can on the cores while they are in stasis, but if they are unable to find a cure residents of Paradisio are let go once they've come to peace with themselves.
VALHALLA - Valhalla is the first addition to the triumverate of prisons that once made up the Isolation Zone, and interestingly enough is not a prison at all. Instead, it is a holding center for Luminas' best and brightest. The cores in Valhalla are allowed more autonomy than those in other parts of the Isolation Zone, capable of displaying themselves on screens lining the central terminal and interacting with the rest of Luminas. The Digimon here are noble heroes and sages of Luminas' past, kept in suspended animation so their knowledge and talent can be passed on throughout the ages. They serve as mentors, guides, and even a council for lawmaking in times of crisis. When not being asked for their wisdom, they have their instincts honed through constant simulated battles in case they are ever needed to be reawakened. Most of Luminas agrees that Valhalla is a great idea, perhaps in part due to hoping to be interred there some day. However, a few think of it as a rare excess on the part of the Luminas elite, set up so they never need to revert to the egg and relinquish power.
TARTAROS - The last, and most controversial, entry into the Isolation Zone. Whereas the punishments of Inferno are meant to purge all malice from a Digimon before letting them back into society, Tartaros seems to exist for the sole purpose of vengeance. Tartaros is not one server but many small ones, keeping the Digimon within in a state of solitary confinement. Each server scans the Digicore occupying it thoroughly before interment, rewiring itself to play on a Digimon's greatest fears, regrets, and hatreds. This causes the server to warp into a torment of the interred Digimon's own creation. Any Digimon put inside Tartaros is fully expected to never get out. The government of Luminas decrees that only the worst, most irredeemable, and most dangerous Digimon are to be kept within Tartaros, but nonetheless the idea does not sit well with large portions of the populace. Many of its more merciful citizens believe that eternity is far too long for such punishments to persist, and that the darkness of Inferno is more than enough. Others believe any sent to Tartaros had it coming anyway, and have little sympathy for those imprisoned. Due to this controversy, few, if any, Digimon are currently stored in Tartaros' servers. Those who are should not be reawakened, no matter what the cause.
