Character Name: Kelsey Baxter
Alias: ‘Killer’ Kelsey
Age: 17
Height: 5’9"
Weight: 124 lb
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Birth Date: December 27th
Birth Place: Cornwall, UK
Western Horoscope: Capricorn
Eastern Horoscope: Snake
Personality:
The first impression given by Kelsey is that she’s just another one of those ‘outsider types’, perhaps due to the way she detachedly ignores the crowds, tending away from socialisation. What later becomes apparent is that she’s earned the nickname ‘Killer’ for a reason. For her, being alone does not translate to being an easy target. Although it’s resulted in her still being occasionally ostracised, by no means is she the weakest link.
A keen wit, sharp tongue and sometimes ruthless displays of force are what keeps Kelsey at the top of her game. It’s almost turned her into a bully, when sometimes defensiveness turns into aggression or a joke said in good nature cuts too deep.
Her tendencies hasn’t kept her completely friendless, however. With a warrior-like, go-getter attitude and an active sense of humour, some might appreciate her attitude. For others, she might just rub them the wrong way, but a friendship with her is a solid, tangible thing. She might not always show it, but she appreciates her friends, readily able to come to their aid when it matters.
It’s not that she’s dishonest, in fact, you might find that she’s the complete opposite – trusting even the most disharmonious of opinions to complete strangers. The only thing is that she can be purposefully elusive when it comes to important knowledge. Information is to be earned or paid for and not volunteered. This is partly due to a complete lack of trust in anyone she doesn’t know. It’s also due to the smug feeling she gets that she might know something that everyone else doesn’t.
Never mind that maybe people have a right to know. Morals or duty aren’t really things Kelsey concerns herself with. She’s fiercely individualistic, self-reliant and not afraid to see what it takes to get from A to B, whether someone might get hurt in the process or not. It’s a viewpoint that she tends to blanket everyone else with: if something goes wrong for you, it’s probably your fault.
This outlook has bred a sort of cavalier attitude towards the misfortunate. If asked for her opinion, Kelsey might come off as cold or even cruel. Very rarely might her sympathy be earned without time or effort. To her, everyone is an idiot until proven otherwise - in good humour, of course.
Indeed, Kelsey actually has a surprisingly deep appreciation for humour. She’s always seeking the opportunity for a good joke, sometimes to the point of mischief. She’s also quite willing to parlay with anyone who’s able to match her, even if at her own expense.
Such a generalist attitude may have been due to the amount of time that she spends outdoors away from others, observing the weather and wildlife. A keen interest in the natural world has resulted in good observational skills in terms of the environment around her. It’s safe to say that she’d score high in a spatial awareness test.
Another facet of Kelsey’s personality is that she has a rather laser-like ability to focus, provided the situation becomes important enough. With it, an uncanny sense of inquisitiveness can overcome her.
In a way, she would make an excellent tactician. She sees things for what they are, whether in terms of people or environments. Likewise, what you see with her is what you get.
Personal History:
Born and raised around the coasts of the UK to two loving parents, Kelsey soon developed a great respect for the power of nature. The rugged cliff-lines and powerful surf demanded nothing less. To say the least, she spent most of her childhood exploring all the nooks and crannies of the cliffs and rock-pools. When storms inevitably rolled through the country, she’d watch with awe at the sheer power of the waves.
Ironically, her father worked at manning a weather-station, so she was always in the know with terms such as pressure and wind-speed. It gave her even more reason to be outdoors too, well away from indoor activities. With parents that loved the outdoors, she did too.
Eventually however, a little brother soon arrived. As expected, she was pushed to the wayside. Her parents had more work than ever and she had school to do.
Unfortunately, school wasn’t treating her well either. With few friends, she was inevitably bullied. This carried on for years until one day, she snapped. She’d reached back and decked a bully in the face. She was duly reprimanded and eventually returned to school. The bully didn’t bother her again.
That day however, she’d learned something: that fighting back got you somewhere. So that wasn’t the last time that kids got decked. Soon enough, almost the entire class knew not to mess with her.
In her teenage years, she became braver. A snarky comment here or there and sometimes the class would even laugh with her, as she became a sort of class clown. It was also an ever growing outlet for her frustration towards her family. A frustration that sometimes turned into aggression lest someone even look at her the wrong way.
Picking fights at that age was getting more and more difficult however. When Kelsey realised this, she took up training. Running and some compound exercises got her into good shape. At least enough to beat up the boys, provided she wasn’t ridiculously outgunned.
Her rowdiness inevitably got the attention of the administration and consequently her parents. Unsurprisingly, they worried for her and her future. Her grades were never great and day by day, she seemed to become more and more of a delinquent, despite the fact that she never mixed with the wrong crowd – let alone any crowd at all.
Her father was offered a job overseas and the family saw this as a great opportunity for a fresh start. Kelsey would be able to work as her father’s assistant at the new weather station he was to be posted to. She’d begged them not to go. Not only had she felt like she’d found her place amongst her peers - albeit as a scary tomboy - she’d finally earned herself some friends.
Kelsey even took it upon herself to calm down somewhat, resorting to humour instead of fighting, in the hope that her parents would change their minds.
It was all futile, and she soon found herself boarding the plane to Tokyo. She’d cried that day. Even today, she’s affected by it. She’s not close to her parents or brother, instead opting to be with friends or simply alone in the wilderness.
Skills/Talents:
- Spatial and tactical awareness from time spent outdoors. She’s better able at judging and memorising the environment, weather, time and her own capabilities, as well as other’s.
- In good shape. She has good stamina lending to long hikes, extended running or even fighting. Leading into…
- Decent fighter. Although not professionally trained by any means, she’s taught herself a good deal of dirty tricks and knows the best places to hit or disarm an opponent. It’s a type of knowledge gained only by experience.
- Wildlife knowledge. She’s knowledgeable on identifying animal and sometimes plant life, although not so much Japanese wildlife.
Appearance:
Wardrobe-wise, Kelsey is not a colourful person. What she’s wearing is what’s required to cover her body. Pastel, washed out designs are her preference, if not just neutral greys, blacks and whites.
Likewise, her hair – which in itself is black - has been cut rather unprofessionally to shoulder-length. All the better for her to wake up and go with as little as a hairbrush. Kelsey also has a preference for either sneakers or hiking-style boots, depending on whether she’s in the rural countryside or a more urban environment.
To say the least she’s not keen on make-up. The only accessory she wears is a whetstone pendant, hung by a cheap piece of string. To someone without any knowledge of what it is, it appears to be just a normal stone carving.
In terms of build, Kelsey is not particularly imposing, although it’s clear to see that there’s muscle under her skin. She’s far from what you’d call toned, perhaps due to her appreciation for good food, but it’s still enough to be noticeable.
Her face is not particularly remarkable, its features being more rounded than rugged, making it easy to see that Kelsey is indeed a girl, or more accurately, a young woman. By no means is she not shapely, befitting a developed body that has no doubt come to its biological maturity, with just a few more years of touch-up growth left.
However, what’s most noticeable about her is the expression she wears on her face, if not the lack of one. When her face is as stormy as her emotions, it seems only exemplified by the cold-grey of her eyes. Yet when she fails to yield her inner feelings, they betray nothing.
Backpack Contents:
- Antique swiss army knife, oxidised and faded in colour but has evidently been re-sharpened many times
- Transparent plastic compass
- A few pound coins
- Raw meat, fish, seeds and nuts for feeding wild animals
- Smart phone, wallet, and keys
- A whetstone tied to a piece of string, meant to be worn as a necklace
Digivice:
A D-Tector with a white base, black grips and teal buttons. The standard issue panelling has had holes drilled into it and a stainless-steel chain threaded through it, making it attachable to the body.
Level: Sprite
Species: Komatamon
Attribute: Free
Families: Nature Spirits, Wind Guardians
Type: Exalted Beast
Fighting Style: Evasive Stealth
Appearance:
Komatamon is a quadrupedal feline digimon. Apart from the small, almost vestigial wings on its back and its twin tails, it’s proportioned and sized very similarly to a house-cat. So much so that all Komatamon has to do to blend in with the real world is curl its tails together and flatten its wings.
Its eyes are steely blue and slitted, capable of night vision and picking up small movements while its black and white fur is silky soft, fluffy but not necessarily long-haired. Along its spine, black and white stripes zigzag down its haunches, faintly suggestive of its oddly digital nature.
Between the shoulders are two feathery white wings. Although small when folded, they can unfurl to allow for some decent gliding and flying, albeit with none of the excellent manoeuvrability that a bird would have. Moving along its spine, it eventually splits into two at the base of the tail, resulting in two appendages in place of one.
Around its neck is a silver choker, where thin slivers of chain hang from it.
Abilities:
- Ether’s Phase: Komatamon becomes ethereal, phasing out of the physical world into a shimmering ghost-like form. Physical objects pass through her and she becomes invisible unless the light hits her just right, in which case you may see a faint outline. There may be other forces at work here, as she’s sure she can see things she otherwise wouldn’t in this form. The effect must end if she wishes to interact with the real world again in any way. [2 turn maximum duration] [2 turn cool-down]
- Sublime Phase: Granted that Komatamon has a good idea of where she wants to go, she can pop out of existence and re-appear a short distance away. In times of desperation, she may be able to even swap places with another being, although doing so is far more taxing. [2 turn cool-down]
- Natural Pursuit: Komatamon launches herself at or chases her opponent, slashing and biting it as she goes. Her claws become imbued with glowing energy for the duration of this attack, lending her the extra power to pierce through tough hide.
- Foolish Fire: Komatamon’s tail tips alight with ghostly blue fire, allowing her to summon more flaming wisps around her, which she has complete control over. She can make them hover wherever she wishes, sometimes far further away from herself than you’d expect. Or she may fling them at opponents. Those hit by the flames may feel a great sense of dread and disgust wash over them as well as the pain of a nasty burn.
