Terminus City held a darker, colder atmosphere when you were at rock bottom. The gleaming, futuristic architecture seemed so imposing now, even without their dizzying heights. Standing near the base of one such building Pandora had to shield her eyes from the sunlight reflecting off of the skyscraper's surface. It looked so pristine and divine. Almost too perfect for her to risk tarnishing it with her touch. As if her thoughts manifested into reality a broom batted into her from the side and shoved her away from the building.
The tinkermon let out a cry of surprise as she was sent rolling onto the sidewalk. When she managed to at least rise up on her hands and knees with a growl a gruff, male voice spoke up.
"What are you doing here, Firefly?" asked the warumonzaemon as he continued to sweep the front of the building. He didn't bother looking at the fairy he had brushed aside as he continued his chore.
"Tch! Patches?!" gasped out the tinkermon as she glared at the possessed bear. As she stood up her voice took a firmer tone as her fists clenched at her sides. "What's gotten into you? You owe me, remember?!"
"Hmmm?" hummed the warumonzaemon as it slowly turned to face Pandora.
"The Forsaken Wasteland?! I saved you!" accused Pandora with a pointing finger.
"I suppose that's true," mumbled Patches as he scratched at his chin thoughtfully with his clawed glove. If the tinkermon's words were supposed to have a profound effect on the bear he wasn't showing it outwardly at least. "...but, you didn't really, did you?"
"Please do elaborate," hissed the tinkermon as she floated up in the air to reach Patches' eye level. Her barbed spear materialized at her side, and she was quick to grab it as her eyes narrowed. "because I remember having to sew you back together after you crawled into my camp. I know who you are without that suit! What you are!"
"Yep," agreed the bear flatly as the stitches in its stomach ripped open to reveal a pale green eye staring out at Pandora. "You've been holding that over me ever since then, threatening to tell others what you saw. You always thought you were so clever, but who's going to believe you at this point?"
The question put Pandora on the defensive, knowing it to be undisputed fact. She had burned a lot of bridges recently. Whole city blocks, if anything. People had caught onto her scheming ways. Now she couldn't find anywhere to stay within Terminus City anymore. Somehow, the metropolis felt more lonely than the Dark Area.
The warumonzaemon chuckled to himself. He pointed his clawed glove at Pandora.
"Even I found my place here in Terminus City. You, though? You're no one anymore. Best move on already."
"To where?" blurted out the tinkermon incredulously.
"Not my problem anymore, I'm afraid. You don't command me anymore. Whatever you choose to do though, might wanna be quick about it? It's going to get dark soon." Lifting his broom up Patches leaned it back against his shoulder before slowly shuffling away and into the tall building next to them.
Pandora frowned at the other digimon's exit, unable to retort. Maybe she should just leave. She had survived worst, she was sure. 'What did Patches mean by it getting dark, though? It's the afternoo-' The thought froze in her mind as she looked up at the sky. Darkness was slowly descending, but the sun was still out.
"What?" muttered the tinkermon as she squinted up at the circle of black nothingness getting bigger in the sky. The atmosphere and clouds fractured into raw data as the darkness kept spreading. "The sky, it's.. it's disintegrating! What?!"
Her jaw dropped at the realization and her eyes widened. She tried to call out to Patches about the discovery, but when she looked back down the warumonzaemon was already long gone. Pandora looked up again, this time to involuntarily release a panicked gasp. The growing darkness was stretching downwards, and now the top of the building she had been admiring was starting to wither away as well.
Darting towards the double door entrance Pandora tried to push it open, only to find it stuck. Through the glass doors though she could see people inside going about life as if nothing was amiss. 'Of course they wouldn't know, they haven't seen it yet,' rationalized the fairy.
"Hey!" shouted out Pandora as she pounded a fist on the door, "get out! The sky! The sky is disintegrating, and it's coming this way!"
She got no response, even though the people inside should have been able to hear her. She even saw Patches sweeping the floor. Again she beat on the glass door, shouting at the stuffed bear. Then, everything stopped inside as all visible digimon and humans turned to stare at Pandora. The collective and coordinated glance caused Pandora to push herself away from the door as goosebumps made her shiver. There was a feeling of wrongness about what she had just seen.
The silent staring contest continued for no more than a few seconds before Pandora decided to just run for it. Even with her back turned she knew that everyone else had gone back to what they were doing. A giant weight of anxiety had been lifted off of her after eye contact had been broken, but there was still the problem above to deal with.
She didn't get very far. As she flew out over a busy street a siren wailed. Louder still was the roaring clap of thunder as a cannon fired, obliterating the ground in front of the fairy and sending chunks of asphalt everywhere. Pandora had to shield herself with her arms as she recoiled away from the destruction. The tinkermon would have put her arms down, but she kept them up to block out the blinding red lights shining down on her from above.
"Flying through a street while vehicles are operating in it is a misdemeanor. You would already know that though, wouldn't you Pandora?" asked the artificial, monotone voice of the gundramon as it stepped closer. The metal digimon easily towered over the tinkermon, the difference in their size making the fairy look like a mere insect. "What's the rush?" asked the gundramon in an almost sarcastic tone.
Even with the red aiming lights from the gundramon's barrels pointed down at her Pandora could see the darkness above them still descending and silently destroying whatever it touched. For a moment, she considered running. The sound of the gundramon's weapons arming themselves again made her flinch and forget about that idea.
"Officer," spoke the fairy in a frustrated tone, "Have you looked up at the sky today?"
"What about it?" questioned the metal digimon as it turned off its aiming lasers and regarded Pandora with a tilt of its head.
"See for yourself! The sky is disintegrating, and it's deleting whatever it touches!" She pointed up to the sky with an impatient scowl. "Look!"
"Disintegrating," repeated the gundramon with a smirk. "Right. I'd expect that from some people, but you can do better than that."
Pandora pointed again, upset at the reaction she was getting. It took a few seconds, but eventually the gundramon did turn its head up. The tinkermon watched as the darkness began to touch and disintegrate the gundramon, who seemed oblivious to it all even as its head disappeared. One of its guns pointed at Pandora and waved her along, dismissing her as the steel giant turned and walked away.
The darkness continued to breakdown everything it touched. Pandora couldn't see the sky anymore. A black blanket stretched across the horizon from one end to the other as it descended down to the second floor of the buildings around her. In a panic, Pandora did the only thing she could do. She ran. Flying low to the ground and weaving between obstacles she desperately raced to find the edge of this terrible calamity to escape its grasp.
There was no end in sight, though.
As she felt herself fragmenting into bits of data the tinkermon screamed as the darkness claimed her.
She awoke with a start, nearly falling out of her seat. It took her a moment to realize where she was, aboard a trailmon inside Terminus City. And in fact, she had fallen out of her seat. Looking up to the person who had caught her, Pandora sighed in relief.
"P-Patches? It's you."
"Yeah, it's me," confirmed the warumonzaemon as he lifted Pandora up back to her seat. The green eye that stared out at the fairy from the bear's torn stomach studied her carefully. "Looked like you were having a bad dream?"
Pandora smirked at the question, but didn't meet Patches' stare. She didn't leave his hands, either. Her own hands lightly clutched at the soft, stuffed material holding her up.
"Maybe," she breathed out as she closed her eyes and shook her head to clear her thoughts. After a few moments of inner clarity she finally looked back to the large green eye. "Thanks for looking out. I.. I mean it, Patches."
Patches didn't answer initially. The large eye carefully looked over the tinkermon, surprised by the sincerity in her voice. Unsure of what to do the warumonzaemon sat back in his own seat, letting Pandora stay in his hands.
"Don't mention it, Firefly."Word Count:
