The attack had hit Elsie directly. And it seemed to be quite effective, to boot.
Maybe that had been too much, considering the girl in front of her was a novice? It was hard to say whether the digimon was being lenient or not, yet... did it really matter? In all honesty, if the amount of leniency that Stridermon was showing wasn't enough, chances were that its ally should just throw the dice again and look for a more suitable host. Not everyone would wear kiddie gloves around her, after all.
In fact, somebody probably knew by now that their lives weren't really in peril. Or, did she? The truth was that, even if this was a real fight, the aberration wouldn't have aimed to kill either of its lovely mice. What it sought to harvest from them was way more valuable than any amount of data. Would any of them realize what was truly at stake?
Time to find out.
A good deal of the earthen daggers sent in Stridermon's direction hit its flabby body dead on; the injuries sustained were obvious, even though they were already slowly beginning to reknit themselves. However, by sheer force of will —or inability to feel pain altogether—, the monstrosity's march was uninterrupted. Its goal? To close the distance between itself and the Matadormon that wasn't that far away.
That would be when the true fun would begin.
Things wouldn't be so easy, though. There was a nuisance that had to be dealt with for everything to go smoothly. With a simple gesture, a number of small, yet sharp of rocks would begin to float around Stridermon. The lot of them focus on the Witchmon's direction for a second, then... flew straight towards her.
Earthlin Shards. That would be a dead giveaway of the aberration's motives. Evie was a smart cookie, yet the question still lingered in the air. Would she be able to correctly hypothesize about what her opponent was truly after?
Would she... be able to guess what her sister would experience if she didn't move out of the way in time?

Effective? Definitely. Digivolution proved nearly impossible for a newbie to properly evolve and block! Elsie wasn't even entirely sure if there was a way to manage such a thing! Did that matter now though?
As far as what was at stake? Neither twin could truly be sure. Definitely Elsie's ego. Was there any true danger? Probably just Elsie's ego, to be entirely honest. Evie couldn't tell at this point in time. In fact, she might not be able to tell for months to come! Sometimes, it took a while to fully understand early encounters with foreign creatures. Plenty of observing and--
Having her own attack recreated and thrown back to her.
What?
The witch bit down on her lower lip. What kind of joke was this? Were those real? While the urge had been to use a shield to block off the attack, instead the spirit user jerked around on her broom to dodge most of the incoming projectiles. Either from a theory or from being too slow, the witch still felt a few of the objects slice her skin. Witches needed some sturdier clothes, that was for sure.
It had disproved a theory, however. They weren't illusions. Unless the pain was fake, too!
"Are you going to spend all day there?" The witch snipped, trying to keep herself from whining about her attack essentially turning on her. At this point, she was hesitant to launch any further moves in the direction of the monster that tormented them. What if it just kept recreating what she threw?
And, in a brittle response, pink sleeved arms lifted up, as if pointing at the creature that was drawing near. "Thousand Arrows," the Matadormon warned, as blades ripped out from the sleeves, flinging themselves toward the monster. A ranged attack, for someone so close? That almost felt like overkill.
It also seemed like a bad idea, considering what Evie had already established from the creature. But, she couldn't just stand by and watch, either. As repetitive as it was, more Earthlin Shards lifted, and launched toward Stridermon.
If her attack had been stolen once, she was not going to give the predator any more of her abilities if she could avoid it. Even though she wasn't entirely certain on how the copycat's abilities worked, anyway.

Just a few meters more. Stridermon's quarry was pretty much within its grasp, that pretty much being the reason's why its body had preemptively taken a metallic sheen. The aberration was more than aware that this wouldn't end quite like this, and that a counterattack was pretty much an assured outcome.
What hadn't been predicted, however, would be that both Elsie and Evie would have some fight remaining in them. Stridermon's body weathered both rocks and rapiers coming its way the best it could, but the damage dealt was more obvious than ever. Would the sisters be able to discern that the beast was almost on its last legs? If they paid attention, it wouldn't be hard to, honestly.
That wasn't something that mattered right now, though. Deciding to stop paying attention to the Witchmon altogether, and now that the monstrosity was face to face with the Matadormon... it was time to test that mind's fortitude.
A single, multi-tendriled limb shot itself directly at Elsie's head, trying to envelop it completely. Since Stridermon didn't have a lot of time, not more than a superficial influence would be exerted, but that was good enough as a first test.
Depending on how much the girl managed to resist, her mind would begin projecting barely recognizable imagery. The cryptic pictures would be accompanied by a sensation of defenselessness and unrest that could be fought but could also become almost overwhelming if you weren't prepared for it.
Inside Elsie's psyche, different messages would be drawn with bright pink letters, all while the same voice that 'conversed' with Evie repeated said words. This time, however, it was way more forceful and commanding; right now, it wasn't trying to have a conversation.
I'm not your enemy. I'm an ally.
Images three beings that Elsie hadn't ever seen, but that she knew were her sister, the thing they were fighting and herself could be seen. Two humanoid digimon and one gigantic abomination, fighting side by side to further their goals as comrades-in-arms.
Cast away your doubts. You won't survive if you don't.
That apex of power was cut short by a plethora of depictions of what on the surface seemed simple mistakes, but had compounded into either of the sisters meeting an untimely end. The reason for all of them? Elsie acting a second too late, or hesitating when she shouldn't have.
Be thankful for the power you've been granted. Hone it. Develop it.
Multiple totems were shown, all scattered through the entirety Digital World. They were hers, just like she was theirs. It was her mission to reunite with them and become whole once again.
Your sister will leave you behind if you don't.
Various scenes with Evie deciding to take her separate path followed. She is a fast learner, and she probably doesn't need this kind of help to thrive. Do you think she wouldn't abandon you if you became too much of a dead weight? Not even an identical twin sister has limitless patience.
I'll be watchful of your progress. Do your best to impress me.
A shadow loomed behind every action the blonde did or would do, but that was fine. The shadow's presence provided warmth and comfort. Just like the shadow was there for Elsie, Elsie had to be there for the shadow. It was her new duty.
I'll see you again soon.
As it approached, the shade began to slowly take form. It was still blurry, but at least Elsie could discern that it was a somewhat tall human being and that the two were closer than what she thought.
Before the form could be made clearer, however, the Matadormon was forcefully jerked back to reality. How well or badly she took the sudden barrage of imagery, symbols, words, and forceful suggestions depended solely on her mental fortitude, but at least one thing was for certain; she probably felt her head throbbing with a headache. And that was to say the least.
What about Stridermon? After the instant the attack lasted, the aberration just... vanished, exactly in the same way it had appeared; the sisters were now on their own. Did that mean they were safe now?
Well, not quite. They still had to deal with the room burning around them before that could be said, but at least the 'risk' to their lives wasn't as immediate as before. [Exit Thread]

The monster took the hits! But it still kept going! Witchmon's lips pressed tight, trying to think of what she could do to stop the creature. But, what was there to do? With the monster engulfing part of her sibling, the champion-level let out an exasperated huff. She had to do something! But, what was there to do?
More rocks began to lift around her. There were only so many times she could do this. Only so many times it could work, right?
Meanwhile, the projections would happen relatively instantly for the confused Matadormon. Today had already wracked enough havoc on her mental state enough that it took little effort to weasel through. Evie would have been a much more difficult prey in comparison to her sibling.
An ally?
Hardly.
Despite the images showing something that should have made sense, Elsie attempted to ignore it. Something that attacked them couldn't be an ally. It had to be fake, right? Just like the untimely endings that the next scenarios played out. Fake. Everything was fake!
Though, something definitely yearned for the totems that were spread across the map. For a second, perhaps, her mindset had calmed. The second was quick to fade, as heartbeat rapidly increased at the thought of her sibling abandoning her.
That had to be fake, too. Evie would never leave Elsie. They were sisters. Inseparable! And, Elsie needed her. Didn't that mean that Evie needed Elsie, too?
But, before she could even begin to process the next visage, she found herself lurching back into the present. Into the burning room. Into the sight of more Earthlin Shards flinging toward a target that vanished far too quickly to likely even care that they had been there.
It was gone.
But nothing was silent.
Screaming was filling the room, covering the sound of wood crackling and valuables burning. Metallic echoed through the Human-Spirit's visor, rapier-esque fingers trying to cover its face. She wanted to cry and she wanted to throw up, kneeling on the ground, and unable to process what had been happening.
If only she were in her human form right now. If she were--
"Stop," a voice cut through the wailing. Hardly louder than her average speaking voice, but sharp enough to slice through the scream. And then? The screaming stopped. The flamed remained the only thing moving, as Matadormon continued to try to grip its faceplate. She was frozen. It felt like time was frozen. "Acting like that is not going to help us." Silence. The strange entity was right. Elsie was going to be left behind at this rate. "Get up."
A demand that was quickly followed.
Black cat swirled from the Witchmon's broom to help steady its bladed companion, while Evie moved to her sister. Red, gloved fingers reached out, pulling her sibling onto the floating broom alongside her. "You're going to be fine. Do you understand?" To this, a slow nod. "Good." Under the weight of two Digimon, the broom gave a protesting wobble, before lifting higher from the ground.
Soon, they would begin to rise above the flames, to exit in the same manner that they had entered. Once out of the lower level, it was only a matter of navigating and a few well-placed attacks to find and create a proper escape route.
"That thing could have killed you," Evie stated, flatly. Could have. Was it actually ever a real threat? Honestly, it was unlikely. But, Evie wanted to try to press into her sibling the severity of the situation. That said... "Do you want to talk about it?"
And, in a response that encompassed both things that her sibling said, the Matadormon leaned against her sister before uttering a single word.
"No."
