It was four in the afternoon, the time of Rise's scheduled shift at the local grocery store. It wasn't a bad job, some customers did get rude at time, but for the most part, it was sitting behind a register in a nice air-conditioned building. Of course, the pay was absolutely laughable. Minimum wage, no benefits, the whole deal.
The pinkette arrived on time, dressed modestly in standard work uniform and minimal make-up. It was the only time she didn't wear her horned headband, as such accessories were looked down upon in the work place. She didn't want to make friends here, and thus kept interactions with co-workers to a minimum. What a dull existence. With a deep breath, the teenager clocked in, soon after heading to her work station.
The first hour of the day was uninteresting and slow. It was a period of time where most kids were still in school, and most adults still hadn't gotten off work. Plus, it was a Tuesday, so it wasn't exactly a prime time to go grocery shopping. Rise found her mind wandering, remembering her adventures in the Digital World. After experiencing something that fantastic, working a job like this was incredibly lackluster. She rested her chin upon her palm, nearly falling asleep.
The next hour went by faster, more customers poured in and kept the girl busy. During times like this, she usually got involved in her work, to the point where she focused entirely on it and lost track of time. This time, however,, her thoughts continued to return back to the world of Digimon. She had been through a lot, and even potentially ended some lives. After those experiences, it was really hard to fit into normal life like she once did. Was this kind of life over? She had spent so much time bettering herself to prepare herself for the real world, and now, all that seemed wasted. She wasn't meant to be in this world, with these people, and this society.
The next few hours went by steadily. Lunch came, and the girl ate a small dish of fried rice. It wasn't anything special, as she didn't spend much time preparing a meal the night before like she usually did. A few coworkers came and made small talk, but didn't say anything interest. How miserable it was - they were trapped in mundane existences and didn't even realize it.
Her arm...it was still broken from her earlier encounters with that monsterous Wedingomon. Luckily, it would heal soon, as she recieved proper medical treatment and currently had it covered in a cast. It was at that point that she realized that she couldn't rely on her human body for everything anymore, and needed to confront her fear of conquering the ancient spirit that shared her soul. It was the only way to fight back, the only way to make a difference. This was the first encounter she had any memory of, so at last, she had a start of finding a way to control it. Rise dropped her chopsticks, getting up early from lunch, and heading back to work.
At the end of the shift, around ten at night, she walked back to her supervisor's office, immediately telling him her decision. She would quit this job, it was no longer a needed part of her future. No, instead, all of her time would be devoted to the Digital World. Her family would be the next to be notified, she thought of the excuses she could give them. Maybe it didn't need an explanation. What they didn't know couldn't hurt them.
It was a quiet walk home, very few people still out on the dark streets. The sound of cicadas was heavy in the air, then they too, went to sleep. The fireflies came out to play next, illuminating the pale girl's walk home. She stopped at a vending machine on a street corner, the light from it flickering on and off. It would soon come to the end of its life, but for now, it still worked. After inserting some yen and ordering a tropical soda, she continued on her walk. Even the taste of soda didn't excite her as much as it used to, but it was still pretty damn good. Pineapple, mango, and hints of coconut. It was always her favorite.
Rise stopped by a bridge to enjoy the rest of her drink, watching the clean water of the creek flow and glisten against the city lights. A few fish bravely swam through the water, making their way downstream to fulfill their purposes in the circle of life. It was wild to think she actually just quit her job, and was essentially going to throw everything about this world away. How could she just ignore what she had seen, though?
It would be worth it. Mastering this power would be infinitely more beneficial than wasting away hours for a minimal amount of money. She had a few thousand yen saved up, which wasn't a lot, but would definitely keep her alive for the next few months. The night after this, she would take a train back to that world, and wouldn't leave it again until she understood how spirit evolution worked, and how to master it. Rise took the final sip from her drink, and continued on her walk. She was only a few minutes away from home now.
Upon arriving at her parents estate, she found all the lights off. Everybody was sleeping, as usual, so she tried to be quiet. On that thought, why wait until tomorrow? Deciding at last to simply not tell her parents or say goodbye, Rise gathered her savings and a few of her belongings, and changed out of her work clothes after a quick shower. She would head to the train station tonight, and return to the Digital World in just a few hours. Grabbing the last thing, her horned headband, the rebellous teenager walked out the door, determined to start a new chapter of her life.
