Exploring the Elysium [Mae/Johann/Invite]

Gabumon thrashed and attempted to fend off the group by trying to attack with his Blue Blaster again, but when Owen saw the blue fire, he immediately pressed his muzzle to the ground - a forceful move that he wasn't proud of, but he had to do it to prevent harm to his allies.
"Just a bit longer, mate, we'll have this ring off you soon!" he said, trying to sound reassuring. In fact he had to withdraw his arm quickly as Mae and Dokamon closed in to add extra force in its removal. Would their combined efforts work?
Mae aimed to crush it, and Dokamon pummelled at it. Owen would have cried for him to be careful had he not been so precise, as the ring was on Gabumon's neck after all. But, it seemed, the ring was either weaker or older than others, and, with this combined effort, it soon cracked and broke, then fell to the floor and shattered to pieces.
Gabumon then gave a yelp and gasped for breath, in the manner of one awakening from a nightmare. Realizing he was likely docile now, Owen moved off his back, moving around to face him.
"Gabumon? You okay there?" he asked, as Gabumon's eyes stopped glowing. He seemed to be in a panic for a moment, and almost seemed likely to attack again. But, as his ruby eyes fixed on Owen's amber ones, a sense of familiarity returned to him.
"...Captain?" the Gabumon asked, his voice hoarse and weak. "...what's going on? Where are we? Who are these people?"
Owen's own eyes widened as he realized who exactly this Gabumon was. The pelted lizard coughed a little, then sat back upright, taking deep breaths to relax himself. Could this be...?
"...Sten?" Owen asked with disbelief. "Sergeant Sten...? Is that you?"
"Yes, sir, it's me" Gabumon answered, seeming to relax a little. "Sergeant Sten Gabumon, service number NX47780. Pardon me for not standing to salute, but, I don't seem to be able to just now".
Owen was momentarily stunned, that was the correct number and everything. It really was him. But in the heat of the battle, they couldn't just have quite a warm reunion yet.
"Sten, what was that just now? Why was there a dark ring on your neck?" Owen asked.
"I... don't remember, sir" Sten answered. "Last thing I remember from here, I was exploring in the Western Flatlands, and... now I'm here. I also remember nightmares, but... they're more vague. I wish I could tell you more".
Gosh, all this was quite the mystery. Either way, Owen thought that they had likely had enough down here for now. One active dark ring was enough for him to think they had better clear out.
"I think we should head back to the surface now" Owen said to the others. "Best only come back once we've got a fully prepared team... unless you guys have a reason to stick around a little longer".
Bezil seemed indecisive on this. They hadn't yet come across research notes of value, and he thought if they could at least find those then that might be of value to the next expedition. Still though, with dark rings now in the equation, he understood why they should probably get out of here. Only humans could 100% deal with those properly and Johan was the only one there among them.

You know, Mae probably should not have been able to crush metal like that but at the same time? It gave her a feeling that was infrequent, if not nonexistent. She felt kind of strong doing that! Once something gave, the Keramon bounded back from the Gabumon. Wow, what a long, long 'mon.
It appeared that Owen was familiar with this Gabumon. A Se...Sergeant Sten. That was a hard word. "...Nightmares are bad, don't have them. Hi, I'm Mae."
Of course, nobody could really have any memory of why they had something that robs someone of themselves on their neck...Mysteries for another time. They seemed to be getting ready to head back to the surface now. "...I agree. There's only...more stuff to be found here. And I don't know if it's good or bad but given this is Dark Tower related? Mayyyybe just bad."

Success! With all their combined efforts, the Gabumon's Dark Ring crumbled and fell to the floor. Once he was back to consciousness, Dokamon moved back from the Gabumon a bit, as he was no longer a threat now. Before long, the Gabumon began to speak...
...it called Owen "Captain."
This Gabumon must've been part of Owen's 7/71st group back in the DWR days... Johan thought to himself. The Gabumon revealed himself to be just that: Sergeant Sten of the 7/71st Recon. He claimed to be in the Western Flatlands before suddenly being here...
"So either a Dark Ring got you while you were there, or you were unconscious and dragged here first. Either way, that ring is off... and I fear that there may be more creatures like that here."
Johan objected when Owen suggested to go back. "B-But wait! This is a Dark Tower lab! If those things are causing the Digital World harm, this place might have a way to stop them for good!"
"Knowledge is not useful when you're dead, Johan. I believe we should stick with the Gaomon."
"Oh sure, and just let all those other Digimon suffer like Sten here did. Is that what you really want to do?"
Tension between Johan and Dokamon was thick...

Sten blinked at the digimon around him. His red eyes first laid on the Keramon. While she would ordinarily be a scary digimon, he didn't react negatively, instead giving a polite nod in return. "Hello, Mae. Thanks for getting that ring off".
Mae seemed to agree that it would be a good idea to return to the surface. As did Dokamon, but Johan seemed to argue that they should at least try to find something of use to stop them while they were still down here. Owen could see merit in both options, but he didn't want to go through the risk of upending this place if it meant there'd be a risk of one of them falling victim to one of the "black digicite" tools being used for what seemed to be various nefarious schemes.
Sten agreed with Dokamon that both were valid options. "Perhaps... oh! Right, I remember something!" he turned to Owen. "I remember being asked a question... someone, I don't know who, asked me if I knew of 'The Promised Land'. Then that's when everything went blank".
"The Promised Land?" Owen repeated, raising an eyebrow in confusion. In his books, only those who were completely lost to reality would say something like that. Those and others that were caught up in tragically horrifying cults, but, he had a bad feeling about it nonetheless. The Gaomon then glanced at Johan and Dokamon, who seemed to be disagreeing on whether to stay or go. Owen agreed with the both of them - the dark towers were a threat and they could at least try to find something to use against them. But still, the risk was great. If Bezil, Mae, Dokamon, Sten or himself were ensnared by further dark rings, that would be a severe thing to happen.
So, Owen would suggest a compromise. "Okay. Instead of a full sweep, let's just look for a computer terminal or a notebook, anything that might have information. If we can't find one, we'll leave" he said. "We won't touch anything else".
They'd only remain for a few more minutes. In that time, Bezil turned out to be the one to find the old computer terminal first.
"Dad, I found something!" he called. Owen rushed over, just in time to see the old interface sputter to life. Its old cooling fan rattled as it spun, but, it still seemed to be able to bring light to the screen. And there, on the interface, appeared a map of the digital world mainland. A cross in the Western Flatlands was highlighted, according to what they saw. And it was labelled by an enigmatic phrase. "The Promised Land".
"Huh... As far as I know, that place is just desert" Owen remarked. "What does it mean though?"
His thoughts were cut short by the computer suddenly bursting with sparks, then, all at once, the screen faded to black, completely dead.
"Well, that was... something" Owen remarked. "When we come back here we might wanna get an electrical team to get what data we can. So, anyone find anything else we can get leads on?"
If there wasn't, Owen would insist that they return to the surface. Already he realized that they didn't have diving gear for Sten, so, it'd have to be a quick swim to the surface to get him out of there alive.

Promised Land...That sounded like two things at once. Ominous but also hopeful. "That seems like an okay compromise. I...personally don't really wanna stay here. There's not much we could do without a full team of people down here, I guess...Plus, it's not really gonna go anywhere given it's a lab that not many have the credentials to access...Well. I'm assuming there."
Mae began to slink on back to the entrance, before she realized she should wait for people. "I don't know, but that string of code...I can't really read it. We should find someone who can. Maybe..."
She was quiet for the trip back up. This was all so odd to her...

"I helped to get that ring off of you as well," Dokamon informed Sten, crossing his arms. Then it was back to Johan and Dokamon glaring at each other. The others could DEFINITELY tell that their relationship was pretty flimsy right now. But then Sten mentioned that someone asked about "The Promised Land." "...and what is that, exactly?"
To Johan, he agreed with Owen in the sense that a name liked that sounded like something that would fit right with a cult. And of course, he just wanted to know more about it. He wanted to stop this evil. When Owen suggested finding something like a computer, a light switch went off in Johan's mind. "The computer terminal! Of course!"
And with that, the teenage human ran off at Sonic speed all the way back to the computer. He would begin typing on the keyboard and searching that computer for ANYTHING that might be of use in the fight against these Dark Towers.
"When he gets like this, you can't stop him," Dokamon sighs as he shrugs. Just then, Bezil had found something: an old interface that showed a map of the Western Highlands, with an X pointed on the map. That spot was the supposed "Promised Land."
"Johan might need to know this information. When he does, he'll research to no end on it... sometimes he rarely gives himself a break when it comes to that stuff."

Mae spoke logic there. As confident as Owen was that they could handle whatever was down here, still, there was the fear that looking too closely at something might suddenly make another dark ring latch over his wrist and make him attack others without his control. Or worse, something like that could happen to Bezil. He'd only be comfortable returning here with a team that was fully prepared to deal with such a thing.
Sten then realized that he hadn't yet thanked the other in the party that had helped him. "Oh, yes, thank you" Sten said to Dokamon, bowing slightly. "I owe my freedom to you as well, and I'm sorry if I hurt you..." he turned to Owen. "Did I hurt him, sir?"
"Well, you disregarded my training and spun around like a maniac, so, yeah" Owen replied, giving a grin and speaking in a casual manner. "Disappointing, Sten. I thought I trained you enough to realize that mad spinning isn't a valid combat strategy. Bezil kinda kicked your ass during your "Blue Cyclone" and I haven't even trained him for combat yet".
"Ah... gosh... right, well, I won't be doing that again I suppose" Sten said, chuckling nervously. Still, Bezil glanced between Johan and Dokamon, they seemed to be cross with each other for some reason. However, he knew not to presume to ask what was wrong so he refrained.
But following that, they returned through the tunnel from whence they came. And, all of a sudden, Johan seemed to remember another terminal they had come across. "Of course! Lt. Bredis's entry!" Bezil exclaimed.
"...Bredis?" Sten repeated, a little startled. "That... sounds familiar, but... urgh... I'm so sorry, I wish I could remember".
"Don't worry, Sten, I think I know why you feel this way" Owen said, patting his shoulder. All the treachery of the DWR in the end, it wouldn't surprise him if they had both known this individual, up until the end when he turned traitor on them.
As Johan scoured the workers' computer for information, he would receive a limited amount of information. Namely, pinpointing details of the "Promised Land" as specified down in the lower level. As well as an information file about "black digicite", but very limited in its scope, as the main topic of Bredis's entries was about releasing the seal of Tactimon's sword so he could use it to overrun the DWR, which he had done according to the history books.
Following that, there remained the airlock, where they would have to return to the surface. Owen and Bezil readied their diving gear, but Sten would have to go without. Preparing his old friend, Owen gave instructions to the Gabumon.
"When the water starts coming in, take deep breaths, then, when the lock's about to open and we head back to the surface, breathe out as best you can" the Gaomon instructed the Gabumon. Sten nodded. While they were deep underwater, thankfully they weren't too far down that the pressure would be overwhelming. Swimming back up 70 feet wouldn't be too big an ask.
So, when all was ready, the airlocks opened, water poured in, then the outer doors opened. Owen and Bezil held on to Sten as they brought him back up to the surface. Soon enough, their heads broke the surface, and they realized they were now safe.
"Whew! That seems to be that done then!" Owen exclaimed, finding the nearest building to climb up and headed toward it. Once he and the others climbed on to solid ground, he'd take off his breathing mask to recover, then turn to the others.
"Well, we sure found a lot down there" he remarked. "Say, do any of you have Tamernet? Or a D-Terminal? I think I'd like to stay in touch with you guys so we can figure out this thing in full".
If they did, great. If not, then Owen supposed they would go their separate ways. And, in the end, he supposed that was their right.

Mae simply watched as tension erupted between Johan and Dokamon, and Owen lectured Sten. Huh. Spinning doesn't work. Noted. She didn't quite do much other than stay quiet and read over the information on the terminal--Tactimon's blade sounded like the stuff of legends. Little did she know that it actually -was.-
Mae swam back to the surface with the others after putting her gear back on, and once she was up on solid ground, she was asked about some...thing called Tamernet.
"...I don't know what a tamernet is but I shall look into it. I may not look it, but I live in this really cool place with a lot of books in it. So therefore, I have the potentiality of being the smartest squid in town."
And when they parted ways? "...I suppose I shall be off on my vaporwave adventure."
