Even if things had turned out better than expected during the attack on the Field Club, matters are far from perfect.
Alice paces back and forth in the small, three room cabin she and Dorothy fled to after that calamity. As incredibly as she fought alongside her own Tamer... Things feel different now. And not in a particularly pleasant way.
Alone while Dorothy does something in one of the other rooms, the green haired woman tries to recall what happened when the pair arrived to this small town. Almost as soon as they had arrived, Dorothy insisted on being alone, mumbling to herself about things she knew but didn't understand and being unusually quiet to Alice. The things she caught her Digimon say were somewhat disturbing, to say in the least. Things about things she didn't want to know. Or remember. Things that don't make sense.
All of this culminated in an argument, the green haired woman soon sitting down on a stool as the pain from a series of sharp cuts into her side slowly drip red, the result of Dorothy doing the unthinkable and harming her own Tamer. Taking a deep breath, she tries to push recent events out of her head, knowing that if the witch Digimon really wanted to kill her or deal any serious damage, she would have. But this is still unpleasant, she thinks to herself, the emerald haired woman slipping the lighter out of her pocket and gazing into the flame.
She could run even further if she wanted to. Burn this place down, fade into the background as if she never existed, alongside her partner. The idea lingers in her mind uncomfortably long until she closes the lighter and slips it back into the bag, her thoughts still swimming with doubt and uncertainty. Perhaps seeking someone to share her thoughts with, Alice stands up, and approaches the room where Dorothy went, opening the door slowly and seeing only darkness at first.
Illuminated only by brilliant orange candlelight and the light streaming in through the open door is Dorothy, her blue eyes glowing faintly, her body devoid of anything covering it save for the shadows. A luminescent circle of red surrounds her, inscribed with runes and made on the floor with some sort of arcane chalk, the witch Digimon seemingly in a sort of meditation. She mumbles indecipherable phrases to herself before finally noticing Alice, her eyes narrowing into a glare, the sharp glint of her teeth visible in the shadows. "...I'm just doin' what seems right to me." As soon as Alice enters the darkened room, Dorothy snaps her fingers, and the door closes behind her, leaving the pair alone in the barely lit darkness. "Whatever you're goin' to ask about this, I don't know. Don't care. It just... Came to mind and is helpin' me calm down."
The whole scene makes the green haired woman uncomfortable. "...I wanted to say I'm sorry for waking up all these uncomfortable thoughts. By accident." Just as she's about to take a step forwards, Dorothy snaps her fingers and points a hand at her own tamer without even looking at her, the scattered lights in the room now joined by a glowing green circle of runes.
"I won't hesitate this time. Ya don't... Deserve to be near me. Not after suckin' on my power like a disgustin', filthy leech." As the witch says this, the cuts from Dorothy's lashing out sting on Alice's side even more, enough to cause her to crumple slightly, and the unclothed witch's sharp teeth only becoming more visible as she grins. "That kinda thing ain't natural. What you do is the stuff of legend. The kind with bad endings."
"...What makes it so unnatural? If everyone's so worried about what I did, why doesn't anyone explain?" Alice sighs with relief as her partner lowers her arm and stops charging the air spell, the green haired woman clutching her side, pain still evident from the cuts. "I just want to get some damn answers without people being angry at me, like I'm some kind of freak, is that so hard to ask for? If you know something, why don't you tell me?" The frustration in her voice is clear for Dorothy to hear, the digital sorceress stifling a laugh.
"Oh, c'mon. It should be obvious, what with you doin' the magic equvalent of punching a Digimon in the face 'n actually hurting 'em." Dorothy's eyes roll, and she snaps her fingers again, this time making her usual clothes and her hat appear on herself. "Mark of someone strong. Way strong. Too strong..."
That only raises more questions to Alice. What exactly made her so strong, in Dorothy's terms? A sigh comes from the emerald haired woman, running a hand through it repeatedly as she tries to think of something, anything to say that wouldn't rile up her own partner. "I thought you'd be happy that we finally progressed to the next stage of your... Evolutions. We fought so hard..."
"All so you could steal my thunder 'n use it as your own like some kinda..." There isn't a word to describe just how she feels about Alice right now. Nothing is extreme enough to define the sheer amount of confusion and even fear she has of her own Tamer. To call her an abomination would be both too harsh and yet too little. "Some kinda freak. And that ain't even half of what I wanna say to you." The witch takes off her hat, and stares directly into Alice's eyes with a mild hostility, the candles in the room flaring up slightly, her inhuman features highlighted in the glow. "I don't wanna talk about myself, 'n yet that's all ya wanna do sometimes, y'know?"
"It's because even now, I still know very little about you." Before Alice can continue, she's interrupted by her own partner, the candles still intense and illuminating an aggressive, defiant expression.
"Maybe it's better that way. After all, I never ask 'bout your past. Why you keep lookin' like you wanna use that lighter on stuff, how about you share that with me, first?" Dorothy doesn't seem intent on harming Alice any for now, but she brings an arm to her, nudging the green haired woman closer, taking her stoic silence and judgemental expression to be a no. "...Ya know, I didn't expect anythin' from you, anyways." Alice is soon pushed back, a laugh coming from the witch.
"...Perhaps neither of us are ready to share." The green haired woman states, running a hand through her hair and trying her best to not think about it too much. The last thing either of them need is more to worry about, after all. "I just want to make sure you and I are on the same page. We have to be together, after all..." Alice takes her Digivice out of her pocket, the orange screen just like the intense candlelight, the same shade of yellowish orange befitting a flame. "We're tied together. Someday, we'll have to confess our sins, so to speak." The lights in the room slowly die down, leaving the pair almost, but not quite in complete darkness, and Dorothy finally speaks up again.
Her tone is calmer and less hostile, but at the same time, a subtle bitterness lies underneath. "...Hope it's soon. You ain't exactly one to be calm when you wanna talk 'bout that kinda stuff. Just sayin'. You'll know when I wanna talk 'bout myself." Placing that hat of hers back atop her head, she snaps her fingers and the door opens. "We got more pressin' issues, either way. Like this dumb place."
"Rosewood isn't a dumb place. It's a perfectly pleasant small town." She chuckles a bit at that. It's true that it's pleasant, but Rosewood, for all its' rustic charm, is the kind of place that tourists would probably swarm relentlessly, to say in the least. If such a place existed in the Human World, it would probably have at least a thousand people at any given moment snapping pictures of it and the surrounding area and clogging every space imaginable. Perhaps it's for the best this place isn't all that popular yet. "It's not very far from here, has everything we need... And I think we need some time to take in what's happened recently, relax... And forget a few things."
Dorothy just laughs as Alice heads out of the room and back into the light, only speaking once the two are away from the witch Digimon's eerie magic circle. "Finally, somethin' I agree with." pushing her hat back so it doesn't obscure her vision, she makes a sarcastic chuckle, looking to her Tamer with a smirk. "Got any ideas? Make it quick, This kinda place makes me wanna cause trouble."
"You've already done enough of that." The mild wound on Alice's side stings, and she holds her side with a slight glare, the pain having come back as she begins to move around more. "What with actually attacking me. You're unpredictable... I was thinking I could do something for this little town." Alice slips out a different notebook than her usual out of her bag, and smiles, looking to Dorothy with a faint smile. "Something I've always wanted to try. And unlike the Human World, I don't have to fit some arbitrary qualifications. I've always wanted to help people learn, it's part of why I was so interested in the Field Club in the first place."
"So you wanna be a teacher?" The words come out of Dorothy's mouth almost as if she can't believe such a statement, holding back entire minutes of laughter. "Ya know what, you do that. Whatever helps ya get a hold of yourself."
"...I also have something to ask of you." The green haired woman stops holding her side, the red on her fingers an obvious sign of what happened earlier. "...Don't ever hit me like that again. You could have killed me." As optimistic as she sounds about everything else, this is something she's very serious about. "I'll be fine, just keep in mind that humans aren't very durable." She grumbles a bit after saying this. "You're lucky this injury isn't that bad."
Dorothy looks at the minor wound with a slightly unsettling curiosity. but she soon nods, not wanting to let anyone in on her own curiosity towards humans. How strange of them to be bags of sentient meat, not a single bit of intentional, rational design in them... How bizarre. How beautifully disgusting. "Guess so. Ya sure you don't need a doctor for that, or are ya gonna be good?"
"I said I'll be fine." Alice insists, the Witchmon's Tamer shaking her head stubbornly, putting all her things back away, and letting out an almost defeated sigh. No matter how serious the injury, the exact same response would likely come out of her mouth. "We'll probably head back home and patch it up if we need to... Though I do like it here."
"You always like it in the Digital World." Dorothy's response makes both of them chuckle, and the two smile together for what feels like the first time in ages.
Even if the bond between the two feels more strained than ever.
