This thread will be a Rosewood Town E job, done solo. Skye is the principal character, but a bunch of my other characters will be present as NPC's.
The state the digital world was in at this moment... Skye was incredibly restless about it. The Gatomon simply wanted it to be peaceful and harmonious, but there were so many warring factions, so much conflict, it seemed almost impossible. Therefore, when she settled down in the town of Rosewood in the Eastern Timberlands, she felt much better. Here, conflict was almost nonexistent, outside the normal problem digimon of course.
But, the thing that she had picked up on most was that her former captain lived here now. In the old days, back when the Digital World Republic, or DWR was in its ascent, he had been her commanding officer. Captain Jaelin of the 7/71st Recon Battalion. But now, he seemed to be a different digimon. Firstly, because he called himself "Owen" now, but secondly, because he no longer seemed to hold any interest in protecting the digital world anymore. And for this, Skye felt hurt by all that. That he was so easily able to discard his past and heritage, but she was left to carry on with all her past torments and ghouls, would he truly leave her to such a fate?
She would find out for sure when Owen would formally invite her to the North Rosewood Inn, one of the new establishments built when the one inn proved to be too much for the village. One inn had expanded to five, all run by different digimon. The North inn was run by a Gabumon that Skye swore she knew once. But, his name didn't arrive to her mind here.
Still, she was thankful for the hospitality. As was her companions, Hickory the Chuumon and Jorge the Shoutmon. While Hickory was from the Dark Area and Jorge was apparently an ex-king, the two tended to be fairly adaptable in all living arrangements they had experienced so far. And so, she had arrived in the North Inn, where she met her old Gaomon friend.
"Thanks so much for coming here, Skye" Owen said to her, standing on the performing stage with a bunch of other digimon. And a human even.
"...you're welcome" Skye answered. While she knew of her old comrade's operations, she didn't yet know if she wanted to return to the fold. While she didn't want to spoil their reunion, she was still cautious of what awaited her here. But, when Owen offered his arms, she accepted his embrace, and was glad to feel it. She knew he was about to be married to another, so his feelings were with this Hikaru the Dorumon in all things. But still, she felt a small amount of solace in his embrace. But, seemingly all too soon, it ended, and then Skye felt as though she knew less than she had before.
"So... why did you invite me here, Owen?" she asked. "I've... been trying to go about my life while respecting what happened with the 7/71st before, but, still..." she broke off here, wanting to say further about how she felt somewhat incomplete in this new life, ending up doing things that made her feel uncomfortable; morally disturbed.
"Well, Skye... the main reason... I remember an old song that meant a lot to us" the Gaomon admitted, which made Skye stare. "We used to sing it on our marches, hold our paws to our digicores and recite it... the DWR might be gone, but, I... I want to think that the things we stood for back then, we can still stand for today".
"Owen... that song..." Skye began, looking at the others that seemed like they wanted to perform it. "I... I haven't heard it in so long" the Gatomon admitted. Her digicore pulsed with emotion, then, eventually, her desires could hold out no longer. "Please play it".
Song that's played.
"Okay" the Gaomon said, then nodded to his companions. The first to play was two digimon, a Veemon dressed in a red tunic and brown vest, and an Elecmon dressed in a blue shirt. The Veemon played a violin, while the Elecmon played an acoustic guitar and sang, before the human on the stage joined in with his own guitar.
"Here's two thousand bits on the drum, For those who volunteer to come,
To 'list and fight the foe today, Over the Hills and far away~
O'er the hills and o'er the main, Through Forest, Desert and the Plains
We watch the night and march the day, Over the hills and far away~"
Skye recognized the song at once. Hearing it sung here, today, with the warm, mellow voice of that Elecmon, it stirred something within her. Next, Owen played a celtic whistle, while an Impmon began to play a bass guitar, adding to the song.
"When duty calls me I must go, To stand and face another foe
But part of me will always stray, Over the hills and far away~"
The chorus was repeated, and, to Skye's wonder, a Guilmon dressed similarly to the Veemon began playing a set of drums with his claws. Just... what was this? She wanted to ask, but, she remained silent. A large part of her wanted this song to wash over her, to remember her old life, and what it meant.
Then, all of a sudden, a furred Gumdramon stepped forward, dressed in a kilt, looking very proud as he began to play an instrument that Skye vaguely recognized as bagpipes. The Elecmon continued with the lyrics as he played the guitar.
"If I should fall to rise no more, As many comrades did before
Then ask the fifes and drums to play, Over the hills and far away~"
The chorus was repeated. Skye had to wipe her eyes from tears as she remembered this song so many times before. Owen... he had taught all of his friends to play this, told them the words, just for her. And that Gumdramon, he had Owen's yellow eyes, of course, he was his son, how could she not see that? From here on out, Skye merely listened to the words, recognizing them, but she no longer needed to hear the message of this song. She waited until its end, then walked up to the stage and embraced her old Captain warmly.
"Captain Jaelin... Owen... I remember" she said. "Thank you. I... needed a place to return to. So... can I stay here?"
"Of course you can, Lieutenant Skye" Owen replied, glad he had finally got through to her with this song. He would be eternally grateful to Roy and Rex the dragon twins, as well as Colin James and his partners Luke and Bellamy. And most of all, his son Bezil, who had eagerly learned the bagpipes from his fiance Hikaru's scottish influence. As for Skye's companions, they had noticed how much this performance had meant for Skye, so they said nothing, but, both were impressed by all of this. And, from what they knew of Skye so far, if this place made her happy, then they would be satisfied with it as well.
"Heh, we should play that more often, I like it" the Impmon named Bellamy remarked, grinning. Skye was happy with that prospect, but, at the moment, she would need a little while to recover her composure after all that.
For now, she would simply settle down and aim to get back into her own equilibrium once more.
