It's always easier to go into the unknown with someone else. Makes things more bearable if they go wrong...
It was the beginning of August. Summer was getting both hotter and rainier, with the streets being drenched in water and drying up just as quickly, making Shibuya feel very humid. The application exams for High Schools, which took place in July, where already over, and now crowds of students were swarming the bulletin boards of their respective schools of interest, hoping to see their names and numbers among those chosen. This rainy day was no different. Lots of colorful umbrellas of all shapes and sizes. Some came with their parents, wanting for them to see their success, or to offer a shoulder to cry on in case if failure. Those usually huddled at the back of the line, too uncertain and shy to approach. Among them, was a group of five girls, all carrying umbrellas, and wearing light summer clothes.
Yomi was among that group. The other four girls were her best friends from the middle school. One of them, the tallest one, was Takeko, who everyone else called Takeko-san, due to how soft-spirited and mature she was. The girl held a large umbrella, enough to cover the smallest one of the group, Chiko, who looked like a 4th-grader. Despite the size, and despite being younger a few years, Chiko was the smartest girl in the party. She could have easily graduated somewhere else, but wanted to stay with her friends. Orihime and Kaya were the odd-balls of the group, with the former, despite showing an occasional stroke of intellect, always being with her head in the sky, and the other being too obnoxious for her own good. Only three out of five knew their results by now, waiting for the other two to face their fate on the bulletin board.
"Reeee! I do not want to go and look! What if I didn't pass? What if I didn't pass?" - Kaya reeled and squirmed, while holding on to Orihime, who was offering her ineffectual pats on the back.
"Yes yes, what a calamity it would be..." - she muttered while fiddling with a lucky charm she had bought in earlier. Yomi looked at this distress with a mix of pity and annoyance, as the two were making her nervous also. Not for herself, as her own score was just enough to pass, but for these two. They were friends, after all. Imagining them going somewhere else felt... Wrong, somehow. Frowning and fixing the glasses on her nose, she approached, and placed her hands on Kaya and Orihime's backs.
"Maybe going to another school would be a good thing. I'm tired of enduring your shenanigans for three years straight." - she said to Kaya, who responded with a catface.
"Oh is that so, Yomi-kun? Then why didn't you apply for another scho-ACK!
A powerful smack of righteous punishment landed on the back of Kaya's head for calling Yomi a -kun. She then grabbed the two short girls by the scruffs of their necks, and pushed them towards the bulletin board, despite the flailing and protests. Shoving some folks out of the way, until the three were finally at their destination. Standing up close, the two fidgeted, and their eyes scanned the sheets, hoping to find their numbers. Yomi looked too, as there were so many, and it was hard to find a specific number when all the others differed from one another by such a small margin.
"I can't find mine anywhere... - Kaya muttered.
" What a calamity..." - Orihime mumbled along.
"C'mon, there are more sheets to the left, maybe you two are there..."
And so went the pushing and shoving routine, as they scanned one row of papers after another. Yomi felt a knot building up at her throat, as she looked back. Takeko and Chiko looked back at her, and she made a shrugging notion, meaning that they were still looking. Yomi was starting to feel a bit bad about the tease she said earlier, the expression slowly changing for an apologetic one, as she was already starting to figure out what to say. It's not the end of the world... I mean... we'd still be able to see each other after school... - the girl with intact glasses was thinking to herself, as the crowd nearing the right part of the bulletin board was dissipating, some of the more sensitive girls in tears, and boys looking duped when not finding their names in there. Kaya's and Orihime's flailings were slowing down too, as they were slowly getting to come to grips with the reality. Yomi hated to see Kaya miserable, so she placed a hand on her friend's shoulder.
"Hey... there's another school not too far away. Its passing grades are a bit lower, and it's the the same walking direction, so maybe..." - the girl's mutterings were suddenly halted, as Kaya pressed a hand to her chest, as it saying to stop, as her finger slowly slid down the list and pointed at the last number and the number before it. As the three focused on those, and Yomi fixed her glasses back to her nose to see better, the three of them slowly realized something. And soon, three big dumb grins appeared on their faces.
The three of them broke up from the crowd.
"Yatta! We passed! We passed!" - Kaya ran into the rest of their friends head-first, with Orihime affectionately running behind.
"What a glorious victory it is~" - she said before being hugged by Chiko. Takeko-san smiled, faintly, looking briefly at Yomi, who came last, with a happy smile on her face. Kaya made a sharp turn and pointed a finger at her, making her stop.
"And Yomi here already started chanting an eulogy for the both of us before we finished looking!"
"Don't get too cocky, lil' brat, you only passed by the skin of your teeth."
"Ha! You just don't wanna admit that I'm every bit as smart as you are! EEEEEEK!
Kaya did not manage to escape this time, as Takeko silently approached from behind and restrained the brat with her long, strong arms, allowing Yomi plenty of opportunities to deliver a noogie. All five of them laughed, cheerfully, and soon left the place for somewhere warm and cozy, like a cafeteria. Their faces beaming with cheer and happiness, Yomi's most of all. All five of them ended up in the same school again, meaning that even if they'd be placed in different classes, they would still see each other again.
And that, in Yomi's mind, was what mattered the most. She would not want to lose any of them.
Even Kaya.
