[attr="class","hiraeth"]猿も木から落ちる。 | [attr="class","achee"] [attr="class","castleonthehill"] ☸ Were it possible to see with her own eyes, Amelie would definitely have been able to perceive large plumes of hot steam rolling out of Saruyuki's ears; not due to swelling anger, as would have probably been the case if this were a typical encounter, but out of the sheer confusion he felt with how cool and informed her own strategies were. It was enough of a confirmation for the schoolboy to realize that he was being severely overestimated, despite the numerous attempts to make this fact obvious. Modest or not, Saruyuki had almost come to regret ever agreeing to entertain Amelie's wish for an opponent, as he was nowhere near her level of understanding, even with the bare minimum amount of information needed to know the movement rules of each piece. The keyword here was 'almost'. Saruyuki clenched a fist in his lap, as if he were crushing a piece of invisible paper. He might have been several things according to most people—a loser, an idiot, a worthless polyp, a leech, a parasite—but he would never allow himself to stoop so low as to resign to the idea of being an outright quitter. Even at the climax of The Way of the Dragon, Tang Lung never permitted the world-class American fighter called Colt to simply end his life, even after the latter was mercifully presented a chance to walk away with his dignity intact. If it was his destiny to experience the bitter taste of defeat, then, so be it. Saruyuki would make like a phoenix and burn out, and rise again, with spectacular fire and glory. When the Black Queen's knight was moved into play, Saruyuki took a moment to process Amelie's interest in his chosen passions. His smile recedes considerably, but he looks straight at his acquaintance with renewed vigor, takes a deep breath, and calmly sighs. " It taught me the value of improving myself," he begins, " Stuff like honor and integrity, honesty and loyalty, self-reliance... Growing up, I never had nobody teach me how important those things are." Not even the use of proper Japanese grammar was as crucial to Saruyuki. " Most of all, though, it showed me that actions have gotta speak louder than anything you have to say." In that same instant, Saruyuki takes a wild gamble, and positions his kingside knight directly in front of the bishop's pawn. If Amelie wanted to capture his piece, even if this were a deliberate ploy on her own end, she had better be prepared to lose one herself. The real game started now. ✉ tag -- ( Amelie ) ✎ 429 words ※ HNNNGGGG |

Placidly making herself comfortable on her seat, Amelie's eyes shot a couple of furtive glances around. She had been a bit too absorbed by the game that she had forgotten about her surroundings for a bit! The sky had shown the first signs of the sunset's advent, but there was still plenty of time left before the event happened. Or at least, that's what the brunette thought. Time tended to fly while you were having fun, after all! To say the least, her eyes and attention became affixed to Saruyuki. Guess that was how the guy behaved when talking about his convictions? It was an interesting change of pace from the otherwise mild, relatively soft-spoken blonde. Lest to say, Amy preferred that attitude to the previous, by a long shot; no matter how brief, a glimpse into a person's inner flames was a fascinating experience. "I see." She responded while watching the kingside's horse jumping straight to the frontlines, just in time to save the threatened pawn from a flawless capture. Naturally, that meant the game had just become all the more interesting! In a sense, that move would mark the beginning of the first true clash between the white and the black army. Time to get things started. "That's admirable. Being able to learn so much about something that some people just watch for entertainment, I mean." She made a small pause as her right hand was placed atop her queen. "I think that those are good values; the hallmark of a well-built person. Keep on upholding them, because it's pretty obvious they've been dwindling as of late..." The queen was slowly nudged diagonally, ending up directly in front of the bishop. As slight as that move was, it could be interpreted as a formal declaration of war. Chances were that at least two pieces would be captured in the next couple of rounds. "Ever seen the movie Amélie?" She asked, suddenly changing the topic into a more lighthearted note. "The first foreigner I played with over here told me I reminded him of that movie. At that time, I didn't know if to take it as a compliment or not, honestly!" Was it okay to suddenly drag the topic towards her? Saruyuki didn't seem like the type who liked to ask questions, so this would maybe prompt him. If not, she could always keep on asking! It'd probably be a long game, after all.

[attr="class","hiraeth"]猿も木から落ちる。 | [attr="class","achee"] [attr="class","castleonthehill"] ☸ Amelie's compliments are met with clumsy, awkward silence from her male opponent, who finds himself incapable of responding with gratitude on account of how utterly forthright she was being. Was this symptomatic of personal weakness? Hardly, no, especially considering that she was able to recognize—and even validate—that Saruyuki's beliefs were coming from a good place. But this entire experience was as new to him as this game of chess; he wasn't used to being on the receiving end of anything outside of hostile energy, black eyes, and broken bones. Of course, Saruyuki hadn't expected her to take the strongest piece in the Black army, the Queen herself, and push her into play by one square. Perhaps he had erred in attempting to defend his pawn from what would have otherwise been an inevitable attack? Maybe, but Sun Tzu once claimed that opportunities always existed amidst even the greatest chaos, and even the lowliest soldier could prove invaluable if deployed in the right moment. A large bead of sweat rolls down his temple. When Amelie asks him a question regarding another movie, one that just so happened to share her name, Saruyuki shakes his head and says, " Never heard of it. Does she kick a lot of ass?" Although he chuckles to break the tension hanging from his shoulders, his own inquiry is delivered with earnest curiosity. From how eloquently she pronounced its title, it didn't sound like a martial arts epic, but perhaps this was a subtle cue to branch out and try new things, much as he did with today's game. As vestiges of the evening sun began to blanket Miyashita Park in vibrant and colorful hues, Saruyuki studies the layout of the board and, after nearly a full minute of deliberation, he makes a play that was he was utterly banking on to do one of two things: either this would completely throw Amelie off her game and get her to start plotting more elaborate moves, or it would provide her with enough incentive to get extremely aggressive. Either of these options were fine; after all, being a newbie at chess, Saruyuki didn't anticipate much further than his own decisions. However, he was sure to capture her attention. He pushes the King forward one space. ✉ tag -- ( Amelie ) ✎ 379 words ※ IT'S HAPPENING |

Saruyuki's question slash answer was met with a giggle coming from Amelie. It wasn't meant to mock him or anything; it was just the fact that a little French woman kicking ass was too funny of a mental image to not react that way. Eventually, she settled down, an entertained smile clearly shining clear on her features. "Regrettably not, as fun as that would've been to see. It's a movie without fights, at least of the physical kind. A romantic comedy, even though it has some very funny elements; if it's not your jam, you should probably watch it exactly up to the fourteenth minute and then call it a day. It won't disappoint, I swear!" Then again, those kinda scenes weren't for everyone, so she could understand! Whether controversial or not, the brunette had seen them in a rather funny light. In any case, that was probably not important at the moment, not to say that it was rude to laugh at a joke only you could understand. That only you could understand; a statement that could apply to the situation at hand as well. Moving the king meant that any opportunities for castling had just been thrown off the window. At least in her mind, that hadn't been a good move, and thus wouldn't deter her from executing the planned attack. The previously-deployed knight leaped through the battlefield, completing the capture of the blonde's pawn. Gingerly, Amy took the piece and set it aside behind her board. It had taken a bit, but that was the game's first blood, and potentially the herald of the engagement that would begin. "That was an interesting move." The brunette remarked while waiting for Saruyuki's turn. It was fair to say that, at least for now, the center of the board w0as dominated by the black army; an interesting turn of events! "The king is seldom moved early in the game, because it's mostly powerless and easily to threaten with more powerful pieces. Can't say I'm not looking forward to see what will come out of that move. Do you have any other hobbies besides watching movies? I'm curious about it." After all, it wasn't like a healthy person could just live off movies, and given that Saruyuki had accepted a chess match so readily, at least that should imply he liked at least some kind of board game? It was a wild guess, but it could be!

[attr="class","hiraeth"]猿も木から落ちる。 | [attr="class","achee"] [attr="class","castleonthehill"] ☸ Saruyuki's exchange with Amelie was definitely one-sided, that much even he could determine for himself. Even a total chess novice would have berated him for making such a questionable play, but her? This was far more difficult than any fight he had ever involved himself with, and it was an encounter that was liable to keep him awake at night, for reasons he would never fully comprehend. The mere thought of being unable to know who he was dealing with made Saruyuki visibly squirm in his seat, and the abundance of questions made him feel like he was being interrogated. Who exactly was this woman, really? " I exercise?" Saruyuki's tone elevates, as if he were asking a question himself. " Honestly, I'm a pretty boring person to be around. I can't really make it any more apparent than I have already." His self-deprecating comments are punctuated with forced laughter, his only means of defense against Amelie's penetrating inquiries. " Besides, I, uh..." The boy's attitude seems to waver between self-debasement and uncertainty, but he cannot bring himself to commit to a full-fledged lie. Not when he's been so candid this entire afternoon. " I don't exactly have a lot of friends." He pushes the King forward another square, as if to illustrate this with a visual reference. If only she knew what Saruyuki did. What he really had to contend with every day. Maybe she'd understand why, then – why he hesitates to give it his all, why he cannot simply reach out and lean on the shoulders of other people, reveal himself as openly as he would like to. Memories of his father's drunken rage, both fresh and old, smolder like hot coals beneath Saruyuki's wooden attempt at a happy smile. A cell phone vibrates furiously in his left pocket. ✉ tag -- ( Amelie ) ✎ 297 words ※ 9-1-1, I'M HAVING AN EXPOSITIONAL CRISIS HERE |

Maybe she shouldn't have asked that question. The tenseness in the atmosphere was rather obvious, even if unintended; had that been another mistake on her part? It seemed like it, yet at the same time, Amelie wondered what exactly was producing those mistakes? Was she too overbearing, or maybe was there something else? "I see. That seems like a bit of an issue." She remarked, a bit plainly. Was she downplaying his issues? It certainly looked like that, at least at a glance. "I think you're a nice guy, though. And wouldn't mind hanging out with you again, as long as want to see the interrogator's face once again." A smile and some humor was probably fitting to try and diminish the sudden tenseness in the atmosphere. She didn't know if not having friends was something that had happened naturally or his choice, but questioning, even on seemingly superfluous topics, had proven to be awkward, so... better to just go back to the basics. Truth was that there were some things that the teenager would never understand about his peer. At least, seemingly not for the foreseeable future. But that was okay; she wouldn't force the issues out of somebody who didn't feel comfortable sharing them in the first place. That just couldn't end well. Instead, Amy's right hand was placed atop the knight once again. The piece moved swiftly across the board and directly into striking distance of the king that had been so carelessly exposed to the brunette's offensive. "Check."

[attr="class","susurrus"] [attr="class","jikan"]
[attr="class","hiraeth"]猿も木から落ちる。 | [attr="class","achee"] [attr="class","castleonthehill"] ☸ Once again, Saruyuki finds himself at a verbal crossroads, unsure of which option to take upon being presented with some not-so-subtle commentary on Amelie's part. She wasn't mistaken, to say the least; most Japanese people considered somebody with a profound lack of companionship to be a red flag, regardless if it was enforced on a social level or deliberately self-induced. But, he kept forgetting she wasn't Japanese. Or maybe this was a product of something that could transcend cultural backgrounds, something Saruyuki lacked the capacity to identify with? Or was she merely just willing to put up with such a harebrained opponent? Who knew? He sure as hell didn't. And speaking of things that Saruyuki was utterly clueless about: the announcement of the game's first instance of check results in him practically gawking at the board's setup, realizing that his deliberate attempts to send a rather clever message were being met with merciless retaliation from the Black army. Jeez, even when she's holding back, she doesn't play around... Saruyuki ponders to himself, scratching his temple with a finger as if he were hoping to claw his own brain out. Perhaps for the first time throughout this whole encounter, Saruyuki attempted to do what he normally did in a physical engagement, yet neglected to do everywhere else; he tried to think several steps ahead. Alas, he was being forced—no, corralled—to move the White King leftward so that Amelie could ultimately use her pawns to trap it. He could have moved it backwards, but that in itself would have been a deliberate act of desperation on his own end, a means to stall for time he simply just didn't have. If he moves upward, the Queen could also intercept. Anywhere else in that same general direction, the Black King's bishop would have swept in to block its advance. Another axiom from Sun Tzu scrolls through Saruyuki's mind, which helps to ease the disappointment settling in his heart: "He who knows when he can fight and when he cannot, shall be victorious." And if there was anything he could take away from this experience, it was that there was a distinctive difference between quitting and surrender. On the plus side, he didn't have to worry about any mutinies. The phone in his pocket rumbles ever more viciously, which steals the teenager's attention away from this losing battle. He knew exactly who was trying to contact him, but rather than drag an unrelated person into his growing list of personal issues, he simply closes his eyes and smirks. His hamfisted attempts to be clever aside, bad moves were bad moves, no matter how he sliced the cheese. " I think you got me cornered, Amelie-san. I know when I'm beat," Saruyuki throws his hands up apologetically, shrugging, although he does this without the intent to seem flippant or uncaring for his opponent's victory, which was genuinely a deserved one. " I probably shouldn't have done it, but I wanna think I made the right move anyway. A king should face death with honor instead of trying to live on borrowed time." Just then, a bellowing yawn follows, one that could not be more perfectly timed. " Besides, it's getting late, and I've got school tomorrow. Last thing I need on my record is another detention." Unfortunately, his headache hadn't exactly faded since that earlier mishap, and Saruyuki was willing to attribute his poor sense of gameplay to it. He just hoped it wouldn't bear a negative impact on his ability to concentrate in the classroom. A tinkling chime then emanates from his pocket, serving as an audible cue that he had missed a phone call. Deliberately ignoring this electronic tone, Saruyuki stands up from the park bench with his sack of DVDs in tow, and offers a hand to Amelie, halfway out of remorse for being what she probably would have considered a 'poor sport', and halfway out of gratitude for putting up with him in a way he never truly had a chance to appreciate before. " It was good playing with you. I might just ask my uncle to gimme some lessons one day, so then I can actually stand a chance in a real game," Saruyuki postulates aloud, feeling satisfied enough to know that he could accept his defeat with some semblance of dignity. Whether she accepted his parting handshake or not, Saruyuki was able to leave Miyashita Park feeling refreshed in spite of his fall, and—surprisingly enough—a little smarter. He smiles to himself, rolling his injured shoulders. Maybe he ought to play chess more often? [ THREAD EXIT ] ✉ tag -- ( Amelie ) ✎ 765 words ※ THIS WAS A FUN THREAD! No direct response. That was okay, maybe her words had been a little too bold; another failed gambit, even though the ultimate results of it had been quite telling, nonetheless. Despite her blunder, this game had taught her some valuable lessons.
A calm expression remained etched on her face while she waited for a response to her move. Instead, she got a capitulation, of all things? Talk about unexpected, even if not completely impossible; a measure of shock was visible through her eyes. Perhaps that was when she truly realized that this guy just wouldn't stop surprising her, no matter what.
Yet, even with that into account, she couldn't say this hadn't been an enjoyable experience. It wasn't hard to expect her to rise up and take Saruyuki's hand. She shook it and nodded. "I had fun. Guess I'll catch you later, Takemitsu-san. Or maybe not, who knows! Bye-bye."
Hands parted as the teen left in the cover of the fading sunset. What about Amy? She sat down once again, just to rearrange the pieces on their proper places before doing the same. One game had been enough for the evening even if it had ended early and abruptly.
All things considered, she had a lot to think about. Time to head back. [Exit]
