A Stick of Trouble [Toki]

The sun was edging close to sunset over Rosewood. The sky was streaked with a pastel gradient that stretched east to west in a subdued display of the colors of rainbow. Street lights were beginning to flick on one street at a time and it was beneath one of these streetlights that a certain street food cart was positioned.
"I should be able to put stickers on my hard hat! It won't damage the hat!"
"Stickers are dumb! You only want to make it look pretty!"
A food cart with very noisy customers.
Seated on the bench was a red haired young woman who alternated pulling dango off a stick with arguing with a Kunemon seated next to her. There was a Fanbeemon on the other side of her who seemed to be doing his best to ignore them while he delicately finished his own skewer of dango.
The Igamon standing on the other side of the food cart chuckled as he handed back a roughed up digivice to the woman.
"Gyahahah! If all partners are like you two I don't know how you get anything done!" He said.
"Thankfully they're not!" The woman replied as she took her digivice back. She stuck her tongue out at the Kunemon then picked up a jacket from the bench beneath her, swinging it onto her shoulder before holding out her arm. "C'mon Roger, we've gotta find somewhere to sleep tonight."
"Pfft, if you weren't such a chicken we could just sleep in a tree." Roger, the Kunemon complained. He bunched up on the bench then threw himself at the offered arm. He draped himself over her shoulder like a scarf and clung there as they began to walk away from the food stall. "I could just web you up and you'd be fine! It'd be super easy."
"Your web loses its adhesive properties after roughly twelve seconds." The Fanbeemon replied. He pushed his plate forward and nodded to the shop keep who nodded back.
"I'll see you lot again soon!" He called as the Fanbeemon followed the other two. With that he turned to scan the rest of the crowd and held up a skewer with fresh dango speared on it. "Come get a nice hot snack folks! I've got dango, I've got squid, I've even got fried flowers!"
Unbeknownst to him and the group, a plain black purse laid on the ground beneath bench where the red head had been seated.

Toki wandered the streets of Rosewood, as he usually does to relax and clear his mind. He looked at some of the Digimon trying to find a place for themselves after being displaced by the recent attack, hoping dearly that they find opportunities here. It must have been so difficult to adjust things for them all, but he appreciated Rosewood welcoming the refugees with open arms. For now though, he wanted to grab something to snack on and get his mind off the bleakness of what had transpired.
He saw the food cart as well as a human and what he assumed to be her Digimon leave it. He approached the cart only to notice something under the bench. Toki knelt down to pick it up, then at the woman who was walking away "Hey! Hey miss?" he called out as he followed them and held out the purse to her "I think this is yours. I found it under the food cart over there." he said as he handed it over happily. He didn't seem to have any Digimon with him.
He looked at her Digimon and waved at them with a smile "Hi there everyone. My name's Toki Akiyama. I'm glad I was round. Losing one's bag is not a fun thing to deal with." The young man seemed to have an almost unbreakable, happy demeanor as he spoke. He was kind of intimidating though with his imposing height and scar across his lip, though that beaming smile contrasted all of that.
"I hope I'm not being nosy, but what brings you all to Rosewood today? If you need a place to rest your head I know a great in nearby just a few streets down. Well...to be fair a lot of inns have cropped up to help with the refugee influx after what happened a while back. Still, this one's especially nice if you ask me."

"Hello there sir what would you li-" Igamon broke off as Toki picked up the purse and hurried off in pursuit of the previous customers. A grin appeared on the ninja's face as he watched the male human run off.
It kindled the heart to see people doing good in the world.
"Its a good jacket! It has a purp-hhm?" Hiroyo craned her neck to look past Roger then physically stopped to turn around at the sound of yelling. Was it them the person was yelling at? The red head pointed a finger at her own face when she spotted Toki heading towards them, a curious look on her face. "Wait, me? You're looking for-oh! My purse~!"
She reached out to take it with a thankful look, her hand brushing his as she closed it around the strap then pulled the purse onto her Kunemon-free shoulder. She didn't even bother to check to see if he had tampered with her purse. "Thank you so much! I'd be pretty lost without it!"
Either she realized he didn't have enough time to do so, or she was really trusting. The Fanbeemon, on the other hand, was eying Toki rather interestedly.
"Wow, I can't believe you forgot your purse!" Roger snarked, readjusting himself on Hiroyo's shoulder. There was a subtle shifting of the bug digimons' positions. Toki, with his experience fighting, would probably recognize it as the two insinuating themselves between the red head and a possible threat.
Not that it mattered at all when Hiroyo stepped forward with her hand out for a handshake. "It's nice to meet you! I'm Hiroyo Oda and this is Roger, and Morgan." She said and gestured with her free arm to the Kunemon and Fanbeemon in turn. "We had somewhere to stay but there were some booking issues."

Toki smiled warmly "Don't worry about it. I'm just glad I was able to catch you in time." he felt a little embarrassed when her hand touched his, but he didn't really let it show. "Things have been pretty busy around here lately, so I can easily imagine losing track of belongings in all the activity going on. It's good to triple check that you got everything. Make sure everything's in there, by the way."
He eyed the teasing Digimon for a moment, but realized they were also sizing him up. He raised his hands, palms up "Sorry if I startled you all. I'm friendly, promise." he said to the two Digimon with a bright smile on his face. "Hey, don't go teasing her about that now. A lot's going on, you know? Let's just be thankful everything worked out and we can get along."
He shook Hiroyo's hand "It's lovely to meet all of you." he said. He thought for a moment on how he could help them "Well a lot of inns are apparently propping up due to the refugee influx. That could also explain why there's some booking issues in some of the places around here. If you'd like I can walk with you until you all find out what to do?" he offered. It was getting a little late and he didn't want to leave this group without a place to stay for the evening.
Now what should they talk about to kill time...? "So in case you were wondering, I'm a spirit user." he gestured around himself to show there was no Digimon with him. He even showed his Digivice "In case you were wondering why I didn't have a Digimon with me, anyway. When did the three of you meet? I love hearing stories about how people meet their friends."

It was heartening to meet someone who understands that sometimes things just happen. Hiroyo's smile turns into a relieved one as Toki proves to be a reasonable fellow by mentioning that sometimes things get left behind when there's a lot going on! It's a nice change of pace to say the least.
If she notices his embarrassment at the casual touch she doesn't show it, she's too busy settling the strap over her windbreaker.
"Friendly, my beak." Roger grumbled as he hunched up on Hiroyo shoulder. She rolled her eyes and reached up to give him a rather stern tap on the face with her finger.
"Sorry about him, it has been a long, long day." She said with a shrug of her unoccupied shoulder as if to say 'what can you do?'. She seemed amused at the suggestion about checking the contents of her bag. Dutifully she lifted the near-new bag in her hands and opened the top and began rummaging inside.
"Walking and talking would be the most efficient. If you are familiar with the area your help would be most welcome." Morgan piped in. The Fanbeemon's body was hanging down from his wings and his limbs were loose, he had relaxed from his earlier battle readiness. With a wave of his foreclaw he gestured for the human male to lead the way. "We are not familiar with these streets yet."
"Oh, a Spirit Wielder. Makes sense!" Hiroyo said, pausing in her purse digging as she followed Toki closely. She was beaming, evidently very proud of herself for her deductions, simple as they were. "I knew you couldn't be new, you weren't freaking out, so that left experienced."
"He could be foolish enough to get seperated from his 'mons in a stupid fog in a stupid forest with stupid eggs running around." Roger growled. The Kunemon huffed as Hiroyo scowled at him and rapped his beak with her knuckles - it didn't hurt but the censor was clear and even Morgan was glaring at him. He reshuffled himself on Hiroyo's shoulder so he was facing behind the group as they walked.
"Sorry, about him, again.. It really has been uh, rough." For a moment Hiroyo's hand reached up to the top of her head as if to adjust something. There was only very frazzled hair there, and her hand retreated back to her purse to zip it up with a quick pat and an awkward grin. "What I have left is there! Not much since it's a new purse but still good to have it."

Toki just smiled in response to the apology. "Ah, don't worry about it. I know all too well how stressful things can be here. People being on edge from time to time is only natural given to state of things as of late." he said as he walked slightly ahead of them to lead the way "Let's see...there should be an inn a little ways down this road to the right..."
Though what Roger said seemed oddly specific "I'm guessing what Roger was saying is based on a recent experience. Glad you're all okay...well, you seem okay, anyway. If you'd like to talk about it I wouldn't mind listening." he offered with a smile. "If not, that's totally understandable. Your business is your own, but sometimes it's nice to be reminded other people are out here looking out for each other."
He watched as Hiroyo checked her purse and was glad nothing was lost or misplaced. He caught them at just the right time. "Can't have you losing something you just got, right?" As they walked, Toki looked around, as if making sure everything around them was okay "Rosewood's become quite the town hasn't it? It's not quite the size and crowd Terminus and Whitewater are, but I kind of prefer it that way. It's tranquil here most of the time and the people here are kind and welcoming."
Soon they made it to the inn Toki was talking about. The modest little sign hung on one of the branches indicating that it was indeed what they were looking for. "This is the place. Doesn't seem too crowded, so hopefully you'll be able to get a room for the night." Toki walked inside with them and waited for the group to settle in and continue the conversation whenever they were ready.

It was hard to believe Toki at first. No, rather it was hard to let herself believe in Toki's kindness at first.
Hiroyo was pretty sure that was because of the recent mess she and the twins had been caught up in and the fallout that wasn't quite done yet. Still! What to say about the forest? She glanced at Roger but he turned away from her. A look at Morgan just had the bee steadily staring back and Hiroyo could feel the sweat beginning to gather at her hairline.
There was a wariness to the look Morgan gave Toki when the spirit-wielder asked about their adventures, and a more stern look at the Kunemon as he started to open his beak. Roger shut his beak and grumbled something inaudible before turning himself about on Hiroyo's shoulder's so he was facing away from Toki. Apparently he wasn't up for being in any conversation for a while.
"Uh, maybe later?" She winced as she rubbed the back of her head, trying to think about how exactly to put everything that had happened into coherent words. She couldn't just go 'hey we almost accidentally helped one of the Demon Lords get these flowers she wanted but she was pretty and I still kind of want to give her the flowers' right? Especially not in front of the twins.
She winced again and dropped her hand from the back of her head, seizing onto the change of topic with more enthusiasm than was strictly called for. "Yes! I mean, I haven't been here before but it seems really nice! It only popped up recently, right?"
The building they eventually reached looked nice enough. Hiroyo would definitely put the sign in the 'quaint' list but not every place she stayed could be ridiculously painful to her wallet!
"Thank you for showing us the way here!" She asked hopefully, pausing only long enough to get an answer before heading over to the desk. It didn't take her long to get a room and soon she returned while dropping her keys in her rather empty purse.
"That was easy! Say uh, would you be willing to show us around town?" She asked with a hopeful look at Toki's face. "Like I said ,we just arrived so we don't really know where anything is."
She paused then licked her lips and looked at Morgan then Roger. "Actually...do you two want to stay at the hotel? You must be pretty worn out."
The look Morgan gave her was dark and Hiroyo gave a nervous little laugh as she edged behind Toki. "Right, right! Probably not my best idea, got it! So uh, Toki, you've been here a while? What's the town like?"

It was very clear that the topic in question wasn't something they wanted to talk about at this moment, something Toki respected. He bowed his head "We don't have to talk about it at all if you don't want to. The offer to get it off your chest remains open, should you change your minds though."
"Yeah this place opened up not too long ago. A few places did, really, though a lot of the refugees seem to be content with the camps at the outskirts of town to recuperate before heading back out to reclaim what's theirs. I admire how fast they're rebuilding." he said as he looked out the window to see others go about their business in town.
He smiled at their gratitude "Oh it's no problem. I get that finding a place to rest, even in town, can be a bit difficult if you don't know where to look. I just like to help people out whenever I see an opportunity to do so."
Then, Hiroyo asked if he could show them around town. "Show you around? Sure, I wouldn't mind. There's quite a few places here that are pretty interesting. Lots of great places to grab a bite to eat, places to do some research and learn about some Digital World history...I know some people who teach here part time, too. What else would you like to know about Rosewood? I helped guide some Rookies here once and helped with some of the construction, so ask away. I mostly helped place down markers for flower gardens, though."
"As for what the town's like...wow, where to begin? You've probably noticed but it's beautiful, lively...getting a bit crowded, but it's not as crowded as the likes of Terminus or Whitewater. I love coming here to relax and unwind after an adventure and meet up with the locals. The people here are so nice, someone else probably would have found you and given you your purse if I hadn't. The fact they've opened their doors to those displaced in the battles earlier just goes to show the lengths they'll go to for each other."

The more Hiroyo listened to Toki the luckier she thought herself to be. He might have only laid down markers for flower beds but he had still been here since the beginning. That sounded like something special to her.
"Thank you for showing us around! But ah, what does it feel like?" She blurted out, immediately blushing a bit at how weirdly her words came out. She couldn't help but think that it had to be interesting to see something that a person had helped start become even bigger. "Ah, I mean, watching the town grow? You feel at least a little bit of ownership in it don't you? After all you had a hand in helping it grow, no matter how small."
"Pfft, who'd feel ownership about something like a flower bed?" Roger grumbled as he flippantly tossed his head. "It's just flowers!"
"The people who planted them would care, as would the people who enjoy them later." Morgan shot his brother a firm look. Roger chittered at him grumpily then dropped his head with a grumble. His tail moved slowly against Hiroyo's back then laid still again.
"Mrph, stupid."
Hiroyo sighed as Roger quieted down again and instead turned her attention back to Toki. "Yeah, I hear you on the size thing. I usually hang out in Whitewater on this side so it's pretty weird how it's all quiet! It feels like maybe I've gone back in time to a different era, y'know? Even with the electricity and stuff. Same with the way people act! It's like how I imagine a small town would feel like."
She rubbed the back of her head and sighed, frustrated at the poor way she was explaining it. She sighed eventually and smiled at him again, her hand dropping back to her side. "Anyways, uhm, you mentioned something about places to do research right? Do you think we could go there first? I have something I want to look up later. And then ah, maybe some good places to eat? Oh! Is there a bakery around here?"

Toki just smiled softly at the idea of having at least a little bit of ownership over the town "Ah, if I do, I'd gladly let someone else have it. Not that I don't appreciate the thought, of course...there's just a lot I want to experience before I'm ready to feel ready for the kind of responsibility it takes to look over a place like this. Still...it means a lot to hear that my work seems appreciated. Thank you."
He frowned slightly at Roger's words as he shook his head "There's nothing wrong in feeling happy over things that seem so small. Flowers might seem fragile and fleeting, but their endurance is just as beautiful as their appearance. They start as unassuming seeds, then grow and blossom with proper care and nourishment...sometimes even without that. I like to imagine flowers being like people. No matter the situation, there are those who will grow to become something truly special and show the world how amazing they are. Or maybe it's just nice to appreciate pretty things." he said with a little laugh over his own philosophical ramblings.
Toki nodded as he listened to Hiroyo about the general feel of Rosewood compared to a larger city like Whitewater "It's definitely a different experience. People don't really feel as busy as they are in the larger cities. Well, now's different considering what's going on, but even still there's a sense of community here. Whitewater and Terminus have their communities too, don't get me wrong...it's just everyone knows everyone here. They've all got each other's backs."
He wondered where he could show her "Well there's a schoolhouse not far from here. Should be some books there for whatever you want to look up. Come on, I'll take you there." he said as he walked towards the door. Once Hiroyo and the others were ready, he'd open the door for them and lead them down the street and turned a corner after a couple of minutes. Soon, there it was, the schoolhouse. At this time of day it wasn't very busy, but the doors were open to all "Here we are. Should be plenty of books inside." he said as he entered the building. It was a cozy little building, perfect for teaching and comfortable enough for the students "Take as much time as you need."

It seemed like Toki wasn't the type to hold Roger's words against her and Hiroyo breathed a little sigh of relief. Relief that quickly turned to pondering as Toki laid out how he thought plants and people were similiar. It was a nice thought, although now Hiroyo couldn't stop wondering what kind of flower she was. Something with petals? She really didn't know much about plants!
"Oh, a school? Uhm, I'm not sure if that'll have what I'm looking for but it sounds like its worth a shot!" She said while tapping her chin thoughtfully. If it was meant for the digimon that had just come from the Village of Beginnings then how advanced would its books on the topic be?
'Almost certainly more advanced than I know.' She thought with a sigh. Her shoulders slumped a little as they walked but she straightened up again as they reached the building. She looked up at it curiously then glanced back at Toki. "When would be the best time to visit? This late I'm sure they're closing soon but it seems like it'd be rude to just wander the halls during the day and distracting the classes."
"If you even think about forcing me into a library now I will scream." Roger threatened, his face still pointed toward the ground.
With a grin Hiroyo reached up to pat his back soothingly. "Hey hey, I said I wasn't planning to! Besides when we do go you should know that libraries are excellent places for naps! They're very quiet."
"Restful days after recent events would be welcome." Morgan said as he looked at Hiroyo strangely. She smiled sweetly back at him. The showdown ended with a decisive flick of his antenna as he turned his head to Toki. "May we impose on you a bit longer? We should extend our diets beyond dango and cart-noodles."
"But cart noodles are good!"
"Bah, I could eat dango for the rest of my life and not get sick of it!"

For a moment he thought about when would be the best time "Probably sometime in the mid-afternoon when classes are wrapping up. Teachers tend to stay a little while after the students go home. Though it seems your friends would rather spend a little bit more time relaxing from the sounds of it." he said with a smile at the two.
"I spent a lot of my time in school at libraries. Granted I was kind of a loner back then and didn't really know what else to do with my time before going back home. As much as I wish I did things differently back then, it gave me plenty of knowledge to work with and might have inspired my love of writing."
He looked down at Morgan, curious as to what events they've had to deal with themselves, but offered a friendly nod at his question "Of course! I'm not really doing anything for the moment. It really depends on what kind of food you want, since I'm not really picky. I met someone who showed me a great grill that recently opened up if you like burgers, steaks, fries, that sort of thing. But if not I'm sure there's plenty of places here we could try out!" he said optimistically.
"Dango is indeed an amazing treat. Nothing beats that and a good warm cup of tea. You know when I talk like that I seem very old fashioned for my age." he said with a blush "Either way this time I'll follow your lead, wherever you all want to go. The grill is just down the road and to the left if I remember correctly."
Toki seemed to be the sort that didn't let too many things get him down. He was optimistic, friendly, and accommodating to others around him, something that he prided himself on. While he may have been through a lot, he uses that experience to help others "Lots of things have been happening lately, huh? I know my friends have been through so much these past few weeks and Rosewood's quick recovery just brings a smile to my face."

A mental note was stored away and Hiroyo turned her attention more fully back to the rest of the conversation. She perked up at the mention of writing. Her thoughts immediately jumped to calligraphy. "Ah! I'm good at writing! Well, at the act of writing, I'm not really great at coming up with words to make look good thou-"
"Pfft! Who cares about words! I want steak!" Roger cut in with a mighty snap of his beak. Hiroyo rolled her eyes at the interruption.
"Rude! How about it, Morgan?" She flicked Roger firmly in the side while looking to her other partner for his opinion. She grinned at the nod she received and wiggled her hand in a little gesture in front of her. "Looks like burgers and steaks it is!"
Hiroyo paused for a moment as Toki talked about dango and tea then held a hand up to her mouth to partially cover a grin. "I'll say! Should I be offering you my arm, grandfather?" She asked with a wink as she held her arm out toward him with a wink. Roger groaned at the joke and flopped dramatically over, a good third of his body length hanging off her other side and waving with each step she took. It didn't seem to bother his balance at all.
"You tease, Hiroyo, but it is good to enjoy the simple pleasures at times In these uncertain times there is meaning in the most fleeting of pleasures." Morgan said. He flew to the front of the group, flipping around so that he was facing the group while flying in the direction they were going. His eyes were focused on Toki and he quietly ground his beak as if the words were difficult to say before finally he spat the words out.
"Have the other Demon Lords been sighted then?" He spoke quietly so hsi voice would not carry too far from the little group.
Hiroyo dropped the arm she had offered Toki and glared at Morgan, her playful expression disappearing into a frown. She knew where this conversation was probably headed and she Did Not Approve.

He laughed heartily at Roger's eagerness to get some food "Okay okay we can talk when we get to the grill. Easy now, friend." he said as they continued walking "Should be a good meal." He was looking forward to having those fries again and there was a noticeable spring to his step. "You should read some human poetry sometimes, Roger. Even when they seem simple, there's a lot of meaning to get from them."
He paused and blushed deeply at Hiroyo's teasing "Aw come on, I was just saying that as a joke! Don't tease me about that, I'm only twenty...!" he whined. Still, he knew it was just friendly banter so he wasn't really offended at all. "Man, at this rate I'll be acting like a grandmaster from a martial arts movie before I'm thirty..." he said with an exaggerated sigh.
Morgan flew ahead of them and then looked at Toki before asking a question that they seemed like they had trouble asking. His smile faded slightly when he saw Hiroyo's reaction to the question "This doesn't seem to be a topic that Hiroyo wants to go into...but...it is important. Yes. They've been sighted. I was actually called to Luminas alongside some others to mediate in diplomatic talks with who...we thought was supposed to be an envoy of the Demon Lords, but now I have my doubts about their intentions. They seemed to want to ask our advice and have us give alternatives to the Demon Lords' rule. However, after a while it was clear they never intended on accepting our alternatives and were trying to sway us to their side. When it was clear we wouldn't play along, the envoy attacked us. Before that, however, some of the Demon Lords themselves spoke to us through portals the envoy, GranDracmon, opened. Out of them, Lucemon and Beelzemon were actually...very agreeable and honestly rather friendly. Leviamon and Belphemon were a little more apathetic and hostile, while...Daemon..." he clenched his fists, clearly angry "Daemon was fighting my friends. I don't know how that battle resolved. But...my encounter there taught me one thing...that the Demon Lords, at least some of them, can be reasoned with. Lucemon and I even agreed on some things, and Beelzemon was rowdy, but respectful of other peoples' property. I believe that the Demon Lords can be good people...but something is preventing them from being so. They need people that understand them. Or people that can guide them. Maybe even people that can get them to relinquish the data that's turned them into the Demon Lords...if that's even possible at this point. The point is...they deserve a chance to do good things. They're not beings of pure malice like some would lead you to believe. They're...people."

"Wait, twenty? Heck you're my age!" Hiroyo crowed as she walked with a bounce in her step.
"That really makes the difference in maturity so weird!" Roger retorted with a cackle as Hiroyo stumbled and her face turned red. She was still grinning right up until the conversation turned to the demon lords and she pressed her lips together in a tight smile.
To the trio's credit they listened quietly throughout Toki's story, although this was helped along by Hiroyo's hand resting on Roger's beak near the beginning. Morgan looked troubled at first and then more thoughtful as the story continued. Roger snorted, more than once, and was grinding his beak toward the end. Hiroyo though...
Hiroyo was looking at Toki with a look of pleased wonder. Like she'd overheard someone praising her efforts at work or picked up something she dropped on her way home only to have the store keeper replace it for free when they heard the story.
For a moment things were quiet after the story. Then they all started to talk at once, each trying to press their version of the situations out.
"I agree! I mean I know they're not human but-"
"Wait, you met TWO of them and some scrubs were already fighting Daemon? I wa-"
"I find your story hard to belive but there were some anomalies while fighting-"
They stopped, more or less at the same time and looked at each other for a moment with two of them opening their mouths at the same time before shutting them again.
At least Morgan and Hiroyo shut their mouths when they saw others were ready to talk. Roger took the opportunity to lay out his side of things.
"We fought Lilithmon way before anyone was aware the Demon Lords were back. That witch tricked us into finding some weird desire flowers for her but we held her off long enough to burn the field then bounced out of there! She and her weird-egg-thing were pure evil!"
Hiroyo opened her mouth to retort then firmly shut her mouth and gestured to Morgan to speak. He looked at her curiously for a moment then nodded and opened his beak.
"There's more to it than that, although we did have an altercation with the Demon Lord of Lust. There were more involved for one thing, another tamer and a general who hadn't built her army yet. We met the host who are trying to coordinate against the Demon Lords, Rasielmon and the rest." Morgan stated grimly. Seraphimon had been eager to run off and fight when he heard the Demon Lords were reappearing in the world, had he led an early charge against Daemon?
"We were there when Lilithmon's symbol faded from their map of the world and three more formed on it." He could remember those symbols and their positions clearly. All he had were guesses as to which belonged to which lord. "An eye over Terminus. A cloud of mist over the Digital Sea. A broken alarm clock in the Northern Prominence. Sound familiar?"
Despite waiting for Toki's response it was obvious Hiroyo was bursting with the desire to give her own view on things. Something sparkled in her eyes, or maybe it was the set of her jaw or the way her head was tilted.
