Have you ever felt like being lost forever? Like if everything you knew wasn't true anymore. That is how I felt waking up. I was lost, scared maybe. When I managed to open my eyes, there was an orange sky in front of me. I could feel and hear the wind dancing around the grass. Some people would have stood up and look around. I didn't. I just laid down on the ground with my eyes fixated to that sky and trying to not move at all. It didn't felt like I was somewhere I knew. I know that it wasn't home. It didn't feel like home. But yet, I didn't feel like I was lost neither. I've been here before, I was sure of that. Even if I only could see the cloudless sky, the feeling of my body laying on the grass was familiar.
"Desmond?" I heard someone calling my name. I heard this voice before but I couldn't tell where I heard it. I slowly turned my head to see where that little voice came from and saw something strange. A little fireball with a face and two tiny arms. Part of me wanted to stand up and run. But the rest of me didn't want to panic or move. What was that and how come he knew my name? "Desmond!" It was that thing that called my name. I wanted to say something, shout even but again, I just couldn't move nor say anything. I could see him smiling at me broadly. Whatever it was, he didn't want to harm me, that I was sure of. I tried to open my mouth to ask what he was exactly. "Ug."
The fireball stopped smiling for a moment and tilted his head on one side. "Desmond, are you okay?" He asked with concern in his voice. "I..." I wasn't sure what to say. I tried to move my fingers to make sure that I wasn't paralyzed. My little fingers slowly formed a fist. Good, I could move. "I..." The strange creature went forward and poke my nose. I wanted to move my head away from the fire that was his hand but I didn't. I felt the heat but it didn't burn me. "Desmond?" He said my name again like he knew me. "I... Fine?" The fireball looked at me for a moment and then smiled once more. "Yay!" He shouted in joy it seems.
It was then that I slowly moved my sore body into a sitting position and look around me. I was close to the edge of a cliff and could see the ocean on the horizon. I knew that I wasn't home now. I stood silent, slowly moving my head from left to right to take a proper look at where I was exactly. Grass, cliff, water. That was all. "Desmond?" Again, how come he knew my name? "Erm... Huh?" The strange creature went closer and pointed to the water. The sun, it was settling down. The array of colors painted a nice picture, a very nice one. "Can we go watch it?" I looked at him. His voice was gentle and his smile made me feel at ease. "Who are you?"
Tilting his head once more, he pointed to himself. "I'm Demi, Demi Edmund!" Edmund, that is my last name. "No, you're not..." He laughed at me. "Yes! I'm Demi!" Him saying my last name was strange. "What are you?" Demi was still laughing. "I'm a Digimon!" Digimon, what a strange word. "I'm your partner!" It didn't make any sense and yet, a part of my brain told me that he was saying the truth. That part was telling me to listen to this Digimon. "Where are we?" Upon asking that, the fireball named Demi just smiled at me. "In the Digiworld!" A word that made little sense to me but I wasn't going to question that.
"Can we go see the sun go down?" He pointed to the very edge of the cliff. I didn't say anything, I just looked at him pointing with that smile on his face. "Please?" I nodded after a short moment of silence. "Yay!" And it floated to the edge and turned around. "Come!" He shouted with that same happiness in his voice. I managed to stand after a while. My legs were a bit numb for a second or two. Luckily, I only need to make a few steps before sitting down with next to Demi with my legs dangling into the empty. It was a nice sunset. Looking at all the colors gave me the impression that I have been here before. It wasn't my first time nor my second time, that I was sure. Demi began humming some kind of melody that I heard before. I just turned my head to look at him and he did the same, looking at me.
"Desmond?" He stopped humming after only a few seconds to say my name. "Yeah?" I wasn't sure why I was not scared. "Are you okay?" I wanted to say no but my head just nodded. We shared a moment of silence looking at each other. I think that I was expressionless at that moment. Demi didn't seem convinced. "I'm... Fine." I saw a bit of sadness in his face. "I mean... I feel fine?" Demi looked down and didn't say anything for a second. "I'm fine, Demi." Upon hearing his name, the Digimon quickly looked up at me and he smiled. "Yay!" And then, I too smiled. His joy was contagious, even if I didn't know exactly who he was. The little fireball then inched closer to me and rest his head on me. I didn't move at first. Again, it didn't burn me, I only felt the warmth. I placed my hand on him and I heard him giggle. It was a nice feeling having my hand on his head.
After that, we just stayed silent looking at the sun going down. The more I looked at it, the more I felt like I belonged here. I wasn't here by mistake, I came here, with Demi. How? I still had no idea. As the sun disappeared on the horizon, I wanted to take a picture of that with my cellphone. I reached out to grab but I found something each in that pocket. It was a small... Green something. I held it in my hand for a moment unsure of why I had it in the first place. It didn't look familiar at all. I began studying it, pressing the buttons randomly with my thumb but nothing happened. I still tried for a bit longer before giving up. Maybe it was broken. I then turned it around to look at the back of it. There was a sun with a smile drawn on it. Was it, Demi? My jaw dropped a bit as I just stood still looking at the small device.
I would hold that thing in my hand for a bit longer before placing it back into my pocket. I went digging into my other pockets, careful to not move too much. I wasn't sure if Demi was sleeping now but he didn't move for a long while now. I found my cellphone and pressed on the button on the side and saw a picture. It was me with Demi and a girl with brown hair and also another strange creature that looked like a bird maybe? While I had no idea of who was that bird-like creature, I could clearly remember who that girl is. It was Sam, the girl I loved. But why I couldn't remember who Demi was then? Clearly, all three of them were dear enough to me for me to save that picture.
I spent the next minutes browsing my phone for more pictures. They were there, all of them. Did I just forget about them? And if so, why just these two? I could see clearly in my mind me holding hands with Sam, looking at the night sky. But somehow, Demi wasn't there. It was just the girl and me. I sighed, everything made me question, well, everything. After a short moment, I closed the phone and gently placed it back into where I found it.
I don't know how many hours I spent looking in front of me. The sun was now down and the full moon took its place. There were many bright stars too. Again, I felt that I have seen that sky before. It was clear to me that I wasn't a stranger to this Digiworld. I came here somehow willingly. For some reason, I wasn't tired at all of not moving much. My right hand resting on Demi made me feel like I was there to protect him. I took a deep breath and looked up and wonder why I couldn't remember anything about this world. It was then that I felt a strong breeze of air dancing around me and it seemed to have wakened up Demi. "Mmmm..." The fireball began moving and yawning at the same time.
"Demi?" This time, It was me that called his name. The Digimon rolled on himself and looked at me with those big blue eyes. "Desmond!" He shouted with that same happy voice. His attention swiftly switched to the stars above. "Oooooh!" He began pointing at them while poking my leg. "Look! Look!" I simply looked at him for a second before looking up as well. "They are so pretty!" I smiled and nodded. "They are." Having the Digimon by my side while stargazing really felt like deja vu. We did this before, maybe more than once. "Look! Look!" He shouted once more. "The moon! It's huge!" This time I couldn't help but laugh a bit. "Yes, Demi. It is pretty big." The little fireball has that genuine wonder in his eyes and honestly, it was contagious.
"Do you think that we will see a shooting star?" Demi would ask after a few minutes of him pointing at every star he could see. "I'm not sure, they are pretty rare." I said hoping that he wouldn't be saddened by what I said. The Digimon turned his head around to see me and nodded. There was something endearing in his expression that made me smile back at him. "Do you have a wish?" I asked while I had his attention. He began nodding up and down rapidly. "Yes!" He shouted out loud. "What would you wish for?" Demi giggled before speaking. "Food!" That wish coming from his mouth sounded very familiar. "Why food?"
"So we can all eat together again!" I tilted my head and tried to figure who was referring to. "All of us?" The fireball nodded again. "You, me, Sam and Hawk!" I was about to ask him who Hawk was but the picture on my phone came to mind. The other Digimon, it must be Hawk. I stood silent for a moment not knowing what to say. Demi also stayed silent maybe waiting for me to say something. "What would you wish for?" He repeated my question but however, unlike him, I wasn't sure what to wish for. "I... Erm..." My eyes looked away for a few seconds. "Erm..." What could I wish for? I wanted to say something silly but maybe I should try harder and find the one thing I wanted to happen. "I think that..."
"Do you want to stay by my side?" That phrase surprised me. It sounded like I did say that before. That whole discussion, we had that one before. Demi was all smile when he asked me that question. "With me, Sam and Hawk!" I didn't know what to do. I just froze and look at the Digimon awkwardly. Luckly, Demi didn't seem to have noticed that awkward stare of mine. "I..." And he inched closer and pressing his head on my leg. "I do... Yes... I do wish for that."
Have you ever felt like being lost forever? I did. But now, I feel that everything is going to be alright. I might not remember much but I know this single truth. I was where I belong. With Demi, Sam and Hawk by my side. It was time for me to go home now. I still have a lot to figure out. I don't feel like I'm lost anymore. I might not be the one I was before but for now, I know exactly where I am supposed to be.
Here.
