A Long Due Visit [Amelie]

Black Rose: You want to meet up?
Black Rose: Honestly, my schedule's a bit tight as of late... oh!
Black Rose: If you want to come along with me on my next patrol, we can meet up there! Honestly, Syre felt a little bad when she saw her auntie's message come up from out of the blue. So much had come up, with moving to Snowpoint and everything else, that Syre just lost track of things. Well, no, maybe that wasn't quite right. Was she drowning herself in work to try and distract herself from everything else? Or was she just hesitant to meet with someone to try and talk things out? After all, things almost went very bad with Mae...
Ugh, damn it kitty, focus.
Syre shook her head, slapping her paws against her cheeks, trying to shake herself out of whatever funk she'd gotten herself into. She found herself at the edge of the Server Woods, at the fringe of the Eastern Timberlands - and her job today, like several times before, was to make sure the critical areas of the forest were safe enough for the surrounding areas. Heck, with taking someone else along, she even made a list for Amelie to follow along with!
Were it just her work, this would have been a likely-boring but definitely-typical day. But with Amelie tagging along?
Syre was way more nervous than she should have been.

Well, that had been fairly easy! Considering the eventual conversation that'd follow, at least beginning with the correct foot was a relief. Would Syre be aware of the reasons Amelie had messaged her? She was a smart digimon, so it wouldn't really surprise her. However... she could take care of that later.
The sound of the brunette's car approaching the meeting location would probably be obvious to Syre. By now, she was probably quite familiar with it. Just like with the human that proceeded to descend from it to greet the Tailmon.
"Hey, niece!" She said effusively. "Long time no see! How have you been? Hope it's fine for me to join you this afternoon!"
At least outwardly, the young woman seemed to be in high spirits. Inwardly? Kinda, as well. It's been a long time since the last time the two had seen each other, and to say Amelie enjoyed her so-called niece's company was probably a pretty big understatement on itself. Who knows, even despite the not-so-exciting circumstances around them, maybe the two would find a way to enjoy themselves.
That'd be nice.

Hearing the sound of the car pull up, Syre's ear gave a flick, a smile growing on her face as she turned to that direction. Nervous as she might have been, it had been a while since she'd seen Amelie proper - and heck, she was glad to see her!
As the car pulled to a stop, Syre came up to the side of the vehicle, nodding right back towards the driver. "Hey, Auntie!" She chuckled, ear flicking at the positive energy Amelie put into her words. "I've been doing... well, alright enough. Been getting a bit more into the Knight work, but yeah, its fine for me to have you along."
Syre looked over her shoulder towards the woods. "Though it does feel a bit weird to drag you along for something like this... but I guess its not the first time? If nothing else, you might be able to get a decent article or two out of it." Was Amelie still doing journalism? Heck, maybe talking about that would be a nice way to lighten up the mood!
... That would be nice. But there was definitely a lot on Syre's mind. She took a low breath out, leveling herself out. "As for what we're doing here... well, part of its just to make it known that the Knights are keeping watch over the place, but there is something we're looking for in particular." The cat would reach to a bag at her side, and pull out a picture for Amelie's reference.
That of a black, fibrous mushroom, photographed in the Eastern Timberlands.
"Nocturne Whitecap - apparently it glows in the dark or the shade, but more importantly, its not native here. Someone planted it to try and sell it for money and then it spread out a bit when it got out of control. Its a 'bit' toxic to virus types and extremely dangerous to insect types, so we need to make sure that its not on our path - if you see leaves turning purple or red or brownish grass, that usually means there's a strain of it growing nearby. Other than that..."
The cat would offer the picture to Amelie for reference. "... This amounts to a 'good walk spoiled', really. Just keep your eyes open for wild Digimon and we should be fine out here - we'll have lots of time to talk!"

At least thus far, Syre seemed to be doing well enough! While Amelie didn't exactly know what would be her role in this small meeting, at least she was positive on her presence being a good thing for the Gatomon, overall. Hopefully, it'd remain that way for the duration of their small outing!
"Just fine to have me along, huh?" A fake pout belied the brunette's true disposition. "Back when you were small, you literally hopped with excitement when we were about to hang out! And now I'm... 'just fine'. Kids growing can be so harsh at times."
Of course, those were just theatrics to tease on her niece. "Knight work sounds like fun, though! It seems that you've been taking your responsibilities very seriously. That makes me feel very proud, you know?" It didn't come as a surprise that she just waved dismissively at the words that followed. "None of that. I'm happy that I can accompany you in your knightly duties! I wish my boyfriend let me do that, but he's a bit of a stick in the mud regarding the topic. Not fun at all, if you ask me! Potentially getting an article out of it sounds fun as well, so it's not like really this is a burden. We'll have fun!"
With that out of the way, the girl listened attentively to what Syre had to say about the task at hand; at least at a glance, it seemed easy enough! That was good. She proceeded to take the picture. "What do we do to the shrooms once we find them, though? I guess that we gotta prevent them to keep on spreading, but are we using any specific method or anything?"
That was the only 'important' question she had for now. Other than that, they could already begin to be on their merry way! "Tell me how the knights have been! It's been a while since I've seen any of them. How's everyone?"

Sheesh, wasn't that a heavy lead! Though she could tell Amy was kidding, Syre couldn't help but give a nervous chuckle. "Eheh... don't take it that way, auntie... I was just saying it'd be alright that I have you around for a work shift!"
But yes, it was fun to have her around! Letting Amelie wave that 'weird feeling' off, it didn't take long for Syre to explain the primary reason that they were here. But not before Syre's ear flicked at an interesting point. 'Boyfriend'? The flick of the ear was met with a knowing smirk, one that would let Amelie know that the BlackGatomon was going to ask her all about that little detail.
Later, though - they had glorified mushroom hunting to do! "Oh, right, good question. Here..." Syre would hand a spare bag to Amelie - a small, tough burlap sack, really, one that could be worn or tossed over the shoulder. "I'll be dropping them off later to get their strain tested, or... something like that, I'm not big on the science details. They did tell me not to try attacking them directly because it would cast the spores everywhere, but they are safe enough to pick. Dig em up by the root if we find any."
Simple enough! Syre would lead the way off into the woods, slipping onto all fours as they started what would hopefully be a long, uneventful walk. How were the Knights? Honestly, that question alone was enough to make the cat give a sigh out, shaking her head. "Overall, we're just trying to keep along with these patrols and all. Unfortunately its been a bit disorganized since..." She paused, glancing over her shoulder.
"... Well. Have you heard about it?"

Maybe she had gone a tad too far with her teasing? Maybe! But Syre's reaction had been fun to observe, so it had been worthwhile! After a shrug, Amelie replied. "Oh, in that case... I guess it's fine! Let's go." For sure, the irony of that response hadn't been lost to the brunette; in a sense, it was what made the whole exchange entertaining. An aunt had to have fun at times as well, after all.
A smirk followed suit; she had caught the cat's interest, hadn't she? While, admittedly, it was a bit weird that Syre didn't ask about it right away. Quite professional! It seemed like she had her mind focused on the task at hand. Impressive! if that was the case, then might as well; she took the sack as they began their journey, all while listening to the explicit prohibition regarding attacking the mushrooms. Spores could cause a lot of issues and would defeat the purpose of trying to curb an invasive species. That made sense.
Easy enough, honestly! It was time to collect those bad boys, and hopefully, find a way to reduce their population. Had the brunette's question been too much? It seemed that it was enough to be telling of something not being quite right. Probably not the best way to breach that topic, but that could be done. Amelie grimaced for a second as the moment of truth came and braced herself for her eventual response.
"Yeah... Holly told me about it, all while I found that she... was a thing, I guess. Didn't guess that I'd get to know your sister that way." She crouched to be at eye level with the Tailmon, immediately going through the motions to scoop her up within her arms. "We don't have to talk about it if you don't want, though. It wasn't my intention to bring it..."

Yeah, that was perhaps not how Amelie intended to start the conservation, but in retrospect it was easy to forget that K was leader of the Knights! As her aunt crouched down to her level, Syre came to a stop, giving a blink before she was promptly scooped up.
And Syre wrapped her arms right around Amelie's shoulders, as best as she could.
"... No... no, its fine, Amy." Syre's voice seemed calm, even relatively composed, as she caught her breath around that lump in her throat. "Honestly, I should have been talking to you about this a little sooner. And I'll admit," the cat pulled back, letting herself be put down, "its been a bit rough for me. We had a week, but even that didn't really feel like enough time. Not like any amount would have been enough."
She bit her lip. There weren't tears, but it was clear that Syre was definitely still sad about it. The cat took a moment to sit back against a tree, resting her hands on her knees as she mulled it over. "Things have been sort of a rush since then. Re-organizing the Knights, finishing the move out to Snowpoint, keeping up with the Guild... and I've been trying to keep myself together, best as I can. Can't say I've had the best of it throughout - I almost took Mae's head off once when I snapped," the cat shook her head at that.
"Did you know mom all that well?" Syre asked, that thought coming to mind. "I mean, at first, it was just you, the club, me, and dad. I... honestly don't know if you've even met her."

Amelie hugged Syre. It was probably too late to provide comfort in a situation like this one, but... that wouldn't deter her from trying. She knew that, despite the Gatomon's otherwise composed demeanor, she was hurting, and it didn't take long for her own words to confirm those suspicions, Nothing less was expected, considering the situation at hand.
The brunette proceeded to place the feline on the ground again, all while listening attentively to her thoughts regarding K's untimely demise, and how it had been her fault that she had been silent for so long. To that, she shook her head; "It's fine, don't worry. I wish I could have been there for you when that happened, but... that's how things are, I guess. I'd still like to."
It was a complex situation, but if it meant helping Syre bounce back from it, Amy would help with it as much as she could. For now, however, it was probably better for her to stick to the current events. Everything would fall to place in due. At least that was what the brunette hoped. She couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at the mention of what might've happened to Mae, even if she refrained from commenting. And then... the question was uttered. How much did she know K?
"Well..." She began, both her tone and her expression were a bit awkward, even though that was kinda expected, considering the person they were talking about. "I consider her a dear friend of mine, even if we grew estranged over time. We met back when she couldn't even evolve past rookie, you know?" It was surprising how noteworthy, yet brief the Renamon's life had been. "She told me about the Knights before you got to be an egg, and we shared some very good moments. That's the brief version of it, unless you want any details?"
The whole deal about K felt like treacherous terrain. How much could she talk about her? Should she talk about her? This felt really awkward.

"Auntie... Amy, you've always been there for me. There's nothing you need to apologize for."
Syre gave a smile, despite everything else, genuinely glad to be spending time with her aunt - even if it meant having this talk. There was definitely a lot to air out, and as the cat would soon hear, it wouldn't just be her own grief. Her ear flicked, hearing just how early that Amelie knew her mom.
"Heh... she really got to know a lot of people, didn't she?" Syre shook her head, rubbing the back of her eyes against her glove as she kept a smile on her face. "I mean, its enough for me to know that she was your friend, Amy. I'm glad that you two had each-other's backs, and... hm?"
As they walked, the cat blinked, swearing under her breath. Red grass, a purple tinge of the leaves - she pulled a branch up, revealing two black mushrooms. With an annoyed sigh, the cat dug her claws into the dirt, revealing a stark white base, plucking both right into her bag. "Didn't think we'd find any this far out." The cat's attention briefly turned to the surrounding area, wanting to at least be thorough, and not just assume that these were two stragglers.
"... Anyway, thank you, Amy. I mean, considering everything, you're about as dear to me as Mom and Dad are. I just... don't know how I want to handle everything right now."
"And that's fine, right?"

All in all, it seemed like this exchange had been... positive? If it could be called that way; the last thing Amelie wanted was to cause Syre even more grief if she could help it. This was a step in the right direction, even if the brunette firmly felt like it was in the category of breaking some eggs to make an omelet. It didn't very correct, but... there wasn't a lot that could be done about it.
Better to not think about it all that much, honestly. Instead, a faint smile took over her features as she reminisced on her friendship with K. She truly had traveled around the world quite a bit, hadn't she? "I wish I could have done more about her, but it's too late to have regrets, I think."
Their conversation had been promptly interrupted by the appearance of a pair of mushrooms. They looked like they had expanded rather quickly, hadn't they? This could be a problem... "It seems like we'll have to scour as much of the forest as we can."
Would their bags even be enough? Hopefully, especially when considering that the brunette had managed to catch a glance of another pair of mushrooms. Luckily, digging them out to store them wasn't very hard. Only when she was done, she would turn and beam to the Tailmon. Those words meant a lot.
"There's no need to thank me, Syre. You're almost like a daughter to me, you know? I'd be glad to help you in any way I can..." After saying those words, a quick nod was followed by a pat on her back. "Being unsure is completely fine. There isn't a tried-and-true way of dealing with events like that. And I wouldn't believe anyone who claimed there was, anyway."
She wished to come with more comforting words, but the truth was that grieving the loss of a loved one was something highly personal. Amy trusted that Syre would eventually be able to bear with it. She was a strong girl, after all.

It didn't take long for Amelie to find a second pair of mushrooms - and Syre, just by flicking her eyes off to the left, spotted a third next to a rotted log. At this point, the BlackGatomon bit her lip to consider the situation at hand. They would have to scour as much of the forest as they could?
"It's a pretty big forest, Auntie." Syre returned a nervous chuckle, standing up as she gave a small sigh. "I guess its what happens when you introduce a 'rare' mushroom to a place where it can actually thrive and grow. Dad looked into a few things on 'invasive species' from your side, and he says its playing out here about the same."
Ugh, but what were they going to do about it? "We'll just have to do what we can, for now. Maybe we can work with Rosewood to get an awareness campaign going in the next few days?" That might be a better way to solve it.
But for now, the two would at least find themselves occupied as they talked.
"Heh, well, thank you anyway!" She chuckled, giving a smile as that hand slipped against her back. The cat returned a brief nuzzle against her auntie's wrist. "And yeah... all I can really ask for is someone I can just call and talk to about it. And she was important to you, right? I'll keep an ear open."
It was about all they could do - just two pals riding down this crazy log raft called life. Tossing about the sixth mushroom into her bag, Syre shook her head. "Ugh... the spores of these things slip under the 'armor' of bug Digimon and take root in them. Dad didn't think they'd slip out this far... I wonder if the infected bugs are dragging them around?"
Syre paused, in that line of thought.
"... In which case we should probably be ready to run into a crazed bug or two..."

It seemed like Syre hadn't predicted the mushrooms to have spread as much as they had. Was she nervous about the task they had to perform now? That was... interesting. "I'm aware. Chances are that we'll run out of space on our bags before we can fully clean the forest. But that shouldn't stop us from trying right? I feel like eradicating the Whitecap population is gonna take a more concerted effort than two girls plucking them out as they find it, however. Seems like we're in the face of a pretty big epidemic, aren't we?"
This was concerning, and probably would take a lot more resources to properly solve. Would Syre alert the knights' headquarters after this little outing was done? I didn't help that Amy was kind of asking herself if the knights had a proper power structure after K's demise. Ultimately, her offer of working in conjunction with Rosewood seemed like the smarter one. "That'd work as well. Guess that reporting this outbreak to both Terminus and Rosewood would be in order, especially since this is something that matters to both cities. Let's hope they take it seriously, though."
All in all, the situation seemed to be a lot less tense now. Syre had calmed down a fair bit, and Amy herself was in a decent mood. It frankly wasn't time to get solemn about this, considering that probably that wasn't what K wanted for them to feel, right? She had always been so bright...
A decisive nod was given right afterward; she had no qualms on listening to everything Syre had to say, if it ever came to it. Until then... it seemed they would have to deal with the repercussions this mushroom was causing. "Hope there aren't a lot of infected individuals. I'd rather not run into crazed bugs, but... what do we do in that case? Do we run away from them, or try to incapacitate them? Is there any way we can extract the spores from their bodies and get them back to their senses? That'd be useful to know."
With any luck, that wouldn't happen, but it was better to be prepared for the worst, just in case.

If nothing else, Amelie was being optimistic about the whole thing! This did go off-track from a simple patrol of the forest, but honestly, the cat didn't see anything wrong with Amelie's logic. "Well, if we manage to fill our bags just with the area around here, it'll at least demonstrate how bad its gotten. It might at least kick one of the cities to act on this a bit faster."
With Wisemon and the Demon Lords having taken the world's attention, Syre wasn't entirely surprised that a problem like this managed to crop up in the meantime - and, as per usual, it didn't really get anyone's attention until it was near a crisis. The Knights might have been capable, but they were only a unit of ten or so people, and that alone wasn't going to be enough to solve the problem. "I don't think it'll be hard to convince Rosewood to act..." Circling around a tree, finding no hints of the fungus, Syre moved a bit further down the trail. "Terminus might be a good idea. I'd say its 50-50, but it should be fine if we frame it right."
Yes, it was a lot less tense. Syre and Amy were thinking practically about the situation at hand - and depressing as it was to say, it helped Syre to do so. Her ear flicked as Amy brought up a question - what would they do in the case of a 'crazed bug'? "Well, I guess it would depend how far gone they are. As far as dad explained it, they sort of act like 'husks' or 'zombies', just acting on instinct - oh, hell."
Syre's casual swear slipped out as they turned a corner down the path. They didn't find a 'monster', per se, but they found hints of one: jagged slashes run through a few trees, kicked up mud and broken branches as if something had torn off into the distance. The only thing that wasn't clear was how old these marks were, as Syre carefully examined one of the notches.
"Hm... Amy, your Digivice have anything on a bug Digimon that uses sickles or blades, or whatnot? This looks like too 'smooth' of a cut for a claw..." She stepped back, gritting her teeth - her form soon wrapped with light, the cat soon replaced with a Sistermon.
Seemed like she didn't want to take any chances.

A nod was given in response to Syre's statement. That made sense; if they filled their sacks fast enough, the threat these mushrooms posed couldn't be underestimated by any major city. And if they didn't respect it? Chances are that most insect digimon would leave the cities due to the danger an epidemic posed. Nobody wanted to be afflicted with that thing; that much was for sure.
"We don't lose anything by trying to convince as many people as we can to help. Terminus has a lot more resources than Rosewood, so having its help would accelerate the solution to this issue by a fair bit. Worth a try, right?"
Zombugs, huh? That sounded terrifying on its own right, even if it was probably something that the duo could easily handle, considering the average level of the inhabitants of this forest. If somehow, a higher level digimon got infected? Well... then that'd make matters a lot dicier.
Speaking of which... sickles or blades, huh? She had seen one of those firsthand. "Yeah. That should be a Snimon; a giant religious mantis with actual scythes as forelimbs. Lemme show you."
Said and done, the girl browsed in her digivice until the appropriate hologram showed. Was this the digimon they were looked for? It kinda looked like it, but chances of her being mistaken weren't zero.
Once Syre evolved to Sistermon, the human gazed at her, a curious expression evident on her face. "Think I should evolve as well? I trust my ability to do it on a pinch, but I guess we can never be too sure. Communication would be kind of a pain, though..."

"Sure, worth a try!"
Really, there was no harm in asking. The worst they could do was say no - and given the evidence, it wasn't even likely that they would do that. Unfortunately, the topic couldn't stay on the hypothetical. It didn't take long, after all, for the cat to find evidence of one of those bugs nearby. "Snimon, huh?"
Though she was a Digimon, Syre hadn't been one for very long, so there were a lot of species that she wasn't familiar with. Taking her form as a Sistermon, she looked over the hologram, blinking as she saw the size of those scythes. Coupled with Amelie asking if she should match her form, Syre bit her lip, avoiding giving a simply reflexive answer.
"... The lack of communication would be a problem." The Sistermon sighed, shaking her head. "The only reason I took this form was to make a big enough data signal where we'd be too 'scary' to approach. Though, if you feel like anything is about to happen, I'd evolve before it does."
As for now? Syre looked down that damaged path, seeing that a number of smaller mushrooms had already begun to bud at the base of the trees around them. Kneeling down, they could see the white spores, freshly landed like dandelion flakes, ready to root up in the wet bark. Scraping up as much as she could, Syre carefully led the way down, those frantic cuts visible in the trees around them for several yards.
It didn't take them long to find the source. Just as they would round the last tree, the pair would see it: the hulking, green bug Digimon, panting for breath, hunched over and resting his weight on his blades. Syre instinctively reached for a pistol - then paused, taking a second look.
The beast was tired. Its 'armor', as it was, was already ragged, cracked and even peeled off in places, revealing the sensitive skin underneath. Heck, it even seemed to struggle to move at this point. Seeing the insect in this state, the Sistermon remained silent.
"... God damn it..."
