"Cold..." Irving thought, as he traced his way back home through the somber streets of Udagawa. "I miss cold." This was the first time Irving felt cold since moving to Shibuya from his home in New York. He smiled nostalgically as the flurries brushed his face, repeatedly glancing down at a strange device in his hands. It was about the size of a phone, but much thicker, with a small black bar on top of it. On the screen, a GPS map was adorned with straight, multi-colored lines, one of them flashing between blue and white. Of course, this was the line Irving was following. Just a few months ago, Irving had packed up his investigation gear and moved to his aunt's home in Japan, but he hadn't gotten to use it again till tonight.
A common complaint in the neighborhood was electronic disturbances, happening on and off for a few years now with not a clue to the source. As the unsolved is Irving's passion, he took it upon himself to discover it. The ERD was an experimental piece of equipment Irving had brought from the US, designed to locate and determine the source of an electromagnetic interference, and so far it seemed to be working. Irving's ears began to buzz as he came across an alley, he glanced at his device again and smiled, turning the corner into the dark passage. The screen of his ERD began to flicker and change color. "Just as I expected..." he said quietly, with a confident grin. Irving hadn't come across a substantial case in his 2 years of private investigations, but he believed this would be his big break. He would discover the source of the interferences and restore peace to Shibuya!.. Or at least make them a little less irritated, either way, it was something, and something real.
"Real..." he muttered, as he reached the end of the alley. That was all Irving ever heard in regard to his line of work. Most of the cases he got were the result of a misidentified animal, a mentally unstable person or some old legend making a comeback. His parents weren't too happy about it either, and nor was his landlord, that's why he moved to Japan. Irving's aunt had always been supportive of his interests, and she really seemed to believe he could do something about the disturbances. Unfortunately, when his feet came to a stop, so did the interference. "You've gotta be kidding me." Irving said, unamused but unsurprised. "There's nothing he-" he paused as his eyes adjusted to a small, red object on the ground. As he approached it, the screen on his ERD began to go wild, rapidly flashing between a dozen different screens of blank color. "This...this has to have something to do with it" he said, as he shined his light in front of him, "this...egg?" Dumbfounded, Irving began to pace around the egg, looking it up and down. "This can't be it, there's no way, this looks like an over-sized Easter egg!" he exclaimed. The egg was massive, far larger than any bird he had heard of. It was bright red, with thick black stripes around it, and had an almost metallic sheen to it. "I'm not sure what this is, but I better take it back with me, just in case..."
After a few seconds of contemplation, Irving reached out to pick up the egg, but at that moment, it shook, twice. "What the hell?! There's no way, is this a real living egg? I swear, if there's some kind of dinosaur about to pop out and eat my face off..." He took a deep breath before again reaching out, and put his right hand around the top of the egg. Upon touching it, his hands began to feel very warm. No, just one hand, and not warm, but hot. "My ERD!" Irving exclaimed, as the smoking machine fell from his hands, sparking as it hit the ground. "Dammit!" he grunted, as he lifted the egg into his arms and stepped away from the glowing device. "What the hell did I do now?" he questioned. As Irving stared, the device began radiating white hot light, and seemed to melt and change shape, just before cooling down and leaving a huge plume of steam around him. As his eyes focused, he noticed his device didn't melt at all, but instead became an entirely new object. An oddly shaped, handheld electronic, similar in color to the egg. "What is this? What in the world is happeni-" Irving's face straightened in the blink of an eye, quickly remembering he was staring at a dead end. Footsteps, three pairs - no - four. Several low voices, conversing and snickering. "That's my cue" Irving said as he swiftly put both objects in his bag, turned around, and walked back toward the street as if nothing had happened at all. "Here goes nothing" he thought.
