Human Side
She had only been out of the hospital for twelve days before she collapsed again. It wasn't as long as the last time she had been let out, but much longer than the time before it. Nanami lay in her bed while Eiichiro sat beside her. A closed mystery novel rested at Nanami's side. Judging from her expression and the twitching of the nose she makes, Nanami's mother presumably went off somewhere private to cry, which her 10-year-old daughter found peculiar.
Between her mother and Eiichiro, her mother was by far the stronger of the pair. No offense to her stepfather, but the man couldn't hold an emotion in to save his life. If anyone were to be crying, Nanami thought that it would've been him. But instead, the man kept his usual demeanor, nervous yet intent on holding it together. Even now, he was giving his stepdaughter quick, but frequent glances, as if ready to jump to action the moment she asked for something. Nanami wondered if it was some kind of gender thing, like if guys weren't allowed to cry or something. But no one else seemed to think it was strange that her mother cried, so was it more acceptable for girls to cry.
But then, why wasn't Nanami crying, when she was the one that should be crying the most? She was the one that was going to die, after all.
Since it was likely that Nanami would be staying for quite some time now, the hospital staff had brought in a television. Nanami and Eiichiro had their eyes glues to a baseball game, and though Nanami didn't have any particular interest in sports, there wasn't a whole lot to do at the moment. It was late into the game, an even on the television screen, she could see the subtle movements of the pitcher and batter.
"Miss," Nanami stated just as the pitch was thrown. The batter swung too high and the baseball flew right past him.
"You mean 'strike'," Eiichiro corrected, giving a slight smile at Nanami's prediction. The girl simply grunted in acknowledgement. He looked down at the novel at Nanami's side before giving her another quick glance. "Did you enjoy the book? It wasn't... too hard to read or anything, was it?" Eiichiro always gave her some kind of gift for Nanami to pass the time by every time she returned to the hospital, but it always seemed like he needed some kind of approval. Nanami considered lying to him, but if she did that, she was afraid she would receive a thousand more books like it.
"It was kind of boring, so I just skipped ahead to kind out who the killer was. The rich husband and wife were... kissing other people, or something, and the wife killed the husband 'cause she wanted his half of the money." She didn't fully understand what the writer was talking about, but she thought she got the general gist of it. "But the man the wife was kissing tried to kill the wife and the woman the husband was kissing." Having summarized the book without taking her focus from the television screen, she tried to steer the conversation back to the game. "Mi-... Strike." The ball flew much slower than he must have anticipated, so the batter swung too early.
"Oh, um..." Eiichiro's flashed red from embarrassment. He scratched his head in a thoughtful manner. "I didn't realize that it had that kind of subject matter in it. Those kind of books have really changed back when I was younger..." His tone began to change mid-sentence, and Nanami felt a lecture coming on. Or at least, what Eiichiro considered a lecture. "But you shouldn't just read the ending of the books like that! Authors work really hard to write a book, so you should always try to read the whole thing, okay?"
Nanami still wasn't too comfortable with Eiichiro's lectures. Most of the time, he was a somewhat meek man that tried way too hard to win her approval. It's true that he and her mother had married, and Nanami's family name changed over to his, yet neither one referred to each other with anything other than their given names. Because of Nanami's circumstance, barely anyone was willing to lecture or make demands of her anymore. She found it a oddly comforting, yet this advice in particular was aggravating.
"I don't want to die reading some boring book," She answered, suddenly sitting up. The sudden movement made the room start spinning, but she pretended to focus. If Eiichiro noticed it, he didn't make any particular note of it. "I don't want to spend the rest of my life watching television and learning sports words and stuff, either!" She pointed towards the screen. Even with the television's low volume, the cracking sound of a baseball bat smacking an object reverberated through the room, and the camera followed the ball's path into the crowd while their cheers followed suit. It seemed the gods of baseball want to match her mood. She laid back down, muttering, "And I don't wanna be stuck in this place until I die..." Nanami turned away from Eiichiro and the television, and a long pause filled the room before she felt a hand pat her on the head.
"Nanami... you shouldn't give up so easily," Came Eiichiro's surprisingly calm voice. "Momoko and I are haven't given up yet, so neither should you."
"I already know that mom goes off to cry in the bathroom or something," Nanami countered, still looking away.
"Being sad, and giving up are two different things, Nanami," She heard him explain. "Besides, when your mother finishes crying, she walks up to every doctor, nurse, and janitor related to your case and demands an update of your conditions and what our options are. I've heard the staff talk. They call her a nuisance!" He let out a wry chuckle of amusement with just a faint hint of admiration. "But no matter how hard Momo or your doctors fight for you, none of it will matter if you give up. So do us all a favor and fight with us, okay?" Nanami felt one more pat on the head until she heard Eiichiro lean away.
Nanami stayed quiet for a solid minute before finally asking, "So how am I supposed to keep fighting when all I can do is just lie around all day?" She heard Eiichiro stammer a bit before he could answer.
"That's... um... Oh! Just think of something you want to do later in your life! Like... solve a murder mystery, or hit a home run!" He sounded proud of his answer despite how clearly contrived it was. "Nanami, if you could have all the time in the world, what would you want to do?"
"I want..." Nanami froze. Was there... anything that she wanted? She had always been sick for as long as she could remember, and she never stopped to think about what she would want if she could get better. "I want to get some sleep..." She grumpily replied, pulling the bed cover over her head. Nanami heard Eiichiro sigh, then saw him reach around to pull the book from off of her bed. Then she heard him stand up and turn the television off. After that, silence.
If she could have all the time in the world, what would she want to do? No... even if she had just a little more time...
Just a little more time, and she would...
Digimon Side
The vast, rolling greens of the Mainframe Hills quickly approached the pair as their large ears flapped behind them with the strong wind. The Trailmon they stoop upon seemed to shake from side-to-side. Cream the Terriermon had to get down on all fours and hold on with her tiny hands, a considerably more difficult task for her sister, Mocha. The Lopmon was stubbornly holding a crystal ball the size of her torso while trying to remain standing. Despite the struggle, the Lopmon gave her sister a cheeky grin. Cream simply rolled her eyes in response.
As far as bad decisions went, this was probably one of Mocha's worst. The pair decided to spend their first time in Terminus City just fooling around and seeing the sites. For once, Mocha acted surprisingly tame, far surpassing Cream's expectations. And yet, chaos ensued nonetheless. Chaos no doubt meticulously weaved together by a brown, tri-horned bunny with pink accents.
"You will not take one more step, thieves," A voice from behind declared, its clarity uncontested despite the constant sound of the air rushing past them. Cream and Mocha turned around to see a humanoid figure clad in silver and gold armor with embedded blue jewels. A purple mantle flowed behind him, and though a pointy hat occasionally shifted on his head it made no attempts to escape the force of the moving Trailmon. What stood out most to Cream, however, was the large blade the Mistymon held pointing it at the pair. "I know not why you sought to quarrel with me, but it ends here. Return my orb, and face your punishment with dignity. Otherwise..." Mistymon lifted the blade above his head as it was covered in flame. The movement of the Trailmon gave let loose a long streak of cinders, eventually scattering off into nothingness, possibly a sign of what was to become of the two Rookie Digimon. "Otherwise you will find that my mercy runs short."
Cream and Mocha had to gulp down their fears before all else. The Terriermon expected some kind of snide remark from her sister, yet Mocha remained uncharacteristically quiet. She turned to face the Lopmon, only to find her sisters ear making a brushing motion back and forth. Cream remained silent, but returned the gesture. The Mistymon gave them one more moment to speak, yet they returned only silence.
"Very well. Then face your exec-" The tiny pair of rabbits charged towards the magic warrior, the two of them screaming at the top of their lungs as their short legs closed the distance between them as fast as they could, side-by-side. As they approached, Mistymon swung down with his blade, creating an arc of flaming steel towards Mocha. But the Ultimate-level Digimon was taken aback by the pair's sudden act of aggression, and hesitated because of it. With the brief time given to her, Cream's used her ear to grasp Mocha's, pulling her sister out of the way of Mistymon's swing. And without any need to coordinate, the pair retaliated, taking a deep breath before letting loose.
"Blazing Fire!"
"Blazing Ice!"
A blast of hot air came rushing out of Cream's mouth, while an opposite blast shot out of her sister's. The two collided with the Ultimate level Digimon, yet their combined attacks didn't even faze him. Even so, damaging the clearly superior foe wasn't their intention. The scalding hot air of Cream's attack met with frosty cold air of Mocha's creating a fine cloud of vapor that partially obscured the duo. Due to the environment, it only lasted a second, but the pair were able to use this to run behind the Mistymon, successfully downwind from their foe.
"Such an inconsequential resistance shall not harm the likes of-" But before Mistymon could finish his sentence, the pair leaped off the side of the Trailmon. The pair expanded their ears to catch themselves in the air as they slowly off to the side, while the Mistymon on top of the Trailmon kept moving along. "You treacherous serpents! I will hunt you down and incinerate your insi-"
"Yeah, whatever! Here's your ball back, ya dweeb!" Mocha interrupted, chucking the crystal orb right back at the Ultimate-level Digimon. He reached out to catch it, leaning too far off the side. Losing his balance, he tumbled off the top of the Trailmon, crashing into the hills below while letting out screams of frustration and anguish. Once the screams faded into silence, they were replaced by the Lopmon's uproarious laughter. "Serves him right! What a loser!"
"Mocha..." Cream finally decided to speak up. She looked down at the ground below. Judging by speed they were going, it looked like it would be some time before they landed. "If you were just going to give the crystal ball back, what was the point of going through all this in the first place?" Cream saw Mocha's mischievous smile return.
"Punishment," She replied. "He was rude to you when you were askin' for directions, remember? Hoity-toity Ultimate, thinkin' he's so important just 'cause he's a lil' stronger than we are..."
"So you decided that just because he was a little inconsiderate..." Cream had to take a moment to rub her temples. "You would steal his precious item, jump on top of a moving Trailmon, then jump off while giving the item back?"
"Uhh... you were with me the entire time! You don't need to explain what just happened!" Mocha interjected. "Besides, hanging around Terminus City was sooo boring! It's not like we had the bits to do anything fun! I just wanted to... liven things up a lil', y'know? 'Sides, all we were doing was getting lost all the time!"
"That's why I was asking for directions..."
"Yeah! And you see where that got us!" Cream couldn't help but sigh at how incorrigible her sister could be. The two floated in silence for a little while longer before Mocha broke the silence. "Anyways, I guess we gotta find out what we want to do next! Want to see if we can top this by going after a Mega level Digimon? Ooh! Or maybe we can find sneak into one of those bases the humans run and poop in the-" Mocha cut off mid-sentence, staring down at the hills below. Cream turned her head to see a battered-looking Mistymon emerge, staring straight up at the defenseless pair of Rookies. Clutching his orb, it suddenly burst into flames as it rocketed towards the two at a blinding pace. The two Digimon couldn't even let out a scream befo-
"Hey, Cream... You don't talk about it much, but... you remember stuff that happened before... right?" Mocha's voice was weak, as if resigned to her fate. She had a feeling she knew what the next few questions were going to be.
The pair were lying face-up in a near-crater, staring up at the night sky. Cream's entire body was in agony as she could smell burnt fur and see the random bits of data scattering away from her fading form. "B-bits and pieces..." She was able to reply, though even saying that much pained her.
"I can't ever... seem to remember that kinda stuff... so... have we ever made it farther than this?"
"N-never..." Cream admitted. "It normally ends up like this..."
"It's really not fair... y'know?"
"I know..."
"I just want the freedom to do what I want, y'know?"
"I know..."
"But instead we get..." Mocha let out a grunt of pain. "Get pushed down by all the stronger Digimon... If only we could find a way to get stronger..." Cream couldn't help but give a sad smile as she went along with her sister's next words.
"If only we had just a little more time..."
"If only we had just a little more time..." Mocha let out a short chuckle cut off by a gasp of agony. "I guess you've heard this speech before... huh?"
"Once or twice," Cream answered, but then Mocha said something she never said before.
"Hey Cream, promise me something. Promise me that if you... remember stuff next time around... you'll... convince me to find a way to the human world..."
"R-really?"
"Yeah... It's just a gut feeling, but... I think... something might change if we go there..." Mocha began to trail off before she was able to focus again. "So promise me, 'kay?"
"I-I promise..." Cream answered. "But you won't... listen to a thing I say..."
"Y-yeah! You're probably right..." Mocha let out a sorrowful, pained laugh as her form finally began to fade away. "Hope to see you again, sis... love ya..." Cream was soon to follow.
"Me too, sis..."
