"Hey, sis?" Honoka had just untied her work apron and was putting up the closed sign on the door as her brother Eiji was sweeping up the loose flower petals off the floor. She tilted her head curiously to the man as she saw him tightly grip the broom's handle, a pensive look on his face. She noticed that he had wanted to say something to her all day, but he never brought it up, so she never asked. "Have you ever heard of Digimon?"
Honoka dropped the closed sign, and spent the next few seconds, fumbling to get a hold of the metal sign before it could collide with the ground. She just barely managed to get it back into her hands as she gave off a nervous chuckle. "D-Digimon? Sorry, but I've never heard of... whatever that is..."
"Oh. I see... I probably should have figured as much..." He looked disappointed as he went back to finishing his sweep. It wasn't like Eiji to be so glum. He was a little on the capricious side, but he generally bounced back from being down fairly quickly. Was a Digimon giving Eiji trouble? Honoka needed to find out more about what was bothering him.
"Eiji, you can always talk to me," She said, placing her hand on his shoulder to comfort him. "You've always been there for me, after all! If there's anything I can do for you, just ask!" All at once Eiji spun around and grasped Honoka's hand with light in his eyes.
"You mean it, sis?" He asked, an excited light in his eyes. Honoka was beginning to sense a trap. Still, she couldn't just take back her words. They were family, after all.
"Y-yeah!" She confirmed, albeit hesitantly.
"Then... I really need your help! There's this quest in a game I bought recently, and you're the only person I can ask to help me!"
"A... game?"
"It's the weekend, and you have the day off tomorrow, right? So I'll let you borrow a copy tonight, and you can download it overnight!"
"Um... I'm not so sure I'm the best person to ask... I don't really pla-" Her words were cut off by her brother's nigh-crushing embrace.
"Thank you so much, sis! I knew I could count on you!" He released her from his warm clutches and patted her shoulders before continuing his work.
"Y-yeah..." Was all Honoka could really say after that little exchange. She gave a sigh. She was going to spend most of her Sunday in the Digital World, seeing as her time in the Digital World was multiplied by a factor of seven, she could get so much more studying and training done. But she was going to spend that precious time... playing video games instead. What had she just gotten herself into?
"Digimon... Online...?" Honoka asked, looking at her computer screen. Eiji had brought his laptop into her room, sitting at her desk while the young woman sat on her bed. Why was there an online game about the Digital World? Did a Digimon make this, or perhaps a human decided to make game after being in the Digital World? "If it's an online game, shouldn't one of your friends online be better able to help you?"
"It was just released recently, and not too many people I know play it yet," Eiji leaned back in the chair with an unreadable expression. "Those that do haven't been playing very long so they aren't strong enough to clear this dungeon."
"But if I'm just starting the game, then doesn't that mean that I'll be too weak to help?" Eiji shook his head before standing up and making his way to Honoka. Leaning over, he typed something on her keyboard.
"There. I just logged you into one of my alternate accounts. Just select one a character and we'll be good to go. Any one of them will do." Honoka scrolled through the list of available characters. Looking at the playtime, it seemed like a bunch of them had quite a few hours behind them. And he said it was an alternate account? Just what did his main account look like!?
"B-big brother... How much time have you been putting into this game?" Her voice was a mix of concern and chastisement. "Because if you're spending time playing video games instead of sleeping, then..."
"I'll be fine," He assured her in annoyed tone. "I'm getting enough rest, eating healthy, and brushing my teeth! Anything else you wanna bring up?" Honoka rolled her eyes and looked back at the character list. Something caught her eye. Dancer-class? What kind of video game was this? She selected it half out of curiosity, and the game began to load proper...
As Honoka was brought into the game world, the first thing she noticed was her avatar's appearance. "Wait... is this kind of thing is allowed...?" She stared at the tall, thin, cat-like creature. Most of its body was covered in a leopard-like fur, save for the front of its torso and face. A purple veil covered the lower-half of the face, and save for some strange pattern covering part of its chest, everything else was exposed. "Is this supposed to be... some kind of belly dancer, or something?"
"Oh... I probably should have known you were going to pick the dancer..." She heard her brother comment.
"S-so... I guess I shouldn't be surprised... that this is your kind of thing..." She muttered. Well, everyone had their own tastes, after all.
"Oh, be quiet!" Eiji responded. "It just so happens that Bastemon's the most optimal Dancer build, and the game doesn't offer very much customization!"
"Still... putting girl characters in such revealing clothing like this... If you're not into... this kind of stuff, then it's kind of..." She silenced her words when she took a look at Eiji's avatar. Eiji's character had the head of a male lion, and its entire body was covered in fur. It wore of black, leather trousers, and nothing else. It was tall and its exposed upper body rippled with well-toned muscles. Then again, maybe this game had a little bit of... something for everyone.
"Alright! If you're ready, we can make our way towards the forest dungeon!" Eiji announced. "I'll tell you the controls as we go along, and we can practice on the mobs along the way! Follow me!" Eiji's avatar made its way across Honoka's screen, but her avatar remained still. "What's wrong, sis?"
"Umm... how are you supposed to move your character?"
Six Hours Later
Honoka couldn't help but scream in surprise as the large red insect dove from the trees and impaled her avatar with its mighty mandibles. She watched as her avatar scattered into bits of data and she respawned at the beginning of the dungeon. And without Honoka, Eiji got wiped out as well. "S-sorry..." She apologized once more.
"It's alright..." Eiji responded once more. "But that Kuwagamon has been surprising you every time we get to that part! You should know that it's gonna attack you by now!"
"You're right..." But the teenage girl couldn't help but panic every time it happened, anyway. Eiji stretched out his arms and sat up out of the chair.
"Well, we've been playing for a while, and I guess we're not gonna get much farther than this. I think we should probably call it quits and..."
"No."
Eiji gave his sister a quizzical look. "Pardon?"
"We're not done yet. I promised to help you beat this quest and that's exactly what I'm going to do." A
passionate flame flickered in Honoka's eyes. "So sit back down so we can get back to this!"
"It's really not that big a deal, Honoka. Honestly, I don't care about the quest," He scratched the back of his head, looking embarrassed. "I just wanted to spend some time with you having fun, for once. We never get to just hang out and chill like we used to!"
"Eiji..." Honoka wasn't really sure what to say to that.
"You've been... different, lately..." He explained. "You still do all ten-billion of your normal stuff, but lately you've been disappearing on your off-time. I'm just worried you're working yourself too hard, is all..." He looked over at his laptop monitor. "And since playing games is how I learned to relax and wind down, I figured..." He gave a nervous chuckle and closed his screen, leaving. "Anyway, I hope you're doing okay, is all."
Honoka got out of her bed, and stood in front of her brother. "Eiji... I said to sit back down!" She swept her leg, knocking her brother off-balance. She shoved her brother back into the seat and opened his computer back up.
"Honoka, you really don't have to help me anymore, sis! It's not really fun if we kee-"
"This isn't a matter of 'fun' anymore, big brother! We agreed to do this, so we're gonna do it! So suck it up and start thinking of new strategies!"
"Y-yes ma'am!"
And such was the last time Honoka's brother ever asked her to play a game with him.
