"Move it you two!" a Wendigomon snarled as he manhandled both Mandrake and Lothar down a musty corridor that smelled as if fresh air hadn't been let in for months. The smell, though bad, was the least of their problems. Only moments prior the two friends had stopped for the night in the very town this stinky location was still part of to rest before heading out of the Dark Area to points currently unplanned. Mandrake was beginning to wonder what possessed himself and Lothar to be in the Dark Area again in the first place seeing as their previous wanderings into this land hadn't been pleasant for the duo in the slightest.
Mandrake's companion and friend, Lothar was currently glaring angrily at a pair of Vilemon fluttering on either side of the Wendigomon. The nasty little pests were laughing at their prisoners cruelly. What was even more annoying was it was because of those two digimon that Mandrake and Lothar were in this mess in the first place. The two friends had barely made it to an inn when they were set upon by a swarm of at least ten of the nasty little demons for seemingly no reason. It had happened so fast that they were unable to react when they were snatched from the ground and taken to what looked like a small fortress. Even if Mandrake digivolved to Wizardmon, the magician doubted it would have helped all that much against ten champion level digimon.
Soon a row of cells came into view on the left side of the wall, yet Mandrake was not picking up any trace of other prisoners with his telepathy. This unnerved the Impmon making him wonder why there were so many cells but no other prisoners but himself and Lothar. Glancing at Lothar, Mandrake noticed the same unease in his friends body language. The muscular Elecmon wasn't as stupid as some thought often being quiet, observant, and quick to adapt. Unfortunately, with them being sorely outnumbered, brute strength alone would likely not be enough to get the duo out of trouble.
Moments later they were shoved quite roughly into a cell without so much as a word from the Wendigomon. Said Wendigomon then disappeared down the corridor and the Vilemon took up watch on the two prisoners they obtained for yet unknown purposes. Though getting out of the cell would be easy dealing with two champion level digimon like Vilemon wouldn't be as simple especially if one if them called for reinforcements. Mandrake didn't want to endanger Lothar by escaping without a plan since his friend had yet to reach the champion level. For now it seemed prudent to buy time and wait for the right moment. Maybe the reason they were imprisoned would reveal itself.
Not wanting the Vilemon guards to hear them Mandrake opened up a telepathic link between himself and Lothar. 'Lothar, can you hear me?' Mandrake called out telepathically to his friend.
'I hear you, Mandrake. I hope you have a good plan on how to get us out of this because I'm afraid to admit it but this matter has me stumped. We are outnumbered so fighting our way out isn't really an option and all I've seen are champion level digimon here.' Lothar answered back through the link his telepathic friend set up.
'I'm afraid I'm just as in the dark as you. I don't think we broke any laws so I am beginning to think they went after us figuring that we would be easy targets.' Mandrake replied.
'That wouldn't surprise me judging by how unsettling this place feels. I wonder what they have planned for us.' Lothar's thought seemed to answer itself as the Wendigomon from before returned and Mandrake broke the telepathic link between them.
"Why have you imprisoned us?" Mandrake asked to the Wendigomon with a calm voice but deep down he and Lothar had a feeling of dread creep through the two friends as their captor cruelly smiled.
"You should be grateful my men didn't kill you two on the spot instead of bringing you here." The Wendigomon answered his cruel smile never leaving his face as he continued "But I'm willing to give you both a chance to earn your freedom. One of you would only have to defeat my champion in a one on one battle. If the one I choose wins the both of you go free and I know just who of you I want to choose." Looking at the two digimon he had captive the Wendigomon pointed at Mandrake and said "And I choose the little blue eyed Impmon."
"I am the better fighter. Choose me instead." Lothar said in an attempt to protect Mandrake.
Wendigomon let out a brief snort of laughter before he said "I'm sure you are but that is why I chose your friend. It would make for a more interesting fight this way." He then unlocked and opened the cell before he said "All right, Impmon come with me and your friend better not try anything funny like attacking me."
Mandrake walked out of the cell as the door slammed shut behind the magician leaving Lothar behind in the cell. Turning back to Lothar, Mandrake approached the cell door and said "Don't worry, old friend. I'll do what I can to win that fight and then I'll come back for you. I don't trust Wendigomon to keep his word."
"All right that's enough. Time for the fight, little Impmon." Wendigomon grabbed Mandrake's tail and pulled him away from the cell door and pointed the magician down the corridor with a rough shove. Mandrake walked in the direction he was shoved with Wendigomon following close behind. "Oh one more thing. You must fight in your rookie form. If you digivolve during the fight your Elecmon friend will die. I assume you understand me."
"I understand you." Mandrake muttered just loud enough to be heard. Mandrake was led down the corridor until it opened up into a circular chamber made of stone and reminiscent of a gladiatorial pit. A stone slab came down behind him closing off the passage he came from so there was no turning back now. On the far side of the room on the opposite side the blue eyed Impmon stood in, a slab rose up and a growl was heard followed by glowing red eyes. A large digimon entered the room revealing itself to be an Aracadiamon(Champion). "By the Sovereigns!"
Meanwhile, with Lothar, the Wendigomon had activated a hidden switch on the wall opposite from the cells and a TV monitor came down. Shortly later the image of Mandrake and what appeared to be an Aracadiamon(Champion) came forth onto the screen. "By the Sovereigns!" Lothar said his statement mirroring Mandrake's. Though the image had no sound the sight of Mandrake being forced to fight a terrifying monstrous digimon was more than the muscular Elecmon handle as he stood as if paralyzed in horror. Since Mandrake was not allowed to digivolve in the battle the Impmon illusionist was most likely going to be outclassed. There was the slim hope that Mandrake could use one of his illusions to trick the Aracadiamon(Champion) into defeating itself but Lothar had a grim suspicion that such trickery might not work.
Back with Mandrake, the magician was keeping a close eye on the digimon sent in to fight him. His sapphire blue eyes never left the Aracadiamon(Champion) as he tried to come up with a plan of action. Said Aracadiamon(Champion) was circling Mandrake like a shark. Focusing his magic, Mandrake waved his hands as he said "Hypnotic Illusion!"
As the Aracadiamon stopped in front of Mandrake, after finishing one of the circles around the magician, what appeared to be fire shot forth from the blue eyed Impmon. The illusionary flames wound around his champion level foe without touching the imposing beast. For all it knew the flames might be real.
Unfortunately Mandrake's illusion didn't deter the large digimon as with a swipe of one of its hands the illusionary flame vanished into thin air. Before Mandrake could make a move the Aracadiamon proved to be frightenly fast as it launched itself forth. Before Mandrake could process what was happening, the little Impmon found himself in the clutches of his monstrous opponent seconds before the creature flung him into the wall. Blinding pain filled Mandrake as he hit the wall on his right side with his wrist taking the blunt of the damage. Mandrake groaned in pain as he clutched his right wrist with his left hand. His wrist was likely broken judging by the sheer pain he was in. As if adding insult to injury, the Aracadiamon(Champion) approached Mandrake from the left and punted the Impmon like a football with its foot making contact with his ribs on his left side. It seemed as if the beast was more intelligent as it appeared, seemingly sadistically so.
Mandrake lay in a heap on the ground where he landed after being kicked. The very act of breathing hurt and he was in so much pain that his vision had gone blurry. Yet, somehow, he remained conscious though how he had no idea. If his and Lothar's lives weren't at stake he may have blacked out by now. So likely he was only conscious through sheer stubbornness alone.
Lothar was watching with horror as his friend Mandrake was being brutally beaten by a sadistic monster who was enjoying his friend's suffering. The muscular Elecmon hadn't felt so helpless since his encounter with those slavers he and Mandrake encountered a while back. As much as he wanted to help Mandrake he was trapped in that cell and it was most likely he would be forced to fight that brutal monster Aracadiamon(Champion) next. His worry for his friend accumulated until he felt a rush of power making him feel stronger. Managing to tear his eyes away from the brutality on the screen he looked at himself. His body was now glowing and, judging by the power rush, he knew what was happening. "The light of digivolution?" he muttered before he thought 'Wendigomon only said Mandrake wasn't allowed to digivolve. He never said anything about me.' The glow of the light increased causing the Wendigomon and the two Vilemon guards to glance in his direction with looks of shock. "Elecmon digivolve to Leomon!" As the light faded a Leomon with brown eyes was staring down the three champion. Clenching his hand into a fist he felt energy flow into that hand. "Fist of the Beast King!" Lothar shouted as a burst of energy taking the shape of a lion head burst forth from his fist and flew toward the bars. The attack connected with the cell door causing it to fly across the room with explosive force and crash into Wendigomon, the force of both the attack and the door knocking him out. The Vilemon were hardly a problem considering they flew away as fast as their wings would carry them the instant Wendigomon fell unconscious.
Those two cowards weren't important in Lothar's eyes as he turned and headed in the direction Mandrake was at full speed. He soon came to a dead end but he wasn't going to let a mere wall stop him. "Fist of the Beast King!" Lothar shouted.
On the other side of the wall, Mandrake was unaware that Lothar was so close since his pain was so great he couldn't feel anything but the pain itself. It seemed that the Aracadiamon(Champion) had gotten bored with him as Mandrake felt the creatures large hand close over his head with the intent to squeeze Mandrake's head till it was crushed. With the strength the champion level digimon possessed it would be an easy task. However the wall exploding outward and revealing a Leomon caused the Aracadiamon(Champion) to release Mandrake's head in surprise.
Wasting no time Lothar launched himself at the digimon that was intending to murder his friend. "Smashing Kick!" Lothar roared as he struck the Aracadiamon(Champion) in the face with a powerful heel kick causing the cruel creature to stumble backwards and away from Mandrake's barely conscious form. Lothar then began channeling aura from around himself forming a ball in the palm of his hands. He then thrust his hands towards the dazed champion digimon in front of him with and yelled "Aura Ball!" The attack struck the Aracadiamon(Champion) in the face and the dazed digimon collapsed in an unconscious heap on the ground.
Lothar moved to Mandrake's side and knelt down before he asked "Mandrake, can you hear me?"
Unfocused sapphire eyes looked in Lothar's direction only seeing a large blurry figure near him but he recognized the voice of his friend. With a pained gasps Mandrake said "Yes, Lothar. I can hear you. It seems you have digivolved though I can't see you very well right now."
"Don't worry about it, Mandrake. Let's get you out of here before Wendigomon wakes up and sends his cowardly minions after us." Lothar said as he gently turned Mandrake over onto his back before lifting his injured friend into his arms. Despite him being extra careful Mandrake let out a pained whimper both times he was moved but seemed to relax in the safety of Lothar's arms as the lion man like digimon dashed through the fortress they were imprisoned in and to the hospital of the town they had been in before they were kidnapped.
After spending a week in the hospital, with the help of digimon with healing abilities, Mandrake was his old self again. Lothar, who was still a Leomon, had left the hospital at his friend's side and as they reached the Trailmon Station Mandrake had digivolved into Wizardmon. It would turn out later that both would still be in their champion forms and neither had minded one bit.
