The supposedly haunted woods were not exactly a favorite spot for most small children. In fact a great many of Shibuya's grade schoolers avoided Shibuki Forest like the plague, and even when they did go there it was almost always in a group. This was not the case for little Akihiko Kagome, who hummed to himself as he balanced his way across a fallen log, hopping off when he reached the end. He had come here right after school, as evidenced by the fact he was still in his uniform. He'd probably get in trouble for that later if his parents found out, but if he was careful he was sure it wouldn't be a problem. He had been coming out here more and more since his and Katsu's fight, avoiding his older brother without really realizing it. He told himself it was just because he liked to come out here and draw, which, to be fair, was true. He had found himself a nice, dry little spot with an old stump to sit on, and it quickly had become the young boy's "studio". He was careful not to stay out past sundown, though. He was brave, not stupid, and he wasn't going to take any chances with ghosts!
Upon arriving at his stump, however, something else caught his eye. "Huh? What's this?" He said, reaching down towards a small, white and purple device sitting propped against the old wood.
"That's mine, hands off!"
The boy yelped, his hand closing around the device and picking it up by reflex, as he turned to see a small pink blob hopping towards him angrily. "Put down that digivice right now or-" But the Koromon cut off his threat when he saw a bright light emanate from the digivice, much to the awe of the boy holding it. "I see, I guess you're my tamer? I wasn't expecting my human to be so… small."
"T-Tamer? What do you mean? And hey, you're smaller than me!" The boy snapped back, stomping his foot. "Now could you please tell me what this is, and what you are?"
"Alright, sit down, this'll take a while."
And thus, over a substantial amount of time, the koromon explained to the human about the digital world, digimon, and his status as a tamer. He wasn't sure how the boy would react at the end, and he watched him cautiously to see how he'd respond.
"S-So you're my partner from another world, full of monsters?" Aki asked, and after Koromon nodded, he broke into a grin, "That's so cool!" He shouted at the top of his lungs, jumping up and throwing his hands into the air.
'Gotta admit, not the reaction I expected.'

"Remind why we're here again?" Ziggy the ModokiBetamon clung to the back of his tamer, forefins slung over the boy's shoulders as if he were some sort of living froggy backpack. He had taken up this position because at some point David had the genius idea to go off path in some haunted woods, leading to an overgrown part with flora that extended up a good two feet. There was no way the small digimon was going to be able to see through all that.
"Obviously, we're esploring. Paths are boring. You know someone built them so people wouldn't wander into ghosts," David stated quite matter-of-factly. The boy carried his partner through the tall grass, swinging a small wooden blade through it, pretending to cut down plans with a machete. "Don't you wanna see a ghost?"
"Don't ghosts normally come out at night? It's like 4 in the afternoon."
"You know mom won't let me stay out that late. And it's night time in America, so there could be ghosts."
"That's not how time works. I mean, it is. But that's not how ghosts work. I think. Wait, no. Ghosts aren't real." There was just no arguing with this child. One would think that after so long together, Ziggy'd know that by now. Before they could get deeper into a debate over the outing, a loud shout came and startled the pair. David and Ziggy both jumped a bit in surprise at the sudden audial intrusion, causing the pair to separate, Ziggy falling to the ground but landing on his feet.
"Come on. Don't you want to see what's 'so cool'?" David had already begun running off in the direction of the voice, leaving Ziggy to quickly hop along behind, using the sounds of the boy's footsteps to make sure he was going in the right direction.
It wasn't long before they found themselves in a very nice clearing containing, among other things, a new partnership. "You're right, that is cool!" David exclaimed before turning back to his own partner. "He's got a pink mon, just like you were."
"We are not the same," Ziggy replied, mildly annoyed at the assumption. "That's a Koromon. I was a Tokomon. They are completely different."

Aki had been rambling pretty much nonstop after that first outburst, about how excited he was, and how cool the situation was. Koromon was beginning to wonder if the digivice had made some kind of mistake, because certainly this kid couldn't be the right partner for him. He seemed nice enough, sure, but he really wasn't taking this very seriously, was he. Well, at least he was enthusiastic, and more importantly wasn't afraid of him. The few humans he had approached since coming to the real world had all run away from him on sight. He was more or less content to just wait until he could get a word in edgewise, but soon his antennae perked up and he turned away from Aki, facing the forest. "Be quiet, I think someone is coming!"
"Huh?" Aki said, turning and seeing a boy emerge from the forest. More importantly, he had another digimon with him! Aki didn't recognize the newcomer, though since he seemed younger than him that wasn't surprising. He also didn't seem like he was from Japan, which his American accent gave away pretty quickly. Still, it was cool to meet someone else with a digimon so quickly after meeting his own! "Hi! I'm Akihiko!" He said, giving a quick and polite bow. He then looked at his partner, "Hey, he's a lot bigger than you."
"It's because he's a rookie. I told you about digivolving, I'm a level below him." He said, before looking back at the Betamon skeptically. He, as a rule, didn't trust much of anyone, regardless of their age or their apparent friendliness. It was just not in his nature, So while Aki was more than excited to meet a fellow tamer, he'd be keeping a close eye on both of them.
"Oh right!" Aki said, "I just met Koromon today, so I'm still learning about all this stuff. How long have you been with your partner?" He asked. He had to admit, the betamon was a great deal more impressive than Koromon, but he knew that he wouldn't stay a pink blob long-term, at least.

"Oh, right. I'm David." How rude, not introducing one's self right away. David returned the bow, uncomfortably. "And this is my partner, Ziggy." Ziggy, too, attempted a bow. However, his general body shape and proximity to the ground made it a lot more like a slightly extended nod.
"If you take care of each other, Koromon will get big, too."
"Yeah! David interrupted, denying his partner any further explanation he may have had. "Ziggy's not that big. Before I met him, I met a big red raptor looking guy. DemiTyranomon. Yeah. And then he got attacked by an even BIGGER octopus thing. Gesomon. And it attacked us with some sludge, but I got away. But but the biggest of all was this girl who turned into a HUGE thing with tentacles and flesh and and...I don't even know! More stuff. She was bigger than my house." Any little bit of awkward shyness there may have been from meeting someone unexpected was quickly cleared away as David got quickly excited to talk to someone his own age about these amazing things that had happened.
"I'm just glad she was on our side. But as for how long..." David and Ziggy both just stared at each other for a moment. Time had somewhat lost meaning since he hadn't yet enrolled in school, and he hadn't been keeping track.
"A year?"
"Couple months?"
The two answered nearly simultaneously, yet were quite far off from each other. "Time doesn't work the same in the digital world." Ziggy stated, completely glossing over the fact that there was a whole other world out there. "You could spend a whole week over there, and barely a day would pass over here."
At the prospect of showing off to a new friend, David quickly took out his digivice and queued up the portal program, ready to take Akihiko anywhere. "Wanna check it out?" Everyone is searching for a world where they belong. A place of light, free of falsehood.

"Wow, really?!" Aki said, looking at Koromon, imagining what he'd wind up looking like. He was picturing some bright pink dinosaur, and he had to suppress a snicker. Whatever he'd become, he was sure it'd be a lot more impressive than that. Hearing the other pair speak to eachother made him realize something, though. "Oh, can I give you a nickname like Ziggy?" Aki asked his partner, not wanting to presume but also really hoping the small digimon would say yes.
Truth be told, Ryuga almost didn't. He thought it was a bit silly to allow a human to name him, partner or not. However, he didn't want to make waves so soon after they met eachother. "Just please make it something dignified." He said, glancing at the Betamon, the implication clear. "Ziggy" was not his idea of an impressive name for a digimon, clearly.
"Okay um... how about... Ryuga!" Aki said with a smile, clearly very proud of himself. "When you write it out, it means 'dragon fang' I don't know if you're gonna be a dragon when you get bigger, but you do have those pointy teeth, so I think it works!" He waited to hear a verdict.
"I suppose it'll do." He said. In truth, the Koromon was surprisingly pleased with the name. It certainly didn't sound like a pet name. He turned his attention back to the other pair. as they finally said how long they had been together. "Ah yes, I forgot about that. The digital world's time is very strange compared to this place. Digimon don't really notice since we don't age the same way humans do, but I've heard for humans it can be disorienting." He explained. However, when David offered to take them to the digital world, he suddenly grew flustered. "Absolutely not!"
"Huh? but why not?" Aki said, "I wanna see the digital world!"
"I wouldn't be able to protect you. Absolutely no trips to the digital world until I digivolve." The koromon said, putting his proverbial foot down firmly.

David is not the kind of person who expects people his own age to deny the call to adventure. Adults, sure, but kids? Unheard of. So when the newly dubbed Koromon Ryuuga put his proverbial foot down and declined, David had already begun to pierce the veil between worlds with his digivice. He had drown the device down a few inches, as if unzipping the air. Within those first couple inches, reality seemed to curl backwards, falling away to reveal the tiniest glimpse at the grand city of Terminus. But, the grand reveal fell short.
"Oh, ok." It was all he could manage. The surprise had left him a bit flustered. With all the grace of a lame gazelle, David reclosed the rift and pocketed his digivice. "So what do you guys want to do? I never figured out how to make digimon change. Ziggy just did one day." Everyone is searching for a world where they belong. A place of light, free of falsehood.
