Birds of a Feather 2: Electric Boogaloo (Unica & Birdie)

Birdie didn't engage--as much as she desperately wanted to--because she knew that by doing so, she would be scolded by her young tamer, and nothing was more humiliating that having a seven-year-old human tell a Digimon what to do. So the Biyomon instead bit her tongue and acted as though Kaya and Hawkeye weren't there at all. With any luck, the duo would pick up on the fact that they weren't wanted and would leave to do whatever it was they were planning to do before bumping into Birdie and Unica. Unfortunately for the pink avian, however, they were sticking around. Even worse was the fact that Unica had slowed down to walk beside them! Birdie huffed in annoyance but said nothing as she took the lead and navigated the mall's corridors with precision.
Trailing a short distance behind her partner, Unica walked alongside her new friends and did her best to make them feel included. "Why is there a belt on your head?" she asked Hawkeye. She barely gave him enough time to respond before adding, "Is it keeping all your brains in your head because you're so smart and your brain is like PSHEW!" She pantomimed someone's head exploding by placing her hands on either side of her head and extending them quickly into the air. The idea of Hawkeye's brains and, subsequently, his intelligence being contained inside his skull by nothing more than a belt was such a funny concept to Unica that she began laughing. "That's so silly!"

As much of a pain as Birdie was, Unica was definitely a good kid in Kaya's eyes. She was younger than her own sister, both physically and mentally, but there was something about a child like innocence that Kaya felt she was already starting to lose even at age thirteen. Plus she was doing a really good job at keeping Birdie in check, so that was plus two points for Unica right there.
She still had her weird moments though, like right now when she was asking Hawkeye about the belt on his head. She asked if it was to keep all his brains inside his head because he was "so smart" and his brain was too big for his head? Kaya sweatdropped, closing her eyes and smiling lightly. "I don't think that's how it works, Unica."
"I suppose Birdie never told you about Digicores?" Hawkeye asked. "Allow me to explain. A Digimon is made up of data, and at the center of every Digimon is a Digicore. Think of it as the heart and soul of a Digimon. A vital necessity for our very existence, as it controls our metabolisms, or our appetites and digestion, our breathing, and our thinking."
"Hawkeye is very smart indeed," Kaya added, "although he sometimes has his own dumb moments like we do. Like the time he walked into the glass door that leads to our backyard."
Anime lines of despair could probably be seen on Hawkeye's head by this point. "Did you really have to tell her that...?"

Unica knew that wasn't actually how brains (or belts) worked. Had she really stopped to think about it, she likely would've come to the conclusion that Hawkeye was making some sort of strange fashion statement by his clothing choice. But she obviously hadn't given her question that much consideration before asking it. Instead, she stated the silly thought that had popped into her head, knowing full well that there was a slim chance of it being the truth. Of course, she couldn't be 100% confident, for Digimon were strange creatures who defied all laws that humans were bound by. But the icing on the cake was Kaya and the fact that she seemed so dismayed by the childish logic.
Unica giggled then turned back to Hawkeye as he wondered aloud whether Birdie had told her about Digicores. The young girl made a face and glanced up in consideration. Something about that word sounded familiar, but she couldn't remember what it was or where she'd heard it before, so she shook her head and listened to the red avian's explanation. That is... she tried to listen. He used big words and concepts that she didn't completely understand, so it proved a challenge for her to follow along. Digimon were data? At the center of a Digimon was a core? The core was like a heart... Or soul? Unica furrowed her brow at this. Hearts and souls were different, so which was it? Wait, what did he just say? Something was a vial? What's a metabolism?
Unica stared at Hawkeye with a blank, nonplussed expression, but that changed the moment Kaya mentioned that even he had some dumb moments. Like when he walked into a glass door. The young tamer giggled and smiled at Hawkeye when he grew ashamed and embarrassed. "Birdie flies into my window all the time!" she exclaimed while gently covering her mouth with her fingertips and raising her shoulders, as if she were sharing a really scandalous secret. Having heard her name, Birdie glanced over her shoulder and eavesdropped into the conversation. When she heard what Unica was saying, she sneered and looked ahead again, grumbling something inaudible under her breath.

At first Hawkeye was confused on why Unica was just giving him a blank stare when he was talking about Digicores. It took him a few moments to remember that he was speaking to a seven year old who described people as "Miss Lady" and "Bunny," and had asked him if his belt kept his brains from spilling out of his head. He wondered which one of the two was actually the dumb one...?
Either way, that didn't matter right now. Hawkeye could still salvage this, he just had to use smaller words. He cleared his throat. "A Digicore is like every inside human body part all in one place. Does saying it like that help you understand, Unica?"
While Hawkeye was ashamed about Kaya sharing his embarrassing experience with a glass door, that feeling almost went away completely when Unica added that Birdie flies into windows all the time. Kaya covered her mouth with her hand as she laughed while Hawkeye pretended he was coughing to disguise his own laughter, much to Birdie's expense.
"Despite both birds being super different, they're kind of the same in certain ways. Does Birdie have a favorite food? Because Hawkeye's is strawberries, he loves them so much that sometimes I'll bribe him with-"
"TH-THEY REALLY DO NOT NEED TO KNOW THAT!" Hawkeye immediately interrupted.
"Oops... sorry Hawkeye, I'll be quiet for now."

While Hawkeye was preoccupied trying--and failing--to explain to Unica what a Digicore was, Kaya was more interested in sharing stories about her Digimon partner. Although her confession about Hawkeye walking into a glass door seemed to bother him, the red avian appeared to relax some when Unica shared the humiliating fact that Birdie tended to fly into windows. Unlike Hawkeye's previous encounter with a glass door, Birdie flew into the window all the time. Had Birdie bothered to defend herself, she would've explained that it was a force of habit. Her apartment in Old Terminus had a broken window, and that was the only point of entry into the half-collapsed abode. So when she arrived in the human world, she tried to enter Unica's home the same way: through the window.
Needless to say, it's ended in humiliation more often than not, and the salt in the wound came when both Kaya and Hawkeye started chuckling. Even though she flew a few feet ahead, it was clear that Birdie was beginning to tense up at the idea of being laughed at. Perhaps the elder tamer noticed this and chose to change the subject as result, or maybe it was just impeccable timing. Either way, the topic of conversation switched to favorite foods. Apparently Hawkeye really liked strawberries, so much so that Kaya would even use them in order to bribe him. When Hawkeye frantically interrupted his tamer and Kaya apologized, Unica giggled.
"I like strawberries! They're REALLY yumming!" Unica exclaimed, hoping that by confessing her own love for the fruit, Hawkeye wouldn't feel so embarrassed. "Birdie likes strawberries too," she added before turning to her partner and hollering, "Birdie, are strawberries your favorite?"
There was a long moment of silence... so long, in fact, that Unica was beginning to wonder if the Biyomon had even heard her at all. Just as the young tamer opened her mouth to ask the question again, there came a reply. "No," was all Birdie had to say. She stopped flying, glanced back at the group, and motioned to a store that appeared to specialize in digivice accessories. "We're here," she said to Unica. Bright blue eyes jumped to Kaya and Hawkeye as she proceeded to ask, "Are you two just gonna follow us around all day, or what?" From her tone, it was clear that she was sick of the company, but she also wasn't going to make a big fuss about it, especially not here and now.

Now had Birdie just swallowed her pride and defended her tendency to fly into the window, Kaya and Hawkeye would have understood completely. It was a hard thing to give up a habit, as Hawkeye can greatly understand as he was working on getting better at socialization. But Birdie chose to say nothing so now they probably think that Birdie just literally cannot see glass like most birds can't.
All on you for that one, Birdie.
Hawkeye wasn't embarrassed about liking a fruit, why would he be? He was embarrassed at the part where Kaya mentioned sometimes bribing him with them, big difference. It was a good thing that the embarrassment didn't last long as Unica agreed with Hawkeye's opinion on the fruit. "Not my personal favorite but they are pretty good in a lot of things," Kaya would say. Unica would then ask Birdie if strawberries were her favorite too, and after a long period of silence the Biyomon simply said "no."
Kaya crossed her arms and sighed in response. "Would it kill her to just be nice for once?"
The group then arrived at a digivice accessories store, which was the store that Unica and Birdie seem to have come to the mall for. Birdie asked Kaya and Hawkeye if they were just gonna follow them around all day, which was a fair albeit rude question to ask. "Well, I do not trust you to be alone with a seven year old, so yeah, we will."
"We will?"
"Of course! Besides, I wanna see the different accessories for the digivice as well."
Walking into the store, Kaya and Hawkeye would browse around at the different selection of items. A lot of these sounded very useful, like an antigrav device or a feed program. Hawkeye had been to the holosuit shop in the mall before, but he hadn't been to the digivice acessory store so this was all new to him as well. Maybe they'd walk out of here with something as well?

If Birdie had human facial features, her nose would have been scrunched up in annoyance and disgust, her mouth would have been pressed into a thin line, and her jaw would have been clenched in an attempt to control her temper and bite her tongue. And yet, with such a large and prominent beak taking up the majority of her face, her expression hardly changed in response to Kaya's claim that she didn't trust the Biyomon alone with a seven-year-old. "Well she's not dead yet, so I think I'm doing a pretty fine job looking after her," Birdie huffed before turning her back to the duo and entering the store, seemingly unaware of how low a bar she'd set for herself.
Unica hadn't bothered sticking around to hear Birdie and Kaya bicker. Instead, she raced into the store eagerly and instantly began browsing everything for sale. There were items such as Anti-Gravity Devices and EV Suits; there were baskets full of various charms and stickers one could use to decorate their device; there were new digivice models and colors available for folks who wanted to spice things up; and most importantly, there were digivice cradles. While Unica gawked over the charms and compared them to the dango phone accessory that current dangled from the lavender digivice, Birdie went straight to the cradles.
There were a surprising number of options. Not only were there different sizes, but there were different colors, designs, and styles. One cradle had been created to clip onto someone's belt loop. The model on display was black with red flames and was fitted with a fake Fusion Loader digivice. Another was fashioned into a necklace, was a soft rose pink color, had a few flower designs inscribed around the edges, and held a faux D-3 digivice. There were classic options too--white and basic bracelets--but Birdie wasn't sold. She was more a fan of the darker colors, so she continued to examine the cradles in silence.

"Well it's a good thing she isn't dead so at least there's that," Kaya attempted to argue, "but there's more to a Digimon-Human partnership than just making sure the other doesn't die. There's a bigger reason why certain people and Digimon become connected, after all." Sure Kaya didn't exactly know what that reason was, but there had to be a pretty big one, right?
When entering the store, Kaya and Hawkeye would split off as well. Kaya walked over to join Unica in observing the various things for sale. They had plenty of bits from the different quests and stuff the duo had done, so it wouldn't hurt to buy much. What Kaya currently had her eyes on were the Digi-FM Radios, the Human-Digi comms, Antigrav device, and the EV suit, among others. She just grabbed what she could afford (while having money left over) and thought that would be useful in some way. "Can't believe I didn't know about this store sooner! What are you planning to get, Unica?"
Hawkeye, meanwhile, would join Birdie in observing the Digivice cradles, albeit from a comfortable distance apart from each other. The Hawkmon had to admit, Kaya did have some trouble keeping her Digivice in her pocket from time to time, maybe a cradle was what they needed? There was one that attaches to a belt loop that looked like it could fit her Digivice model. Maybe Hawkeye would purchase one of those?
While they were browsing, Hawkeye looked over at Birdie. He could definitely tell that she was upset. It was a gamble trying to talk to her though, as she was seemingly always looking for a fight. Still, Kaya had rubbed off on him, so it couldn't hurt to try. "There was a time that I would've agreed with your stance on humans, Birdie. Hell, I used to feel the same way about Digimon as well as humans, or just forming connections with others in general. Kaya may be human, but that should not matter. She changed my life for the better. I am asking you this not as an enemy but as an equal; why do you dislike humans so much?"

Kaya attempted to offer a rebuttal in response to Birdie's cold observation that Unica was not dead and that alone apparently meant that she was a good partner, but the girl's words fell on deaf ears as the Biyomon turned and entered the store mid-conversation. Kaya had some good points to make, but Birdie didn't want to hear them, especially not from some human who she had tried and failed to kill some months earlier. The irony of claiming to be a trustworthy protector while in the company of a past victim was not lost on her. She knew anything that came out of Kaya's mouth would be biased as a result of their past interactions, and the way Birdie was behaving now did little to mend their bitter relations.
The store itself was filled with almost every digivice accessory and app that one could imagine, save for holosuits. Buying a holosuit was a more involved process, it seemed, and so there was an entirely different store for that. Of all the items to get distracted by in the digivice store, Unica was drawn to the charms that were located in a series of pull-out plastic drawers. When Kaya asked what the young girl was planning to get, Unica held up a phone charm with a little Biyomon at the end. "It's Birdie!" she giggled. The Biyomon charm had a massive head with giant, glistening eyes and a springy ribbon which bobbed as Unica moved. The body of the Biyomon, however, was tiny and squat, roughly half the size of its head. It was cute, in a chibi sort of way.
In another part of the store stood Hawkeye and Birdie, some six feet apart as they quietly enjoyed (if that word could be used in this situation) each other's company. There was a long silence as the two avians browsed the available cradles. Most appeared to be made with older tamers in mind, and so Birdie had a particularly difficult time finding one that would fit onto her young tamer's narrow wrist. There were other options available to purchase, but Birdie was drawn to the bracelets for one key reason: visibility. While the necklace would be hidden under a shirt, for instance, a bracelet could be seen by everyone at all times. Birdie would be able to check the cradle any time she wanted to make sure Unica didn't screw up and misplace the digivice again.
The silence between the two Digimon was eventually broken when Hawkeye spoke, his voice in a hushed tone as to not come off overly hostile or aggressive. Birdie listened but gave no indication that she was. Instead, she continued to scour the bracelets in search of one that was the right size and shape. The red bird claimed that he once felt the same way about humans but after meeting Kaya, his opinion changed. Birdie had heard many stories similar to this. Digimon started off skeptical of humans and the idea of partnership, but after finding their tamer, they had a change of heart. Birdie scowled down at the cradle in her claws at the idea.
When she first met Unica, she was angry. More than that. Combative. Everyone knew it. Even Hawkeye and Kaya knew it because they had been told the story. What they hadn't been told was how Birdie felt when she first realized that Unica was her partner. Although she spoke the word with disdain, she remembered the moment with fondness. In response to both Unica and Birdie's heightened emotions at the time, the digivice began to glow. It was a warm, comforting sensation. It was like finding her way back home. In a way, it felt right. Like two puzzle pieces fitting together with ease. The feeling of belonging had overwhelmed her with emotion unlike anything she'd felt before. Unica seemed to feel it too, for as soon as the digivice began to shine, the girl stopped crying and smiled up at her digital partner.
That sensation would've been enough to make most Digimon submissive to their human counterparts, but not Birdie. The blissful feeling confused and scared her, and when she was scared, she became angry. That anger grew in the time the two had spent together, eventually erupted as a result of Unica losing the digivice, and ultimately led to Birdie's banishment in the Northern Prominence. As a form of repentance, Birdie promised Unica that she would behave herself... which meant no talking bad about humans. And so, when Hawkeye asked why she hated humans so much, the Biyomon continued to act as though she hadn't heard the question.
She had no trouble being bitter and nasty, especially after having made the promise to Unica, but this felt like a trap in some way. If she called humans "meatbags" and "prey" again then what would happen? Another month of banishment? Another fight that would end with her pinned to the ground as Hawkeye and Kaya flew away feeling proud of themselves? Birdie stole a glance at the Hawkmon and narrowed her eyes as she silently studied his body language. It didn't look like he was itching for a fight. He seemed genuinely curious to know where her anger stemmed from. Some of the tension in Birdie's body appeared to melt away at this realization, but she remained silent as she glanced back at the cradle in her hand.
She placed the bracelet back in its spot, strolled a little farther down the aisle, then stopped to examine another one. Still silent, Birdie tried to find the words to say, but all she could think of was "They are weak hunks of meat that need us for protection. We are nothing but glorified guard dogs to them. We aren't their friends, we're their slaves!" But that hadn't gone over well in the past. Perhaps she could keep it short and simple instead. "They enslave us and hold our natural power captive. We have to obey them or risk never evolving." Birdie sighed as she put another cradle down, feeling conflicted about the question. Every answer she came up with did nothing but pour salt in the wound. It just reminded her of the fact that she was forced to be submissive to Unica or else risk never becoming the Digimon she wanted to be.
The tension returned to Birdie again as her shoulders stiffened, her chest puffed up slightly, and her glare returned. "What are you? My therapist? Mind your own business, would ya?" she eventually said, though the tone of her voice betrayed the hostility she had meant to convey. There was a sorrow behind her words, a sense of defeat and maybe even a bit of regret. Regardless of what was really going on in her head, it was clear that she didn't want to talk about it. With a sense of finality, she turned her back to Hawkeye and continued down the aisle.

Wanting to remove the bad thoughts of her current argument with Birdie, Kaya had joined Unica in viewing the Digivice accessories and asked what Unica was gonna get. In response, the little girl help up a little chibi-esque Biyomon charm, claiming it to be Birdie. Initially Kaya blinked in response, the Biyomon charm was absolutely adorable but at the same time it didn't remind her of Birdie at all; this Biyomon charm looked nice, after all.
But then her vision focused on Unica's happy smile... despite the Biyomon's faults, Unica really did love her, didn't she? It made Kaya kind of sad that Birdie didn't seem to reciprocate those feelings back to the human. She desperately hoped things could change between them someday. In response, Kaya smiled back. "It looks exactly like her," she said. Kaya would then pick up another phone charm in the same style as Unica's, only this time a Hawkmon instead of a Biyomon. "And this is Hawkeye!"
Back with the aforementioned bird Digimon, Hawkeye noticed that Birdie wasn't really responding to any of his questions instead of lashing out at him like she usually would. "You were alone when Kaya and I met you. That must've meant you separated from Unica at some point. I would understand if you did not want a partner but you two are together again. Was that your choice? No matter what anyone says, you should always have a choice."
Hawkeye watched as Birdie walked further down the aisle, observing more of the Digivice cradles. If only he could tell what she was thinking. "You can say exactly how you feel to me. I promise I will not become angry, I just wish to know where you are coming from."
Eventually Birdie stated, in her own way, that she did not want to talk about this subject anymore, though not in an angry tone, but rather a sorrowful one... regardless, Hawkeye nodded his head. "I understand." Hawkeye grabbed the Digivice cradle that attached to the belt loop and walked over to join Kaya and Unica. He noticed they were both holding something... "Oh? Did you two find something interesting?"

There were certain elements to Unica and Birdie's relationship that puzzled those fortunate enough to not been a part of it--namely, the reason why the young girl continued to show love and support for her partner even when the malicious bird proved on repeated occasions that she had a difficult time being civil. Aside from the fact that Birdie was her partner and, by that very notion, Unica knew that the two had some inseparable bond, there was also the fact that she believed whole-heartedly that Birdie had the capability of being kind. And with enough love, support, and patience, she thought that Birdie would change for the better. Wishful thinking? Perhaps. But that didn't stop her from holding out hope.
The charm, although a superficial representation of Birdie, was adorable and reminded Unica of her partner. Though she didn't have a cellphone to attach the accessory to, she had found a way to attach phone charms to her digivice. Currently, it supported a tiny plastic dango with adorable smiles on the front of each dumpling. The plan was to replace it with the itty bitty Biyomon. A Digimon would be more fitting for the digivice anyway. Kaya seemed to like the young tamer's idea, for she grabbed a Hakmon and announced that it was Hawkeye. Unica snorted and giggled before bobbing the Biyomon charm up and down, giving the illusion that it was flying through the air.
"Hi!" Unica said while stifling another giggle. "My name is Birdie and I want to be your friend! Tweet, tweet!" While not exactly the most accurate depiction of her partner, it was still fun to roleplay as a friendly version of the Biyomon. She made the little charm "fly" over to the Hawkmon charm before asking, "What's your name?" As she spoke, she did her best impression of Birdie. She pitched her voice to sound older and more mature while also making the end of each word sharp and accusatory. Though it definitely sounded like a child doing a poor imitation of an adult's voice, the tone she assumed was pretty spot on. If it wasn't for the giddy smile on her face, someone may have actually thought that Unica was upset about something.
Though the young tamer was having the time of her life, Birdie was not. She was struggling to bite her tongue, keep her temper, and mind her manners. The risk she ran by opening up to a near stranger, especially one who had viewed her as an enemy not even a half hour earlier, far outweighed Birdie's desire to ramble about how Digimon and humans alike couldn't be trusted and all deserved to perish. Extreme? Yes. And deep down, Birdie knew this, for she refused to spout her beliefs aloud... Not again. Even when Hawkeye pointed out that she had been alone when the duo first met her, Birdie remained silent. Things were far too complicated to explain in a such a simple conversation.
Ultimately, Hawkeye said that Birdie should always be able to make choices for herself, but that claim merely elicited another scoff from the Biyomon. The truth was that when she had first met Hawkeye and Kaya, she was alone because she had made the decision to abandon Unica. After getting into a life-or-death fight and not digivolving, she came to the conclusion that the digivice wasn't anything but a placebo. Tamers and digivices didn't give Digimon any more power, they were just there to make Digimon complacent. At least, that's what she thought at the time. It had been her choice to leave the seven-year-old alone in a strange world filled with monsters. It was her choice to flee the battlefield, leaving the young girl screaming and crying for Birdie not to leave.
Events largely out of Birdie's control had led them back together then tore them apart again. Their most recent reunion was Birdie's choice, for she had learned that she was wrong about Unica and the digivice. Out of desperation, she traveled all the way back to the human world in order to reunite with her tamer. But even then, she had little choice in how or when they returned. She couldn't just do what she wanted. She couldn't order Unica to return to the digital world with her because the child had demanded things of her first. Respect, patience, and kindness. So in the end, did Birdie really have a say in the matter? As long as her power was locked behind a tamer and a digivice, she didn't have a choice in anything. Any illusion of choice, power, or control over her life had since been shattered.
Having picked up on the message that Birdie didn't want to talk about it, Hawkeye respected her silence, grabbed a digivice cradle, and left the aisle. As he went, Birdie stopped and watched him go, a million thoughts racing through her head as he turned the corner and disappeared from sight. She continued to stare down the empty aisle for a long moment before heaving a heavy sigh and turning back to the cradles in front of her. She had felt this way before. Conflicting emotions. Heart aching. Mind reeling. And she hated it. Birdie clenched her hand into a fist before exhaling a long, slow breath and relaxing again.
At about the same time, Unica heard a familiar voice and turned to see Hawkeye approaching. "Look! I found a baby Birdie! Tweet, tweet!" she exclaimed while once again bobbing the charm to give the illusion that it was flying through the air.

Grabbing the Hawkmon charm and claiming it to be Hawkeye seemed to make Unica happy. The little girl then tried to mimic her own voice to sound like Birdie's, which was a pretty impressive impression, saying that she wanted to be Hawkeye's friend. Kaya laughed and decided to play along. "My name is Hawkeye, and I would love to be your friend, Birdie! Caw caw!" Kaya lowered her own voice to sound more like the Hawkmon in question, although it wasn't anywhere near as good of an impression as Unica's of Birdie.
The Hagurumon employee that was nearby at the register, however, was very confused by what these two human girls were doing with the phone charms. His eyes shifted back and forth as he had no idea what he could possibly do or say in response to this very odd situation.
Hawkeye was also equally as confused when he went back to join Kaya and Unica, and was greeted with Unica saying she found a baby Birdie. "And I found a baby Hawkeye! Caw caw!"
The Hawkmon could almost be seen having anime lines of despair on his head as he looked at the two phone charms. "Please tell me you aren't going to buy that thing."
Kaya huffed in response, what did this birdbrain know anyways? The preteen grabbed another Hawkmon charm from the shelf. "Just for that I'm gonna buy two of them!"
"Wonderful," Hawkeye sarcastically said, knowing that he wouldn't be able to talk Kaya out of it. "We should also buy this Digivice Cradle, it will help you be able to keep track of your digivice, Kaya."
"Oh hey, good idea Hawkeye," Kaya happily said as she took the cradle from him. "I'm going to go pay for our things real quick!"
While Kaya walked up to the register, Hawkeye stuck around with Unica, smirking to himself as he wondered what Birdie would think of that horrid phone charm. However, his stomach growled and interrupted him from his thoughts. He realized that breakfast was hours ago, and the bird Digimon was getting hungry. He desperately hoped that Unica didn't hear the sound...

Kaya's willingness to play along with Unica's shenanigans really helped the two tamers bond. Although it confused the Hagurumon employee and even puzzled Hawkeye as he rounded the corner, the girls' attempt to emulate their digital partners by playing with the charms was enough for them to have a good time. When the elder tamer jumped on the bandwagon and called her charm a "baby Hawkeye," Unica clasped her hands over her mouth and let out a giddy giggle. Her joyous demeanor wavered only a moment when the red bird asked his human not to buy the "baby Hawkeye" charm, but Kaya was quick to the punch. As if to spite him, she claimed that she'd by two instead.
Unica squealed with laughter through her fingers. "Me too!" she exclaimed while instantly whirling around and pulling out another chibi Biyomon. Hawkeye didn't seem all too pleased by the idea, but it didn't matter to Unica! She and Kaya were on the same wavelength and that was enough to keep her smiling. When Kaya and Hawkeye began talking about digivice cradles, Unica grew bored and continued to browse through the display of accessories, hoping to find some more items to buy. After all, money was no object to her, so as far as she was concerned, she could purchase everything in the store if she wanted! She grabbed a charm of a tiny pink D-3 digivice, a little Cutemon, and a Paomon.
As she began to look through the stickers, Hawkeye's stomach rumbled. The young child stopped what she was doing and glanced over her shoulder, silent for only a few second as she tried to figure out where exactly the noise had come from. Her reaction was almost instant. "Aww, are you hungry?" she asked, taking pity on the poor, starving bird in front of her. "Umm..." she mused as she glanced down at her outfit then at both her arms, seemingly looking for food that she might have on her. "I don't have anything to eat," she said with a hint of disappointment in her voice.
She gave Hawkeye just enough time to begin speaking, if he so chose to, but instantly began to bounce on the balls of her feet. "Oh, oh! I know! I know!" she exclaimed suddenly, interrupting anything that Hawkeye may have been in the middle of saying. "Mommy and me would get stuff to eat and pretzels and ice cream! Do you want a pretzel..." Her question trailed off as she tried to remember the red avian's name. She thought back to what Kaya had called him and what she had named the tiny charm. Then it hit her! "...Hawkeye?"

As humiliating as this is, I honestly cannot wait to see what Birdie has to say to Unica buying those two cutesy Biyomon toys, Hawkeye thought with a grin on his beak as Kaya went up to go pay for the things she was buying at this specific store, including the two Hawkmon charms. Even though Kaya was thirteen now, there were some child-like aspects that she wasn't gonna easily give up, it seemed.
Welp, Hawkeye just went through probably one of the most embarrassing things anyone could go through. Unica had indeed heard the Hawkmon's body signal its need for energy. His face gained a small tint of pink when she tried taking pity on him, asking if he was hungry. "Y-Yes, I am, but you do not need to worry. Kaya and I can go on down to the mall's food court and-"
The Hawkmon was immediately cut off by Unica suddenly having an idea of some sort. A small anime anger symbol appeared on his head. "It's not polite to interrupt someone, you know."
Apparently it was an idea of what to get Hawkeye to eat. It wasn't important enough to interrupt the small bird, but what could be done about that now? She asked if he wanted a pretzel before pausing for a brief moment. Hawkeye raised an eyebrow during the pause before Unica finally concluded... by actually guessing his name correctly!
The bird smiled at the young human, giving his version of a thumbs up. "Bingo, you got my name right!"
Once Kaya was done checking out (while having to explain to Hagurumon what she and Unica were doing) she walked back up to join Unica and Hawkeye, her items now seemingly installed either on the Digivice or in Kaya's backpack. "Alright, so what's the plan now Hawkeye? Should we still keep a close eye on them or should we look around for information more?"
"Hm... perhaps after lunch we could continue searching for RedMagnamon. There should be someone in the mall that knows at least something about it."
"Oh crap, I completely forgot about lunchtime... let's head on down to the food court then!"
"Let's."
"Wait, what about Unica and Birdie though? I still wanna keep a close eye on them."

It seemed that both Hawkeye and Unica had come to the same conclusion: to go to the mall's food court. However, before the Hawkmon could finish speaking, the young tamer quickly interrupted, wanting to give her input and be the first to suggest the idea aloud. Though the red avian explained that interrupting others was rude, Unica wasn't really paying attention. She was too preoccupied with trying to remember Hawkeye's name; and when she eventually did, she was praised for it. She had never been very good with names, and so her ability to recall Hawkeye's felt like cause for celebration. With a smile and a blush, she applauded for herself.
At about that time, Kaya had returned. She asked her partner what they ought to do next, and the Hawkmon explained that they should keep looking for the red Digimon... after getting some lunch. It sounded like a good idea to Unica, but it also felt like she wasn't part of the conversation. So instead of chiming in with her own thoughts on the matter, she instead kept quiet and eavesdropped as the two talked among themselves. After a few seconds, she turned to see Birdie making her way toward the group, a cream-colored wrist cradle in her claws.
Without any ceremony, the Biyomon walked directly to Unica then instantly stopped the moment she spotted all the accessories in the girl's arms. "Put 'em back. We're here for this," she held up the bracelet, "Not that junk."
The girl's smile was instantly replaced with a frown as she groaned and huffed in annoyance. "But Biiirdiiie-!"
"No buts," the pink Digimon said, her voice firm.
Instead of carefully returning all the charms and stickers, Unica instead pull the small pile down on a nearby shelf. She took an extra moment to admire and organize all of the accessories. Impatient, Birdie grabbed the girl's left wrist and began trying to attach the cradle to see if it would fit. Startled by the suddenness of it all, jolted and looked down at what her partner was doing. After deciding it wasn't important, she turned back to the pile of goodies. With her free hand, she grabbed the Cutemon charm and made it stand on the shelf by itself. She then grabbed one of the Biyomons and bounced it toward the Biyomon, as though the two were playing.
"Thank god," Birdie sighed after a moment of fiddling with the bracelet, "It fits."
Unica palmed the Biyomon charm and held it against her chest as she glanced back at her partner. "It feels funny," the girl mumbled as she bent her wrist to test how restricting it was. It didn't hurt and she was still able to move, it was just a strange sensation that she wasn't familiar with.
"You'll get used to it," the Biyomon retorted as she worked to take the cradle off.
