Another day, another dollar. Or, something like that. Where did that phrase even come from, actually?
Though, today wasn't really just an ordinary day. Today, was Asher's first day on set for a new drama! Which was pretty exciting, despite that enthusiasm not showing on his face! Instead, the redhead seemed plenty focused on reading a script, standing out of the way of any acting that was taking place. Nobody wanted to spend their time fumbling through the words when their time came to be in the spotlight!
Or, to be a minor character that didn't actually have a ton of lines. That would make it just that much more embarrassing, wouldn't it? Luckily, they seemed easy enough. The worst Asher would have to worry about was probably getting tongue-tied at some point. It had been a while since he'd needed to memorize lines! Especially for something that could actually matter to his career.
A part in a show was a part in a show, regardless of not being a main role. And after having taken a break from acting for a while, he needed to take this relatively seriously to get his foot back in the door properly. Would this be the chance to do that?
After several moments, the young man shrugged to himself before stepping out one of the nearby doors, pulling his phone from his pocket. Leaning against the wall, he'd send a few messages back and forth with others, before putting the device away and looking around.
Surely, other actors and actresses would be around, getting ready for their parts or just waiting for the opportunity to be called onto the set. Meanwhile, he knew he had a little bit of a wait before that was his chance. So, maybe it was a good time to try to make friends with some of his newly-dubbed coworkers, right? There was no way anything could go wrong with making new friends!
The question was, who stood out as someone that he could approach? Or, would he get lucky and be the person that someone else found interesting?

Two scenes. Six measly lines. And yet Reiko had already flubbed half of her scenes. And the director wasn't happy in the slightest. Asking Reiko what she was doing here if she couldn't even speak the damned language, ironically ranting at her in the language she supposedly couldn't understand. Reiko nodded and apologized two or three times, focusing intently on the director's beard. It was starting to go grey, and for some reason it reminded Reiko of powdered donuts. Eventually it ended with the director telling her that if it happened again, he might even let her keep the waitress uniform she had on, as she would likely need it in the future. She thanked him for his generosity and hid in the corner to look over the rest of her lines.
So now she was a little hungry, but didn't dare snack on set. Instead she sat on the floor and looked over her script. She had memorized her lines, but when on set she ended up using English by accident. Then she froze up and things went downhill from there. So she couldn't exactly rely on her memory just yet.
Which meant that right now she was off in the corner, covered in a gloomy aura as she quietly repeated her remaining lines over and over again like she was cursing someone. Probably wasn't the best look for her, but she really didn't care to think of any other way. This was her first role with actual lines in it since she came to Japan, and her first impression hadn't been the best one. So she had to at least pretend to care about that, right?
Still, a couple of minutes in she had already grown bored of reading her lines over and over again. She was sure she would get them right for her last scene. If not, then the term 'last scene' would be a little more appropriate that she would have probably liked.
But hey, at least she'd get a free waitress apron out of it.

While searching for a victim friend, there weren't too many choices that stood out. A teenage girl that looked agitated, a disheveled guy who was busy fussing with his outfit. The director, who may have actually eaten powdered donuts and forgotten to clean his beard. Most of the cast didn't seem too approachable at the moment. Nerves, perhaps?
Then again, the person his eyes landed on next didn't look too relaxed either. In fact, if it were possible, he was sure she'd have that strange, purple haze that surrounded distraught anime characters. But, this wasn't an anime. So, she definitely just looked upset. And it was little mystery as to why. While Asher didn't want to watch someone else's errors, it hadn't seemed to be a lucky run for the actress in the waitress outfit. Was she just anxious? First job? Or, something else entirely?
Mysteries didn't often solve themselves, and the redhead hadn't found another person that had any better opportunities for approach. So, it was time to meet the girl hiding in the corner! With one hand in his pocket, and the other on his script, the actor quietly made his way over to the woman. He almost wondered if she'd even notice when he slid against the wall, to sit next to her! Equally quietly, he held up a pack of gum near her, clearly offering the potentially soon-to-be-waitress a piece.
And for a moment, he'd wait to see if she accepted. Regardless of the answer, he'd pull one of his knees up, to lean on it, and give a small smile. Perhaps a giveaway that he'd been listening, or perhaps a bit of relief, the words he'd speak would be easy for her to understand. Soft, and most definitely in English.
"Do you want any help?"
What was he offering to help with? Asher wasn't quite sure, in full honesty! But, people didn't just sit in corners with doom-and-gloom auras if they were perfectly fine on their own! Not usually, at least! Would the young man be able to lift the cloud of distress, or would the stranger have to get used to wearing an apron for work every day?
Granted, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the second option, but it wouldn't be surprising if the actress disagreed with that sentiment!

Reiko was fully entranced in her mantra-like state that she didn't even notice that someone had approached her. He held out a stick of gum to the woman, and it took a few moments for her body to recognize his proximity as she thoughtlessly reached out and grabbed a piece and put it into her pocket, all-the-while softly repeating her lines out loud over and over again. She had grown quickly grown bored and was pretty sure she had them down now, but messing up again would have been frustrating for her and probably would have put her off for a while, angry directors and co-stars notwithstanding.
But at some point she realized that someone was sitting next to her, so she turned her head towards him. A red-haired young man, probably a little younger than she was. If there were introductions amongst the cast she didn't pay it any attention, so she didn't know his name. But she had a feeling he was familiar for some reason. He spoke in English, offering Reiko some sort of help. "No," She answered curtly and coldly, her face showing no sign of modesty or arrogance.
Well, perhaps that was a little too curt, even for Reiko. "I think I've got this down now. Probably. But thank you for your offer. And the gum." That she decidedly pocketed and didn't chew. She gave him another look. Yep. She definitely recognized him from somewhere. He was that... one boy from... that one show. Ironically, she didn't watch much television, so she was only vaguely aware of his existence. And she couldn't really place anything else he was in, either.
She gave him a cold stare for nearly a minute before realizing that perhaps introductions were in order. "I'm Reiko Su..." She paused for a brief moment then started over like she never spoke up in the first place. "Suzuki Reiko. But today you can call me Cafe Waitress Number 2. Pleased to meet you." It took her face a second to catch up with her words but her lips formed a small smile to match her greeting.

Somehow, the smile didn't waver. Asher had almost definitely picked the wrong person to try to start a conversation with. Still, he waited until she spoke a little more, before giving a small shrug. Unfortunately in the same boat as the brunette, if there had been any introductions, he certainly hadn't paid any attention to them! And, therefore, had no idea who he was talking to. Perhaps less observant than the woman, he wasn't quite sure if he recognized her from any shows, either! Maybe? Possibly.
Then again, if her current demeanor was anything like how she acted on stage, he'd probably recognize her in an instant. Her stare was almost frigid!
"Any time," he hummed, giving a small shrug, "if you change your mind on the help, let me know." Chances were? She wasn't going to change her mind any time soon! Or ever, for that matter.
At least, after a bit of awkward staring and silence, the woman would speak again. For a moment, the redhead had been debating if he should shuffle away and find some other person! Or, find a corner of his own to sulk in! This was a bit of a relief.
Shifting into a slightly more comfortable position, a name was finally revealed for the gloomy woman. "Pleased to meet you, too. Callum, Asher," the actor stated, with a slightly more friendly smile. Non-Japanese names sounded weird in the format used for introductions, he couldn't deny. "Today, I'm called," there was a pause, while he pulled up his script for a moment. "Excited Man One," he mumbled. Why was he excited? Asher actually hadn't paid that much attention.
Maybe, that was a sign he needed to read the script a bit more.
Whatever. Socialize. Relax! If even just a little! For both the sanity of himself and the person who was sitting in a purple cloud of grumpiness just moments before!
"Have you been into acting for very long?" Innocent enough question, right?

The young man's smile seemed to be irrevocably planted on his face, and Reiko had to marvel at his dedication. Most people's smiles tended to fade away ten seconds after speaking to her, so she supposed she should have to give him credit for that. "Thank you again, but I should be good now. I think," Perhaps that last part was a little unnecessary, but Reiko couldn't help but add that last bit of honesty.
The young man's name was Asher Callum, and after hearing him introduce himself she was a little glad she used a Japanese name over here. Thompson Claire sounded like some kind of Texan oil man or something. Well howdy-doo to you as well, mistah Callum! The name's Thompson Claire IV, and might I say it's a mighty fine pleasure to meet you, boy! Her mind wandered into a deep Texan drawl, though her inner tomfoolery wasn't the least bit portrayed on her face. In fact it be even stranger as she continue to stare blankly at the young man while she created this little persona.
It didn't last long, however, and back in reality Reiko nodded to the young man, as if he just said something, snapping back in time to hear the young man's question. He might have said some other stuff before that, so she felt a little guilty. She figured she could give a relatively honest answer. Besides, she knew that she needed to work on her socializing, and a fellow foreigner would be a great opportunity to start.
"About four years now," She answered. "I grew up around Hollywood, didn't have any plans after high school, so I figured I'd give it a shot and got a little luckier than most."
There was a little more to it than that, but she figured she should maybe save the life story for someone other than the sweet young man she had just met.

Well, he had tried his best. Even if the actress didn't seem to instill much confidence with adding 'I think' to the end of her sentence! There was no helping a person who didn't want help, after all! There was a small hum of acknowledgement, but not much else he could provide.
Though, if only he could take a look into the little world that Reiko held in her head right now! There would have been plenty to respond to, with a little bit of craziness, after all! Instead, her short silence left him wondering if his presence was less than ideal. Or, maybe she was mocking the horrible fate of having a non-Japanese name. Little would he know, it almost struck close to reality! Except, that she was pretty much making fun of her own name.
Four years of acting was nothing to brush off, though! Especially considering how disheartening not getting roles could be! So, the redhead definitely had to give the woman some credit there. "I grew up near there, too," the actor stated, glad to find some common ground beyond their current employer. While maybe it wouldn't catch much surprise if they were both in America, that they were both working in Japan made it less common! If only they had been on the same set in America. Then it would have been a really fun coincidence! "Do you miss Hollywood, ever?"
Maybe she wouldn't get so lucky to easily gloss over her life story, though! Unless she really wanted to! Considering the follow up question had to be, "what brought you to Japan?" Surely, everyone had their reasons, right? And, having an obviously Japanese name was not reason enough to justify being here! Unless, it was literally just that she wanted to be with people of similar namesake. Which was also a... quirky, but totally acceptable reason!
Either way, it seemed they had time to kill before either of them needed to be on camera, and that seemed plenty good reason for Asher to try to keep the conversation going! Unless the giant cloud of gloom came back, that was. That thing was thick enough to suffocate part of the room!

Two Americans on the set of a Japanese drama was certainly a coincidence, especially since other than her blue eyes, nothing really stood out as “Westerner” for the woman. Reiko shrugged when Asher asked her if she missed it at all. “I don’t really miss the city or the people so much as I miss the places in it. There was this one pizza place nearby where my mom, um... resided...” A homeless shelter was perhaps a little too much information for the stranger. He didn’t seem like a particularly bad guy, and she wanted to at least try a normal conversation. But the more details she gave out, the more questions he’d have to ask her, and answering questions all the time would get annoying. “Whenever I got paid for a gig I’d celebrate and treat her there. Haven’t really found a place here that matches that's felt the same.” She shifted around a bit after talking. It wasn’t like it was some deep dark secret, and she’d come to terms with her past, for the most part, but talking to people about her life to people other than her mother just felt awkward for the young woman, so she tended to avoid. But it wasn’t like talking to her mother was a possibility anymore, and even if Reiko believed in talking to headstones, her mother’s grave was quite a few miles away.
Then he continued to ask her about what she expected. What had brought her to Japan. She opened her mouth to say, “personal reasons”, but held her tongue back and sighed. There shouldn’t be a reason for her to be so secretive, after all. “My mom was born here. She wanted to be a star out in L.A. but didn’t quite get lucky enough to make it. She always wanted to come back, but was never able to, so I figured I’d take a look and see for myself what it was like.” Plus, she felt a little guilty about not being able to get her body buried in Japan. But that was a whole legal issue that was out of her league, financially-speaking.
Carrying a conversation was getting tiring, but Reiko thought she was acing it. The answering questions portion of this conversation is complete, fellow human being that is normal just like I am! Now social protocols dictate that I ask you similar questions in return! Totally acing it. “So... what about you... dude?” Did she already forget this guy’s name? Could be.

There was a thoughtful hum, while the young man nodded at Reiko's thoughts toward their old city. "That makes sense." Did Asher agree? It was hard to say. Granted, a good pizza place was always a blessing to find! While the term 'resided' may have come off as a little weird, Asher was no detective, and perhaps just not keen enough to pick up on the hesitancy! It was a busy day, okay, give him a break!
The inner monologue of Reiko wasn't wrong, though. It would have opened up a whole new box of annoying questions, if he had found out homelessness was a part of the girl's life!
The takeaway from this conversation would surely be that Asher was both dense, and now craved pizza. "Maybe sometime, you'll find a better pizza place." Except, she probably never would. Because the flavor of the pizza was probably directly related to the delicious paycheck involved!
He was, however, nosy enough to find out what would bring Reiko out here! And, the answer made plenty of sense! If Asher followed that logic, and his mom was no longer among the living, would that mean he should be in Alaska? That thought made him fairly glad that this logic did not apply to him! Granted, he would never say that. It would be incredibly insensitive on a lot of levels! "Hopefully, you like it here then!" Ah, yes, a much more acceptable response. Good.
Hearing the term 'dude' certainly raised an eyebrow, but for now the redhead would let it slide. Either she had definitely forgotten his name, or she was just very lax with how she called people! Asher didn't know and, frankly, didn't care all that much. Names were overrated anyway, right?
And now, it was time for his own omission of details! Because, after such a touching story, he was not about to say half of the reason his family moved to Japan was to get away from his mom! "My dad was offered a job in Shibuya," duh, because the majority of the forum took place in Shibuya, "I wanted a fresh start, so it all worked out." That was the lame variant, but whatever. Nobody said he needed a fancy story for his reasons of being here! "I thought I wanted to quit acting when I got here, but I guess I changed my mind!" And, thus far, it wasn't that bad of an experience! Despite not hitting a main role right out the gate, but that was to be expected, really. Anyone would be crazy to think otherwise! For now, minor roles! In the future? Who knew?
"Japan's more interesting than Hollywood, anyway." Undoubtedly! His life was far more interesting now! Some of which, being reasons he obviously couldn't mention to the actress! "Even if the pizza isn't as good," he added, partially jokingly. Good thing life wasn't only about pizza!

She listened in to his little story... slightly distracted as she tried to remember his name. He didn't have a Japanese name, she could remember that much. "Your dad, I see..." She nodded as he spoke. It started with an "A". Allen, or Ashley... she didn't think so. "Glad things worked out, then..." It was one of those preppy-sounding names... "Well, if you like it, I don't see a point in doing anything else. And a new country is definitely a change of pace..." Asher! That was it! Whew... glad she was able to get away with forgetting his name for a little bit...
Thankfully, he didn't pick up on her hesitation, and Reiko let out a small sigh of relief. Which meant either didn't care or was polite enough not to ask. So there was that. Or he could be oblivious. Not that Reiko would know anything about that. "If I find a good place, I'll let you know. You can find out for yourself," Reiko answered him. Was this an invitation to eat together? Definitely not, but Reiko wasn't quite aware of what it sounded like.
Well... contacting him wasn't possible without his contact info. So... reached into her bag and pulled out her phone. She turned it on only to give an uncertain glare as she checked the battery life. She pursed her lips as she reached further into her bag for her charger, only to grab hold of something unfamiliar to her. She pulled out a strange-looking device, something a few people in Shibuya knew about, yet poor Reiko was still left clueless on the matter.
For Reiko, it was just some strange gadget that kept popping up on her doorstep every morning she left her apartment. No matter how often she would throw it away, it always seemed to appear the next morning. It was more than a little unsettling, perhaps, but it didn't seem to do much of anything, so Reiko wasn't too concerned. Still, she should probably dispose of it here. She had no idea how it could have possibly gotten into her bag, but whatever this device was, it didn't belong to Reiko, and she didn't care enough to go looking for the original owner.
Getting up for a second, she moved over towards the nearest trash can and dropped the small device into the can, then moved back over towards her gloomy little corner, though considerably less-gloomy now that she had company. She held up her phone and said, "Give me your number and I'll let you know if I find a place. And you can do the same," She wasn't the most social person out there, but her contacts list was embarrassingly short ever since moving out to Japan.

It was for the best that Asher didn't know that his new "friend" had forgotten his name. Let alone was trying to think of preppy names to remember it! His name wasn't preppy, darn it! It was...
Okay, yeah, it was pretty preppy. Blame his mom for that, alright?
Instead, there was just content nodding at her being glad it worked out. Did it, though? They were kind of sitting in a corner, both with scraps-for-roles. Could be worse, he supposed. Could always be no role, after all. Then what would he tell people? 'Yeah, places don't even want me as a no-name extra'? Man, that'd be lame!
"Sounds like plan to me," he hummed, while waiting for the girl to pull out her phone. And then waited for her to pull out her, uh, alarmingly familiar looking device. But, before he could say anything, he watched the actress get up and trash it! What? "Wh-" The confusion on his face was through the roof. Just like the confusion in his head. There was a small point to the trash, while he re-assessed his brain. Did she know what it was? Was she just mad at her partner and decided to chuck it?
Asher could totally empathize with wanting to fling the device out the window on many occasion. But that did not mean someone should!
"Why'd you throw that out?" Did Reiko realize the value of what had just been dropped in a garbage? Jeez. Some people!
While trying not to display any distress to the confusion, the young man looked at the phone that was held up. At least she hadn't thrown that away too, he supposed. What happened when someone tossed valuable plastics, anyway? Did it just rot in a trash pile? Probably. Poor whatever-was-attached-to-it. At least the redhead was good at bouncing back.
Flashing a smile, the actor reached out to put his number into the phone. "Do you just want to send me a text, and I'll save the number?" In theory, it sounded easier than trading phones again. But, if the woman didn't have texting capabilities (who didn't, in this day and age, really?), he'd have to provide his phone in turn!
And, to keep the conversation rolling, more questions! "Do you have any jobs, outside of acting?" Or, did being background waitresses pay all her bills? Was that a rude question? It only occurred after he spoke! Not that it should, but some people got offended over the littlest of things! The redhead couldn't help it! He liked to make sure the silences were filled to the best of his ability!

Reiko found Asher's reaction more than a little odd, but then she nodded an apology, and even went so far as to scoop the device out of the trash. She forgot that she should probably dispose of it in the recyclables. Japan was much more of a stickler on that part, she remembered. "Sorry. I'll take care of it properly later..."
Still... she should probably give him some sort of explanation, right? Even though she didn't really want to. "There are a couple of stray cats near my apartment. They don't allow pets, but I've fed them once or twice and they've kind of stuck around ever since, and they'll leave stuff at my doorstep every now and then. Dead rats, fish bones, that kind of stuff. And one time it was this thing..." She held up the strange-looking toy. "I assume it's just stuff they dug out of the trash, but every time I threw it away, it would just appear on my doorstep the next morning..."
She stopped talking and got lost in thought for a moment. "Well... They might not be strays. But I don't know why anyone would make their cats wear gloves, but... hmm..." She spoke aloud, though it was more just her random musings rather than to Asher in particular. Then again, Reiko thought that animals wearing clothing looked more sad than cute, so what did she know?
But stories about animals with weird clothing aside, she gave Asher a quick and simple message.
test Reiko was hoping that Asher's phone was on vibrate or silent. That would just be awkward if a loud jingle come up when others on set were trying to act. She sure as hell didn't want to show up in a video where she becomes the focus of a star having a meltdown on set.
But regardless of that, when Asher asked about what other jobs she had, she simply shrugged. "Not right now. I don't need the money just yet," Which was true to an extent. She had a modicum of success in the States, but thanks to her mother and childhood in general she developed a penchant for spending as little money as possible. So long as she didn't partake of the finer things in life, she could last a little while longer.
Still, having a little extra spending money on the side wouldn't hurt, and she could spend a little less time getting rejected from every audition ever. "Why do you ask? Do you know any good places hiring?"

Maybe Asher's reaction should have been more subtle. But could anyone that actually understood the devices blame him? The confusion didn't really die as Reiko fished the item from the trash, but at least the expression would subside. Cats? He'd give several small nods to prove he was listening to the story of feeding these felines, feeling eerily similar to the time he took in a totally normal stray and semi-deformed cat. Which had turned out to, in fact, not be a totally normal stray and semi-deformed cat at all!
Is this how the kid that worked with him felt, when he was talking about his own cat? Man, he almost pitied the guy now.
"Gloves?"
Well, that more or less confirmed it. There were most definitely cats of digital nature that wore gloves! Was that more, or less, obvious than his own feline 'friend'? Whatever. He wasn't going to spoil it for her. Not that the actress would believe him if he tried to explain it, anyway.
"Who would put gloves on cats?" Did gloves actually even fit on normal cats?
After giving a shrug, the redhead would follow up with, "I don't know, cats are kind of rude usually. If they're giving you something, maybe it's actually important?" How could he find a way to convince someone that a weird hunk of plastic that a stray dropped was of any value? What happened if someone threw away their 'destiny' anyway?
Would the cats go crazy and get angry?
He needed to focus more on the subjects, rather than the images of angry digi-cats wearing gloves. As luck would have it, the obnoxious vibrations of his phone would be plenty to bring him back to earth. And to prevent Reiko from being the star of a meltdown video on the net! Pulling his phone up, the young man would glance at it, before quickly saving the contact and putting the device away again. "Don't forget, pizza," he reminded. Not that anyone should forget the conversation that soon anyway! "Or, if you get bored." Was that an invite to just text casually?
Sure, but Asher didn't expect the woman to ever actually message him. Unless she really did find a pizza place.
Or maybe to text about job postings.
"Not really," he admitted, with a small snort, "unless you'd like to wear a maid outfit." Then, there was a pause. Remember your social skills, Asher. And definitely pay attention to any way that sentence could be taken! "-In a maid café. I work in a maid café." Clarification was key! Especially in avoiding any sorts of problems with whatever acting's equivalent of "HR" was. "I was just asking out of curiosity though! You know, conversation and things." Hopefully that made sense! It probably wasn't too surprising that Asher was just asking for the sake of asking! After all, he had approached the actress with zero conversation plans!

Something about Asher seemed off as she explained her little story about the cats. She guessed that he just wasn't interested in cats or something. Was he more of a dog person, then? Or was he like Reiko, who were more into turtles? Though Asher did raise an interesting question. What kind of person would put gloves on cats?
"Hmmm... I guess it's getting colder. Maybe they just wanted to keep their paws warm?" She shrugged, not really thinking any further about the subject. "Or they were recently de-clawed, and they're just accessorizing their recovery? Either way, I've seen cats with worse outfits..." The thousand-yard stare of the cats from pictures her middle and high school friends posted online... What kind of cruel, twisted person puts clothes on a cat? She was ashamed to have once called those people classmates...
"Well... I tried looking it up online, and I couldn't find anything like it. I suppose it might be a nice keepsake, even if it's not particularly valuable. And if I get the opportunity to sell it one day, then maybe it'll be worth keeping around..." She pondered this for a second, then moved on. If it would happen, it would happen. No point in dreaming about what-if's.
Asher had pulled out his phone, then put it away soon after. Looks like things were set up, then.
Huh... did Reiko just make a friend?
Neat.
And when the conversation topic moved onto to jobs, Reiko suddenly let out an ever-so-slight snicker as her face brightened up for a quick second. The maid outfit comment just came out of nowhere and came as a shock. Then she started imagining Asher in an impractical, over-the-top sexy french maid outfit, and... well... there came the snicker.
The misunderstanding was cleared up, not that Reiko was offended in the least. Work was work, after all. Besides, Reiko thought she could pull off a maid outfit. "A maid cafe... Hmm... Interesting... maybe I'll stop by and apply one day..." She had never been in one before, and had always wanted to check it out due to morbid curiosity than anything else. Why not make a little money on the side?
