It was supposed to be a quiet night, and for the most part it was. The cicadas weren't, sure, but their droning drowned out most other things that might have disrupted the night. The steady cacophony was ironically peaceful, at least for people who could adapt to it and tune it out. Even they, however, if they were awake as late as 23:30 local time, must have noticed when the bugs started one of their signature grand crescendos.
On a clear and windless night there wasn't much to drown out the bugs' calls as they became more and more insistent. The leaves and trees of the dark forest sure weren't helping to absorb the sound either, since they were just providing homes for the insects as well as bouncing the sound around to create something of an echo within. Even outside the woods, however, people in their own homes might have been disturbed by the wave of sound that crashed upon them in all directions from its epicenter within the woods. Practically every resident in the west of the ward had the forest behind their building or property, and so very few were safe.
Just as the dissonant symphony reached its fever pitch, the sky turned a brilliant blue for the length of a lightning strike because of a phenomenon quite similar, causing the night to turn to day. The event was obviously deep within the trees which concealed its details, but whatever that flash had been certainly cut off the cicadas. It obviously wasn't literal lightning, given both the lack of rain and the lack of a single visible cloud to obscure a nearly full moon. The only other certainty about the event certain was that it wasn't going to quiet the nosy, noisy insects for long. They were back to their steady droning a few seconds later.
Digimon might have experienced this oddity a bit differently from how a human would have. Unlike humans, digimon in the local area would start to experience a nagging sensation in the back of their minds. Most of them knew exactly what it was, too, and usually it was inconsequential. Perhaps in response to this event, though, they might give it a little more consideration. It was that feeling that another digital life form was near them.

Data and Rush were quickly woken from their sleep by the nagging feeling in the back of their minds. They could feel that something wasn't right out in the woods, and this warranted investigation.
"Hana, wake up." Data whispered, gently nudging his human partner with a gear.
"Wha-? What's going on?" Hana groggily responded, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. "Is something wrong, Data?"
"Something isn't right. It feels like there's something unfriendly outside that I think we should investigate. If it's a Digimon, we don't want it causing trouble." Data explained, and Rush nodded in agreement.
"Okay, give me a minute to get ready then." Hana replied, now fully awake. Data and Rush quietly went into the hallway so that Hana could have the privacy to change into proper investigating clothes. When the two rookies went back in, Hana was fully dressed in her usual outfit, backpack and a flashlight at the ready. Ready to head out, the trio climbed out of Hana's window, and headed towards the woods to investigate.

No doubt that as a longtime resident of Tokyo that Hanako was well familiar with the legends of Shibuki Forest. All sorts of supernatural folktales surrounded it, and while most weren't well-known outside the city they were pervasive to the locals. The general theme of it all boiled down to ghost stories ranging from silly to sinister, and most rational modern people didn't really believe in it anyway. Still, if there was anywhere on Earth that those things could come true, this creepy forest was it. Every sound could make someone jump if they were either unwary or overly so, and with a moon so bright there were shadows galore.
Owls hooted. Snakes darted. Hares bounded. It wasn't going to be easy to distinguish one digital living thing from a zoo of indigenous ones, but that sixth sense of one digimon for another might have helped Hana's partners know where to go at least in a general sense.
The problem for them was that whomever or whatever they were after, it didn't seem eager to introduce itself. Whenever it seemed like the group was getting closer the presence darted away again. That kept on for a very long while until the presence finally quit running, though that didn't mean it turned and said hi.
It was the flashlight. It was so easy for it to see someone coming and where they were looking. All the creature had to do was evade and hide either in vegetation, behind cover, or just in shadow, of which all were plentiful.
There was a point when a pair of eyes shined bright when the moonlight reflected off them just right. They practically shimmered for a split second before their owners darted off again. The pair of bright purple orbs was only visible long enough for a person to blink; hopefully no one did. The creature vanished again as soon as it was visible, but now it was indisputably very, very close.

As the trio journeyed through the woods, They couldn't help but feel unnerved, as if they were being watched. Both digimon had situated themselves on opposite sides of Hana, ready to protect her at a moment's notice.
"Oh, this feels like a horror movie." Data muttered to himself, feeling a bit jumpy.
"What was that, Data?" Hana asked.
"Nothing. Just talking to myself." The Hagurumon replied. "Just keep your eyes peeled. This thing could be anywhere."
As they continued looking, Data caught a brief glimpse of purple eyes reflecting the moonlight, before the figure vanished almost immediately. "Hana, turn off your flashlight. Whatever this thing is, it knows we're here and has the gall to be playing games with us."
As Hana quickly shut her flashlight off, Data and Rush made sure to scan the surrounding woods. Now that they know their target is close by, they'll be ready to keep their partner safe. Whatever it is, it won't get past these two Digimon without a fight.

...Three. The creature in the darkness suffered the same low-light problems as Hana and company, only for it this was no matter. It shut its eyes; they weren't too much help just now anyway. It had other ways of sensing the trio it was stalking. Three minds in space... but I only sense two digimon. When it opened its eyes again it was as blind to the forest itself as Hana was. The only unnatural light had gone out.
It's not them, something else concluded, I don't think so. Probably not a human. Probably not digimon with her who she knows. Something else is calling.
Were they called, too?
Crack! If they hadn't already spotted their stalker, that would have been what did it. "Gyuh!" was the first verbal noise the stalker had made out loud as it fell. Its source was at Hana's 11 o'clock, about fifteen meters out. It had also started a little under ten meters above, though that distance was falling as a branch fell to the Earth, followed swiftly by the thing that had been standing on it. In the darkness it couldn't tell its perch was too fragile, but it saved itself from gravity during its fall by grabbing a second, stronger branch after falling about halfway down. As it dangled there still by one arm, it didn't look very desperate. It knew it was safe and could mostly relax.
In this position, it became clear that the eyes Data had spotted belonged to a digimon. Its purple body blended well against the night, but there was no hiding for it now. A Psychemon held itself up over the trio while it peered down at them with a curiously tilted head.

Crack! At the sound of the tree branch snapping, the trio immediately turned in the direction of the noise. Hana reactivated her flashlight as she scanned the area. As she scanned upwards, the flashlight's beam came across the Psychemon hanging from a tree branch.
"Are you okay up there? Do you want some help?" Hana called out to the hanging digimon. She turned to Rush and said to him, "Why don't you go up and try to help him, Rush?"
"Okay, Mama." Rush happily replied. The Keramon floated up to the dangling Psychemon and held his hands out towards the unknown Digimon in order to keep him from falling. "Rush will help. Keep new friend from falling."
"Could he be the one we're looking for, Hana?" Data whispered to the Tamer. "I was worried we were looking for a dangerous Digimon, but I don't know if this is the one we're looking for."
"Yeah, I'm not sure either. Maybe they're just lost?" Hana theorized. "I guess we'll just have to see what they do."

The hanging Psychemon watched carefully but didn't answer any of the questions thrown to them, at least not at first. They noticed the Keramon rushing beneath them and helpfully offering a safe catch, but by this point it was looking like there was no need. Even one arm was enough for the arboreal digimon to keep itself steady. Good thing, too, because just when it looked like the Psychemon had finally opened up their mouth to speak, the free hand placed itself on the side of the creature's head. Psychemon suddenly shut its eyes tight and turned its head away from Hana, Data, and Rush. They weren't ignoring the trio; with the beam of light on Psychemon's face it was apparent this was more like some symptom of discomfort, like a really bad headache. It took a violent shake of the head for Psychemon to clear their head enough to actually speak in any intelligible way. "We're... we're fine. We can get down." The voice that came out was decidedly masculine but also decidedly young, like it had only just began to get deeper. He went on to hastily correct himself, "I mean, I can get down."
He went on to demonstrate that by swinging back a little, then forward, then letting go and letting gravity do the rest of the work. Psychemon landed in between Rush and Data and successfully stuck the landing, too. "...What are you doing out here?" Psychemon asked Hana and Data that with an inquisitive tilt of the head. The tone behind the question was sincerely innocent and curious. But when Psychemon's eyes started to faintly glow again, something happened... to Rush and Data. If they weren't highly mentally resistant just then, the pair of them would feel some cuts and scratches on their bodies. It wasn't mechanical damage, no cutting or blunt force or elemental power. No, they would just begin to feel pain without an apparent source. Rush and Data might even have seen actual injuries upon their bodies but not anything that could have caused them. And Hana? The only thing she could have seen, if anything was the reactions of her digimon. She was not a victim of the illusion, and therefore she was not privy to it.
All Hana could have seen was Psychemon continuing to make polite eye contact, as if he were innocently continuing the conversation. Psychemon attacked Rush and Data with Psyclaw. Psyclaw: Psychemon attempts to use psychic influence to convince an opponent that invisible claws are scratching at their body. The affected opponent can even see illusory wounds on their body, and the pain is realistic enough that this ability deals damage. -Psychic Specialist (passive): Psychemon has honed her mental skills to a very high level at the cost of such being the only thing she's great at in combat. Her abilities are all slightly harder to resist (functioning like a small accuracy boost), and they are completely unaffected by opposing abilities which specifically resist or immunize mental effects.

Rush let out a yelp and leaped backwards. He didn't understand what was going on, so his head darted around in order to try and figure out why he felt like he was being scratched. the Keramon whimpered as he darted behind Hana, hiding behind her as he hugged his mother figure for comfort. Hana shut off her flashlight before reaching back and petting Rush's head to try and comfort the scared rookie.
On the other hand, Data was mentally stronger than Rush and not affected quite as badly by the psychic attack. It still bothered him, but not nearly as much as it did Rush. The Hagurumon could feel scratches over his metal body, but there was no sign of any injuries that would actually cause him pain. Data barely managed to see the faint glow in the Psychemon's eyes, and narrowed his eyes at the other Digimon.
"Now, that wasn't very nice." Data said. His voice was calm, but there was a hidden edge to his words that indicated that he wasn't happy with the Psychemon. However, he would give the Psychemon a chance to explain themselves before Data did anything.

For a good long while, Psychemon didn't respond to Data's scolding... in fact, he didn't really give any indication that he had even noticed. He continued to stare blankly ahead at Hanako. "...Human?" Psychemon would extend an arm out toward her slowly, cautiously, like he wasn't quite sure what to make of Hana. There seemed to be some internal debate going on concerning whether it was a good idea to step forward and attempt to touch her. "You're... real." In the end he never made the move but he continued leaning forward toward Hana with the arm out for a good solid while.
The arm only dropped after the Psychemon blinked and looked around himself. Now he just appeared confused. "Wait. How did you-" He turned and peered where Rush had been before Psychemon attacked him, then at Rush's current position trembling behind his Tamer. He looked between the two points more than once, obviously fixated on something in particular. "How did you move that fast?" There was a clear difference between this Psychemon and the one ten seconds prior just in his body language alone. Psychemon was acting more expressive now than he just had been, as opposed to a still and focused state he had been in before. If Data had noticed the glow in Psychemon's eyes just then, there was a chance that he also noticed they were now dimmer.
"Is something wrong?" Psychemon was still talking to Rush as he knelt down a little and held out a hand again, this time palm-up. It was more an offer than a probe. "Don't be scared." This was the moment when Rush should have been scared, because he would start to experience the same influence as just before. Some invisible, unblockable force was trying to hack and tear away at Rush's body. Data, too, would have felt the illusory intrusion gnawing at him as well, a feeling which seemed to recede after he had fended it off but was now trying to come back stronger and more insistent. When these illusory attacks came back round was also the same time the psychic digimon's eyes radiated a little light once again.

When they felt the illusory attack resume, the two brothers had very different reactions. Rush started freaking out, letting out a loud screech as he rolled around on the ground before curling up into a whimpering ball. Hana didn't understand what was going on and was essentially frozen where she stood, not knowing what to do to help the panicking Keramon.
Data, on the other hand, reacted not with fear but with anger. He glared at the Psychemon and said, "Okay, I was willing to give you a chance to explain yourself before, but now my generosity has officially run out. I don't know what your problem is, buddy, but I'm not going to just stand hear and watch you continue torturing my brother. If you won't stop of your own volition, then I'll just have to make you stop."
As he spoke, Data's voice was radiating tranquil fury. He summoned a pair of gears, and used his Gear Roller attack to chuck them at the Psychemon. "No one hurts my brother and gets away with it." Moves used: Fool Out: Rush emits an unbearable discord that prevents foes in a 10m radius from attacking for 1 posts. 3 turn cooldown. Doesn't affect higher level Digimon. 0/3 Gear Rollers: Data launches a pair of gears at the opponent. Deals a light amount of damage, 0 post cooldown.

Psychemon was in no condition to react to hear Data's threat. He was too busy trying to cover his ears to protect himself from Rush's panicked wailing. To his dismay, it didn't matter anyway; the psychic digimon could hear the blasted screech almost equally well, so pervasive the sound was. The pink digimon squeezed his head between his paws and grimaced. In this state, he was wide open to the gear's counter attack.
Bam! Bam! One after another each gear nailed Psychemon square in the forehead, then in the chin since he had lifted his head in recoil. It didn't knock the psychic flat, but he stumbled and made distance between himself and the others. Rush would also notice that the combo attack jarred the pink digimon's concentration; the pain and images of his prior 'wounds' didn't just disappear, but the intrusion in the little brother's psyche withdrew.
As he stumbled Psychemon fell back, which might have seemed fitting except that Data probably knew he hadn't hit Psychemon that hard. It was solid to be sure, but his opponent had made it look like he would quickly recover from it right up until he didn't. It also didn't seem quite appropriate that Psychemon went on to curl up into the fetal position from there, and yet he did. He was still squeezing his head. As he rocked a little in place he looked rather pathetic as he begged softly, "Stop, please stop. It's hurting." Even more confusing, by his wording his concern was not for himself. "It's hurting them. Stop it."
They didn't get to hear the female voice reply to the speaker, D, I swear that's not me! I'm not trying to control you, but... This made the previously squinted eyes burst open. ...something's controlling me.
"Just make it stop!"
D, hang on! Psychemon felt like his head was being cut up, but for him that was normal. There was a long-term resident in there who had been living there a fair while. What felt so wrong in this moment was that his mind was being divided now not in halves but in... thirds.
It was a blessing in disguise for him that he could not strike back, his offensive data all scrambled from that scream. It did something to the third party, loosened its hold, or perhaps they did so voluntarily; what use was this vessel to them if it would not fight? The respite was what Psychemon needed to push back against the intruder in her own mind. So that's what that feels like, huh? D, it's... it's about me. Not you. I think if you revert-
The feminine entity didn't get the chance to finish her thought even at the speed of thought. The digimon, still in the same position, shrieked almost as disturbingly as Rush as the light of digivolution enveloped him. This light seemed to expel itself from his body and store itself in a digivice on the ground beside the twins' opponent, and as it did his true nature was revealed. It wasn't some wild digimon here to cause havoc (or, at least, not anymore). This was when Hana, Data, and Rush laid eyes upon the human who was wielding the spirit of a Psychemon.
He didn't look any more comfortable in this state, but his body at least became a little more relaxed (or, 'limp' might be a more fitting word). The reversion to a human body obviously improved his state, at least marginally. He was young, and small even for his age of barely entering the teenage years. In this state he appeared much less threatening, that was for sure.
But before the illuminating flash of digivolution completely dissipated, the observers might have caught the silhouette of a completely different creature in the very far distance. It was clearly neither human nor Psychemon nor, going by its height, any other rookie digimon. But when the light faded, so did the silhouette.
Psychemon was halted from attacking by Fool Out.Psychemon was struck by Gear Rollers.

After knocking the Psychemon back, Data was prepared to move in and continue attacking nut paused when he saw the Psychemon curl up into the fetal position and start begging... something to stop hurting them. Was Psychemon... being controlled by something? It would be a sobering moment for Data, if it turned out he'd attacked an innocent digimon being forced to fight against their will.
But it turned out his thought was not quite accurate, as the Psychemon was revealed to actually be a Spirit User, specifically a young boy. the Hagurumon slowly floated over towards the boy, while using one of his gear hands to try and cover the boy's digivice so that the Spirit User wouldn't be able to grab it. "I'm beginning to think there's something going on here that I'm missing. You... weren't in control of your own actions earlier, were you?"
Back with Hana and Rush, Rush dated back into the air as the psychic assault ended, and ducked behind Hana's back in fright. The poor Keramon really didn't know what was going on, and it terrified the young digimon.

OOC: Begin For Glory combat. All prior damage stands.
The boy formerly in digimon skin did not make an attempt to reclaim his digivice from the Hagurumon. Smart idea on Data's part; the machine was still in his arm's reach, but the kid looked too shaken to move. "I-I'm not. I mean, I wasn't. Am I me again?" The pathetic thing did not sit up, but he did roll over to lay flat on his back and hold his own human hand in front of his face, relieved that it looked like a familiar limb again. The sight of it made his breathing no less deep, but at least it was a bit slower than the frantic gasps from just earlier. "Psychemon... promised she would never do that again. She promised my mind was mine, not hers- Shut up!" Whoever he was talking to wasn't with Hana, since the boy didn't make eye contact with them for that last part. "Please, I need to be alone for a minute. Please."
There were several seconds of awkward silence before the boy was convinced he was 'alone,' which was particularly odd because he was not and he obviously knew it. Something definitely changed, though. His expression became a bit more straight and lucid, his eyes wandering around less than they had been a moment ago. It was like he finally had the attention span he needed to be present in the moment. "I'm sorry. I didn't want to hurt you. I knew it. I saw it. I just couldn't..." The boy was still on the ground by this point, but now he was somewhat upright on his knees with his head inclined, a repentant posture. "The spirit said something was calling to her out here. She said that it was like she was 'compelled.'" Another detail Hana might have noticed: the boy's Japanese wasn't as good after he had told someone to 'shut up.' He thought about his words longer and pronounced some wrong but still got his point across. "I... I think I trust her. She wouldn't hurt you, and she wouldn't make you hurt me. But something is compelling her to... compel me."
That was all the cordial conversation Data was going to get out of the kid. This was the moment when the screen of the digivice flashed a bright pink luminous enough to light the forest like the noon sun for a flash. A force that Data could not see but could definitely feel repelled his gear from the digivice with a strong push. In the same moment, Diego's eyes state abruptly died. Behind him, in his shadow that was barely distinguishable in the moonlight, manifested what most normal humans could only call... a ghost. The semi-transparent apparition of a Lekismon stared down at the boy as he unblinkingly swiped his digivice back. When his hand touched it he shrieked as if in pain, "There's two of them-!" before he lost the battle for his own free will yet again.
No one was fast enough to prevent the spirit of Psychemon from forcing itself upon Diego to assume her own form, not to keep her from jumping back a solid several feet to make distance again. The shadow of the spectral Lekismon still stood in his shadow, glaring at Hana and her digimon with an unexplained but palpable disdain. It was intuitive that this apparition was what separated the D-Tector from Gear's hand. All the moons on her body glowed as brightly as the one above her, but it wasn't that form which moved to attack.
Psychemon slowly raised two hands, each one pointed its fingertips at a different twin while her eyes looked at neither of them. Data's respite from attack wore off. The sensation of an incorporeal blitz of scratches once again pounded on the gates of the gear digimon's mind, demanding that he share the same pain as his brother. Rush continued to experience the same assault, momentarily broken but back in with a renewed vigor. Something demanded that these digimon hurt. It wasn't explicitly clear what role Psychemon had in causing these mental assaults, and yet they knew. She wanted them to know. Somewhere under her breath, a young but not childlike female voice whispered from the same mouth that used to speak like a male teen, "I'm scared."

"I'm sorry it has to be this way, then. I guess there's no choice in this situation." Data sadly said to the Psychemon, as he felt the psychic clawscontinue to rake away at him. "I'll try to avoid hurting you too much, kid. Hana, Rush, let's just get this over with." Rush heeded his brother's call as he darted over to his brother, not hesitating to move when he felt the scratching again. With a heartbreaking look on her face, Hana raised her digivice for their next step. "Execute... DNA Digivolution."Both brothers were silent as they fused into their DNA Champion form, Shadow the ShadowGrademon. The dark knight sent an apologetic look to the Psychemon. While the knight was known to go overboard when trying to protect those he cares about, it was painfully obvious that even he didn't want to fight the child being controlled against their will by the spirits of the Psychemon and Lekismon. "May Yggdrasil have mercy on your souls." Shadow said in a melancholic tone. He could still feel the illusory claws scratching away at him, but it was more bearable now that he was at Champion level. He dashed towards the Psychemon, swords drawn. "Cross Blade."
Hana could only watch with tears streaming down her face as she watched them fight.

Psychemon, or whatever consciousness was inside her body now, was no fool. At all costs, she would not be struck. Fortunately the digivolution itself served as something of a telegraph for an attack she knew she shouldn't be on the business end of. Shadowgrademon did successfully close the distance she had just created, but by throwing herself backwards prone, Psychemon thought she could dive under the attack. Yet her dodge was mistimed, too early. Shadowgrademon would have found it easy to adjust his blade's path enough to clip the rookie in the abdomen. "Gyaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!" The psychic digimon's shriek of immense pain deepened in pitch slightly as it dipped off, almost like a different voice entirely. The way she writhed she had obviously just received a grievous wound from a higher-leveled digimon, and now she was on her back to boot. Already the position appeared unsalvageable for her, but some time during her inhuman shrieking and squirming she became enveloped in the same light of digivolution as Shadowgrademon no doubt knew. Psychemon was transforming into the same creature as the ghostly avatar that shadowed her earlier.
"You..." she cursed, "I finally manifest again, and you... cut me - my new body." Unfortunately, she carried the exact same severity of her injury with her through her digivolution. Lekismon, the moon digimon, rolled backwards to get her feet underneath her, but she still had to brace herself against a thick tree to stay standing while one arm pressed on her wound. "Why do you interfere?"
There was more than pain in her harsh tone. There was also a fiery rage in it. Shadowgrademon would feel this rage, and not just because he would be dead ten times over if looks alone could kill. The psychic's fear and anger could not be contained, and Shadowgrademon may even have been feeling that in the confines of its own mind. If he couldn't resist, he would feel all the same pain of a champion's sword cutting through a rookie's torso in his very own body. Her mind was sharing its pain with him! Psychemon was hit by Cross Blade.Psychemon digivolved to human spirit Lekismon.
