Ditching the dork was proving to be a bit harder than she had anticipated. But thankfully, Chloe's tiny body actually came in handy for once, as she was able to slip through a small crowd fairly easily and get some distance between her and her stepbrother. For some reason, he was insistent about the two of them walking to school together. She didn't know if it was just his way of reaching out to her, or if he was just trying to be one of those creepy stepbrothers or whatever, though Chloe didn't think that was the case. Most likely, the dude was just so lonely the only chance he had at making a friend his age was someone that was literally forced to live with him.
But just because they were in similar situations, Chloe wasn't interested in being some dude's emotional support. She was strong enough to deal with things on her own, and it wasn't her problem if Kazuki, the aforementioned stepbrother, was too dependent on other people. Hanging out with others was cool if you were bored or something, but actually needing other people to feel good? That was just pathetic.
Though, Chloe couldn't exactly throw stones when it came to dependency issues. Case in point, she was already feeling on edge enough as it was. She hadn't gotten the chance to be alone recently, and she sure as hell wasn't gonna do it when her mom or her new family was around. But now that she had finally given her stepbrother the slip, she made her way into the nearest restroom to attend to her vices and make her preparations.
She had been feeling particularly on edge recently, and it was just the kind of relief that she needed. She didn't dare expose her habit to her family, and it was hard for her do so in public without causing a scene. Tokyo was just too damned crowded for Chloe's liking. Not long after Chloe flushed her cigarette butt down the toilet, she began to change out of her school uniform into something into something a little more casual and a lot less conformist. School uniforms were only there to suppress children's budding individuality and prepare them for a live of corporate servitude, after all. That, and there were was probably some kind of gigantic corrupt textile company out there lobbying for it, or something.
Not long after Chloe finished changing and got ready to leave the restroom, an elderly woman entered, her nose crinkled almost immediately as she caught the scent of the lingering tobacco smoke. Couldn't really be helped, after all. Wasn't like there was an open window or anything. The elderly lady looked around for a few seconds, noting Chloe as the only other occupant. The elderly lady gave Chloe a look of surprise and disgust, as the young woman just stared back at her with an intense gaze, as if to say, "What are you gonna do about it?", before calmly making her exit, back into the hustle and bustle of Shibuya station, an overly crowded, the sounds of countless footsteps all around her becoming unbearable for her. Chloe absolutely loathed large crowds.
She wasn't sure why. But the thought of all of these people around her, all heading their own directions to do their own things that all ended up in utter mediocrity just made her sublimely uncomfortable. Sometimes, just the fact that there were so many people around her made her feel like she was going to be crushed by presence of so many. Her chest began to ache as she felt her heart give of a million beats a minute. She could feel herself shivering despite feeling like it was seventy thousand degrees, and she felt like she was gonna fall over any second now.
After freezing for what felt like an eternity, Chloe turned back around and headed back into the restroom, leaning on the nearest sink as she got her bearings about her. She wasn't sure if she was going to throw up or not, but after a couple minutes of intense glaring at the inside of the sink as if it had just slapped her, Chloe felt like she was going to be fine. Letting out a sigh of relief, she began to splash cold water onto her face, as she began to focus on what the hell had been going on with her recently.
The elderly lady from before had walked up beside her, apparently washing her hands after taking care of her business. She looked over to Chloe with mild concern in her eyes, but she said nothing and left shortly after drying her hands. At least someone was willing to leave her alone. Small favors, she supposed.
Chloe hadn't been keeping track of how long she'd been mindlessly splashing cold water onto her face, just enjoying the feeling of the cold water against her warm skin. But it must have been a good amount of time, seeing the black splotches running down under her eyes. "God fucking damn it..." She muttered under her breath, doing her best to clean up the mess she had thoughtlessly put upon herself.
She had been having anxiety attacks, or panic attacks, or whatever the fuck they were called ever since she had moved to this god-forsaken country. Her mother decided to live with and marry some half-Japanese guy she met online or something. And apparently because those with genitalia that neither Chloe nor her mother possessed were capable of it, Chloe and her mother had to move, with Chloe leaving behind all her school, her friends, and half of her family tree all to move to a country she barely knew anything about, save for what little she spoke whenever she had to spend time with her grandparents. Everything she cared about was gone. Hell, she didn't even get to keep her last name.
Chloe felt trapped. And helpless. And so, so angry. And she wanted nothing more than to break free from this tiny, crowded island and towards a place where she could make her own decisions for once. She only had less than two years of school remaining, but she wasn't sure if she could hold out that long, at least not without blowing her brains out or at the very least setting something on fire.
And very soon Chloe would be granted her wish. But with every new path open to her, so too does the burdens of travel.
