Things had settled down after the big battle and the subsequent celebration, and Mukuroyukihime's recovery was already coming along nicely. Despite being outmatched all to hell, she managed to survive, and no thanks to her, everyone dear to her survived as well. In fact, the Falcomon had been completely ineffectual during that entire battle. She didn't even serve as a distraction, let alone a protector. As creepy as it was, watching Lady Nanami sleep peacefully brought peace to the Falcomon as well, but looking at all the scrapes and bruises that littered her body was much less so. And Mukuroyukihime had sworn never to let her come to harm.
And yet, Lady Nanami still trusted her. Still relied on her. However, Lady Nanami had her... intellectual deficiencies. And she was surrounded by so many other capable allies. Polas was leagues stronger than the Falcomon. Mukuroyukihime couldn't even put a scratch on his right-hand mon, the Chakmon, let alone the Blizzarmon himself. There was the literal royalty in Princess Omen, who seemed like she could be as strong as she wanted to be. And the same could be true for Lady Nanami's partners, like Lady Cream. And even the brown one was far more capable at protecting Lady Nanami. And she made it clear that it was the case.
It seemed like Lady Nanami was diving headfirst into more and more dangerous situations. Situations that required stronger, more capable comrades. Comrades that weren't just a mere Rookie. For as much as the Falcomon trained, and as passionate as she was about improving herself... she was just a mere child that couldn't Digivolve. And that was tantamount to dead weight in this new world that Lady Nanami was charging into. Perhaps it was a little reckless, but Mukuroyukihime had made her choice. Even in the dead of night, she moved through their little campsite without a sound. Only the moonlight was there to light her way, but it was more than enough for the Falcomon.
It was time for her to leave. There wouldn't possibly be a good way to say goodbye, and she knew that if Lady Nanami were awake, she would simply tell her that it didn't matter how strong she was, that she would still want Mu-kun to be by her side. And the feeling of elation would be more than enough to convince the Falcomon to stay. But that was also the reason why she had to leave. This was all for Lady Nanami. Mukuroyukihime knew herself a great deal, and she couldn't be happy if she were simply a tagalong on Lady Nanami's future journeys. And if Lady Nanami would rely on her to keep her safe... the Falcomon knew she would inevitably fail. For as highly as she thought of the little human girl, she wasn't invincible. In fact, for all the little girl's bluster, she was one of the most vulnerable, frail creatures the Falcomon had ever laid eyes on.
To Mukuroyukihime, Lady Nanami was like a precious relic to be cherished and protected. But the Falcomon was no longer up to the task, despite how badly she wanted to be. She didn't leave a note. She didn't shed a tear.
She just left.

It was nights like these that Mocha appreciated the most. Things had died down, everyone was asleep, and she was left to her own devices. So what did the Lopmon do when no one was looking? Honestly, not a whole lot. She simply found a comfortable spot to sit, stared up at whatever moon looked the prettiest, and would occasionally hum or sing a tune. She wasn't the biggest music person in the world, and she was never good at remembering lyrics. But even Mocha would get a song stuck in her head. She couldn't quite place tonight's tune, however, and it had been driving her crazy. Out in the desolate North, she hadn't been listening to any songs, either. Maybe this was a tune she had heard in a past life? Maybe she's ask Cream later. She could remember the past stuff better than Mocha.
She had been enjoying her solitude until her ears began to tremble. She didn't really hear them so much as just sense their presence, though. And it wasn't very powerful. Probably no more than a Rookie. One of Polas's cronies going out to take a dump, or something? Wait... this signal in particular began to feel a little more familiar than that. And for some reason she began to feel irritated. Was this...?
"What are you doing, sneaking around so late?" She asked, annoyed, before turning around to face, as she expected, the damned bird. All that talk of Ninja-training this, and Ninja-training that, and she still couldn't even hide her presence in the middle of the night. Fucking useless bird.
"Forgive me, I did not mean to disturb..." She answered, not nearly as hostile as Mocha expected. "I just heard you singing and... and... you have a nice voice."
Mocha wasn't sure how to respond to that. She couldn't remember a single time the damned bird had ever complimented her. "...Yeah, I know... thanks," Was all she could say. And even further to her surprise, the Falcomon moved beside her.
"May I sit here for a little while...?" Her voice was a little hesitant.
Mocha shrugged. "It's not like I own anything here,"
Mu-kun nodded, and slowly sat down, looking up at the night sky. "Do you... do this often?" She asked without looking away.
"It's colder at night, and I prefer the atmosphere. And everything's more quiet," Mocha answered. Small talk wasn't her thing, let alone with the Falcomon that always seemed to have it in for her.
"I see..." It seemed like she had something on her mind, but Mocha didn't care enough to pry. Besides, the damned bird wasn't one for keeping her emotions bottled up. It would only be a matter of time before she would spit it out. "Growing up, I never learned much about the stars. Most of my training took place at night, so there was little leisure time to do so. I do not know any of the constellations... or what I should be looking out for."
"Me neither," Mocha admitted. "I just look at whatever draws my eyes the most. I've never seen the point of using stars to play connect-the-dots..."
"I see..." She repeated, with slightly more amused tone. There was a long pause where neither of them wanted to break it. "I suppose, as unprofessional as we are at this, it does not make the sky any less beautiful."
"I guess so," Mocha curtly responded. This was just getting unsettling at this point. This was by far the longest conversation they've had without one insulting the other. But the Lopmon was getting impatient at this point. Fuck subtlety. "You never answered me earlier. What are you doing out here? If you're awake, shouldn't you be creepily watching Nanami sleep like usual?" She... probably could have worded that better.
"No... I..." The damned bird didn't seem annoyed by what Mocha said. She instead let out a long sigh, as if gathering her courage for something. "I had not planned to say anything, but I suppose you are the only person in the world that I could tell..." She let out a dry chuckle. "But I suppose you could say that I'm giving you reason to rejoice, brown one." She stood up and looked down towards the Lopmon. "After tonight, I will be departing here. And I will be accompanying Lady Nanami no longer."
"Right..." Mocha let out a brief chuckle. She should be so lucky. The obsessed stalker of a Falcomon stuck to Nanami like... well... an obsessed stalker. But her face didn't show any signs of jest, and the damned bird didn't have a funny bone in her body.
...What the hell?

Truth be told, Mukuroyukihime didn't know why she was telling the brown one all of this. Maybe she couldn't truly leave without saying anything. Maybe she was just looking for validation. Or maybe... maybe she was looking for a reason to stay. After all, if Mocha, probably the one person that couldn't care less whether she stayed or left, told her that what she was doing was a mistake, then maybe the Falcomon could live with that. That she could stay by Lady Nanami's side, and even if she wouldn't be able to protect her like she wanted to... they could still be close. And she could continue smiling with everyone else.
That... must be it. So if the brown one, of all people, told her to stay, then Mukuroyukihime would decide to stay. Though that wasn't very likely.
The Lopmon gave her an odd look for a good second or two, then shook her head in disbelief before giving the Falcomon an irritated glance. "Damned birdbrain. Just go back to the camp and sleep off your dumb idea!"
And there it was. In her own frustrating way, Mocha had told Mukuroyukihime to stay. Even as someone the Falcomon genuinely disliked didn't want her to go. She could just go back and... be happy. Right?
So then why was she not elated? The brown one had said what Mukuroyukihime wanted to hear! Did she want... something else? "I cannot do that. There is little point in staying by Lady Nanami's side as her protector if I am not up to the task. Rather, there are those far better suited for it. I would only continue to be a burden!" She couldn't help but raise her voice a bit, but she caught herself from getting too loud. The campsite was still nearby. But the Lopmon didn't seem too fazed. Rather, she just gave a dismissive shrug.
"So? We've already been dealing with Nanami. What's a little extra dead weight?" She gave her a cocky little grin that nearly set the Falcomon ablaze.
"Do not call Lady Nanami dead weight! She is the one responsible for whatever powers someone as lowly as yourself can attain!" But despite the Falcomon's fury, the Lopmon's grin grew ever wider.
"You're such an idiot..." She replied as if the Falcomon hadn't said anything. "If you like someone, you should just stay with them. It's as simple as that! If you're a shitty bodyguard, then just be a better friend to make up for it! We both know that they're both the same thing to that idiot human!"
It was certainly a good solution. There wasn't any reason that she couldn't be "Mukuroyukihime, Lady Nanami's friend" instead of being "Lady Nanami's protector". But still... The Lopmon was overlooking something.
"As I thought... I do not think that you and I could ever be friends..." She said with a trembling voice. She gave the brown one a fierce glare as she held back the tears welling up in her large, golden eyes. "You and Lady Nanami alike... All you do is follow your every whim. You simply do things because you 'feel like it'!" She clenched and unclenched her hands in frustration.
"But... that is not something that I can do so easily! That is not who I am!" She drew a feathery dagger and held it up to her own chest. "I am a warrior! I have trained my entire life to be prepared for battles! Fighting is the only thing I have ever desired! And yet..." She pressed the tip of the dagger into her chest just a bit. "And yet I am still just a mere child! And no matter how hard I train, no matter how much I desire it... I cannot attain the strength that you and Lady Cream possess! In the short time I have known you all, you have attained enough strength that would take me an entire lifetime to attain!"
The brown one just looked back at her curiously before answering. "So that's what this is all about? You're just jealous of me and Cream?" She let out a suppressed laugh while shaking her head. "I knew you were useless, but I didn't think you were that pathetic!"
Mukuroyukihime couldn't even restrain herself at that point. She rushed over towards the Lopmon, delivering a kick that sent the much smaller Lopmon onto her back. The brown one let out a surprised gasp as she took a second to grasp the situation. So the Falcomon took that moment to kneel down and press her arm down on the Lopmon's chest and press her dagger at the brown bunny's throat. But Mukuroyukihime wasn't going to hurt her. Doing so could endanger Lady Nanami. And the both of them knew it.
Mocha didn't resist. Her eyes just coldly gazed into Mukuroyukihime's own as the Falcomon watched her own tears fall onto the Lopmon's face. "You... you have no idea what it is like... to try so hard... to fight to the last byte... and yet always fail when it matters the most!" She cried out between sobs. "And how heartbreaking it is to see the person you care about the most... casually fly beyond your reach, and then go even higher!" Mukuroyukihime didn't bother holding in the rest of her tears at this point. She simply slumped over besides the Lopmon and let it all out. All the while the Lopmon remained on the ground, staying silent until Mukuroyukihime had finished shedding her tears. "So... what should I do...?"
"You're right... I don't understand whatever the hell you're going on about," the Lopmon finally stated. She sat up and started picking her nose. "All this stupid talking about other people flying or something. So just keep jumping off a cliff until you can fly for yourself or whatever..." Her finger seemed to have found the culprit as she dug out a booger and flicked it away, surprisingly not towards Mukuroyukihime's direction for once.
And maybe it was because she was so emotionally fragile at this point, but the Falcomon couldn't help but burst out in laughter. "That is... most definitely the worst advice I have ever heard..." She said as she stood up and offered her hand towards the Lopmon.
"What the hell were you expecting?" Mocha responded, maybe a little to defensively she grasped her hand and pulled herself up, brushing the white sand off of her large ears. "You think I got the perfect pep-talk in my back pocket or something? Go think for yourself. Fuckin' useless bird..."
"I think... that I will do so..." She relented with a sigh.
"I'm going back to the campsite to get some sleep," Mocha stated, her expression dead serious. "You comin' with?"
There was another long pause before Mukuroyukihime answered. "I am afraid not. Forgive me." She gave a short bow towards the Lopmon, who just let out a grunt.
"Welp. See you around, you damned bi..." She stopped herself and shook her head. "Take care, Mukuroyukihime."
The Falcomon stood there stunned, wide-eyed for a minute before laughing once more. "I was indeed right. You and I could never be friends, Mocha," She repeated before taking her leave. As she wandered her way back, the Lopmon couldn't help but wonder if she could have handled things a little more delicately. Granted, the answer to that question was almost always a resounding "yes", Mocha wondered if there were anything she could have done. "Well... shit," Mocha muttered as she made it back to the campsite, on her own. The rest were still sleeping, save for a slightly stirring Nanami. "Well... shit..."
"Mocha...?" The little girl murmured, half asleep.
"Stupid Nanami... you shouldn't be staying up so late," She whispered back.
"Mmm... had to go... toilet..." She looked around for a bit. "Is Mu-kun around here? I thought I heard you two arguing again earlier..."
A deep knot formed in the Lopmon's stomach. Was this... guilt? Whatever it was, Mocha did her best to shrug it off. "We were just talking about the usual stuff. But she said she had to take care of some business. Probably going off to do some ninja bullshit or whatever. Either that or just take a huge dump. So... go back to sleep. I'm sure she'll be back soon..."
"Mmmkay..." And almost immediately she was back asleep.
Huh. For some reason, lying made the knots in her stomach even worse. Go figure. It was just uncomfortable enough that she had a feeling she wasn't going to be getting any sleep tonight, after all. But she shouldn't stop Nanami from getting a little more rest. The sun wasn't going to rise for a few more, peaceful hours. It was the least Mocha could offer the little girl before she was going to put her through one hell of a morning.
