MPC 95A – Cloister of Trials
I would like posts for this MPC please.
It had been a whirlwind of a morning for Rory the Coronamon. He had wanted to get as much sleep as he could for the trials ahead, but could rest no longer when his mother Skye the Gatomon entered his room at dawn and opened his curtains.
“Time to wake up, Rory.” she said gently to him. “Make sure to do some stretches to get ready. Gem and I will have your breakfast ready in half an hour.”
Rory couldn’t help but feel grateful to these words. Yeah, he didn’t expect to face these trials alone, but having it confirmed for him on the day made him feel better. “Thanks, mom. I’ll do what I can.” he answered. Skye then left him alone as Rory practiced his early morning exercises. Not at all did he want to fail today on account of not waking up properly.
And thankfully he had assistance today too. From his mother’s friends, Hickory the Chuumon and Jorge the Shoutmon. While they had mostly drifted away from his family for the past few years, he was glad they were here for him today.
“How are you two going lately anyway?” Rory asked them while they did their early morning routine.
“We’re going around the digital world, doing what we can to keep the peace.” Jorge answered. “So far this alliance between AEGIS, KIZNA and the 7/71st has been good for the time being, but, we always have to keep a lookout.”
“Yeah, of course.” Rory agreed. After he had stretched the night pains from his body, it was then time for breakfast. The bell rang through the house, and Rory ran to the dining room, delighted to see something on the scale of a feast prepared. Fish fillets, bacon, eggs, toast, and all his favourite condiments.
“Eat only what you need, Rory, we don’t want you to lose because of indigestion.” Skye advised him.
“Of course. Thanks, mom.” Rory replied to her, and cheerfully ate his fill, making sure to stop when he felt satisfied, patting his white furred belly. “Okay, I’m ready.” he said, setting down his cutlery.
“Then let’s go to the proving ground.” Skye said, and led him to where he would determine his worth as a member of the 7/71st. Along the way, Rory reflected on the significance of this. Yes, the old 7/71st was long gone and mostly forgotten, but, he knew that from his mother Skye and his mentor Owen that they were meaning to re-form their group as a force of good for the digital world, he very dearly wanted to prove himself worthy of it. Eventually, he arrived at the open parkland outside of Rosewood that had been reserved for this occasion. It was here that Rory awaited his mentor, and what task he had for him.

I would like bits for Owen’s part in this MPC please.
Owen the Gaomon had awoken long before the time he was meant to, unable to fall back to sleep. Frankly the task of the day ahead was something he hadn’t anticipated at all for a while, but, as time went on, the blue canine digimon had seen the need for it. Yes, the digital world was filling up with humans, and yes there was growing resentment against that. So therefore it stood to reason that there should be a force of digimon without human partners that would train themselves up to assist them in any way possible.
For a while it had just been him, Skye and a few others from time to time. But now it seemed that Skye’s Coronamon son Rory wanted to join them. And this is where it grew complicated.
Owen didn’t doubt Rory’s skills or constitution that he wanted the best for the world. His parents were Skye and Shoutmon after all, two digimon the Gaomon had a lot of respect for. Yet, there were still lingering doubts. Honestly, at times Rory could be as passionate as Bellamy in falling for crushes instead of his duties. Yet still, the Coronamon was determined and had passed every test Owen had laid in front of him so far.
And that laid the last hurdle that Owen could reasonably lay ahead of him. There was no way Owen could allow a new digimon into the 7/71st if they were not able to evolve to Champion. And thus that would be Rory’s final test. A trial by combat. Owen had pondered on the method for quite a while, but settled on this as the most ethical. He would not hurt anyone other than Rory, eliminating the possibility of him evolving to protect another. He would stop if Rory insisted, allowing the chance for him to learn from his lessons. And he would do this in the presence of his parents, so they would both be witness to his success or failure and be best suited to prepare him for the next time in case of failure.
Owen ate his breakfast with his son Bezil. His Gumdramon son had been preparing Rory for his trial so far, and Owen was eager to hear his report.
“Well, dad, he’s got a lot of spirit, and he doesn’t give up until he physically runs out of options.” Bezil said. “He got a bit of a shock at the start when he realized his fire attacks were ineffective against me, but he then realized his disadvantage and used everything on the field that he could to find another weakness of mine that he could exploit.”
Owen nodded in thanks of this information, then looked back at his son. “And how did these spars conclude?”
“He tried his best tactically, but, just couldn’t get through my tail hammer defense.” Bezil admitted. “He gave up after about 4 or 5 attempts… did I do wrong with that, dad? Should I have given him a chance?”
Owen considered his reply. On the one hand, if Bezil had given Rory a fake advantage, yes it would’ve boosted his confidence, but, on the other hand, that would not be something a 7/71st digimon should rely on.
“No, mate, you did the right thing.” Owen assured Bezil, patting his shoulder. “To do right by Rory, we need to back him into a corner like that. All he knows at the moment is comfort and leisure. He’ll need to evolve to pass any further. And he won’t learn to evolve by you going easy on him.”
Bezil smiled at this. “Okay, dad. So, are you ready for all this?”
“Yeah, mate, I am.” Owen said, putting on his khaki tunic and buckling his belt. “Let’s test him out now.”
With that, they too ventured out onto the designated proving grounds.

The arena in which Rory would prove himself was pretty much as the Coronamon expected. A closed off area of Rosewood park, duly hired for the day for their purpose of course. He stood and waited for the spectators to gather. He smiled as he saw his own family sit down to cheer him on. His mother Skye, his father Shoutmon and his human partner Adrian. His brothers Luneth and Gem, and various friends they had earned along the way.
Rory’s temperament shook a little when he saw further attendees take their places to observe the spar. People and digimon he knew only by name. The most imposing of which was Sten. Rory knew little about him, only that he was Owen’s father, the WereGarurumon having survived the apocalypse that had crushed the old Digital World Republic. Yet here he was now, and thankfully still a force for good. Owen had told him he would be in attendance, given his status as a senior officer, and would be the best qualified to determine how good he would be for the 7/71st.
Furthermore there was a delegation from AEGIS to take observation as well. Thankfully Rory already knew Colin, Luke and Bellamy, and he didn’t mind them being present either. At least a little bit.
Eventually, all seemed to be in attendance. All that was left was his opponent, and Owen did not delay. The Coronamon watched with apprehension as the blue canine digimon approached. To his astonishment, Owen paused to first take off his boxing gloves, then removed his tunic, only then putting his glove weapons back on.
“Uh… Mr. Owen, what’s the meaning of that?” Rory asked, unable to not sound timid.
“I would rather not have my uniform be burned, that’s all.” Owen replied, simply. Rory nodded, trying not to shudder further. He had seen Owen’s fighting prowess several times before, but never concentrated completely against him like this. “Now then. Do you understand the conditions of this battle, Rory?”
The Coronamon paused, then nodded, forcing a smile. “Yeah. I kick your ass, I get into the 7/71st, right?”
“Crudely put, but yes, that’s right.” Owen answered. “You fight on a satisfactory level, you’re in. And you have your mother and my father to judge that.”
Rory gulped a little. He knew for one thing that his mother Skye would never use her influence to give him an unfair advantage. Well… at the very least, he could rely on her to make a fair judgement, and that it would be respected, but, he’d have to prove himself to that point in the first place for that to happen.
And the fact that Sten was here too to also pass judgement - he knew more about the history of combat than his parents and Owen combined. And yet that also suited quite well. If Rory passed in his eyes, that would be all the more worthwhile.
The Coronamon gave a sigh to compose himself, then prepared a stance. “Well, Mr. Owen, if you’re ready to start, I am too.” he said. His mentor gave an approving nod and matched his stance.
“Very well, Rory, let’s see what you have.” the Gaomon replied. And soon after, their spar would begin.

It took a little while for Owen to prepare himself for this trial. The Gaomon never liked the use of violence to prove a point, and he never did so with his family, so this was a new situation for him. If this had been Bezil, Jill or Bu wanting to prove themselves, he would have turned them on an obstacle quest within the forests around Rosewood. But this was not so. This was Rory – the son of Skye and Shoutmon, who had so far proven himself worthy of such a trial, and thus the only honorable thing for Owen to do was to give him the trial that honor demanded.
At first Owen had hoped that Rory would exclude himself from qualification by failing the preliminary tasks, but, as it turned out, Rory had performed with excellence. He had learned all he could about survival and had proven himself in doing so. Owen had to chuckle at that. Even if Rory mostly conducted himself as a fun-loving digimon that wanted to date more than fight, he always did what was requested, and when questioned he matched his mother’s expression as though to say “What’s next?”
Well then. This was next. The combat trial that all digimon of the 7/71st had to go through. And Owen was ready for him.
”What will your first move be, Rory?” Owen thought as he stood prepared to face his opponent. ”Come on, you and I both know your advantage over me. You can use ranged attacks better than I can. But of course, you need to use tactics to make it actually effective.”
Owen’s yellow eyes locked with Rory’s blue eyes. The Gaomon was thankful that Rory seemed to be taking this seriously. Rory didn’t seem to think there was an easy route to victory here. And furthermore, with Rory’s parents and brothers watching, he would not make a blunder as his first move.
And thus Rory struck first. He raised a paw, gathered fire energy in it, then with a roar of ”Fiery Fastball!” he hurled the musical note-shaped fireball at Owen.
”Good boy, nice starting move.” Owen thought. He had no choice but to evade, given he had no intention of experiencing what it was like to be on the receiving end of such an attack. But this situation called for so much more than that. Rory had launched this attack at him in battle, what did he mean by that and how did he intend to follow it up?
As expected, Owen was able to sidestep Rory’s opening attack, then he closed in to make a strike of his own. If Rory had nothing, well, Owen would make him pay for it.
But Rory did in fact have something.
As Owen closed in his punch, Rory responded with a punch of his own.
”Hammer Cross!”
”CoroKnuckle!”
Their fists connected with an almighty crack. Owen’s strike sent Rory flying backwards, but Rory’s strike set Owen’s fist on fire. The Gaomon could do nothing else to protect himself but throw his boxing glove off as it caught fire, smouldering and shrivelling to nothing.
Owen couldn’t help but be impressed by this. “Not a bad opening at all there, mate.” he said, flexing his arms to prepare for the next onslaught. “Let’s see how you hold up next.”
Rory nodded, a little nervous, but glad that he had made such a good impression for his first attack.

Rory took his first hit against Owen as a triumph. His fire attack had burned the Gaomon’s boxing glove to cinders, forcing him to duel with his bare paws, and to the Coronamon’s delight, it made him more cautious in countering his blows. Owen evaded more than he blocked, and Rory used his training to seize the advantage. He also noted that Owen instinctively avoided wherever Rory launched fire, and he pressed that advantage home too, using his fire abilities to pin Owen down to where he wanted. However, every time he was about to launch a finishing blow, Owen demonstrated an agility that Rory had never seen before. Eventually it grew to the point of frustration where Rory thought he had Owen ‘on the ropes’ so to say, where he saw a quick combo possibility that would give him victory, but the blue canine digimon moved faster than Rory had ever seen to evade the fiery finishing blows that were aimed at him. And eventually, Owen stood over him, standing on a tree strump in their battlefield. “You’ve conducted yourself well so far, Rory.” Owen said, giving a smile that the Coronamon disliked. “However, if you truly want to count yourself among the 7/71st, you’re going to have to do better than that.”Rory was confused, and a little hurt to hear that. “W-what do you mean by that, Mr. Owen?” he asked, trying not to sound nervous, but failing. “I’ve fought you with all I have… and that’s not enough?”Owen shook his head. “No. It’s not. However the 7/71st ran things in the past, I run things differently now. And I do not allow digimon unable to evolve beyond child level to join our ranks.”Rory felt like he had been punched in the gut by these words. Before he could voice his outrage, though, Owen presented his next challenge. He revealed an object that had been stored in the back of his bandana. To Rory’s horror, he recognized it as a digimental. “Digiarmor Energize!” Owen cried, and the beast digimon became engulfed by light. He grew over a foot in height, becoming equipped with gold plated armor, resembling a digimon that looked half beast, half human. “Gaomon armor digivolve to…!” eventually the light faded and Owen’s new form stood before him. “...RaiGaogamon.” the digimon finished. Rory backed a step, nervous about facing a digimon that was at a higher level than him. Owen noticed this, looking at him sternly. “Remember, Rory, you can surrender at any time and none of us will think any less of you.”Rory looked behind him, at his family and friends that were watching this. Sure, they won’t think any less of him, but Rory’s opinion of himself? No. He couldn’t back down. Not from here. “So what, you got a weird egg from somewhere and ended up like that?” Rory asked, readying his battle stance. Keep balance, ready to move in any direction, counter anything that came toward him. “I don’t see any grounds for surrender in what you just did, Mr. Owen.”The RaiGaogamon gave a grin in response to that. “Well then. Let’s continue.” he crossed his arms in front of him, blue sparks of electric energy flashing before him. “You judged your way of combat right in my child form, I don’t have many good ranged attacks there. However, in this form…”Rory’s jaw dropped when he realized what was about to happen. And what happened next was too fast for him to respond to. He tried to sidestep the attack, but Owen turned to adjust his aim, and with a snarl of ”Mighty Surge!” a thunderbolt cracked from Owen that struck Rory directly. Even if he raised his arm to defend, the strike was overwhelmingly painful. Rory was knocked down like a sack of potatoes. Thankfully Owen didn’t make any further moves while he got back up, but he still loomed over him, more threatening than ever. “What will you do now, Rory?” Owen asked, speaking in a serious tone. “You’re down a level, and you know what sort of pain I can give to you. Most digimon would surrender here, but, most digimon I will not admit into the 7/71st.”Rory panted as he struggled to regain his stance. Yeah, that lightning attack hurt him good, but he wouldn’t surrender. Not here. Rory turned to look at his family. He saw his mother Skye egging him on quietly. His brothers Luneth and Gem cheering him. His father Shoutmon, his partner Adrian and their friends showing their support. And not only them, all his friends were watching too. He remembered their interactions and how much he loved them all. His classmates… whenever they went through hardships, Rory would help them. And here, in this moment, they were cheering for him. And lastly there was Sten, the grandfather of the 7/71st. Rory knew that he was being judged by those bright yellow eyes. Like hell he would be accepted if he disappointed him. Taking a deep breath, Rory readied himself. He took one last look back at his parents. Skye and Shoutmon encouraged him with their looks back. And filled with that energy, Rory turned back to Owen, focusing inward. He was ready for this moment. ”Coronamon… evolve!” Rory snarled. And just as Owen’s body had transformed before, Rory’s body transformed too. He grew another foot, a mane of golden fur forming on the back of his head. He didn’t feel the need to try out his new powers here, instead he ran straight at Owen, feeling a surge of strength through his body. To his slight surprise, Owen didn’t act to counter, but took the blow head-on. Rory’s fist connected with his cheek, and the RaiGaogamon staggered back a few steps, but grinned in response. His paw glowed white, and he wiped his cheek, healing the damage that Rory caused. “Not bad.” Owen said in response. Rory calmed down a little, realizing what had just happened. He had evolved to his adult form. He could feel new powers surging all through his body. “Now then…” Owen continued, assuming a battle position. “Let’s get you used to that form shall we?”Rory nodded, too shocked and nervous to speak any words here. But if this was what the training was for, then he’d be all for it.

As Rory evolved, Owen took in the sight of all his new form. He was tall and muscular like Shoutmon, and at the same time, lithe and nimble like Skye. Ordinarily, Owen would have let the spar end there, but, he knew this would be poor treatment for Rory, what with him fully devoting himself to this sparring match.
“Okay then, let’s go!” Owen declared, then launched an attack against the newly evolved Coronamon. Owen thought he might have been able to make a more decisive strike in that moment, but, instead, it was Rory that drew the fires of his new form and was able to launch that at his new teacher.
It was at that moment that Owen decided that the deciding match would be more significant than a sparring blow on the outskirts of Rosewood. This would be the newest member of their group, that would provide their firepower to help protect the peace and prosperity of the digital world.
Still though, Owen looked directly at Rory’s face, determining the feelings behind what he saw.
It was the eyes that scared Owen the most. For the most part, Rory’s bright blue eyes were just a basic feature about him. A warm blue, full of life, reflecting the love of his parents. Somehow having the merry twinkle of both Skye and Shoutmon as Owen knew them as friends. But in the heat of battle, they chilled. Just as Skye’s did when Owen saw her see a deadly situation. Owen always flinched when Skye looked at him like that, and seeing the exact same look in her son’s eyes, he realized that Rory would be deadly serious from this moment on in their spar.
In response, Rory would see the same yellow eyes that his mother saw when her Captain was equally at his most deadly. Not the kind honey expression he gave his students, but the cold, hard amber he gave his enemies.
“Bring it, Rory.” Owen ordered. And Rory obeyed.
”Shining Time!” Rory snarled, and his red fires burst to blue. Owen gasped at this display. He didn’t think he’d be able to contain the Coronamon’s power like this, but, with a deep breath, he contained himself. If Rory could fight like this, then he would be absolutely ready to join the 7/71st.
“Okay, let’s see you take some hits!” Owen declared, then launched himself forward. ”Raiju Onslaught!”
Owen then punched and kicked as hard as he could without losing balance. He watched to see what Rory would do in response. And to his delight, he saw that Rory cartwheeled and somersaulted to avoid being hit by his attacks. Furthermore, the adult level Coronamon saw openings to launch counter-attacks of his own.
"Fires of War!" Rory snarled, his tailring glowed, then six orbs of light surrounded him. Owen backed away, not wanting to collide with them. With a wave of his hand, Rory launched the orbs at the RaiGaogamon, forcing him onto the defensive as they exploded with light and fire on the grass where he was standing.
Furthermore, Rory backed up that attack with a second, not hesitating. He charged the flames on his bracers, then launched an uppercut into the air to gather streams of fire above, then launched them down at Owen with a blue pillar of flame. Owen was unable to completely dodge that attack, the smell of burning fur matching the searing pain of where it hit on his arm.
This was all he needed to see from him. Rory had maintained full combat discipline in their spar so far, and there was no more he could ask for him in this situation.
“That’ll do, Rory.” Owen said, grinning. “You’ve passed the test. You’ve won!”
Rory blinked a little in confusion. “...pardon me, sir?” was all he could say in response. Sten then stood up and explained what he had just witnessed.
“Rory, you’ve fought at the strength I expect of anyone worthy of the 7/71st.” the WereGarurumon stated. “And we’ve all seen it. Your mother, your father, your brothers. And if Owen states your skills are worthy, when we’ve all seen you fight him, that’s good enough for all of us. So take a bow, accept the fact you evolved to Adult level in worthy combat, and take your place as a staunch defender digimon of the digital world.”
Rory didn’t know what to say in response to this, other than pure thanks. Yeah. He could accept all this, as a strong digimon ready to defend others. He relaxed and accepted the celebration of his family and friends.
