Kai and Tera walked out of the Backup Bayou, or rather Kai walked while Tera flew carrying a crate of Digivices. A group consisting of a wizardmon, witchmon, and a LadyDevimon managed to steal nearly fifty Digivices of a variety of types from various humans. The pair didn’t defeat the three, as they managed to blindside the group and steal the crate and flee before hiding for a period of time inside a hollowed tree for a while, with no sign of the trio they would once again continue back towards Roseward City in hopes there were people there that could help return all the Digivices to their proper owners, only for the two to be intercepted by a group who was already tasked with finding the stolen devices, a group consisting of several tamers led by a Wisemon. Before the two could react they were placed in a forcefield. Kai was tense and looking around nervous as Tera dropped the crate and was flying about nervous. “We didn’t steal ‘em! I mean we did steal them from the bad guys but we were trying to give them back!” She said trying to find a way out.
“We know, that’s not the issue at hand.” Wisemon said with a hint of sorrow to his voice as Kai started to pick up on it. The human girl looked at the elder digimon as a creeping realization dawned over her. “It was a trap wasn’t it?” She said before glancing at the crate of stolen Digivices and how it was almost too easy to steal before Wisemon nodded. “Yes,the crate is patient zero so to speak, of a dangerous virus that activates in a few days, intended to use the Digivices and by extension their owners to spread across the Digital and Human worlds. However, don’t fret, there is an option to destroy the virus without destroying you all. Stand absolutely still…”
He said pointing his open hand at the two while reading from a book, speaking in an illegible ancient language as Tera started to slow down and hover next to Kai, before there was a flash of light. Afterwards, Kai blinked twice as she was feeling disoriented, stumbling about and she felt buried in her own clothes, before falling over face first. Kai felt herself lifted soon after by what she assumed was one of the Digimon, but once she came to her senses again she looked up into the eyes of a human, a large teenage girl. She blinked twice before looking down, looking at herself buried in the top half of an enlarged school uniform. “What happened- who said that- oh…” She said before trying to look at her reflection and seeing a little girl as her hair dipped into the water. “No….” She said before hearing a strange high octave voice. “I’m a Hopmon again- what happened?” However Kai instinctively recognized the source without needing any details.
“Tera?” She said looking at the tiny Digimon confused. Who looked back at Kai. “Kai?” One of the teens around carried over the Hopmon who Kai held onto. “Did you, Dedigivolve?” She asked concerned as the Hopmon started to cry. “Yes, and I can’t Digivolve again… I’m trying but nothing. I’m a baby again.” She said as Kai held her partner close, before Wisemon sighed. “I’m sorry, I failed. I was using a spell to restore all material to a state it was last week as that’s the only way around the virus,, but instead of a matter of days.” He said as Kai was still starting to realize what he was trying to say. “It turned into years. Tera lost her progress in Digivolution, and I'm a child again.” She said before Wisemon looked down and pointed his hand at Kai’s clothes, they changed into a fitting button up shirt, long skirt with suspenders, and Mary Jane shoes. One of the tamers opened a portal. “I think it’s best if you return to the Human World Miss Kai, your partner can choose where she wants to reside, with you, or we will return them to the Village of Beginnings. You can no longer defend yourselves here.” He said calmly before the regressed pair nodded to the other. Without a word Kai got up and walked towards the portal, before tripping through the portal, winding up in Shibuya as the portal closed. Things seemed so much scarier from a smaller perspective. Kai retracted Tera into the Digivice as she would walk forward through the streets, it was scary as she was on her own. The world was now a bunch of giants.
It would take an hour and a few panic attacks of getting lost until she found her way home, grateful she had her keys as she was barely able to reach the key lock and open the door before stumbling inside. She tried to look about and she recalled she didn’t have leftovers in the fridge. She noted she had no leftovers, she groaned as she pulled out a chicken breast and put it on the counter, before pulling out a pan from under the sink. She had a premade salad mix in the fridge so she was planning on adding a seasoned chicken cutup to the mix. She pulled out a frying pan from below with both hands, noting it took this to carry the small pan now, nor reach the top of the stove. She dragged a chair along the floor and climbed it, standing on it. She would try to lean over and turn on the stovetop but she tripped on her hair and fell over, landing on her head before falling unconscious.
Kai would regain consciousness thirty minutes later, staring up at her neighbor, a foreigner named Chelsea, she was working abroad from the west as part of an international company, and from what Kai knew she was aware of the Digital World, possessing something called Spirit Totems. “Kai, Thank the stars you woke up, I reckon takin’ you to a hospital would prove difficult like this. Don’t worry girl, ya partner caught me up.” She said with a soft smile, her warm presence comforting Kai. Feeling a build up of everything she's been through finally overflowing, and finally feeling some form of safety, Kai instinctively clung to Chelsea and began to cry for the first time in years. “I can’t deal with this… I’ve put up with everything, but now I can’t help myself…” She said getting right to the core of her own problems. Chelsea stroked Kai’s hair as she let Kai cry, breaking down in a safe and comfortable space in silence. “Let me fix you something to eat darlin, you don’t need to be strong. You’ve been strong far too long, let this rugged horse bare ya loads.” She said before she would get up, and finish what Kai started in the kitchen before coming back with a small bowl of salad for Kai.
Chelsea sat behind Kai as she ate, starting to sift through Kai’s hair into two twin tails to help keep it straight. “Girl, your life has too little play, you’ve been robbed of a childhood, you deserve to be able to skin your knees, make a mistake without it bein’ a whole shindig, and most of all a place to be you without needing an empty room. As far as I heard, you’re like this for a while. As far as I’m concerned, you’ve been dealt bad hands but this time I’m burning the deck.” She said in English mostly to the confusion of Kai, who understood the language but was confused by the southern idioms.
“Wha- what are you saying?” She responded quite confused as she was wondering what Chelsea was trying to say. “I’ve been offered a promotion if I’m willing to head back home, next month, I’m takin’ it. I’m saying, I can take ya with me, we claim there’s a whole mistake of papers or somethin and create some fibs just so you can get a new identity in the states, then you can start over. As a real kid this time around, no fancy politician stuff weighing on you or puttin’ you up. Your blood is as thin and stale as paper and I know you got nowhere else to go, and I can afford it, you ain’t sufferin in the cold on my watch.” Chelsea said as Kai put the half empty bowl down, starting to tear up as she heard Chelsea speak some of the words she wanted to hear her whole life. “You, you’d do that for me? You could get in a lot of trouble.” *Kai said as she did not want to implicate Chelsea as she turned around.
“I can get in front of a firing squad and say I’d have no regrets, you suffered enough.” She said with a smile Kai teared up again, hugging Chelsea tightly. “Thank you…” She said as she felt like a new door of hope was opened.
