Kai and Tera were at a junkyard in Shibuya late at night, finding what appeared to be an original Digivice connected by wires to what appeared to be a server of some sort powered by an old generator. Kai was hearing a strange voice from her Digivice all day in varying degrees of clarity and volume, getting more and more steady as she reached the junkyard, and she returned later at night following the cries for help, having Tera help in her search before they found and destroyed the rig, freeing the Qinglongmon from it's forced captivity. "Greetings young Digidestined pair, I thank you for my liberation. As a sign of gratitude, you may have one wish. However, it must be for the sake of another and not your own." He said looking down at the two, Kai nodded and was grateful for the chance, while Tera on the other hand was a bit more, disappointed.
"So we can't benefit from the wish? That blows, how come?" Tera asked almost objecting to the idea, however Kai was a few steps ahead of her. "It's a reward and a test. He was trapped here probably cause he refused to grant his captor a wish, but we freed him. He wants to see if we did it for our own gain, or if we are truly selfless. Turning down the wish cause we can't gain from it wouldn't be a good sight either." Kai said as she would analyze the rules of the test, with the Qinlongmon nodding in approval. "Very astute young one." The wise Digimon said as he was affirming what the human girl was saying, much to her own chagrin. She was happy to use the wish for someone else, but the notion of a wish where she and Tera would not be able to benefit in any way was definitely a conundrum as everything can affect anyone else it is around.
"Why so stressed? This is easy, wish to help improve Deeplane, make food better or increase some infrastructure and boom, easy selfless wish." Tera said thinking she was able to outsmart the whole scenario only for Kai to shake her head a bit exhausted. She adjusted the tie of her uniform before she would walk up to a metal chair nearby, before starting to use a bleach wipe from the pack in her purse to clean the chair's seat and back before she would sit down. "Not so simple, we work in Deeplane and invested into it, anything that improves it, benefits us even in small margins by proxy. Still a form of gain." Kai countered as she would think about it quite heavily.
"That's the problem. Anything we can think of that has a problem, or could use some help, benefits us by proxy to wish to solve."
She explained the big problem with the terms of the wish that requires it to be truly selfless. Tera started to groan in frustration as she was wrapping her head around the catch twenty two of the whole situation. "There's no way out of this situation... oh, what if we wish for one of the streets you pass by to be cleaned?!" She said starting to get low and depressed before coming back with what she thought would be a good wish to support others. Kai started to ponder on the wish as she would consider the ramifications. She had seven streets in mind but she started to find the faults in such a wish already. "No good, there may be a clustered street I don't use cause of the litter but if the litter wasn't there I may use that street which benefits me." She said as she would cross the idea off the list. She would start to figure out if there would be some way to end the whole ordeal.
"What if we wish for some random charity on the verge of going under to be flushed with cash?" Tera said confidently as she was going to look at Kai thinking she finally had the whole case pegged down. Kai did think about it for a minute, pacing before she would stop. "Doesn't work, if I know some charity somewhere is better off, that'd help me sleep at night." She said as even Qinlingmon winced at that. "Unfortunately that does count as benefit." He affirmed Kai's point about the proxy effects of a wish do counting as benefit to the two.
Tera found herself stressed as getting a wish granted should be a fun experience to her, but now it was just an ethical roadmap of pitfalls. Kai was stressed as she was trying to find the way out. "So how do we get through this impasse?" Tera said breaking the silence as Kai was stumped. However after giving it a few minutes of thought she would snap standing straight as she had the answer. She recalled last year there was a girl in her class that never came back to school for medical issues and has been bedridden in a hospital since. Kai did make a point to stop by once in a while to check on her. She looked up at Qinlingmon confident in the choice. "I wish, for Amaterasu Satou, to gain one wish of her own choosing." She said as she would look up at the mystical Digimon.
Tera blinked twice as she would be a bit confused. "How does that work, you just gave the wish burden to another? That's not selfless. Also if this girl is a friend of yours, won't the wish she makes benefit you?" Tera pointed out before Kai shook her head. "No, my wish is for Amaterasu to get any wish. Nothing this wish does affects me directly." She pointed out before the other Digimon chimed in. "Since the second wish is not constrained by the same clause, anything it does will not be a violation of this wish. Very clever young lady. Your wish shall be granted." He said before he would start to disappear into the night. "So, that's it then?" Kai nodded as she would return Tera to her Fusion Loader before she would make her way back home and rest before school the following day.
The next day was quiet and normal relatively speaking as she would go about her morning routine, noticing nothing different from her perspective as she knew it. She would start to head to school after, walking along the way before she heard a strangely familiar voice call from behind her. "Hey! Wait up!" The voice said before Kai would turn around. Upon turning around she would find herself seeing a familiar teenage girl girl with silky grey hair and brown eyes, sat in a wheelchair. Kai blinked twice as she would put a name to the face. "Amaterasu?" She asked quite confused and joyed as she approached the girl. "Yep, wanna walk together to school?" She said casually leaving Kai dumbfounded for a moment in silence as Amaterasu laughed a bit. "Please, I could use a hand getting there, don't make me beg." She said before Kai snapped out of her state before she would walk around the girl and start to push the chair. "I know what you did, that, Qinlingmon thing, came to me. Told me you could've had any selfless wish you wanted, but you gave one to me." She said breaking the ice now that she was able to talk with Kai without looking directly at her. "Yeah, now that you mentioned it, what did you wish for?" Kai asked as she was curious on the matter.
"Someone kind payed the ultimate kindness forward, so I couldn't waste it all on myself. I wished that everyone I was with at the hospital, the friends I made there with serious recovery ahead and those also pushing against a clock, I wished all of us were able to live a good long while. Never specified being able to get up and join you on your usual run but that's on me." She said with a soft smile as Kai realized how the wish played out. "Qinlingmon, that crafty old geezer was testing your resolve too, gave you enough to be healthy for a nice long life but nothing more. When I found him he was being captive cause he didn't want to indulge greed, guess he was a bit skeptical of us." She said with a slight regret that Amaterasu didn't get to be healed all the way. "I spent the last few months near skin and bones, I'm grateful for this much. If I had to do it over, I would. Two people have their limbs back, and three are up and about with a few more decades to go. If me being able to walk immediately meant none of that happening, I'd rather not get the wish at all." She explained as she would be grateful for the miracle as it is.
"Guess you're right there. Maybe miracles are meant to be limited, so we can work to fill the rest in if we can, or learn to be content and handle what we have." She said as she was starting to rethink the notion of what a miracle should be. "Hey, you did a good thing and it paid forward twiceover, be proud for now. Also, I do have one question Qinlingmon told me to ask you for an answer." She said before Kai shrugged, not thinking it was gonna be a big deal. "Sure, ask away." She said before Amaterasu pulled out a small aqua colored original Digivice, making Kai's heart skip a beat as she would recognize the device. "What's this?" Amaterasu asked innocently as Kai started to sweat a bit before she chuckled.
"That's gonna be a long explanation..." She said as she would continue on forward.
