Chaytan’s ability proved to be fairly useful for scouting, even if maybe not precisely in the sense he intended to. There was a small clearing ahead, right in the direction where the steps were supposedly headed to. The remains of a long-snuffed campfire were easily visible there, as well as… a boombox? Undoubtedly a strange sight, even if one didn’t take into account its spherical, rather than rectangular shape. And that wasn’t even the end of it; as soon as the digimon’s sights were set on it, a voice would begin to fill the clearing’s proximity. Not loud enough to be heard by humans, but if any digimons present had an acute sense of hearing, they’d be able to make parts of it.
“Second account!”
If it was possible, the voice sounded even more cheerful than before.
“Seems like we’ve gotten the jackpot! Spike over here told us that there’s a door-structure-of-sorts by the jungle’s heart, and that if opened, it leads directly towards more treasure than what we’d see otherwise in our lifetimes! But he also said that, at plain sight, that thing seemed to be completely unopenable, so I guess there’s a trick to it? Nobody made doors with the intent of them remaining closed forever. That’s what walls are for, after all!”
Luckily, and in case anyone missed the beginning or even parts of the recording, the same account would be played a total of three times before the boombox fell silent.
There were a few paths that branched out from where the clearing was, even though they all led deeper into the island. What happened in this scene wasn’t hard to guess.
Or, was it?

Well. Thanks to all of that, Miya and Mantis now knew what an old Hanna Barbera show was. And Blue's Clues. Huh. Either way! "So, dogs of varying colors and vocations aside...It's a risky gamble no matter what we do. Because it's still clearly an active...factor in all of this." Miya mused to herself, mostly. "I'll watch it sometime and let you know my thoughts." She told Rumi. Especially as the group had begun to come upon a clearing. With...
A cheerful recording? Neat. "No sign of the blur. Yet. But multiple paths to take." Mantis observed. "I am going to continue advising against splitting up, but I think they all lead the same way--deeper in."
"Yet...I'm more worried about what the 'jackpot' might be." Miya noted. "These sorts of things are usually closed off for a reason..."

"I see what looks like a campsite and a strange boom box of some kind." Chaytan said as he landed softly on the ground.
Meanwhile both Takoda and Shillan's ears were twitching as they were picking up faint hints of the recording. Takoda then said "I'm picking up faint cheerful words but the message is faint."
"Don't worry. I got this." Shillan said as he then said "Ears of the Wolf!" The faint hints of the message became crystal clear as Shillan then said "The message says something about a door that is locked deeper in."
Kima not knowing what to do looked at Mantis before she said "I agree with not splitting up unless we have to but what path should we take?"
"Perhaps we can send a couple of us ta scout ahead ta make sure things aren't too dangerous." Blaster then suggested. Sure it wouldn't likely be splitting up as the ones who would take point would at most be only a few feet ahead.

"Oh now that you mention it that makes me feel a lot less old." Carlos cheerfully replied, a very tellingly facetious tone, though he'd soon add in a less sarcastic voice, "That movie was kinda out there though, didn't it have Mister Bean?". At any rate, Gio would be sure to highlight his rather unsubtle sarcasm less than a second later, very loudly voicing his own take.
"I think he's being sarcastic!" Dio would have probably chuckled, were he not too busy trying to pay attention to whatever that new, vaguely audible message was about. Even before relayed the info to the group, he was already thinking on how to approach said door when they got there.
"Can't we just knock it down? There's a bunch of us and at least two of us can reach Mega. That thing has no chance against our combined might."
"I guess? We still have to find it first...on that note, where to go?" They still had to figure out which path to take, after all, and no real way of knowing what laid ahead. Other than probably even more trees.
Gio seemed to take to Blaster's idea of scouting ahead quite quickly, his curiosity piqued a long time ago.
"I don't mind looking ahead."
"Sure, why don't we put blinds over our eyes too while we're at it?" Dio countered, just as dashing his brother's idea as quickly as it had arrived. Carlos gave him a glare at his needlessly harsh rebuttal, but sadly had to agree to some extent. Splitting up still seemed like a poor idea, and relying on Gio's sense of direction seemed like a quick way to get them all lost.
"Yeah, best we keep together. Let's just stick to one road and follow, it's not like we have much of a good way of telling which one's the "best" one yet, right?"

Remmy had this strange feeling that he was bringing absolutely no comfort to Carlos and his oldness. But, that was fine! He probably tried his best! Though, he did squint a little at the name Mr. Bean. Was that someone's name? The holosuited Digimon decided not to open that can of worms, after all that had been going on with Scooby Doo to begin with. Human names were such nonsense sometimes.
Kurumi was nodding about it though, so apparently this was a totally normal type of name for a person. "I think so?" It was hard to keep track of cast of such a weird movie.
But, now they were onto a more important topic. The whole reason they were here! Which was apparently a door. That didn't sound very exciting. It was understandable that everyone was on-edge, though. "Think it's cursed, or something?" Rumi questioned, hearing Miyako's concern about the jackpot being closed off. It could make sense. Especially if nobody had successfully collected it, despite these weird audio logs. Granted, there was nothing saying that the door would not have already been opened by the time they found it, anyway!
"I would rather stay with Miss Rumi," Mori added, at the thought of sending scouts ahead. And, considering Rumi didn't acknowledge it, she apparently wasn't too interested in scouting, herself! But she wasn't going to stop the others, if they thought it was a good idea. Not her monkeys, not her circus.
Another buzzkill looked to Dio's suggestion of breaking doors down using force, "feel like if it's that easy, someone would've already done that, right?" Surely, this wasn't the first time mega-levels were on this island! Unless this was a place full of babies, like the village of beginnings. Considering how there weren't other creatures roaming about, it'd be a pretty depressing village, though!
With the Xros general's partners seeming to be the only ones with any proper scouting capabilities, it was looking more and more like it was best to keep everyone together. And nobody wanted to split up along the paths, which was just fine with the trio. "Alright, well. If nobody wants'ta split up, how 'bout we just keep going straight?" It seemed like a solid enough plan, considering they had no hints on where to go! "That way, worst case, it should be easy to backtrack." In theory, at least.
And as long as nobody had any better suggestions, that would be the direction the three would start walking in! Given, if someone else suggested something better, Rumi would just go along with it. It wasn't like she had any reason to suspect that the path she picked was going to be a good one!
While the others sorted everything out on picking directions, Mori would listen to her messages. She tilted her head, processing the information, before looking around the group. Nobody looked to fit the name in the message, but maybe it was top secret! "I've heard news from Little Sister Marina. They found three house-things and a radio. One door has a gash on it." Was it from violence, or was there a reason behind it? It was a shame that detail had been left out, but maybe Marina didn't know the answer either! "The radio is asking for someone named Julius. Do any of you know them?"

Eventually, the boombox sputtered and stopped playing the message. There was quite the conflict among the group, wasn’t it? Whether it was regarding the ever-present question of whether splitting was a good idea or not, or just a simple theoretical discussion of whether the door would give into raw strength or something else. Would the group be able to remain as a unit for the remainder of their travel? And was that even important? The answers for those questions were definitely elusive at the moment.
One thing seemed fairly obvious at first, however. Despite the ongoing discussion, no one had actually taken the initiative as far as advancing went… until Kurumi’s group decided to do so. Given how progressively thicker things were getting, advancing through normal means was probably both slower and more cumbersome than at the shore, even when traversing a carved path. Was the wilderness’ repelling whoever tried to tread in deeper? Even if shadows seemed to grow taller and light dimmed under the dense canopy, at least for now, it didn’t seem like it.
What the group would find ahead, then? As they advanced, the trail would wind in admittedly strange directions, but given how the trees became taller and the distance between them smaller, it probably meant they were advancing, right? Or, at least that seemed to be the case until a huge tree stood in front of them, effectively blocking their advance. Weirdly enough, it seemed like an isolated case, as that event didn’t seem to repeat beyond it, in case anyone took the time to try and look past it.

Well, if the current consensus was to go straight, then the best thing to do here was obviously keep going straight. "There's your answer, Xros General." The Kotemon replied to Kima as Rumi's group proceeded to keep moving forward. Mantis followed along if only to help ensure people didn't wind up in danger pointlessly, and Miyako followed...for largely the same reasons.
"It's weird that we've only found audio evidence that someone had been here prior yet...no actual visual evidence." Miyako felt like there was a reason for this. Yet there was VERY OBVIOUSLY something deeper at play given everything seemed to gain more...density as they went on.
And when a humongous tree came to stop them? Miyako slotted a Digimemory into her digivice to bring forth one of her mercenaries--Robin the Patamon. "...Oh. Oh, that's huge...You don't want me to knock that down, right?" "No, just...try flying up? See if it's climbable or traversable?"
"Yeah, that...sounds like a plan." The Patamon took off! Scouting time!

"Stickin together works for me." Blaster said with a single hand clap before he said "As for going straight, it may be simple but at least it's a good practical plan for sake of safety since we don't know who or what may await us ahead."
Kima was quiet as she was looking far from confident but this was normal for the fifteen year old. She glanced over at Chaytan who nodded and flew up into the air flying just ahead of her as she followed the others down the chosen path. As the large group made their way through the foliage that had been getting denser an unforseen obstacle in the form of a giant tree in the path made itself present. Shillan then said "What in the....?" Yeah a lot could be interpreted from that blunt incomplete sentence as the rest of Kima's forces seemed as stumped as the non vampiric Sangloupmon.
Miyako brought out a Patamon who took off to see if the tree was climbable before Takoda said "Just be careful up there as there is always a chance a tree that big could be a digimon."
"Wait there is a digimon that is a giant tree? Please tell me you're kidding right." Kima said sounding nervous.
"Sorry to make you nervous, Kima, but there are digimon that are that large. Some of them even larger." Takoda said noticing Kima was no looking uncertain.
Fortunately Fuzz seemed to know what to do as he said "Don't youse worry, Kima. If things get bad we cans always use the Digi Xros to become Deputymon since that form is strong."
"Hopefully we won't need an ultimate level digimon for this task, Fuzz." Blaster said as he looked over the tree. Maybe if it wasn't traversable they could dig into the tree. Good thing digging was one thing Fuzz was also good at.

"I...suppose that's plausible." Now it was Dio's turn to feel deflated at someone shooting down his clearly perfect and not at all foolhardy plan. How dare they use sound logic against him, was it truly so bad to want to cause some property damage? Guess that meant there really was no other way but to go forward. It was quite aggravating to have such a blatant roadblock just in their way seemingly without a way to get rid of it, as if it's mere existence was there just to taunt them.
At any rate there was nowhere to go but forward, as the group made their way into the increasingly thicker greenery. While traversable, the rather cumbersome advance was becoming a bit tiresome, but that was the price to pay for exploring uncharted territory.
To add insult to injury however, they'd soon come to yet another stop, this time in the form of a gigantic tree that wouldn't have been out of place on an illustration from the Little Prince. As Miyako sent out one of her companions to scout for yet another way forward, the impmon would chime in once more.
"Why don't we just-" Dio's idea was quickly cut short by Carlos. "We're not burning it down."
"Sheesh I was just going to say we fly above it. You sure have a one track mind."
As much as Carlos wanted to call out the obvious hypocrisy on display, he had to admit that was at least a possibility. Perks of having transforming monsters and all that, surely his wouldn't be the only ones that could grow into a stronger form that also happened to fly, right?
"I guess that's an idea if it's not too tall."

As the trees started to thicken, this plan was seeming less and less solid by the step. "Shit," the blonde mumbled under her breath, while rolling her eyes. This is what she got for playing 'leader,' wasn't it?
While everyone debated what to do, Rumi only crossed her arms, and watched the Patamon that was sent on a very important mission. With any luck, there wouldn't be some sort of invisible ceiling that prevented passing from above. Granted, the tree being here in the first place wasn't particularly lucky, so she wouldn't be surprised if they had to find a more creative way to pass.
Meanwhile, the two holosuited Digimon accompanying her would be having their own conversation.
"You should touch it."
"Why me? Can't you just go through the tree?"
"If it consumes one of us, it should be you. I'm in charge of protecting Miss Rumi."
Remmy scrunched his face at this comment, trying to find the thought pattern that his associate might be having. Swing and a miss! "Is it too late to second the 'not' suggestion of burning it down?"
This only gained a firm nod from Mori, before she returned to her walkie talkie. Loudly, she would begin her report to her sister. "Little Sister Marina. Everyone ignored me when I asked them about Julius. I fear the jungle is making them hard of hearing." There was no aggressive tone or pointed stares, as she detailed to her sibling in a monotone voice. "We are stuck at a very large tree. A Patamon friend is going to see above it. Otherwise, we may have to turn around. I've convinced Remmy to touch the tree-"
"-No, you haven't. Don't tell her that!"
"-So that we can better assess the situation. He's very receptive to the idea. Affection. Big Sister Mori."
Briefly, the two Digimon would only stare at each other. And then, after a loud sigh, Remmy would turn toward the pathway blocker. "I should've stayed home," he mumbled, before stepping up to the tree, and knocking on its trunk.
While they waited for results, Rumi turned her attention to the others in the group. "So, like, if the flying potato says we can go over the tree, is everyone here actually able to?" It seemed like a pretty important question, to determine if it was even a viable way to proceed!

A lone tree among a densely packed canopy seemed to be quite the obstacle! Or, at least enough to give the party pause. There were many stances regarding what to do or what to not do to it, but the concise actions were reduced to merely two.
The first one? A Patamon was released from its digi-memory and was used as a scout of sorts, even if, admittedly, there wasn’t very much to scout. Upwards, the canopy was unbelievably thick, but traversing it was possible as long as one took the necessary time to clear a path among the thick leaves. Having an aerial snapshot of the island was something the group already had, but… what about their exact position? Plain sight would probably tell Robin that they were more or less halfway through from the island’s shores to its heart.
What about just sneaking forward, then? It was more than possible; the tree didn’t have any magical properties that prevented anyone from passing, at least if one didn’t take into account its sheer size and how anything slightly larger than the digimon would probably be unable to get through its gaps unlike the Patamon. And, just one who just saw through those gaps, what was after the tree was just the path’s continuation; Robin was free to keep on traversing if he so wished.
It was a true shame that nobody had responded to Marina’s query and Mori had to get a less-than-satisfying answer to her, but that was sometimes life, and the nature of forests that apparently progressively deafened its residents. That aside, her words were what prompted the second interaction with the weird tree, even if that had happened as a consequence of strong-arming Remmy. The Cyberdramon approached and then knocked on the tree.
And then, an ear-splitting shriek was heard coming from its trunk. It had been extremely brief, and had it been less unpleasant, the people around would probably wonder if they had truly heard anything. The sound was accompanied by a feeling of dread and unease that washed the immediate area as well, but vanished shortly afterward. Remmy would probably feel those effects the most, and then Robin if he hadn't wandered off the tree that much. On the others, it would depend on how far away from the tree they were, or how sensitive their ears were.
Was this even a clue? It was hard to say, but it was on the group to make the most out of it.

Can you imagine releasing someone from their stasis and using them as a scout? It was almost downright offensive! Still, Robin had a tough time clearing through the canopy, and eventually emerged upon...
That. Clearable canopy. Halfway through the island, and...nowhere near able to get around the tree. Welp. Time to head back down. Speaking of?
"Sorry about that--I don't think I've...ever heard of a Julius in my life. Outside of Caesar, at least. Though if I had to guess, that might be the owner of the voice we've been hearing! Probably!" Miyako was honestly more fixated on !!HUGE TREE-KUN!!. And also felt a good part of that...
Sense of dread.
"Ah. We are not alone. One moment." Mantis inquire, staring up at the tree. See, he had a RAM Giga against mental effects like UNEASE AND DREAD. So, he was...okay. At that point, Robin had descended and peered around. "Hey, anyone know who was screaming earlier? They sounded kinda angry. Also! You're probably not alone and we're halfway to the center of this island that I don't know the name of! Pretty poggers, if you ask me! ...Unfortunately there's a canopy that's tough to maneuver through at the top so not much to do with going over the tree." The Bean said, setting himself down.
"What about knocking it down and dealing with whatever lives in it...?" Miya mused. That might be a shitty idea.

After the Patamon had been scouting for awhile Kima looked at Chaytan who nodded and flew up to see what options they had and after looking for awhile he landed near Kima and said "The canopy is kinda thick Kima but we should be able to get past the tree by climbing on it."
"There's a problem with that. I, uh, don't climb that well despite bein half tha weight of tha average Ballistamon." Blaster said sounding embarrassed before he then said "If we have ta climb I'd have ta go in tha Xros Loader for a time."
Kima was glad she was in good shape now as she looked up and called out to Robin the Patamon as she said "Is everything okay up there?"
Things got more interesting when Remmy went up and knocked on the trunk of the tree as an ear splitting shriek rang out from the tree. Kima and her forces covered their ears with Takoda and Shillan groaning in pain. Fortunately the shriek was brief leaving Takoda and Shillan trying to clear ringing from their ears. Shillan was definitely glad that he wasn't using his Ears of the Wolf ability or the shriek would of been more painful to listen to.
When the shrieking stopped Kima bit her lip as if debating with herself on what to do next but didn't move. However, as if knowing what Kima wanted, Takoda approached the tree trunk before gently placing a paw on it and said "Hello there. If you can understand us, can you move out of the way of the path please?" Sure it was a long shot but if this worked then tree climbing wasn't necessary.

"I didn't say we should burn it!" Dio repeated at Remmy, something resembling genuine offense in his tone. It would have probably meant more were it not for Gio's unnimpressed look.
"Did you think about it?"
"...maybe."
That idea would suddenly sound a lot less outlandish however, as a LOUD shriek would fill the air as soon as Remmy came into contact with the tree trunk. The ensuing fear was enough to give the trio complete pause for a moment, until things calmed down enough for Carlos to let out a quiet,
"Ominous fucking ."
If only maneuvering around or over the tree was a more feasible idea, interacting with it seemed like the last thing they should do...but it was either that or turning back. And nobody seemed too keen on that idea seeing how both Miya and Kima had rather opposite thoughts on how to proceed.
"How is knocking it better than burning?" Dio asked the girl, only to get a reply from the male tamer.
"Besides forest fires and the fact it will probably take forever to set it ablaze?"
Gio meanwhile offer...somewhat of a third, if less likely option.
"Can't we just dig under it? Then again, I guess the roots would get in the way..." With that he'd just shrug and also turn to the tree. Nothing ventured nothing gained, right? "Can you please move the tree aside? We just wanna get to the other side."

Post by Kurumi on Aug 8, 2022 2:23:36 GMT
Remmy threw a glance at Dio, giving a smirk. "I did say 'not' suggestion. There's a lot of denial here for not suggesting it, huh?" Granted, the smirk was gone, as was any real sign of confidence from the holosuited digimon. As soon as it made that sound, his hand was away from the tree, and the 'man' was already taking several steps back. Mistakes were made! He'd scrunch his face, as if in disgust, while slowing the pace of his backtracking. Dread, as a feeling, was sickening. He'd much rather just not.
Meanwhile, Rumi remained completely unfazed until Mori whispered to her. "That was real." From that point, a mix of confusion and concern crossed the blonde's face, briefly.
"Really?" She had honestly been hoping it was all in her head! But, now that she noticed everybody else was reacting to it also, it was pretty obvious. Maybe the spirit user needed to trust that the things in the Digital World were actually happening, more often than not.
"Little Sister Marina, brief update. The only Julius anyone knows of is Caesar Salad," wrong Caesar, Mori! "While delicious, I don't believe it's who you are looking for. Also, a tree screamed at us for a second. It gave spooky vibes. Still working on how to go around it. Affection. Big Sister Mori."
Beyond Takoda's attempt to have a proper conversation with the tree, everyone else seemed prepared to destroy it. Or tunnel under it! Thought tunneling was quickly ruled out by the roots, which was a pretty valid point. Something this big probably had equally unpleasant roots. And Rumi didn't fancy being buried alive today. "If the tree doesn't talk back and we have Digimon that can, I vote for knocking it down." Screw keeping the tree-thing happy, if it screams at people after blocking the only path. Trees weren't supposed to be Karens.
"If you knock it down, I'm gonna stand back a ways," Remmy commented, still uncomfortable from his up-close experience with the dreadful tree. He didn't really want to know if it would have an amplified response at being attacked.
It was quite accurate that burning the tree down could take substantially longer than knocking it over. And while Mori didn't know if Xros Loaders were uncomfortable to spend time in, she wasn't going to be the one to suggest putting Blaster in any position that he didn't want to be. Which only left so many choices. "I'm fine with whatever option everyone else wants, as long as there is progression. I would hate to disappoint Little Sister Marina." Ah, yes. The real focus here: not being a disappointment to the family.
