Thirty minutes had passed since the train departed from the platform, leaving Katsumi Hirata wondering where to go and what to do next. No matter where she looked, no signs of civilization made themselves visible to her in a way that she could recognize, save for the abundance of old telephone poles and the wires that ran between them. The environment almost seemed far removed from the boundaries of society, a possibility that made Katsumi shudder with dread.
Still, the weather was rather balmy, and a cool breeze rolled through the plains and valleys in a way that caused the grass to ripple and flutter. Katsumi took a deep breath and exhaled, trying her best to remain collected in spite of her circumstances. Always remain dignified in the face of adversity, is what her parents would have told her.
Lifting the phone-shaped gadget up, Katsumi acted on the theory that her GPS feature could help triangulate her current position, and pressed the app button until what appeared to be a small cutaway of the surrounding landscape realized itself on the screen, once again depicting a golden arrow that she had presumed was her current location. Everything else, however, appeared to be a vague mess of blurred pixels; even the names of different places were hidden behind strings of indecipherable script language.
Katsumi sighed. "I guess I won't know where I am until I look around some more," she speculated aloud, stepping her way toward the stairs leading off the train platform and onto the rolling grass. It was hard for her to commit to this decision, but it didn't seem as if there was going to be another train coming for a while. Not unless she was willing to wait an indeterminate length of time for one to show up, that is.
And so, she chose to walk.
Minutes pass. Soon, it becomes a half an hour, and eventually, the full thing. On and on Katsumi marched, expecting some kind of change in the surrounding scenery, but receiving nothing of the sort. For a place so beautiful, it seemed rather homogeneous.
Glancing at the phone-thing's screen, Katsumi took notice of the GPS function's map on display, which seemed to begrudgingly reveal location data as she continued to travel in no particular direction. Geographical features began to slowly define themselves on the map, but still no points of interest.
Just how far outside of the city was she?
