"What's up, Kai? You seem distracted?" Kai looked up from his desk. Oh. Haruki. The boy was a classmate of Kai's. Kai didn't really get why Haruki and his friends always hung out at his desk during breaks. Kai wasn't nearly interesting enough to warrant their attention, after all. "Ah, no, I just have a lot going on, is all." A lot, which went by the names Kuro and Shiro, the two Digimon he'd been taking care of the past few weeks. Combine Digimon with his studying, and a multitude of club activities, and it ended with him not having a lot of free time.
Undeterred, Haruki pressed on. "I know! It's a girl, isn't it! Tell me! Who is it!?" This caught Kai off guard. He was far too busy to even think about girls. Besides, the only girls he really had had contact with recently were Paige and Lana, who were little girls! Oh, and Yui, but he hadn't heard from her in a while.
Though he hadn't spent long thinking, the conversation had already moved on... Though, the talk of girls apparently stuck. "Jey, so who's the hottest girl in the school, do you think?" The other boys chattered amongst themselves. Kai wasn't really listening. "I'll go buy some bread." He announced, and stood up to go to the cafeteria. Haruki apparently decided to go with him, because the other boy stood as well. On the way, though, he spotted a familiar face in the hall.
"Oh, hey Yui." Kai said, waving at the girl who had helped him so much with his Digimon troubles. Behind him, a shocked Haruki said "Kai? You never told me you knew Yui Kimura!" In a tone that suggested this was a big deal. Was Yui famous or something?

Yui was hanging with a group of friends in the hall, chuckling with some of her friends. "No way! He really said that?" Yui asked her friend Ayumi. "Mmhmm! He was really silly about it and clearly nervous but, it was just so cute how could I turn him down!" Ayumi said with a blush. Ayumi was a very pretty petite girl, with curly dark brown hair and bright blue eyes. She had a bow in her hair, and was over all quite adorable. Yui grinned and nudged her shoulder. "Look at you! Well good! He's a good guy. Just remember, if he messes with you..." Yui said, punching her hand with her fist. "..he has to answer to me!" she said with a wink as the girls chuckled again. Yui stopped and turned having heard a familiar voice, as she saw Kai. "Oh, hey Kai. It's been a bit. How have you been?" Yui forgot Kai was her age and they probably went to school together. How interesting. "Oh um, Ayumi, Aka, this is Kai. I met him a few weeks back um...at a cafe." she said, making up some story since well...how can she say they 'met through little digital monsters'? Aka raised an eyebrow as she stared at him. Aka had short black hair, and was well built. She was on the soccer team with Yui. She was more gruff then the sweet Ayumi. "Oh really hmm? And just what are your intentions with Yui." she said as she gave him an untrusting look. "Now now Aka. He's cool. He's just a friend. He's harmless." Yui said, waving it off as Aka crossed her arms and backed off. "If you say so Yui. Who's his friend?" she then asked, glancing at the boy behind him.

Huh, so Yui went to this school as well. Kai wondered just how many tamers went here. Also, how had no one caught them yet? He had to yank Shiro out of his bag every morning, to keep the white Digimon from coming to school with him. Fortunately, his parents worked during the day, because he knew that Shiro wouldn't stay quiet all day. Poor Kuro, stuck with him for so long by herself.
Kai was surprised by the antagonism from the other girl. Had he done something to annoy her? He didn't remember her... Though, maybe that was the problem. "No, no. We're just friends. Yui helped me out while I was in a tight spot, is all." Several tight spots, in fact. First when he'd first met his Digimon partners, then a second time when she was showing him the Digital World for the first time. It wouldn't be lying to say he owed Yui his life.
"Oh? You haven't heard of this Haruki Yuuto?" The boy next to Kai said with blatantly mock surprise. "Anyways, the two of us were heading to the cafeteria. Would you three beautiful ladies care to join us?"

So far Yui knew that Kirito, and now Kai, attended her school. But she was curious how many others there were. Could there secretly be a group of tamers here right under their noses? Intersting thought. Well they have done a good job staying hidden so...she supposed that was a good thing. Loli and Pop were used to being at home while Yui was at school the majority of the time. They usually passed the day in her bedroom playing games on her hand held. Yui nodded as well. "Yup! We don't know each other super well yet." well it was true. Though they did know each other's secrets...she wasn't about to spill that part. Yui wondered if she would ever take a trip to the digital world that DIDN'T have some sort of confrontation...that would be nice. Nice indeed. Aka raised a brow at Haruki as he seemed overly confident. "Mm..Nope! Never heard of ya. Guess you are a nobody." she said with a sly grin as Ayumi pushed her shoulder. "Oh Aka....don't be so mean to the poor guy. It's not his fault we have never noticed im before." she said with a sweet smile in a very kind tone. Yui however, was the one to respond to his invitation. "I suppose it wouldn't hurt. What do you ladies say?" she said as Ayumi was the first to respond. "Oh um...sorry I was going to meet with Hideki..." she said with a blush as Yui smiled. "No worries Ayu. You go get him." Yui said giving her a thumbs up as Ayumi waved and ran off.

"Ah, she's taken. What a shame~ But at least we have two fine ladies to join us, eh?" Haruki winked at Yui's friend, and Kai felt slightly ashamed to be associated with him. He'd just wanted to get away for a bite to eat, but it seemed this was becoming a social gathering. Well, he didn't mind it that much. Yui and her friend were much less awkward for him to talk to than Haruki's friends, who were discussing the 'hottest girls in school.' Kai wouldn't be surprised if Yui and her friends had come up in that conversation, though he'd done his best to ignore it.
"It's been a while, Yui. How've you been?" He wasn't sure how to ask about Loli and Pop, at least not in current company, so it would be best to just make small talk for now. He didn't get a chance to hear an answer though, because Haruki cut in and asked, "So, Kai, what trouble was it that Yui saved you from?" Causing Kai to mentally sigh. He'd made the lie too complicated, and now he had to cover it up with more lies. He kept walking towards the school cafeteria.
"It... Uh, was... Uh, just some... Homework issues! I was having trouble on an assignment, and Yui helped me out." Sensing weakness, Haruki dove in. "Homework... Eh?" with a grin, while raising his eyebrows. It was obvious that he didn't believe Kai's obvious lie. Kai averted his gaze, wishing he'd thought this through more before opening his fat mouth. Hopefully Yui could salvage this, before any misunderstanding were made.

Aka was going to say something, but Yui stepped in. "Now now, it's just lunch. Nothing to worry about." she said, but glanced at Haruki. "Try not to get on her bad side. She plays striker so, she can hit her target if need be." Yui said with a wink before turning back to Aka and Kai. "Oh pretty good. Things have been pretty quiet on my end. My cousins are doing well. They appreciated the treats you got them. How about yourself?" she knew she couldn't mention Loli or Pop directly, but when she was seen with them she just called them her cousins. She tried to keep it vauge though. She wasn't quite sure how to ask about Shiro or Kuro though, so she didn't. Yui raised a brow at Kai's poor lie and decided to step in. "Now Kai don't be modest. There is nothing wrong with getting help from a girl." she said with a grin. "Kai means well but you know how difficult math can be. Luckily I am pretty good at it and saw him struggling. We can't let him fail now can we?" she said with a confident smile.

Cousins? What cous-- Oh. Her Digimon, right? It was the only thing that made sense. "I've... I've been good" He responded, somewhat distractedly. He wanted to return the gesture, but wasn't quite sure how to refer to his Digimon in a way that Haruki wouldn't catch on to. The boy may be a goof, but he was uncannily perceptive. Case in point- He began guffawing at Yui.
"Yeah, and I've got a bridge I'd like to sell. Kai, fail math?" Haruki laughed again. "Kai's like- Third in the school rankings. That's what, rank 50 in the nation? He doesn't need math help." "57" Kai grumbled quietly. In his head, he added 'Barely.' He spent an unhealthy amount of time watching the rankings. He needed to work harder. At his age, Renji had been at the top of the rankings. He needed to work harder.
Haruki nudged Kai out of his self-loathing. "C'mon Kai, if you're going to spin lies to get a girl to spend some time with you, at least tell convincing ones!" Apparently Haruki had gotten the wrong idea. Well, it was better than him finding out the truth. It was slightly awkward... And embarrassing, though. "Th...That's..." He stuttered, not entirely sure what to say. He shot a glance at Yui, his eyes pleading for help.

Yui thought for a moment, well shoot. She didn't know Kai wen to her school so...of course she didn't know how good his grades were...a save...a save.... "Haha well maybe he just didn't know how to start a conversation and threw that in as an opener. It did work, and got us to spend time together so I guess it was a good move Kai. Maybe more boys should try it." Yui said with a grin as she crossed her arms and smiled. Aka chuckled a bit and shook her head behind her. "Anyways, why don't we go get some lunch. We don't have massive amounts of time before class starts up again." Yui said as she started to walk off to get some lunch, with Aka following her.

"Kai, you sly dog! Wait till the school gossips hear of this!" Haruki cackled. Kai didn't really get it, but he supposed Haruki had gotten the wrong idea? He couldn't exactly correct him without unraveling their whole web of lies. He wasn't sure what to say... Yui was going along with it, so maybe he shouldn't say anything? He ended up just blushing and looking away. This was all the confirmation Haruki needed.
By tomorrow, rumors about Kai and Yui would spread across the school, if a certain blabbermouth wasn't stopped.
"Right, right, lunch." He and Haruki also walked off with Yui and Aka. Kai couldn't bring himself to look at Yui. She was just a friend! He hadn't been trying to... to hit on her! But because they hadn't thought out their lies, a huge misunderstanding had arisen. Yui knew the truth, at least, but he had no illusions about Haruki keeping something this juicy to himself. A plague on all gossipmongers!
Kai stayed quiet the whole way to the cafeteria, despite Haruki's attempts to weedle more out of him. If he didn't say anything, he couldn't get caught in more lies. At the cafeteria, he picked up a cheap sandwich, then looked around for a seat. Usually he'd return to his classroom and eat at his desk, but ditching Yui with Haruki just seemed cruel.
