Tomomi finally reached the Tankmon and Elliot's brother. The tracks seemed to go on forever at first, but thankfully the brothers were reunited...sort of. Now there was just a crater and a digimon in between them. Tomomi sized up the competition. The Tankmon could easily be a champion level, or even an ultimate. He wasn't sure if Candlemon could go against him one on one, and charging in wasn't the wisest. Especially since the group struggled against two rookies. His concern for Elliot and Paige, and even now Issac, was stopping him from going full assault.
Tomomi spoke very lightly, so only his partner can hear exactly what he was saying, "Kami, we're going to have to bide our time until the boys can learn how to spirit evolve. Be on your toes, but don't jump right in." Candlemon nodded slowly. Since no one else seemed to take the initiative, the boy stepped forward, "Digimon! What business do you have with that boy?" It doesn't hurt to see what they are doing there, right?

"You don't have to thank us," Paige said firmly, a confident smile on her face. Inside, she wasn't sure how they were even going to do this, that Digimon that had taken away his brother looked like had he had been pretty tough. But she had never been the type to back down from a challenge, and she wasn't about to back down now that someone was in clear and obvious danger. Soon, they arrived at the pair, and Paige found herself not sure what to do.
Thankfully, though, Tomomi seemed to be taking charge on that front, a task she was all too happy to leave to him. Paige might be brave and unyielding, but she wasn't sure what to say in a situation like this. "Yeah! Tell us! Uhm...please. And maybe give him back, too? He's Elliot's brother!" perhaps she was sharing too much information...but she didn't really think that she was. After all, what use was the knowledge that the pair were brothers? Paige glanced behind herself at her pair of Digimon, frowning a bit and shaking her head at them just to make sure they understood not to go charging in right now.
Not when they still had the opportunity to talk things out and get Elliot's brother out of there without fighting happening. Since Elliot's brother wasn't exactly close to them...she didn't want to risk something bad happening, like this Digimon choosing to attack him.

Oh god. They were directly calling the Tankmon out. Elliot tried to stand as close to the periphery of the group as possible, hoping he'd be able to escape notice. Was it cowardice when you knew you sticking to the group would only slow them down? He didn't know. All he knew was that, in the heat of battle, maybe he could sneak over to his brother before being blown to bits. Maybe if he was lucky, Isaac would be able to break out the same cool powers these other kids were. Then Isaac could protect him, just like he always did. But first he'd have to reach Isaac, and with his walking stick making noise he'd have to be incredibly slow and subtle.
Kraktoof leaped up a little in surprise as the children called him out. Weren't these the same three punks he'd asked Smith and Wesson to take out? "Knew I couldn't trust those lizards as far as I could throw 'em," the Tankmon muttered, rearing up to his full height as he swiveled to face the group. "Oi, brats! You really think I'm gonna let you mess with me new digger?" he asked, priming the cannons on his arms. "This 'umie's got a map, you see. 'e's leadin' me to a new shiny. It's good, 'onest work. Gonna build character, make 'im less scrawny. Maybe if 'e digs good enough I'll keep 'im around, instead of breakin' 'im into data." He laughed, as if he had made the funniest joke in the world.
As he monologued, Isaac figured he'd take advantage of the distraction. He set down his backpack at the lip of the crater, smoothing it out to make sure it would be nice and flat. Once it settled he sat down on it, grabbing at the side of the crater to ensure he didn't start falling. He turned to the group once everything was settled, flashing a salute and a wicked grin. Then he began to gently push off, hoping for a nice, smooth ride down the crater's slope.
"I'll let you 'umies run along now, instead of blowin' you to bits," Kraktoof said. "Ain't I a nice guy? But I ain't givin' up me digge-" He proudly motioned towards Isaac, only for his jaw to drop as he noticed him sinking down the side of the slope. He lunged to grab for the boy, but made a crucial flaw in his judgment; Tankmon didn't have any hands. Unable to clothesline the boy back into submission fast enough, he was left staring over the edge of the chasm as Isaac tauntingly waved at him.
"Now that tears it!" the Tankmon roared, the cannons on his arms and nose priming brightly. "None of you are gonna make it out of 'ere now! Tri-Cannon!" A barrage of missiles sailed out, one heading for Paige, one heading for Tomomi, and one heading for Elliot.
Elliot quickly flung himself away from the missile, using his walking stick to try and provide extra force. He could only watch, eyes wide with fear, as the area where he was once standing became a small, smoking hole in the ground. He couldn't let one of those things hit him. Unfortunately, now he was left on his stomach, and with his bad leg standing would be really hard. If he was noticed, he'd be a sitting duck. Thankfully, though, his dive got him even further from the battlefield. Maybe he'd just need to make it to where Isaac was. Maybe following his brother would get him out of this situation. He began crawling over to the great crater that Tankmon was guarding, desperately hoping he'd evade notice.

Tomomi eyes Issac escaping as Tankmon starts to talk for what seems like an eternity. Once the boy is clear of the crater, he has a satisfied smile on his face. "Well, thank you for your hospitality!" It was his first attempt at sarcasm, and he think it worked out well enough!
Uh-oh. This was going to get bad very quickly. Thankfully Tomomi is one to jump the gun, "Kami digivolve before he attacks!" Tomomi bursted out, holding his D-3 to the sky. Candlemon enveloped himself in an ocean of orange light.
"Candlemon digivolve to..."
The light explodes to reveal a giant humanoid digimon made entirely of flames, "Meramon!"
The missiles fired no more than a second later, and Tomomi was off. Round pellets were one thing, but missiles were completely different. He saw that Elliot barely moved, but rushed to Paige, who thankfully stayed close. In a running jump, Tomomi wraps his arms around Paige and tries to get her out of the way.
Unfortunately, Tomomi wasn't the strongest of teenagers. They don't get far enough to clear the blast. Tomomi does the only thing he can think of, and try to cover Paige as much as he can. He'll take the blast head on, no one should die because of him. If anything, he's the one that should go. Tomomi believes he's been the obstacle in his friends way, maybe this will be some sort of redemption in his mind.
Meramon sees the missile flying towards Tomomi and Paige, and quickly punches the air in the direction of the missile, "Burning Fist!!!" The punches spawn fireballs that race towards the missile, hoping to detonate it mid-air. If not, Tomomi might be gravely injured...

Paige was glad that his brother got out of the way; that would make things...easier? Well. If things could get easier when you were facing down a creature like this one. Paige tried her best to be brave, though. Both for herself, and for the others with her; she wasn't about to back down now, not after all her talk. She had to see this through to the end, and...were those missiles!?
She had to admit, she froze up at the sight of them, her eyes growing wide. One was even heading for her, and no matter how much she urged them to, her feet just wouldn't move. This was real. It was really real...that was just now hitting her, more than it had when her Digimon had began to move and talk. Thankfully, someone...it was Tomomi, she believed, grabbed her and tried to get her out of the way.
It all happened so fast that her own Digimon had very little chance to intervene before he did. And now another Digimon, Tomomi's clearly given it was trying to stop the missiles, was trying to defend her. And her own Digimon, too, joined in in trying to stop the attack, leaping in front of her and Tomomi. Given Nyaromon's lack of range, Paige wasn't sure what she was doing, but Cupimon was firing as many rings of light as she could at the missile.
They were too close, she realized. By the time their attacks MIGHT detonate the missile, they'd probably be caught in the explosion. And then...then it'd be her fault, wasn't it? She had to be protected again. That was all that had happened this entire time, her having to be protected. Why...? Was she really such a burden?
The young girl closed her eyes shut, trying her best to not imagine what the likely outcome would be. But try as she might, she couldn't shut the thought out of her mind. Tomomi and her might be safe, as well as Meramon. But her own Digimon...they weren't nearly strong enough to handle an explosion like that. They were going to...going to...she wasn't sure. She'd never been told what happened when Digimon died, if there was something more after it. But death was...the end, wasn't it?
"You two are going to get hurt! Just...get out of the way, please!" she called out to the pair, heart gripped by the fear of what would happen. And then, something she didn't expect happened.
That strange device she had, a Digivice she believed, began to shine brightly...as did her pair of Digimon. She glanced down to the device, then back to her partners, breath held. If they were stronger...if they were Rookies...almost certainly they could handle the blast, right? Maybe even make it detonate sooner.
"Cupimon digivolve to..." "Nyaromon digivolve to..."
It happened sooner than she expected. One moment they were enveloped by that light, the next they burst out of it, looking very, very different from before.
"Kudamon!" "Salamon X!"
They wasted no time, did they...? As soon as they realized they had changed, they launched attacks at the missile again. Beams of light shot forth from Kudamon's mouth, while her Salamon began letting out loud howls, the sound waves traveling forth towards the missile.

Kraktoof laughed as the missiles exploded, seemingly enveloping all of the pesky opposing Digimon in a cloud of fire and ash. That would teach them to mess with the best! He turned his back, humming contentedly to himself as he prepared to scale down the crater. In his mind the fight was already won. There was no way the group could take a direct hit like that and still stay standing, especially when two of them were weak little humans and two of them were toddlers by Digital standards. Now all he'd have to do is get the treasure, wallop the brat for trying to run off on him, and move on with his life.
Or, rather, get stunned by sonic waves before being blasted in the back of the head by a beam of light and a fireball. It turned out Kraktoof needed to get his eyes checked, because that "direct hit" was detonated a safe distance away from the group by the combined efforts of Paige and Tomomi's Digimon. He wheeled around, fire shining in his eyes and smoke blowing from his nostrils. For the first time since he had started looting and bullying his way to the top, he had taken a significant blow. And from a bunch of worthless humans, too.
"That 'urt? That'un actually 'urt! I dunno who you brats think you are, but you ain't gonna be laughing once you eat a Lightning Blitz!" The tank's treads spun up to maximum speed, generating an electric field around Tankmon. The only thing louder than the revving of his engine was his laughter, ringing loudly and clearly through the Network Plains' empty skies. After revving up a few times for dramatic effect he charged toward the humans, arms spread wide to maximize the area of electric contact.
~~~~
Elliot didn't see any of that, of course. Still faced toward the hole, all he could do was hear. He could hear the desperation in Paige's voice as she worried about her tiny Digimon. He could hear the thud as Tomomi hit the ground. From injury, or for his own safety? He could hear the explosions as missiles came down on the group, and could only fear the worst about whether they hit or not. So desperately, he wanted to stop it. But all he could do was keep dragging himself forward.
His friends were in trouble. He dragged himself forward.
They were fighting their hardest, believing in themselves as strongly as possible. He dragged himself forward.
And yet all he could do was sit here, and hope. He dragged himself forward.
They were risking their lives. He dragged himself forward.
For his brother. For him. He dragged himself forward.
He was useless. Unarmed. Fragile. Slow. Nothing more than a burden to the group. If he had a Digimon of his own, or a transformation like Tomomi said he did, maybe he could do something. Instead, he was just another target. And yet, still, he dragged himself forward.
He sat at the edge of the crater now. It looked far steeper up close, and Elliot felt somewhat sick just looking at it. With a heave he rolled his backpack off of his shoulders, flopping onto it weakly. This was the precipice, a point of no return. He didn't know what was down there, or if his brother was even okay. He had to check, though, didn't he? Isaac would've done the same. Both hands were now clutched onto the backpack as he lingered over the edge, time slowing to a crawl.
With a final push with his good leg, he dragged himself forward. And then he was gone.
Tomomi had his eyes closed for most of the incident. Sure, he was brave enough to protect Paige, but that doesn't mean he was fearless. He heard the missile detonate and thought to himself, This is it...this can't be it!
A few seconds pass until Tomomi open his eyes and look around. Paige is still there, he's still alive and...oh! Paige's digimon are rookies now! This isn't a futile battle after all! Things can turn around yet. Now, if only the brothers could spirit evolve, they would be in the clear for sure. Speaking of which, Tomomi looked around and Elliot was not in sight. And the Tankmon was speeding to their location.
Tomomi stands and looks at him, "Tankmon! Stop this! If you go any further, you'll have to be destroyed!" Tankmon still rushed forward. From the sounds of his laughter, it was certain that bloodlust had taken over. Meramon started running towards the Tankmon, building up fire and speed until he started to slide on the ground, extending one foot forward, "Magma kick!" The attack left waves of fire in its wake, as Meramon built a wall in front of the kids, and then maneuvering around to Tankmon, hopefully hitting him in the side. Meramon's plan was to knock Tankmon off balance and send him into the fire that Meramon created.
They were...they were alive! It had actually worked! And more than that...her Digimon had digivolved, too. They were both rookies now, and Paige felt...proud? Proud and relieved. Proud that she was actually able to help in this fight, and relieved that they all weren't paste on the ground right about then. Unfortunately, that had angered the Tankmon a lot, it seemed, and Paige was again not sure what to do here.
Thankfully, Tomomi and his Digimon quickly took charge, and she could see what hew as trying to do. It was to use his own speed against him, wasn't it? If that attack the Meramon launched hit, it might knock Tankmon over, and at the speed he was already going at...he'd certainly skid right into the flames.
Seeing that, she looked to her Digimon. "Quick, help Meramon out! Get that Tankmon into the flames he made!" she spoke up, quickly taking charge. The two, instead of wasting time talking, nodded instead and set about their task.
Kudamon shot forward, floating slightly above the battle going on, before the earring on her ear began to shine ever brighter. "Everyone, look away now unless your name begins with a T and ends in an N!" she called out, hopefully not loud enough for Tankmon to hear, before the light from her earring dominated the area. "Blinding Ray!" she called out, the light pulsing for a few moments before stopping. If he was blinded, then that would make it even easier for the plan to work.
Salamon, on the other hand, had joined Meramon in charging Tankmon from the side. She let out a charge of "Sledge Dash!" as she ran towards him, intent on slamming into him with her full weight and power.
The blinding ray hit dead on, light diffusing around Tankmon's lowered helm and splashing right into his eyes. The initial block meant it didn't perfectly blind the runaway cyborg, but it did leave his vision swimming. Like a drunken sailor the Digimon's path began wavering, swerving back and forth as he tried to target the most solid looking image. Unfortunately for him, this swerving left his sides open. First came the Sledge Dash, careening right into Tankmon's side. While a little too girthy to be sent flying by such a small dog, the already-wobbly Tankmon spun to the side. That left his flank directly aligned with Meramon's incoming foot, allowing for one hell of an impact. Smoke rose from the site of the kick as Tankmon was sent spinning off, cursing as he careened right through the wall of flame.
"Stop it! Bloody 'umies!" he hissed, the orange-and-green camo pattern of his skin a bit more brown-and-black char now. Still unsure entirely what he was looking at he began backing up, trying to follow the swimming images that were only made worse by his dizziness. "That's it. If bringin' out me 'ole arsenal won't spook you off, I don't know what will!" Missile launchers began to unfold from Tankmon's back. His hands separated into big miniguns, which whirred intimidatingly as they began spinning up. The cracked jaw on his tank began to open, a flamethrower visible within. Tankmon laughed, ready to unleash all of his rage upon these interlopers.
Then he heard a crack. He had backed up a little too far, and bulked up a little too much, and all of his weight was now concentrated right by the lip of the crater. Dust began to crumble beneath his feet as he realized his mistake, and soon the Tankmon was sent speeding down the crater.
~~~~
Too fast. Everything was too fast. Elliot wanted to hurl as he hurtled down the side of the crater, already regretting his plan. Thankfully, the world seemed intent on aborting the plan for him. As he slid he hit a decently-sized rock, knocking him off of his backpack and sending him flying. Was this how it would all end? Brought here by one fall, taken out by another? He squeezed his eyes shut and waited for the impact.
Instead of an impact, he found himself being tightly grasped. As he opened his eyes he realized that his brother, also at the bottom of this chasm, had caught him. "Elliot! Jesus, I've been looking everywhere for you! Are you okay?" Isaac asked, holding tightly onto his brother. Upon realizing he was safe, Elliot grabbed on tight as well. Neither brother wanted to let go, as if fearing separation as soon as they let go again.
"Are you?" was the first thing Elliot could bring himself to say. He was far too scared to say anything else.
"It doesn't matter. All that matters is that we're together, okay? And now everything's gonna be fine." He set Elliot down, the younger boy carefully arranging his walking stick so that he could stand properly. Then, as per usual with Isaac, a litle smirk spread across his face. "Of course, while we're here, that weird-ass tank kept yammering on about treasure being down here. Wanna go nab it?"
"I don't know, Isaac. I just want to go hom-"
"Look, see? It's totally here! My thing's beeping!" Isaac pulled out his Digivice, showing it to Elliot for reference. Elliot took out his well, as if shocked his brother also had one. That's when Elliot began putting two and two together. The Digivice must've been picking up a spirit, like Tomomi was talking about! The boy's reluctance vanished as he realized he could finally be helpful. He nodded, and the two began to follow their Digivices.
~~~~
Kraktoof landed at the bottom of the crater, letting out a groan of pain. He was battered, bruised, and burned, and now to add insult to injury a bunch of stupid humans pushed him off of a cliff? Still, he was here at the bottom now, where that little brat was insisting the shinies were. At least today wasn't a total loss. The tank began to trundle off, muttering a string of swears under his breath. If he bumped into Smith and Wesson after this, they were going to be getting the business for their insubordination.
As he drifted off, however, he heard the familiar beep of Isaac's Digivice. The two boys were hunched over a small depression around the crater's center. His anger spiked at the sight, but rather than rush into combat he decided to play it a little crafty. Humans looked like they were capable of more than the Tankmon expected, and maybe doing a bit of eavesdropping would be better than charging in guns-blazing. He pressed against a small mount of dirt, leaning close to try and listen to the boys as they began to talk.
"Through chaos, this land was ravaged," Isaac read. He held a small, black shard in his hand, a single red eye visible near the point.
"For order, it was to be reborn," Elliot added, a golden shard around the same size as Isaac's in his hand.
"Your journey begins now."
With those last words, both boys began to glow. Kraktoof looked incredulous as he realized what was going on. These humans were taking the shinies for themselves! He'd been frozen out completely! With an angry roar the Tankmon burst out from behind his hiding spot, demanding "Put the shinies down or I blast you to bits, y'hear!?" Unfortunately, his threat went unheeded. The boys began to change in shape, Elliot resembling a tall, stalwart knight and Isaac a broad, skull-chested warrior. Then as quickly as they appeared they disappeared, the forms destabilizing into white energy and colliding into each other.
To any not in the canyon, the only indication something was happening was the sudden pulse of white light shooting up into the air. Kraktoof, still at the bottom, found himself staring down a small, imp-like dragon as it began floating to the ground.
The hits were sucessful! Not being killed by a tank was always a victory! As the Tankmon fell into the crater, Tomomi turned to Paige and smiled, "Hey! They digivolved! That's amazing!" Tomomi was thrilled that everyone came out of that exchange unharmed, as opposed to the previous battle.
It took Tomomi a minute to realize that neither Issac or Elliot was by their side. The happiness quickly changed over to concern. "Hey, Paige...have you seen either of the boys?" Tomomi quickly came up with the worst possible scenario. What if they were in the crater? Tomomi looked over at the giant opening in the Earth, "Oh no...Kami! Let's go!"
Tomomi didn't even think to tell Paige to stay behind, that this was dangerous, he just had to act. Running alongside Meramon, the two reached the crater. In one movement, Meramon jumped off into the abyss, while Tomomi jumped without thinking onto the Meramon's back. Tomomi was very polite and laid back, but was slowly becoming more and more of an adrenaline junkie in his time in the Digital World.
Thankfully, the drop was something Meramon could handle. As soon as they landed, a flash of light enveloped over them. Tomomi dropped down from Meramon and blocked his eyes from the intense flash. Meramon spoke out to Tomomi, "There's more than one digimon in here, it might be a trap!" Tomomi had a completely different thought, though. "....Did they find it?"
