Mitsuko enjoyed the walk to the mall. Little was said between Haruki and herself. As she stepped inside, she wondered what to get Kai. She ran through a mental list of things she did when she was sick. Unsurprisingly a lot revolved around music. She doubted any teenage guy would want a stuffed animal. "Hey, uhm, Haruki-kun?" Mitsuko said, a soft blush gracing her cheeks. "What kind of stuff does Kai like? What can you tell me about him?"She felt slightly devious, using Haruki to get to know Kai better, but it was for a good reason, Mitsuko told herself. The blush deepening upon her face.

The Haruki who was with Mitsuko now, was not the same one who had been in the hospital with her. That much was apparent from the fact that he didn't say anything on the way there.Kai had been right- There had been a hint of mischief in his voice. But it wasn't directed at Kai, oh no. Kai had never, and would never, see this side of Haruki Yuuto. A side that was anything less than cheerful, playful, and fun.
"I could tell you..." Haruki began, his voice unexpectedly dark. Was it some new tactic? Playing the bad boy to catch Mitsuki's interest? Then, suddenly, he whirled around, trapping the girl against the wall, his arm above her shoulder. It was a tactic taken straight from a manga. "But I won't do it for free. Know what I mean?" And he leaned forward until their faces were almost touching, making it clear exactly what he meant.

A girl's first kiss should be special, her mother once told her. Mitsuko's deep blue eyes widened, in realization to Haruki's intent. A sharp smack echoed in the air, as she ducked gracefully under Haruki's arm. Mitsuko's hand still stinging, from channeling her inner French heritage. "I can't believe you!" Her voice quivered softly from her rage. "I'm sorry but Kai, your friend, is fighting for his life!" Her eyes glistened with tears she was too proud to shed.
"You knew..." Mitsuko's bell like voice cracked "You knew we were coming here, as friends." Her voice hardened at the final two words. "I don't know about you, but I do not tend to make a habit of trying to blackmail my friends!" Mitsuko could feel her knees shaking, as she stormed toward the escalators.

Yup, that was the response he was looking for. Now, Haruki'd better catch up to her before she went to Kai with some strange story! "Wait!" he called, chasing after her. "I'm sorry- I didn't mean- Let me explain?" he begged. Strange, it seemed like he wasn't at all disappointed at being rejected. How strange.
"Sorry... I was trying to test you." He began apologetically. What a strange test! It was almost as if he'd ripped it from some manga! Well, it wouldn't be the strangest thing the boy had ever done. Oh, the stories that could be told about Haruki Yuuto! But, that is best left for another time.
"Kai... Kai's fragile, you know? Not just physically, because of the accident. It's like... He's closed off his heart. It may not look like it... But he never really talks about what's going on in that head of his. He makes friends... But I don't think he's really opened up to any of them. I wanted to be sure... That you wouldn't hurt him." If nothing else, the concern in the boy's voice when he spoke of Kai was genuine.
"So let me ask you- What are your intentions towards Kai." This time, the dark edge hinted back into his voice. What was his deal? Switching his personality around on a dime!? How much was genuine, and how much an act?

Mitsuko could hear Haruki calling after her. Her hand screamed in an angry protest, as she turned around at the mention of an explanation. Something about his voice seemed genuinely concerned about something. Her eyes hardened, looking Haruki straight in the eye. Mitsuko crossed her arms, the violin case dangling in front of her body.
She felt her eyes open in surprise after hearing that Haruki was testing her. Mitsuko's mind ran in circles. Why would he do that? Why test her? She wasn't entirely sure if she had thought those words, or spoken them aloud, as Haruki was answering her questions. Her eyes slowly fell to the floor, as his words echoed in her head.
Kai's fragile. Closed off his heart. I don't think he's really opened up to any of them. I wanted to be sure you wouldn't hurt him...
Tears stung her eyes once again. She could relate. She didn't have many friends herself. She could truly understand what Kai was going through. Mitsuko would never, ever hurt a friend willingly. She looked down at her hand, which was still throbbing. Yes, she did smack Haruki, but she thought he was trying to take advantage of her. However the next words Haruki spoke, broke Mitsuko out of her reverie. Six little words, caused her face to turn a deep shade of red.
What are your intentions towards Kai.
Oh. God. Mitsuko covered her face, with her free hand. What were her intentions? Mitsuko opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out. Was it really this hot in the mall? Why did her tongue seem dry? Mitsuko swallowed the lump in her throat, and finally she was able to speak "I ... I..." She stammered "I like Kai, and I do care about him. Probably more than I should for someone I just met a few hours ago." She lowered her hand, and looked Haruki directly in the eye once again, her blue eyes sparkling with emotions. "I want to be his friend, and if something more should come out of that..." Mitsuko's face blushed deeply "Well ... I wouldn't be averse to that possibility. It is too early to tell how he feels, but I don't want to scare him away either."

"Hmm." Haruki stared at Mitsuko, his expression unreadable. After a moment of strained silence, he broke out in a broad grin. "Well, that's alright, then! Let's get back to shopping!" And the boy began skipping ahead a little, before making a half turn to beam straight at Mitsuko. "Don't tell Kai about this, 'kay? He'd be embarrassed if he knew people were worried about him like this." What was going on in that head of his? Only Haruki himself knew that.

Mitsuko nodded her head mutely, as they headed into the nearest store. Her mind occupied over Kai. She definitely wouldn't bring up the Haruki issue. Way too embarrassing. A warm blush gracing her cheeks. She basically professed she loved Kai. That could go bad, quickly. She shook her head, breaking away from her thoughts. Noticing a really nice messenger bag. She would need something to carry the presents in, and like most girls she had a weakness for bags. And shoes. She picked it up off the rack and looked towards Haruki. "We'll need something to carry everything in." Mitsuko said softly. "So, books, a few CDs, or what?" She glanced around the department store, toying with the strap of her new bag.

"You still have much to learn, young padawan," Haruki stated solemnly. "It is good that I am here to steer you on the right path. For you see, Kai is, for lack of a better word, a workaholic. The only time he picks up a book is to study, or to write a book report. And if he listens to music, it is only incidentally. Honestly, I don't think he even has an mp3 player!" Haruki threw his arms up in an exaggerated gesture. What kind of high schooler did not have an mp3 player!? Kai, apparently. Heck, he'd only gotten his phone recently.
"No. For Kai, the best gifts are practical ones. Clothes are a good place to start, all I ever see him wearing all old ratty ones. And his jacket is so threadbare, it's a wonder he doesn't freeze in the winter! Also, given all the sports he plays... Some new shoes wouldn't hurt, probably. Also... School supplies. Notebooks, pencils, pens. He goes through those like a rabbit does a carrot." But was the boy telling the truth? Would Kai really be happy with such mundane presents?

Mitsuko looked at the bag intensely. Practicality was always a good thing, but didn't clothes seem a bit personal? Besides, she didn't even know what his style was! Or even his sizes! Then again, Haruki did know Kai better than she did. "Alright, that sounds good. Lets get him a couple shirts, pants, shoes and a jacket." Mitsuko knew she had a lot of money in her wallet, and what cash she didn't have, she did have her own credit card! Her father gave her an allowance, but also told her to splurge on herself every now and then. She never did, so maybe this could be good. Besides, her father would agree that it was for a good reason. She hoped. "I ... don't really know his style..." Mitsuko blushed, but she pictured Kai in clothes like herself. Business casual, yet trendy. A few button ups, and a vest. It would look good with his glasses.
Mitsuko also had a plan. She would get these things for Kai, even the school supplies. However, she would sneak in a present that she will pick out herself. A few of her favorite things, hoping he would like at least one of them. Yes, that would be perfect! Mitsuko smiled to herself, and pointed out a few button up shirts, ones that would compliment Kai's eyes really well. "Haruki, what do you think of these? With this brown vest?" Mitsuko never had a friend to go shopping with. To be honest, she was having a lot of fun!

Haruki just shrugged when asked about fashion. Kai's style? Kai's style was old and ratty, presumably hand-me-downs. Well... No reason to call more attention to that. "Seems fine, Suki-chan" In honesty, he hadn't expected her to go along with it. Clothes were expensive! Especially on the magnitude she was talking about. "How long have you known Kai, anyways?" She seemed to have known him for a while, based on how far she was willing to go. How come Haruki had never heard of her! Well, other than the part where Kai never told him anything and most of what he knew was from assumptions and snooping around. "And shouldn't you ask what size he wears before you start buying him clothes?" He teased.

Mitsuko's mind ran in circles, as she looked at the clothing. Was it too personal? She had only met him earlier that day! Well... Haruki-Kun, I..." Mitsuko felt a soft blush grace her cheeks. "I recently met him." If he didn't remember that she made a comment about knowing him only for a few hours, it wasn't her place to bring it up again.
"Perhaps... Perhaps it is too personal. I just want to get him something he would enjoy." Mitsuko, toying with the bag strap again, looked across the room. Kai seemed about the same size as her father, perhaps a bit thinner. What could she possibly get him? "Any chance he is artistic?" A new plan forming into her mind.

"Nyehehe. Kai works fast, for you to be so infatuated so soon! Tell me, what's his secret." Haruki whispered conspiratorially. But then he stepped away chuckling. "Really? I thought it was fine. It just seemed he'd enjoy clothes that actually fit more!" he laughed again. "And artistic... Well, he is a member of the art club. But I wouldn't call him artistic. He's too stiff. Stick in the mud. Cares too much about the principles of the matter. second guessing and double checking. I've seen his art. It looks nice... But I can't feel anything of him in it, you know?"

Mitsuko's blush deepened once again. "There... is no secret... At least not that I know of!" She looked towards the clock, realizing that time was slipping away. She still hadn't found a suitable gift! "Haruki-Kun?" Mitsuko said softly, "Why don't you pick out a gift for Kai? I will get him something from the Art Department, and we can meet at the register?" she offered. She knew exactly what she wanted to get Kai. Her blue eyes sparkling in the light. She hoped that it would be enough. He was part of the art club... but his art was missing something. Maybe it was the same thing Mitsuko herself felt like her music missed at times. Emotions. A soul so to speak. Yes, she did have the techniques, but until today she hadn't felt the music. Like she had with Kai. Whatever the case, she was determined to get Kai something perfect.

As Haruki watched Mitsuko go, his expression darkened again for a moment. But as soon as it had appeared, it was gone. "Hmmm... What to get... What to get~" He hummed cheerfully. Well... He did already have several bought. But just saying that was weak! No way he'd let himself be outdone by this girl! He was Kai's best friend! Not her! Ah, there it was again. That darkness. He brushed it away and skipped through the mall. What was left to buy for Kai~

Mitsuko walked through isles of paints, brushes and pencils. Her eyes scanning the merchandise, looking for what she wanted. Her hand caressed the deep, rich looking cherry case. She opened the beautiful silver clasps and inspected the art supplies. Water color paints, oil paints, acrylic paints, and pencils of every color. She lifted the risers on both sides. Beneath the pencils, were markers in every color, and below the paints were oil pastels ranging in colors of the rainbow! It also had two pencils, two brushes an eraser, pencil sharpener and a wooden humanoid doll, for drawing poses and shading properly. Mitsuko closed the art kit, properly satisfied. She grabbed a sketch book and an extra pack of drawing pencils, she headed towards the register. After paying for her bag, the art kit, the sketch book, and pencils, she wrote a note on the inside of the sketch book, in her elegant writing.
"Dear Kai,
I know we haven't known each other long, but I truly wish you a safe and speedy recovery. Should you ever need anything, I will be here for you. I hope you find something to inspire you, and being your art to life.
-Mitsuko"
"Excuse me ... Miss?" Mitsuko called to the saleswoman as she finished her note and closed the drawing book. "Could you please wrap these for me?" The woman nodded and wrapped the art box , sketch book and pencils together in a nice package. Mitsuko chose a silvery paper that matched her hair and a blue ribbon that matched her eyes. Mitsuko felt ready, as she slipped the present into her bag, and held tightly onto her violin. Now to wait for Haruki, and pay for his purchase.
