The Path of Reforging Begins (Alicia/Kai)

"Geeze... why'd it have to come up in an area this freaking hot?" Alicia grumbled. True, she wasn't the kind of person to allow herself to be knocked down by something as simple as some excessive heat. That didn't mean she couldn't voice a complaint about her lot, though.
To recount, the duo had landed in the Trailmon Terminal within the Digital Core, close by Terminus City. There the upcoming spirit user had the displeasure of being the sole witness to her own Spirit's stunned disbelief at the same fact Alicia herself had come to notice. The fact that a Spirit that identified as male was paired with a young woman was enough to give him pause, followed by a huge and heavy sigh.
Fortunately, like Alicia herself, the spirit bounced back relatively quickly. He took the moment to pull himself together and explain a bit of how the D-Scanner itself worked to her, something the young woman was rather grateful for. With that explanation out of the way, Alicia followed the Spirit's guide and opened up the map to lead them to her first spirit.
A little questioning about locations later and the team was off to the Western Flatlands, thankfully via shortcut with another Trailmon ride.
"We're in a desert. What were you expecting?" her Spirit shot back rhetorically, giving the impression of a slight frown and a tilt of his head. At the very least arriving at the Digital World had fixed whatever 'connection issues' the two were having.
"I... I really don't know..." Alicia whispered back, sighing. It was thanks to this series of events that she, Kai, Kuro, and Shiro were now trudging through the Folder Desert. "But I just wanna get this over and done with so I have at least something to protect myself with." she continued under her breath, shaking her head.
"Just remember that this first piece is not all that powerful on its own. It's merely the first step on a long path."
She could only groan at the reminder that this was going to be a recurring thing.

The desert. Kai... Had last been here, for a different Spirit hunt. With Rei... And it hadn't ended well. Perhaps it was his imagination... But he almost felt like he could see the town that had been destroyed when Scout became Skullgreymon. Another pang of guilt and anxiety. If something like that happened again... Could he really stop Alicia without hurting her? Certainly, he couldn't if she was on SkullGreymon's level... No. This way of thinking was bad. Surely the first, and in Kai's experience, weakest, spirit wouldn't be so disastrous... Right?
"How much farther is it?" Kai asked, shielding his eyes against the occasionally wind spurts blasting sand into his face. A shame that the Trailmon had only taken them this far... But, then, he couldn't really ask for too much. "Pah! I hate sand!" Shiro yelped. Kuro just dug deeper into Kai's bag, to keep the sand from getting into her fur... But it wasn't very useful. Kai was going to have to dump the bag before going back, or else explain how all that sand got into his room.

Alicia wasn't blind even in the rough sands, she was picking up the small, involuntary shifts and twitches that came from more then just discomfort. She was starting to suspect that she wound up leading him to a place that brought up some bad memories. She hoped that wasn't the case.
"There is indeed something troubling the boy." her spirit chipped in all of a sudden. "Though at the very least it wasn't an event out here specifically, merely in the general area. It was the kind of event that can scar a young one for years to come and invite justifiable paranoia."
"Oh great..." she muttered under her breath, before checking her D-Scanner again. Upon doing so, however, she paused and blinked. "Huh...? Okay that's weird, It looks like we're right on top of it but..." But there was no Spirit in sight. "Oh for crying out loud, is it buried somewhere in this area?"
"It is. Fortunately you're about to have your work-" The message didn't come quite fast enough, as a loud rumble went through the area. Alicia blinked and looked around, about to speak up, before the ground under her feet seemed to suddenly lose its solidity, collapsing under her. A yelp followed from the young woman as she, along with a fair amount of sand, fell into what seemed to be a small, sealed chamber. "... - mostly done for you. Sorry about that though. Go ahead and start digging around for the first piece of my power."
Alicia just groaned and sat herself up, spitting out some of the sand that got in her mouth. "Bleh!" Figuring that Kai might flip out, or could already be flipping out for all she knew, over this she looked up and called out, "I'm fine! I'm fine! All this sand cushioned my fall." Getting up, she dusted herself off and hummed softly. The entire chamber looked like it was made of metal that was starting to rust through, which would explain why the roof of it gave way. "Anyways, it's actually pretty fortunate for us that this happened. He's saying that the Spirit's in this little... Heck, for lack of a better thing to call it, metal desert cave."
Sighing to herself, she got some gloves out of her old toolkit and got to work sifting through the sands. While she wouldn't exactly be too bother if, say, her nails got scratched up by the sand, she did want to put them on to reduce the clean up for her own body later. She could just rinse the gloves off when she was done after all instead of the alternative.

Kai was, understandably, rather concerned when the person he had tagged along in order to protect, suddenly vanished into the sands. He scrambled over to the edge of the pit, which had not been there a second ago. "Alicia!? Are you okay!?" He called down... And it wasn't long before he got a response. Phew. She was okay. And her spirit was down there, that was good. Next order of business- Getting down. After all... Crap! In a panic, he called down, "Don't move until I get there! In my experience... Spirit totems are guarded by Digimon! Usually tough ones, and ones who don't like their treasures being taken!" It was such a stupid thing to have forgotten! He needed to get down there, stat! But how? He... Probably could have jumped... But with a broken arm and ribs... He wasn't sure he should risk it.
"Get a move on, already!" called the impatient Shiro, as he casually headbutted Kai into the pit. "Wai-Whauuuugh!" Kai called as he fell. Fortunately, Alicia was right, the sand was soft. And he managed to land on his back... Which was a plus, until Shiro fell solidly on one of his broken ribs. Ouch. He wince in pain, and brushed the white Digimon off with his good hand. Safe from the sandy wind, Kuro also took the opportunity to get out of the bag, and shake some sand from her fur. "I'm.. Guh. Fine." He forced out, not sounding at all fine as he rose to his feet. "Let's go find that spirit."
"The sooner we leave this desert, the better." Kuro declared, in one of her rare moments of talkative-ness.

Alicia winced a bit as she heard Kai's yelp from his partner... 'helping' expedite the procedure of entering the little pit they'd stumbled across. He certainly didn't sound as fine as he claimed he was but she didn't really have a place to comment on it. Still, with confirmation that Kai was... if not 'alright' then at least not any more injured then he was previously, she had time to dwell on what he'd mentioned right before getting shoved.
"If there are guardians around, then I suppose I'd better learn how to really fight fast..." she commented. However, the tone she had was distant, almost unfocused, as if the thought of fighting for her life brought her back to a dark place. Considering the events of that one night, it wouldn't be a surprise had Kai been aware of exactly what that night was like.
"You seem a bit shaken by the prospect, Alicia." her spirit commented as he observed her more closely from wherever he gazed down upon her. Her distinct lack of response, however, left him quite worried. So far she'd never failed to at least utter some kind of noise in acknowledgement of his presence. For her to suddenly clam up on him... "... I see, I'm sorry for bothering you."
Again, she failed to answer him. However this time it was more because she was distracted by something else. "Hey Kai? I think I found it!" It had taken her a fair amount of digging. which lead her to uncover a rusted over and sand-blasted plate of metal barely containing a soft silver glow. With a grunt of effort, the young woman hauled the plate up and off, revealing the very first of her many spirit totems.
She was thankful she managed to find it so quickly to be honest, but she wasn't sure why she seemed to have been drawn to this part of the pit in general. It's not like the D-Scanner was indicating anything as to whether or not she was getting any closer to the Spirit. That might strike Kai as a little odd though, given his past experience assisting other Spirit Users on their more difficult hunts.
Either way, with a another pointer from her disembodied voice of an adviser, Alicia brought out her D-Scanner and claimed the Sprite Spirit as her own, before looking around warily. Was anything about to ambush them? Kai did mention guardians, albeit belatedly, so she was a bit worried about the possibility. "Huh... it doesn't seem like there's anything around. Let's split before any possible guardians decide to rear their heads, eh?"

Kai waited for something to attack. And waited. And waited. Even when Alicia announced that she'd found it, he waited for something to come. He... Hadn't been much help with the digging. All things considered, mostly his arm and the fact that she had the spirit talking to her and he didn't. meant that he was much more use on guard duty. Or so he'd thought. But nothing had come. "Right. Yes. Back to the surface is better. Shiro, you ready?" What, it wasn't like he could easily climb out! Not with that arm! ALicia was probably confused about what he was planning, though. "Always!"
The boy raised his Digivice. Kuro! Shiro! Digivolve!"
Light bathed over the two Digimon, their forms morphing and growing. Why digivolve Kuro as well, you might wonder? Well, Kai had quickly learned that neither of his partners would digivolve, unless he digivolved both. Slightly inconvenient, at times. Kai pulled himself onto Shiro's back- The white Digimon was much more willing to take riders. At least, so long as they did not make fun of the tiny wings sprouting from his shoulder blade. "Hop aboard, unless you'd rather climb out yourself."
Seriously, why wasn't anything attackjing! Kai... Was happy to not have to fight, but terrified at the thought that something was surely coming, and he didn't know when or where.

Alicia tilted her head as Kai addressed his twin partners. Whatever were they going to do? Its not like Kuro and Shiro could haul him out even if they worked together. So what was the plan then? "I think you're going to enjoy this one." Her Steel Spirit mused. Alicia couldn't help but notice the soft voice being louder now that she'd acquired her first spirit. And then her thoughts were abruptly cut off as the two felines grew in size, easily large enough for Kai to ride on one of them. "Okay that is pretty cool." The young woman muttered under her breath, smiling to herself. Then the offer was extended to her for a ride out and she chuckled. "Thanks, but no thanks, I can't rely on you guys for everything!" she shot back in good spirits. Taking a running start she managed to make a jump and grab hold of the edge, thankful that it wasn't any higher then that. Otherwise she wouldn't have made it. All her time working on vehicles clearly had it's effect on her muscles, as with a few swings she was able to haul herself top-side on her hands and knees, wiping her brow. "Heh, someone's a show off." came the spirit's comment. "Oh hush you," Alicia quipped back with a mirthful chuckle. She then blinked as she heard a sharp gasp, curious as to what was setting her Spirit adviser on edge. "Move it, kid!" If only that warning had come sooner. Alicia snapped to attention as she felt her focus being nudged, and her eyes went wide. Five large, draconic creatures, Digimon she presumed, had arrived in the area and they didn't look happy. Well, they looked as angry as fiery saurian creatures with metal masks could look like anyways." "Flame Hit!" one of them cried and launched a burst of fire from its hand. Alicia only had time to shriek as the bolt impacted close to her, the blast throwing her back into the pit with a noticeable burn from the explosion on her right arm. "Oh for crying out loud!" she hissed as she reflexively grasped the injured arm. It wasn't a critical wound by any stretch of the imagination, but it certainly hurt like a son-of-a-gun. "Hey Kai, got any idea on what it takes to trigger one of these Spirits? I'd rather not get char broiled in the desert. Or anywhere for that matter!"

Shiro, in an uncharacteristic display of patience, waited for Alicia to clear the pit before trotting forward to leap out. But from the sounds he heard... The thing he'd been keeping on guard for was already here!"Shiro!" "I know!" The white Digimon ran forward, easily leaping out of the pit. And they promptly found themselves surrounded by a group of... Flarizamon! A digimon he recognized, the armor evolved form of Tomomi's partner, Kami! But... There were a lot of them here. And they didn't look friendly.
Kuro swiftly climbed out of the pit after them. Still... It was three against five... And Alicia had only just received her first spirit. He glanced at his arm- So quickly that it may not have been noticed. At that time... There had only been two opponents, and Tomomi was far more experienced than Alicia. This... Did not look good. "Press buttons! One should do it! A ring of light will appear around your hand! I'll say this now though- Unless that spirit of yours is ridiculously strong- Run once you've transformed! I'll hold them off! Outnumbered like this, is no place for your first fight!" Would he be able to stall them...? He didn't know. But he knew that, for Alicia's sake... He had to try.
He just hoped Alicia would listen. They didn't exactly have the luxury of arguing about it.

Alicia grunted a bit in response and took a glance at her D-Scanner. Kai and his partners were buying her some time so she could fuss with the blasted device that apparently decided it wouldn't function for her at the moment. Nothing she did in her frustration could get the darn thing to work.
"Unfortunately for you, it's not quite that simple..." the spirit mused, getting her attention.
"I don't see you sp-" She never got to finish her retort.
"Quiet, youngling!" came the fierce bark, making Alicia wince. That sounded like a voice she really didn't want to ignore or back talk to. "Now then... Steady your nerves and focus your spirit. My power is that of Steel, and thus in my current state it will not respond to a panicked will. Further more, it is of a careful balance between two great extremes. It won't be obvious yet, but it still holds true even for your first form." Alicia clenched her free hand tightly in response and took a breath to settle herself.
"None of this is making sense you know." she quipped back.
"Strap yourself in kid, there's no changing paths now. Now, you need to forge the Steel necessary to summon the strength of your spirits from within. Feed the flame that sparked that night when you fought for your life." Alicia grimaced a bit, not really understanding what the crazy voice was getting up to... until she felt it deep inside. "That's it, focus it. And invoke the first incarnation of Steel you've recovered."
The ring of light Kai mentioned appeared around her hand as she raised it up. "Spirit... Evolution!" With a swipe of the D-Scanner and a flash of light, the human was replaced by a Digimon. "Rustdramon!"
Unfortunately, given its small, battered, and rusty appearance, it wasn't a form that looked suited for any real fight. The little stout-armored dragon that Alicia had become couldn't help but squawk in outrage. "Oh come on! What am I supposed to do with this? Did I do something wrong for all of this steel to come out so... well, rusted?"
"You picked this up from its slumber from who knows how many years, decades, centuries, maybe even millenia ago. Be happy you've got something functional at all. Besides, you've got a friend to lend assistance to."
"Right, right..." she replied, agreeing with the Steel Spirit for now. Alicia, as Rustdramon now, looked up and leaped, easily clearing the pit now and landing beside Kai and Shiro. and pulled hidden lips back in an audible snarl.
"Kai, you're mad if you think I'm ditching you to die against superior numbers. Either we stand and fight together, or we make a run for it together. I won't allow any other options." She answered back to his earlier suggestion of fleeing once she managed to trigger her Spirit. If he cared to notice, her voice was deeper now, echoing a bit from the rusted shell that was her armor. "I may not be much right now, but hey what's one more fight for my life against unlikely odds...?"
The time for talk was over, each of the Flarizamon howled and roared at the sight of Rustdramon and charged the three Digimon and human tamer.
"Shard Breath!" Alicia called taking a breath spewing a series of rusted shards. Putting a bit of strategy into the move, she swept her attack so that the shards impacted with points upward mere inches in front of the charging fire monsters. Luck was on her side, as three wound up stepping on the impromptu caltrops and yelping, halted immediately from the injuries to their feet slowing them down for the time being.
That still left two Flarizamon bearing down on them though. "Thrust Rush!" one called, lunging forward and turning into a sprialling ball of fiery death aimed at bowling the lot of them over, picking up speed as it went. "Fire Tower!" The other announced, slowing down and releasing a stream of flames, cutting off the left-sided escape path. They'd have to deal with the rolling Flarizamon another way since it would likely turn into them if they dodged right.

"You..." Kai clamped his hand over his face and ground his teeth. "Look. We aren't going to win. The fact is, there's too many of them. I wasn't just telling you to get out to act cool- I can handle myself. For at least a moment. I told you to run so that when I hightail it, I wouldn't have to watch out to be sure you'd gotten away!" Kai groaned. "Pssh. Who'd run!?" Shiro said excitedly. Kai groaned again. Seriously? Five versus three, and of the three, two were all for fighting. "Whatever. Too late now."
Too late by far. The Digimon were attacking. A smart move by Alicia stopped most of them... But one was barreling in, and another was cutting off their ability to dodge. They were out of time to run. And by the sounds of it, he and Kuro were the only ones interested in running. And Kuro wouldn't leave her brother, if it came down to it. They had to fight. Crap. "Hah! Leave this to me!" Shiro declared, throwing himself at the oncoming ball of flame. Kai knew Shiro was tough enough to take that level of beating... But it didn't stop him from cringing when the two collided.
"Heavy Blast!" Kuro called, firing a supporting blast at one of the Flarizamon that had been stalled by the spikes. It wasn't a powerful attack, but it was better than nothing. Still... Neither Kuro nor Alicia would last long if the Flarizamon reached them. But Shiro wouldn't last long, not if he was targetted down by five enemies. And if he fell, so would Kuro. And vice versa, so even if he let them through it wouldn't help. The fact was, it was two champions and a rookie, against five champions. There was no way this ended well.

Alicia smirked a bit, despite it being hidden. "I've learned to never give up, even if the odds are hopeless." Had she ever. The scar was proof enough of that.
"Rally your strength then, we have quite the uphill battle!" the Steel Spirit noted, a hint of a smirk in his own voice.
Still, both had to wince as Shiro slammed into the rolling ball of saurian fire that was the fastest Flarizamon. Fortunately that stopped the fiery mon in its tracks. Unfortuantely, the Flarizamon in turn was able to uncurl and pretty much bear hug the white feline. Hopefully Shiro would be able to shake him off and deal with that.
The second Flarizamon, which had launched the fire tower to block them off earlier, rushed to join his companion in wrestling with the brave cat Digimon. Alicia, on the other hand, wasn't about to let Shiro get double teamed quite so easily. Pounding her metal feet on the sand, the Spirit User charged out as well, whipping her tail down and into the sand. Swing hard, she managed to throw a huge cloud of dust into the free Flarizamon's face, blinding it and drawing an angry howl as it tried to scratch the sand out of its eyes.
"Corrosion Fang!" Alicia howled, lunging at the blinded Flarizamon and clamping her jaws around its throat. The fire champion howled in pain from the bite as it collapsed onto it's back. Odd that a Digimon equivalent to Rookie level seemed to be causing so much agony for a Champion... Closer inspection though would show the Flarizamon's neck starting to spark and sputter, looking as if the very data that made up that part of its body was being damaged by the attack.
"Flame Hit!" three more voices called. Alicia only had time to realize what was coming and try to jump away. Unfortunately that wasn't quite enough to save her from the three shots that the spiked Flarizamon from earlier sent her way. True she avoided the worst of it, but she was still sent rolling away with her armored body carrying noticeable burns. The Flarizamon she'd bitten and blinded started to pick himself up, though he was rather shaky on his feet, shuddering at the pain he'd just endured. His neck continued to glitch out for a few more seconds even after Alicia let go, before snapping back to normal.
Looked like they weren't going to get any free damage on the enemies with that, but it was still a strong attack that left it's mark on the victim Flarizamon. Maybe this wasn't as hopeless as Kai first thought.

No... There was no way they could hold up. Even if Alicia's attacks were effective... And Shiro could definitely hold his own against one, even two of their foes... But Kuro couldn't. The black Digimon was not a fighter on her best day, and at the moment... Kai could sense that she was restrained, unwilling to leave his side. Keeping him safe, the worthless human who could do nothing but watch and fear the worst. In Kuro's mind, last time she had left his side- He had been injured, severely. She was not about to let that happen again. But Kai wasn't worried for himself, no. Alicia was... Roughly the same power as Flamon, or BigAgumon. The weakest spirits in their respective user's arsenal. No match for the power of Flarizamon.
And this was painfully obvious when three of the wild Digimon struck her with their attacks- Kai couldn't see how much she had dodged through the turbulence of the battle, and had no choice but to assume the worst. Shiro managed to throw back the Flarizamon he had been fighting with brute force, and ran over to her. He would fight all five until she recovered, if he had to. But Kai knew he could not lastThis was his fault! Why... Why had he not called Scout? Rei? Tomomi? Anyone!? Why had he been so headstrong as to think he could protect anyone! He clenched his digivice to his side and mourned his own uselessness. Why. Why. Why. Why. Why.
Perhaps sensing her Tamer's turbulent emotions, Kuro began to speak. "Kai..." She began, softly. "You are right. As it is... This battle is one we cannot win. But..." Whatever she was saying was crudely cut off by Shiro. "Grah! Battle I can't win!? Such a thing... HEAVY BLAST! Does not exist!" Shiro launched an energy ball mid boast, which flew straight for one of the flaming lizards. But while that one fell back, the other four continued to approach- And the one that was hit did not take long to recover.
"There is a way, Kai. But it all depends on you. So you can either give up and we all die, or-" She was cut off again. "YOU CAN KICK IT UP A NOTCH!" Shiro bellowed, diving into the nearest Flarizamon. But there were four others, right there. Even with Alicia... Kai was certain Shiro would lose. Be deleted. Be gone... He didn't want that. And he knew exactly what Kuro and Shiro meant. But... He had never Digivolved beyond Champion before. Was he even capable of doing so? After all... All signs pointed to him being an accident, not meant to be a Tamer. It... Was honestly a miracle he could even reach Champion.
His hesitation was obvious. "There is no time. DO IT." Kuro's voice grew loud, very unlike the soft spoken Digimon. Her love for her brother was obvious- It hurt her to see him in such peril. And she was right. It was now or never. Kai didn't have a choice. If this didn't work... He held up his Digivice. "Twin... Digivolution!" he called. And was met with a gratifying sight, the screen of the device lighting... And at the same time, Kuro and Shiro appeared to be enveloped in energy. Black for Kuro, white for Shiro. But unlike usual, this energy, which Kai suspected to be raw code, did not simply reform into higher forms. The two orbs stretched, straight for each other, the white one even pushing aside two of the Flarizamon to do so.
Kai had never seen anything like it. Neither had the Flarizamon, given their lack of reaction. Either that or it was just Digimon etiquette to not interrupt Digivolution. Either way, these stretched portions of the orbs that had been Kuro and Shiro began to meld, mix... To become one. But then something happened. The two snapped back to themselves. And, having started to mix... A blatant white patch appeared on the black one, and vice versa. Kai didn't know what was going on... But the two orbs of what he could only assume were Kuro and Shiro's raw code began to contract. But not much... Instead, it was as if it was pulled over a framework with the extremities protruding first, until the whole body was revealed. He... Had done it! They had Digivolved! And not a moment too soon, as Shiro swiped two of the Flarizamon away with a single backhanded stroke.
"YANGMON!" "Yinmon."
Kai had a moment to admire their new forms. The two... Held themselves very similarly to the Flarizamon, bipedal, but with a very hunched forward head. Very different from their previous form. And much larger, too- While Shiro had been on par with the Flarizamon's size before... He dwarfed them, now. And Kuro, who had been smaller, reached the same size. And Shiro's wings had fully protruded- No more teasing him about his little baby wings now! And, perhaps a result of the strange digivolution... Each now bore a distinct pattern. A circuitboard diagram, Kai was able to recognize, but did not have the time or knowledge to determine the meaning. And their eyes now bore the color of their counterpart, Shiro's being black and Kuro's being white. Overall... It was quite impressive.
More importantly... With two Ultimate level Digimon on his side... Perhaps the Flarizamon would realize they were outclassed, and give up without a fight?

Alicia smiled and panted as she rose to her feet again, watching the felines evolve once more. Kuro and Shiro were now certainly the most powerful Digimon she'd seen so far. Granted, she hadn't seen many, but that wasn't the point. With Shiro swatting away two of their foes with a single swipe of his paw, the saurian monsters quivered in fear, eyes wide as they gazed up at the Ultimate level mons. With their numbers they might have been able to take one down. Might being the keyword there. But two of them working together? Even wild digimon such as they knew this was a suicide battle if they continued any longer. Those prided numbers would not avail them here.
So they did what wild animals did best when confronted with blatantly superior power. They turned tail and fled for their lives. No treasure they desired to keep was worth facing Kuro and Shiro in their current forms. Even as they faded into the distance, Alicia kept her guard up for a while longer, wanting to make absolutely sure this wasn't some kind of trick. When no returning force of greater numbers arrived, she finally let the breath she was holding out and shifted back into her human form, walking over to Kai steadily.
"Hey... I'm sorry, Kai. I put you under a lot of stress with that stunt, didn't I...?" She quipped with a smile, holding her hand out. "But somehow, I could feel it. If we stood together, we'd make it through alright. You have some amazing partners there. Never doubt them, and more importantly, never doubt yourself. I know I'm still very much new to this Digimon thing but if what happened to me when I got my D-Scanner was any indication, things like this don't happen on accident."
She chuckled a bit after that, raising her free hand to cover her mouth. "Oh dear look at me, chatting your ear off since I overheard what Kuro was saying just before you pushed past your fears. Maybe I'm reading this completely wrong. Maybe I misheard something. Either way, here's a fact. I'd be dead for sure without you so... Thank you. Now, let's get back to somewhere not so sandy so we can clean all this gunk off, shall we?"

Kai breathed a deep sigh of relief, as the wild Digimon retreated. They... Had been lucky. If he hadn't... Hadn't been able to Digivolve Kuro and Shiro... Well, as Kuro said. They would die. It had been... A miracle that he had succeeded. It had only been... Two months since Kuro and Shiro had first reached Champion. Kai couldn't say he knew what the expected time between Digivolutions was... But it seemed early. From the time he met them, it had been a week till their first digivolution. And a month or so after that for the second. So was their growth fast, or slow? Kai... Couldn't say. He'd have to ask someone else. Someone knowledgeable. Like that DATS guy, Josh. He seemed like he might know.
"That's right, you did. But... To be fair, even if you did listen to me and run- I know Shiro well enough to know he never would." Hearing his name, Shiro perked up. "That's right! I'm the strongest there is! I never run!" Whether this was as much to be proud of as Shiro seemed to think... Was questionable. But Kai let it pass. Shiro had, after all, just casually knocked aside two Champion level Digimon. Kai doubted he was the absolute strongest, especially remembering Giygas, but there was no questioning his strength.
Anyways... My point is, it's over. We won. Somehow. But it was a fluke. It was... Luck, that Kuro and Shiro were able to digivolve. You can't expect flukes like that every time. When it comes down to it... If a battle seems unwinnable, it very well may be. Believing in yourself is all fine and good... But please, know when to stop. If you'd gotten hurt... Or killed, it would have been my fault. For bringing you here. So please, don't fight against the odds just because you lucked out once." His voice was almost pleading. He was lucky that when it came to him, he'd come out with just a broken arm. And in that fight... It had been even. No, he'd even had the advantage, since Tomomi was there. If Kuro and Shiro hadn't digivolved... If Kai hadn't been there... Kai just had a vision of Rustdramon's body lying broken on the sands.
Kuro broke in. "Yes. Let us get out of this nasty sand and grime. I can already tell that it will take forever to take the sand out of my fur." Kai just nodded in agreement. He... Didn't really feel like he had any more words in him. Well, at least this time he wasn't passing out with hypothermia.

Alicia smiled softly, sighing to herself as she listened to Kai. So it turns out standing and fighting really was the best call. If Shiro would've refused to budge on the battle, things would've gone differently if she had run. And she was very pointedly trying to ignore the mental images that train of thought was bringing up. This poor kid took enough trouble onto his own shoulders as it was.
"Kai, you didn't bring me anywhere as far as I'm concerned. If anything I asked you to come along and dragged you into this mess in the first place. Regardless, the past is the past and that's how it'll be. We march on to new and better things." With the twins agreeing on getting out, Alicia smiled and started to walk back to the closest town. Still, Kai did have a few points she had to acknowledge. She certainly took his words to heart at any rate.
"Are you alright, Alicia?" her spirit asked with noticeable concern.
"Yeah... I'll be fine shortly." She answered back quietly with a smile. She still ached a bit from the blast against her arm when she was ambushed and the triple shot she got winged by earlier, but she certainly wasn't showing that she was in any pain right now. "It really is crazy though, a whole different world practically under everyone's noses. A brave, new world that defies all expectations and possibilities..."
She took a moment to pull her locket out and open it up, smiling at the family photo taken with in. "And even through it all, my family is with me. Just like we promised so many years ago..."
"... You feel strength from them even worlds apart...? Your bond is tighter then even I anticipated..."
Alicia just nodded and put her locket away, sighing softly. She kept an eye on Kai though, not wanting to miss if he had anything else to say as they went.
