Razed buildings, obliterated cities, countries pretty much out of the map. An interesting landscape, huh? Even if it kinda lost its novelty after the first year or two, sometimes, Mana wondered if that was healthy for her. Was okay for her psyche to be used to the destruction of the surface world, almost if that had been the case since always? That thought invaded her head every now and then, and her reaction was always the same. She shook her head, trying to get rid of it for good.
Things were as they were. Wondering if it was fine for them to be this was a waste of precious time and energy.
Why things were this was is an entirely different question, though. One whose answer she knew, and that was forever engraved in her memory. A tale of ambition and thirst of power, gone awfully wrong.
It happened approximately two years ago. The meddling of humankind with forces they did not fully understood and a couple of smartasses that thought that they had found a new type of weapon ended up in an attempt to artificially attract a large group of digimon to this world; why they knew about the existence of the Digital World and Digimon? That's a mystery that persists to this day. Long story short, their experiment went as bad as it could go; the gateway they opened connected this world directly to the Dark Area, and the pain the digimons endured as they were forcefully extracted from their world was so intense that they essentially went berserk as soon as they set a foot in this world. A pretty good recipe for disaster, huh?
Of course, most tamers nearby went and tried to control the situation as soon as the gate began functioning, mostly due to all nearby digivices going haywire for pretty obvious reasons. The catch? It really wasn't that easy to stop; while at first, only rookies and such emerged, that changed really quickly. Soon enough, ultimates and even megas were spewing forth endlessly.
The decision of surgically removing the spawning point also came in kind of late; morals and the desire to try to evacuate the area before blowing it up resulted on the situation growing totally and definitely out of control; when the deal was finally done, it was simply too late. Hordes of berserk digimon were already rampaging about, extending themselves faster than any plague and destroying entire cities in their wake.
But there was still hope, right? What about the digidestined? They'd surely try to fix this mess, right? Well, they weren't. Even if most of them desired the best for this world, others were tempted by their own personal ambitions to remain neutral, or even to directly oppose the closing of the gateway. And that's how the current situation came to be. Interesting, huh?
"She should stop writing that diary. It is such a waste of time..." Suzuran seemed to be kinda impatient and grouchy. Well, she was that way pretty much always, but today she seemed to be on a especially anxious mood. "I want to get out of this trashcan already."
Like most surviving humans, Mana and her partners had taken refuge from the rampaging digimon underground. In this case, in one of the army's anti-bomb refuges. That had been a pretty good idea, especially since the place seemed to be mostly deserted. They had dealt with unwanted visitors every now and then, but way less than she'd have imagined in any other place.
"Let her be. At any pace, you will have plenty of entertainment today. Waiting a moment will not kill you, sister." Ayaka's voice was a reflection of serenity, her will already steeled. This could very well be their final voyage, but she had already accepted that as a possibility, and didn't have any regrets about it. If anything, she was grateful with whichever higher entity that she could spend these moments with the beings she appreciated the most.
"Fine, fine. Hey, Mana! You ready? Hopefully you are not having any last minute doubts. That would be really unfortunate."
The girl seemed to not to pay attention to the fairy at first; she finished writing off on that small notebook and after closing it, she looked at Suzuran with a small, content smile just as she stood up.
"Why would I?" She responded almost naturally. "This is our call. It's all but natural for us to accept it. Fear won't hold me back, and I expect exactly the same for you both."
She giggled a bit at her own solemn speech. She definitely wasn't one of those inspiring leaders, but pretending felt nice.
"I don't need to ask you if I'm right, though. You seem to be looking forward to this, so... why don't we begin? The stage is set up for us. Time to shine."
Life shone its brightest as the shadow of death hovered over it, after all. Just like Mana's D-Arc.
[M A T R I X E V O L U T I O N]
The girl's body merged with Ayaka's, just as Suzuran underwent her own evolution, all the way to Convallariamon. Both the fairy and the god man digimons gazed at each other. Already knowing what to do. Their plan was extremely simple, yet good enough for it to grant them enough time.
"Ready?"
"Sure, just tell me when we are good to go."
With each second, Suzuran's toxic nature penetrated Proserpimon's frame more and more. While at first she was able to shrug it off as if it were nothing, as the time passed, she could already could tell that this plan was as dangerous as they intended it to be. Maybe even more.
"Now!" Suzuran's toxicity seemed to extend as she said those words, hoping that'd be convincing enough on top of her words.
Finally! The digimon caressed her gakubiwa as energy surged through her fingers. This was the beginning of it; after this, there was no way to turn back.
Not that they intended to do so, anyway.
A bright green flash later, both digimons were gone from sight, even if Suzuran's Toxic Visage somewhat lingered on the room.
Right afterwards, they were there.
The epicenter of this madness had a very distinct characteristic. The whole neighborhood was infested with both wild digimons and tamers fighting each other; why? It was rumored that the last surviving piece of the Gateway that provoked this infestation had the power to control most of the digimons that went through it back in the day. If those stories were true, then they'd be able to finally stop this apocalypse and let whatever was left of humanity to emerge again. Not the brightest plan, and the three of them concluded that it was mostly a trap, but they wouldn't know unless they found out, right?
And they were kind of tired of hiding around, just surviving. If they had to die in this place, at least they'd go out with a flash and not wither until they faded.
Proserpimon's now sickly self appeared immediately in the middle of what looked like a large-scale fight. Suzuran some distance away from her; enough for her to not to directly attract attention, as opposed for the super mega that had just manifested itself.
First action? Bolster Suzuran's power even further, of course. She was already grinning viciously, already knowing what would happen.
In an instant, Prosepimon's first score played on its full power, augmenting both hers and Suzuran combat abilities, just for Suzuran to focus on her instants afterwards. Taking its epicenter on Ayaka's position, a gigantic poisonous cloud took form, immediately affecting pretty much anyone on the fight that was breaking out right now.
Yes, there were some humans in her radius, but if they were on this place, that meant that they were ready to meet their demise. Thinking about collateral damage was what had provoked this whole situation, and Mana already had decided to rescind her morals if that would end it.
The poisonous cloud mere touch was enough to decimate most lower level digimons and to greatly weaken anything that above that. A success...
"Now..." Holding that amount of poison on her body definitely had taken its toll on the biomerged digimon, but she was still ready to continue. "Let's go!"
The recently carved path towards the entrance of what once had been a scientific complex was just in front of them. Suzuran didn't lose time in evolving into her most advanced form too. While seeing hundreds of enemies succumb to her poisons had been fun, now was when the true battle would begin, and she needed to be on her most powerful form to deal with this.
They hurried through the ruins of the building, chasing an strange emanation of energy that could very possibly be what they were looking for. What they found, however, was probably not what they expected.
An small, oval stone. Nothing otherwordly about it besides the cold, dark light it emanated. Totally unguarded, unprotected. Why? Why nobody had claimed it before? Could it be that...
"It corrupted its previous owners. That explains why there were moments of relative peace in between this chaos. What are you going to do about it, Mana?"
Was she above the corruption that this thing could instill in her? Probably not. Given enough time, it'd probably consume her, just like it had done before. She was far from almighty, even if this was probably the cusp of her power.
But what if...
I want to discuss this with Suzu, Aya. Are you fine with it?
Are you considering it, Miss? Very well. I trust in your judgment
Extending her hand, Mana's consciousness passed forth between one twin and the other. Suzuran smiled at this; she had a good idea of what was about to happen.
Do you want to pick it up, huh? Tell me more about it
I think that everyone before us who had this thing ended up dead because they resisted to this thing's influence. They thought themselves as superior as their hubris was their downfall. I know that I'm not going to win, but what about a tie? This world is hopeless anyway. I wouldn't mind having some fun until it lasts. You?
My thoughts exactly. Are you sure you want to do this? You can still step back if you want to.
Not a coward. Let's do this.
Unceremoniously, Suzuran approached the small black stone and picked it up.
On the following months, the world's situation became somewhat better. The feral digimon began to recede and their radius of action became just one country; the one that had originated this mess.
The rest of the world was left for the humanity to take again, at a price, of course.
Things were as they were. Wondering if it was fine for them to be this was a waste of precious time and energy.

Dear World Leaders,
I must admit that this first year is looking pretty good. I thank you personally for rising up to the occasion and leading your people towards a shining future. I hope to see rebuilt cities soon and for you to follow my suggestions about them. Thus far, the tribute I've received has been pleasant enough, but take into consideration that it probably won't be enough after your countries get back into their feet and plan your economies and budgets accordingly.
I'll be visiting soon ❤
Sincerely,
Your Ruler.
