Suzuran was accustomed to being reckless, even if she didn't see it as recklessness. Arrogance, maybe? She undoubtedly thought she was capable of accomplishing the feat Elliot had been struggling to perform with ease. She was just that superior to a simple human being, wasn't she?
She just dived down without looking back; even if those flying lizards caught up with her, she still had an ace under her sleeve. Would she be fast enough to outpace them without it or not?
Ayaka was acting as mission control by this point. She was certain that her sister could take care of herself, but wasn't as sure of Elliot and Mana, and that's what concerned her the most. If any of the Wingdramon decided to take notice of them, she was ready to deter them already
Right behind the second group, the fairy also began to move. What would come from this gambit? Time to find out.

By now, all three members of the party had fanned out in different directions. Suzuran continued to dart one way drawing the majority of the hostile dragon pack and their fearsome leader. Ayaka had darted another way, pulling another group off of the slower-flying Elliot and giving him some much needed breathing room. That left about a quarter of the dragons following Elliot, who had been sure to take advantage of the billowing of his robes and plumage of his wings to throw their accuracy off. Whenever one swooped in to bite at him, it was left clawing past fabric or getting a mouthful of feathers. These onslaughts hurt, sure, but they were better than his flesh directly being chewed on.
The dragons chasing Ayaka were rather dumb and uncoordinated, seemingly focused on rushing her down in as quick of a time as possible. They shouldered at each other like a stampede of rhinos, each being hell-belt on being the ones to knock Ayaka out of the sky. However, it was not the strongest of the quartet but the smallest and most slippery that was able to make its way to the head of the pack, launching forward to directly lunge at Ayaka's gut.
Suzuran had been flying circles around the Wingdramon earlier, but it was starting to catch wise to her antics. It roared, and the Coredramon Blue surrounding it immediately started to fan out. There were three on each side, and each moved not to attack Ayaka but instead to try and box her in. The Wingdramon itself had fallen still, training its eyes on Ayaka to try and discern her location. Then, once it felt comfortable, it lunged forward with a hellish shriek. The lance on its back emerged at full force, and with the Coredramon trying to surround her dodging may not have been such a simple task.
Elliot, for his part, found himself flying towards the floor of the trial at increasingly great speed. He turned to the Coredramon surrounding him and produced his Reluctant Cudgel anew, holding it up to the pack of four to try and blind them. They reeled back in agony, and with a heavy throw of his arm Elliot sent the cudgel flying away. When their vision returned to them they noticed the luminous stick before they had noticed Elliot's body, and they promptly flew after it in a fury.
That gave Elliot all the time to head to the floor of the trial, which looked like a miniature sun up close. He turned his eyes to avoid blinding himself as he set Mana down, then took the previous rooms' items in hand to look at the curiously. A brazier and a mirror? What could he do with these? Was there another item here he was missing? "Hurry, hurry . . ." he muttered to himself, his looking becoming increasingly frantic.

The situation was getting direr with each passing second, wasn't it? Well, that was kinda to be expected, abd considering the party's circumstances, that was kind to be expected, wasn't it? The numbers meant that every combatant was absolutely overwhelmed, and it would be just a matter of time before they fell to their attackers. Or before Elliot passed his test, whatever happened first.
Now, what could they do about it? Both Ayaka and Suzuran knew that retaliating would probably let themselves be more open to their attackers, and it wasn't like that was the case already! Injuries began to pile up, from near misses and grazing blows from what they identified as the more damaging attacks to more direct strikes coming from every other angle.
Yet, there wasn't much to do except to continue this elaborate dance. With any luck, the distraction would be good enough. Mana's face was the definition of worry.
They had reached the floor in relative safety, even if Elliot had to fend off some attackers. However, they were in the face of a new challenge. Now that they were at ground level, the HolyAngemon seemed to be scrambling for an item that he was missing... maybe? The girl herself wasn't sure, yet her senses quickened; a two pair of eyes could see better than one, right?
Even though she had no idea how HolyAngemons could see with that thing over their heads.

Elliot looked at the three items before him, worriedly glancing at the battles raging in the skies above. Ayaka and Suzuran looked to be quickly getting overwhelmed, and the swarm of Coredramon above were tossing around the Reluctant Cudgel to tear it apart in a feeding frenzy. He knew that his time was numbered, and yet nothing that he could think of doing was working. Mirror . . . brazier . . . orb . . . what was he even supposed to do with all of this? Was he supposed to just claim the orb like the other two items? As he reached for it his hand just passed through, as if literally slipping past light. Clearly, that was off the table.
Finally, in a fit of desperation, he turned the mirror to the orb. Immediately it reflected the light away in a thin beam. The Coredramon above continued their business, but Wingdramon himself had taken notice by that point. His huge, hefty wingbeats stopped, and with a predatory screech he dive bombed over towards Elliot and Mana. This only redoubled Elliot's efforts, and he started turning the mirror towards anything he could think of. The ceiling? Nope. The floor? Nope. The Wingdramon itself? All that did was expose the maddened look in its eye, flecks of spit shooting from its mouth as it roared again.
Finally, Elliot turned the light towards the brazier, and was surprised to see it alight in a pale blue flame. In mere seconds the small blue embers roared into a blaze, and Elliot could faintly make out the silhouette of a dragon within it. Desperate and out of options, he charged the blue flame. It almost seemed to consume him, the previously pitch-black room now cast in a soft azure glow.
For a while, things looked grim. Elliot was gone, completely lost in the flames. The illuminated room revealed just how much the Coredramon pack outnumbered Suzuran, Ayaka, and Mana. And the Wingdramon was continuing his approach furiously, claws flexing in anticipation as he prepared to skewer Mana with his back-mounted lance. His shadow settled over her as he prepared to make his descent, letting out a shriek of anticipation.
The shriek was met by another roar as a blue blur launched past Mana. A new Digimon, an AeroVeedramon, burst from the flame to come to her aid. He launched at the Wingdramon in a vicious elbow strike, parrying its lance with the long, steel blade on the back of his elbow. He held the parry for as long as he could, turning slightly over his shoulder to peer at Mana and flash her a thumbs up. "Didn't think I'd leave you hanging, did you?" he asked, voice far gruffer than before but still unmistakable as Elliot's.
After holding this clinch long enough to keep Wingdramon at bay, Elliot surged forward to punch the dragon right in the face. It was sent sprawling back, letting out a hateful growl as it touched down on the ground. Unlike its more amicable brothers, Wingdramon didn't seem willing to let this fight go. However, the Coredramon did stop with this new arrival, halting their fly-by assaults on Ayaka and Suzuran to turn and watch the battle.
For a few precious seconds, Elliot and the Wingdramon turned to face each other. And then, each flying with enough speed to kick up a sonic boom, they charged.

Everything was happening so fast. Elliot scrambling for whatever was supposed to be at the bottom of the room, Mana gazing at the approaching Wingdramon with worry etched on her every feature; she still held hopes for this situation to turn out for the best, yet the odds of that happening weren't super high at the moment, and they seemed to be decreasing more and more with each passing second.
The fight raged on, and Suzuran was getting tired of that; after distancing herself from her sister, in a flash; her perfect level manifested itself. And instead of being a distraction, she began to take a more active role at facing her enemies; if they wanted to play rough, rough they'd get.
While the flash of light happened and the twins noticed how outnumbered they were, both began to take their roles more seriously, Ayaka being quick to discern the imminent danger to her partner's life. Bracing for the imminent impact, both her body and Mana's digivice began to emit a soft, green glow... that promptly stopped as soon as Elliot, now AeroVeedramon, defended her from the attempt at her life.
Her immediate reaction was to sigh in relief. Apparently, the spirit had been gotten, yet... the fighting hadn't ended. This would be their true test, wouldn't it? To see if they could beat all those dragons, or something like that? It seemed fair.
They'd have to take this one seriously, then.

Wingdramon's speed was superior to that of Elliot's, its slick, aerodynamic frame letting it cover three feet for every one that the AeroVeedramon could. It was upon Elliot terrifyingly quickly, its flesh parting again as its back-mounted lance jabbed out at him. However, AeroVeedramon's maneuverability was top notch, and Elliot was able to easily barrel roll to the side the maddened Wingdramon. He fired a blast of dragonfire into its flank as he did so, lighting up the cave in a flash of bright blue. The Wingdramon tumbled to the side of the cave wall, Elliot wasting no time in flying towards it in a brutal elbow drop. One solid hit, and this could be all over.
Unfortunately, his approach had been scouted out by the Wingdramon. Metal impacted metal as the lance launched out once again, leaving Elliot caught hanging in midair. The Wingdramon grinned viciously, then launched a powerful cone of sonic breath right into Elliot's stomach. He tumbled into the sky, the Wingdramon flying up after him and biting down hard on his leg. It swung its head back a few times to disorient Elliot, then flung him down all the way to the cave floor. Were Elliot not able to thrust his wings out and catch himself in mid-descent, such a rough landing could have messed him up really badly. Instead it just left him skidding on the ground, glaring up defiantly at the Wingdramon. If it was for Mana's sake, there was no chance in hell Elliot would give up the ghost so soon. He'd keep this up and keep her safe until the bitter end.
Or, at least, that's how it looked on the outside. A far different conversation was raging on in Elliot's head.
Look, kid. I can't just keep covering for you like this. The voice inside Elliot's head, rather than the melodic monotone of MagnaAngemon, was far more animated. It was almost like that of an exasperated older sibling, less trying to convince Elliot and more almost making a demand of him. It was also far more pointed than most of Elliot's in-transformation thoughts. Usually they were more like pushes in a certain direction, some soft and some overwhelming. But this? This was something else.
Lost on what to do next, Elliot could only think back at the voice. However, much to his surprise, words weren't coming to the surface of his brain. Instead, it was more like a direct look into his feelings. He could feel fear shrinking away from the surface, desperately scrambling away from the smallest sliver of something cruel and vengeful. Surrounding this was the dark clouds of regret, swallowing up his every other thought and choking out his own ability to focus. Finally came a haze of helplessness settling over the mess, all as Elliot settled into a body he no longer had any control over.
A sigh echoed through the mess of his mindscape. Now the AeroVeedramon was holding its wings aloft like a matador, using them to wave away dive bombing runs from the Wingdramon. Another thought followed after the echo. You really think I'm the one you're scared of here? He could feel a tight pressure settling down on his head, as if chains were wrapping around him. 'Cause I can sure as hell tell you, beasts ain't your issue. We both know your time with Gargoylemon's not the only time you lost it.
As Wingdramon roared in fury, Elliot could hear another sound overlaying it. Static, organized into the voices of a hundred different heads. The voices turned to gagging, suffocating. Once more, Elliot felt that disquieting peace settle over him, but it barely had time to settle before the next vision emerged. As blasts of flame and sonic roars collided with one another, the wisps they left almost seemed to twist into eyes. When the wisps faded to cinders, Elliot could swear that he saw red wisps of data mixed among them.
That's right. Even MagnaAngemon, and he's got the patience of a saint. Literally! With that thought it came together, and Elliot felt a pang of guilt stab deep into his chest. Remembering his past weaknesses wasn't even the worst part of it all. No, it was the fact that his current spirit was completely right. The common denominator there hadn't been the overwhelming power of beast spirits, or even the instincts of Digimon overwhelming his own.
No, he had been the problem all along.
The moment of clarity was just enough to cause AeroVeedramon to skid to a halt, only for it to snap back into action and duck under a vicious talon strike. Seriously? Are you trying to get us killed? the spirit barked, the thought snapping Elliot out of his funk and causing him to once more turn his eye to the battle. I get it, okay? You've seen some shit. Way more shit than a kid your age should. And I know you're no fighter. But you really think this is the best way of doing it? Hiding from fights so much that when push comes to shove, you've got no way of dealing with it? You don't gotta have the heart of a warrior, but what you've got here's the worst of both worlds. And it's gonna get people hurt if yo let it fester like this.
I've got your back. We all do. But only if you're gonna stand for yourself. So what's it gonna be, kid? Are you getting us out of this mess?
Elliot squeezed his eyes shut. Or, at least, he felt like he did. When he opened them again, he was now well and truly within AeroVeedramon's body. He still wasn't fully sure what he wanted to do, but the least he could do after such a pep talk was to accept the spirit in earnest, right? Above, Coredramon Blue scattered in all directions from Suzuran's furious attacks. Below, Mana and Ayaka were waiting. And in front of him, a worn and battered Wingdramon was glaring with hatred in its eyes. His spirit had taken him far, but he knew it'd be all for nothing if he didn't prove his own merits here. He hunkered down into a fighting stance, determination glinting in his eye, and motioned for the Wingdramon to come at him.
"Let's do this right this time.

Huh, as funny as it was, things had slowly hedged towards their situation improving progressively. Was that due to Elliot's evolution? Was that due to other factors outside their reach, or was that about Suzuran finally deciding to stop playing nice and spreading the pain among their pursuers? In all honesty, Mana didn't know, and didn't care to find out as long as things kept going the way they were.
Regarding the man himself? Well, as with anyone who had just spirit evolved, the boy surely had some issues in regards to controlling the newly acquired evolution. But that was fine, as far as she could see? He could definitely hold his ground, just like Ayaka and Suzuran did.
For good measure, however —and to make things a little more interesting, honestly—, Ayaka decided to boost both AeroVeedramon's and Suzuran's abilities. Given that they suddenly had stopped being the fight's focus, that meant that they could focus on the digimons that were, right?
Letting the supporting cast roam freely was something that couldn't end well... for the enemy digimons, of course.

Especially once she had been empowered by her sister, Suzuran was a force to be reckoned with. Any Coredramon that tried to approach her was left seared by her toxins and sliced up by the power of nature. Even as they tried to give her wide berth, it was too late. The fairy was in the zone now, and her might was uncontested by all besides the currently-occupied Wingdramon.
Unfortunately, Elliot was far less dominant in his battle than Suzuran was in hers. In fact, "doing it right this time" seemed like a downgrade if anything. Whereas before Elliot's strikes came with a crisp confidence that was foreign to the boy's normal nature, now doubt showed through the cracks in the foundation. Elliot's fighting stance shrank to a cautious guard, and Wingdramon had seized this opportunity with reckless abandon.
To your left.
Coming from below.
Block it. He'll be wide open.
All the while, AeroVeedramon gave its advice. While no longer taking hold of the reins itself, it stayed nestled safely in the back of Elliot's head to monitor the situation. It was almost as if Elliot was in a high-stakes shadow boxing match. Each lean to the side stopped Elliot's heart as Wingdramon's lance went whistling past his ears. Each claw strike caused his knees to buckle as he desperately pushed against the Wingdramon's strength with his own. And at times-
Right, now!
-The advice wasn't even right, Elliot's quick hop to the right leaving him open for a vicious headbutt to the stomach. He slid back, clutching his gut with eyes widened from shock
You feel that? Your thoughts can betray you, too, the AeroVeedramon warned, its voice slowly fading into the background. I'm trying to tell you, kid. You need to stand on your own. Trust your own instincts. 'Cause in the end? That's the only thing that won't steer you wrong. And then there was nothing but silence. Somehow, Elliot felt like AeroVeedramon wouldn't be coming back today.
Wingdramon snarled, immediately shooting forward to capitalize on Elliot's slowed pace. At the speeds it was moving at, Elliot knew watching and waiting would just give him a headache. Instead, against all good judgment, he squeezed his eyes shut. He spread his legs into a widened stance and held his hands high in the air. And then he waited.
As he felt a gust of wind dance across his scales, he shot into action. He ducked low, then shot up, spearing the Wingdramon right in the abdomen. His powerful wings unfurled, Elliot pushing across the ground to launch himself high into the sky. Then he briefly let go of Wingdramon, adjusting his grab to pin the dragon's wings behind its back. Just like that, Wingdramon's advantage had evaporated. It thrashed madly in Elliot's arms, each flex of its wings only making Elliot hold his clinch harder. Its back-mounted spear, normally its most potent weapon, was left uselessly sticking out into the. Its arms, left trapped at a bad angle, could only lightly slap at Elliot's sides. At this point it could only count on its gnashing jaws, stealing a bite to Elliot's shoulder in the process.
However, this plan too had its limits. After the initial assault Elliot caught on, using his horned head to keep Wingdramon's own in check. Any further biting was met with the threat of a pointed horn to the throat, leaving all of Wingdramon's offensive output crucially limited.
At this point, Ayaka's empowerment set in for Elliot, and a devious idea came to his mind. He crested to the apex of his flight, then arched his back to flip it around. If before he and Wingdramon were hurtling into the air, now they were heading right back towards the ground. Seeing the writing on the wall, the Wingdramon began thrashing all the faster, furiously scratching and clawing at Elliot to try and break his grip. It was starting to hurt like hell, but Elliot refused to let go now. All he needed was a few precious seconds. How fast had he flown up, again? It had been fifteen seconds . . . ten . . . five . . . four . . . three . . .
Now!
Elliot squeezed down on Wingdramon's chest hard, its spear reflectively launching out of its back. Not only did this make it land before Elliot did, but it also left the Wingdramon stuck right into the ground. It thrashed in a blind fury, breathing cones of sonic energy in every direction. Elliot kept his guard up all the while, waiting for the right opportunity to open up in the Wingdramon's guard.
As it turned its head a little too far down, and a little too far to the left, Elliot rushed forward. The power of nature swirled around his fist like a gauntlet, and in one last, brutal punch to the solar plexus Elliot sent Wingdramon spiraling away. The dragon, spear and all, launched into a nearby wall, its head lolling to the side as it collapsed into a heap.
And just like that, it was over. Any Coredramon that hadn't already fallen were sent scattering at the fall of their leader, and the darkness that settled around the temple seemed to follow them away. Now Elliot, Mana, and her fairies were left alone, sitting in a rounded room positively covered in hieroglyphics. Perhaps if anyone was paying attention they would notice an elaborate tapestry depicting a familiar trio of dragons, each governing over the land, the seas, and the skies. However, Elliot was far too beat to even pay it much mind. He sighed as every muscle in his body unclenched itself, walking cautiously up to Mana.
"Ha . . . looks like we did it, huh?" he asked, barely able to speak between pants. "Been way too long since I've fought like this. I think I'm gonna . . ." Yep. That was the sound of Elliot fainting, his Digimon form fading away as he practically fell right onto Mana. Hopefully she'd be prepared, or this'd be an awkward landing for both of them!

It had been... a trip, in all honesty; but everything had come more or less according to the plan, hadn't it? Even if they had sustained injuries and withstood a fair bit of stress in their lengthy tests and fights.
Pondering about it for a second, it seemed like it was ages ago when she was saving Elliot from the Triceramon, and now they were here, victorious, but not unscathed.
Mana held the boy's unconscious body gingerly as Ayaka and Suzuran descended, the latter devolving to a more safe-for-work form before getting too close.
"Hmph. This was not even entertaining." She lamented, a bit of an unsavory expression in her face. "It was an annoyance at best, but at least the human boy got his prize."
Not even bothering to entertain the fairy's caustic temperament, the girl just stared at her good-natured partner. "Can we head back, Aya-chan? I think I need a nap."
That seemed like a great idea, and not even Suzuran could complain about that. "Let us do that. I think we have earned a moment of respite. Time to head back."
And so they did. This adventure was something the three members of the ensemble would remember, even if not for the same reasons [Exit]
