Job Title: City Maintenance
Word Count: 1356
After taking some advice from his new friend Cion to heart, Toki made his way to Whitewater City in order to help with a rebuilding effort going on. A recent storm had swept through the region and as a result quite a few things are in desperate need of repair or outright replacing. As he walked around the city and assessed the damage, Toki was impressed by the various citizens who contributed to the effort. No matter how difficult it was for them, they kept going and rebuild from what was torn down.
He navigated the streets and carefully avoided getting in the way of people as they worked until he eventually came across some Ogremon in a plaza. They turn to look at him “Oi there. Ya here to help with the rebuildin’?” one of them asked. Another Ogremon nudged the one who spoke “He don’t have a partner. You think he’s one of them fancy Spirit Users?” the tone seemed threatening and wary as they leered at him “I think you’re right…”
Toki gulped and glanced between the two of them before one of them bellowed out “Gahahaha! In that case we might as well be cousins! Glad to have ya on board. Now then, we got ourselves a few canopies that need readjusting…some of them are too bent to be usable anymore, but we got replacements ready. If ya can, go haul in some lumber to get the support beams ready, but that can come later.” He said.
He still seemed intimidated by the Ogremons presence, but they seemed nice enough “I’ll start with the lumber and help adjust the canopies afterwards…do you two know Cion? She helped me pick this job.” He said to them.
They looked at each other and seemed positively delighted “Oi now if you’re a friend of hers, we’re definitely glad to have ya. Go on then, show us what ya got.” They were definitely happy to hear Cion’s name and had all the more faith in Toki’s abilities.
With that, Toki began his day of work. He began by going to the outskirts of town where the lumber was being produced. Thankfully, he was strong enough and had the stamina to carry the finished lumber across town, though he was extra careful so he didn’t accidentally break anything. He went wherever he was beckoned and placed the wood down for the craftsmen to get to work. It was tiring, but as he saw how appreciative the people were for his deliveries, he felt validated and continued.
During one of his round trips, he looked up and saw a young Digimon stuck on a rooftop. He thought quickly, wondering how he could help, and got an idea. He took the longest piece of lumber and leaned it against the side of the building “You’re okay! I’ll hold onto this, just come down carefully, alright? Easy does it…” he encouraged as the Digimon slowly made its way down the makeshift ramp. Upon making it to the floor, it happily thanked Toki before going on its way. Toki waved and called out “Be careful from here on!” before getting back to work.
After several lumber deliveries, he noticed some Digimon struggling to hang up and nail a new sign to their business. “Excuse me? Do you need any help with that?” Toki asked. They looked at him, then at each other before nodding. Toki helped them get the sign into place and struggled as it was heavier than it looked, but eventually got it in place. He hammered the nails in the designated spots and sighed in relief when it was secured. The Digimon thanked him and gave him a few bits for his work, which he gladly accepted. “Good luck with your business! I’ll be sure to drop by later and see what you got.” He smiled, feeling really good about himself today. There was something peaceful about this simple but laborious task. It felt like he was making a small difference, but a significant one.
He sat down to take a break back at the plaza after plenty of lumber has been distributed across the city. He took a bottle of water from his backpack and took a long drink of it as the Ogremon sat by him taking their own breaks “Ya doing good work, pal. Couldn’t help but notice ya helped out some others around town along the way. Loads got problems here, so it’s good to see ya looking out for the little guys.” He said. “Though we got a little bit of a problem. The canopies we want to put up will probably just break under heavy rain or wind again…got any ideas how we can keep that from happening, pal?” he asked Toki.
Toki thought about this for a moment. “Can I see these canopies?” he asked. The Ogremon led him to various places around the city where they’ve been hung up. Toki looked at them and rattled the metal rods holding them in place “These seem a bit loose…maybe you could replace the rods with something sturdier? And affix them a little tighter to the foundation. If you add a few more to give you more places to tie the cloth, it probably won’t tear off in the wind or collapse with water….” He explained, hoping he was doing a good job.
“That ain’t a bad idea. We’ll give it a shot, thanks! One last thing and we’ll let ya go. There’s a scrap pile we need to clean out before the day’s done, so could you help us toss some of the junk?” Ogremon said. Toki nodded, glad to help wherever he could. “Alright, good on ya! Let’s get to it.”
The group makes their way across town. Shops were starting to open for business this time of day, another testament to the hardy nature of those who lived here. It’s hard to believe a storm came through since the sun shined brightly today. It wasn’t too hot or too cold this time of year, so Toki felt rejuvenated and ready to work.
Once they gathered around, the Ogremon instructed Toki on how to organize the scrap disposal. Wood in the green colored bin, and everything else in the black bin. He looked around at the pieces of metal strewn about, worried he would cut his hands “Do you have any gloves I could use?” he asked. They looked at each other and shrugged, prompting a sigh from Toki. He’d just have to be extra careful. He took the metal pieces one at a time, keeping his hands away from the edges as he tossed them into the containers. The destroyed scraps of wood and branches were easier to clean up at least as he carried bundles to the green bin. After about an hour of work, the place was beginning to look serviceable again. With one last bundle of scrap, Toki wiped his hands clean, hoping he wouldn’t get any blisters from this work. That’s another investment along with his manga recommendations.
The Ogremon pat him on the back roughly “Gahaha! Excellent work, kid! We got this place cleaned up good. Ya sure know how to pull your own weight. Feel free to stay anywhere ya’d like. We’ll put in a good word for ya so they’ll let ya stay for free for now.” He said, definitely pleased with Toki’s work today.
Toki smiled at the Ogremon and bowed at them “Thank you for letting me help out around here. It was nice.” They shook hands and went off to do their own thing while Toki overlooked the city from the plaza. There was likely a lot of work that still needed to be done, but he felt like he had done enough for now. The Digimon appreciated his efforts, so now he could go get some rest with a clear conscious. He sat back on a bench and pulled something from his backpack. The first volume of a manga. A classic, he was told. Happily, he flipped through the pages and enjoyed the rest of the calm tropical day.
Job graded! Bits added.
