Being lost is not a pleasant experience. Far from actually and she was regretting the idea of coming here already. Ioana sighed as she stopped on the twisted and winding path all she had wanted was to train their sense of direction. It was an important asset to have when exploring. The underbrush so thick it was hard to move anywhere else though. Even the trees themselves acted like walls. So even flying types would have a hard time navigating the thick boroughs.
Mihai knew they were lost. He had known for quite some time. He had recommended using the teleporter and just returning home. Yet she was sure they could figure out the right path to get out. He had to admit it was good practice anyway.
It tested the awareness of their surroundings. He would be marking the trees with his army knife but the trees were all pretty scarred already. Dozens of markings lined the trunks signifying those that had come before them and had also gotten lost. At least they wouldn't have to worry about starving to death. They could return to the human world through the digivice and just use the station next time so they wouldn't be returned here.
"These directions are terrible,"she grunted looking at the markings herself.
"Tyrant's Labyrinth,"Mihai mused. "There a minotaur in here?" He had to wonder how dangerous this place actually is. A lot of markings farther in but very few near the entrance to this place. Made him wonder how many actually made it out alive.
"Maybe, most digimon avoid this place. Too scared to be eaten alive by the forest," Ioana said pondering with symbols to follow.
"Can you be eaten alive,"Mihai said crossing his arms. He honestly wouldn't put it past this place.
"There are a lot of plant types. Wouldn't surprise me if they decided to make this place home. Drag people off with their vines," Ioana said her eyes sparkling slightly. She knew he wouldn't be scared though. It wasn't in his nature.
"Mhm," Mihai responded with a smile. His gaze wandered down the path to his left.
Then he paused in all actions. A sight beheld him and it was unusual since he hadn't seen anything like it before. It wasn't that rare to see a flower but even from this distance the oranges and reds that made them up made it look like it was on fire.
"Stay here a moment," he said wandering down the path.
Like hell she was. Ioana followed after him pausing just inside the path they had come from as he bent down to look at a flower. She cocked her head not quite sure what he was playing at.
"Care to explain," she said seeing him look at her and roll his eyes at the fact she didn't listen.
"We haven't passed any of these flowers before,"Mihai said bluntly. "They would have been easy to remember with such a beautiful color." He pondered picking a few for his sister.
He reached out touching the stalks gingerly at first and examining the leaves before picking a few. It wouldn't harm anything to pick a few flowers. They would make a nice centerpiece for a while.
He stood and looked farther down the path to see more. He had to wonder if they were perhaps markers for those who made it onto the right path. Or the wrong one. It could just as easily lead to a trap.
"What do you think," he asked soberly.
"Better to follow something than nothing," she said following his gaze. "Push comes to shove the worse that can happen is we get attacked and have to run."
"That's my guess," he mused. She was right though it was a better lead than any.
So they began following the flowers their bright colors standing out against the lush green foliage. Neither were sure it was the right path but both were confident in their abilities. Push come to shove they could make a hasty retreat back using the same method.
Something they didn't have to do just yet as they walked into a large grove. Dozens of the flowers making a small meadow of fire. He really did wish this world wasn't so dangerous. He'd love to show sights like this to his siblings.
"I smell something strange," Ioana commented her eyes wandering the place suspiciously. Her comment making Mihai take a more serious approach to this place as well. If he knew anything it was to trust her instincts.
It took a moment but he spotted what was out of place. A thin piece of metal was sticking out from the center of the grove. He looked at her a moment before nodding and walking forward. His eyes not leaving the object til he was able to tell what it was. The orange and red color of the egg having hidden it well.
"It's an egg,"Mihai said stopping not wanting to get any closer. If it's an egg then that meant there was a mother nearby right? His gaze roamed the grove scouring for its hiding parent.
Ioana continued forward after a second to get a good look at it herself. Not being as tall as Mihai it had been hard for her to even begin to notice it until they were upon it. It was odd she had never seen an egg quite like it. The horn made her think of tsunomon and yet she knew their eggs didn't look like this. Not to mention the smell. It didn't smell alive.
"I think it's a dud," she said looking back at her wary partner.
"So a trap," Mihai responded and she half nodded to one side unsure. She didn't smell rope or anything else metallic so she couldn't be sure.
"Either way this place is a dead end. Let's head back," Mihai said not willing to risk moving it just in case.
That was when Ioana's ears perked. "Behind you!"
Mihai whirled around staring at the path. Ioana coming up beside him fur bristled as they waited for what she had heard. After a moment a white snake-like digimon appeared before them. It's eyes a light blue but glossed over.
Worst case scenario achieved. Ioana growled at the fact they wouldn't be able to escape with it on the path. Not to mention it didn't quite look right at the moment.
"Split up," Mihai said starting for one side. Ioana nodded and headed for the other. It would only be able to pick one to attack meaning if they played their cards right they could lure it away and then make a run for the path.
It opened its mouth tongue flicking out once then twice. Then it dashed towards Mihai. He was larger he'd fill its belly more. He would ensure its survival till it made it out of here.
So fast, Mihai could barely dodge its gaping maw. The beast sputtering out the dirt from the hole it made. He half crawled half stumbled back over by the egg. Ioana taking her chance to let out her bark. Mihai covered his ears looking back at the snake.
It writhed lightly in discomfort but a snake's ears simply weren't that strong, to begin with. Her bark more an annoyance than an actual attack. It hissed loudly the sound of its own voice serving as a buffer.
It wasn't going to work. Ioana cursed as her partner was still defenseless. After stopping he started to get up but there was no way he was going to get away. She couldn't abandon him either. She rushed forward to meet the white snake head on as it resumed its attack.
Mihai felt more than saw the snake rushing at him. He knew Ioana said the egg might be a dud but if it was alive he wasn't about to let it be crushed either. He snatched it up as he stumbled away and Ioana passed him by.
He turned back to see her latched onto its ear. The snake shaking its head a moment before bringing its flame-shaped tail to bear. Mihai cursed his own weakness as he watched Ioana drop before it struck. She was still to close though and with a lash, she was sent flying.
He froze watching the snake as it suddenly pondered its prey. He wouldn't let it have her. He reached for his swiss army knife. Opening the blade with a flick. He just needed to hit the eye. Someplace weak that would buy them time and give them an advantage.
As though reading his mind the egg shook. The sudden motion surprising him. He looked down just to watch it disappear into his digivice. The thing being worn around his neck for easy access. It glowed faintly in response.
The light caught the snake of guard prolonging its decision. The energy it felt from that light drawing it forward slightly. It had to eat him to get that energy. It wanted to survive.
Mihai took a step back as he looked up only to see the snake having inched closer. Now that it knew he saw it though it surged forward mouth wide. Only to be suddenly slammed away. In its place, a large red boar with its tusks now stained red.
"Ready to get out of here,"her voice sounded different in her ears. They flicked in annoyance as she still tried to get used to this new form.
"Ioana,"Mihai said in almost a whisper.
"Don't gawk and no quips about me putting on weight,"She snorted in response. Yep, definitely her. "Get on." Mihai was quick to oblige as the snake stirred from her surprise attack.
She bolted for the pathway eager to leave their foe behind. The snake watched after them. It's last hope for surviving gone as hunger finally left it unable to move. The wounds from her tusks weakening it farther until it finally just vanished.
"So what was that thing," Mihai asked as she finally paused.
"A Coatlmon," she responded with a grunt. "Why did you grab that egg anyway?"
"You did just say 'think.' If it was really alive I didn't want the poor thing to die," Mihai scratched his head and looked to his digivice sheepishly. It had vanished into it and he didn't know why.
"Guess we should be thankful then," she sighed. "Pretty sure that is what let me do this."
"So how we getting out," Mihai said tucking the device in.
"By going straight ahead," she grinned. The flames around her head flaring up slightly.
"Watch it I'm already bruised I don't need third degree burns too,"Mihai said scooting farther down her back.
"Yeah, yeah, hold on,"She said charging forward through the underbrush. Her flames acting like her shield as it burnt away the branches that would otherwise be scratching her.
Mihai held on tight and laid himself as low as he could without touching the flames in front of him. It was kind of exciting in a way riding her at such a fast pace as this. It would definitely make traveling easier. Though he'd have to be careful about making her angry while she was like this.
He smiled and relaxed as she got them free of the labyrinth. He had dropped the flowers he was going to give his sister though. Maybe they'd return sometime though he was sure neither of them were eager to return any time soon.
