Old Terminus. Places like this had always fascinated Toki for their rich history and secrets hidden within. It wasn’t a complete ruin as there were Digimon who lived here and even more who seemed to be studying something called the prototype. He was here because he had heard from Aylin, his Lunamon friend, that there was something hidden away in a secluded part of Old Terminus that could aid him. “What do you think it could be?” he asked his spirit partner.
“I am not sure. I haven’t sensed any of my other fragments appearing…perhaps they found a fragment of another.” He said. Toki gave him a confused expression, so he explained further “Sometimes when Digimon leave the cycle of rebirth, they leave behind bits of themselves like us spirits. Some of them, however, are so small that they don’t have sentience. These are spirit fractions. I’ve heard of others like us who search for them to add to their possible abilities.”
“Spirit fractions, huh? I hope whoever it belonged to doesn’t mind us using it if that’s the case.” Toki said. The area began to feel a little more cramped as he climbed through some of the more ruined structures of the old city. “Does any of this look familiar to you?”
His spirit pondered for a moment “Some of it…but it’s been so long. I remember there being an old gathering place where many of us would get together and tell stories…it was a comforting time.” He said fondly.
“You have a lot of stories to tell once we get more of your totems.” Toki said with a smile. It was exciting to know more about his spirit. They were friends. Inseparable ones at that, so it only made sense to get along with him. “I bet you’ve got a lot to tell. It would help me understand you more…and I can do better to make you happy that you chose me to use your power.”
The spirit smiled warmly “Toki, you should know that by now I am already happy that I chose you. Please, believe in yourself more. You are growing as a person faster than I ever could have hoped for. Watching that growth brings me much joy.”
Toki blushed and smiled as they approached a ruined structure. A keep? A fortress of old? It was large, whatever it was. Aylin was already there at the little campsite that she had made. When she spotted Toki, the tiny Lunamon hopped up and waddled over “You made it! Hello, Toki! Hello, Antylamon!” she said happily. “So, here’s what I found out. There’s a spirit fragment somewhere in the lower depths of these ruins that I think would be really great for you two to have. A lot of what you have is really close range or mid-range, right? Well, if rumors are to be believed by those who caught a glimpse, this spirit fragment will be a perfect compliment to what you have!” she explained.
Toki looked up at the ruins for a moment “I hope it’s not too cramped in case we have to defend ourselves. Antylamon is really tall…” he mused.
“I checked ahead! There’s plenty of space for Antylamon. It looked like there were a few tests and maybe some traps…so we’ll have to be careful.” She said. She looked a bit worried about what might happen if they weren’t careful. “The rooms looked a little strange though. Like…the tests were designed to be variable dependent on the person. We should be careful, okay?”
Toki nodded “We will be.” He took out the D-Tector and swiped the data swirling around his freehand against the device “Spirit Evolution!” the swirling light engulfed him before growing in size. The light dispersed, revealing the tall, rabbit humanoid “Antylamon!”
Aylin cheered when he spirit evolved. Toki extended one of his hands down at Aylin “Climb onto my back. It’s safer that way.” He said. Aylin climbed up his arm and onto Toki’s back. She held on tight, appreciative that he cared for her safety.
From there, they entered the ruins together. It was surprisingly spacious inside, just like Aylin said. The inside was much different in that much of it somehow looked largely intact, unaffected by the trials of time. Aylin pointed the way to a door “That’s the way. When you pass through that door, it will configure the next room for your trial.”
Toki nodded and walked towards the door, admiring the ancient architecture as he passed by it. He placed a hand on the door and pulled it open. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary yet. When he passed through, however, the room ahead scrambled into various forms of data until a large hallway stretched before him. A small panel appeared at the start of it displaying where he should stand. Cautiously, Toki stepped onto the designated spot and words appeared in the air in front of him.
“Move in the ways the master has taught you, lest you be brought back to the beginning once more.”
Unsure as to what that might mean, Toki took a step forward and felt a sudden jolt before he found himself on the starting platform again. The hallway ahead was lined with square tiles on the otherwise featureless details of the room. Toki tried to jump it, but when he landed, he felt the same uncomfortable jolt as he was shot back to the beginning. “There’s no way it can mean…”
Toki took a stance and rested his fists against his sides. He took a deep breath as he stepped forward with his right foot in a practiced motion while arcing his fist down in a striking motion. He wasn’t forced back. Confused, Toki continued his routine down the hallway. Going through his kata in a different body was certainly different, but muscle memory won out. Step by step, blocking and parrying foes that were not there, he swept his feet forward until finally he stomped at the end of the hallway. “Hah!” he shouted in a heavy exhale.
Aylin pat the top of Toki’s head “That was really cool! It looked kinda familiar though…I can’t remember where I saw it before though.” She said as she tilted her head.
Toki caught his breath for a moment “Well if you’ve seen humans before, some of them might have studied karate like me. That might be where you saw the form.” He said as he continued onward.
The next room looked a little more complex. Again, a message appeared before them. “You have connected with your human half. Now you must connect with the Digimon half. Clear this gauntlet using the abilities at your disposal within the time provided.”
A timer appeared atop the room that began to count down. Without much of a choice, Toki dashed forward “Hold on, Aylin!” he shouted. From the floor, two walls rose from the ground with two points marked on them. In a split second, Toki shouted “Mochi Mallets!” as he hands morphed into large hardened hammers. He jumped forward and slammed the hammers against the spots and the wall effortlessly collapsed.
He continued his sprint through the winding corridors. Ahead was a locked door and bars to the left. On a pedestal was a key “How can I…? Wait…” he slammed his fist against the ground “Sand Grasp!” The ground shifted like sand and snatched the key from the pedestal before whipping it over to Toki. He grabbed it and stopped at the door to unlock it. The key dispersed into data as the door opened for him.
Toki grinned proudly before that expression changed to shock and dread when he saw what looked to be a ballista aimed right at him. It fired a large blunted bolt at him “Whoa! S-Sigil of Stone!” he threw up a stone with strange etchings on it that expanded in size to take the bolt head on. It looked like it wasn’t going to fire again. Toki sighed heavily and continued ahead. “Still plenty of time…we’re going to make it!” he shouted. However, the door started to slide down from above “W-wait, I have time! Hold on!” he sprinted faster, Aylin holding on for dear life. “I’m not going to make it…I have to do something…! Tectonic Spires!” he slammed the hammers at the end of his arms against the ground. The sharp spikes that erupted from the floor lodged against the descending door as Toki picked Aylin up from his back and held her tightly against his chest. He jumped into a slide under the door and made it through.
Aylin jumped up from Toki and hopped up and down “Wow, that was amazing! I was worried for a moment…hey! Look!” she pointed at a glowing figure alone on a pedestal.
More writing appeared “For you who have balanced Human and Digimon in perfect harmony, take your prize. An old warrior who left this as a gift for those worthy.”
Toki looked at the fragment before returning to his human form. “I thank you for this gift. I promise I will use this wisely and proudly.” He swiped the totem with the D-Tector, converting it into data and absorbing it.
Antylamon looked up as he felt the new power “Ah…this is actually familiar to me. Gargomon. They’re part of a related line to my own. They’re different from our usual fighting style, but the close relation should at least ease the strain. Thank you very much for this find, Aylin! This should help us greatly.” He said, smiling warmly at the Lunamon.
Aylin smiled brightly and blushed “T-Thank you Antylamon! If I hear anything else I’ll be sure to let you know! Oh, right. Toki, I remember something about what you did earlier.” She said as she looked at him “There was another human a long time ago. A very long time ago…who moved a lot like you did through that room. I want to say his name was…Yusuke? No…that wasn’t it…Yosuke? Yosuke! That was it! Yosuke Akiyama.” She nodded.
Toki froze for a moment and looked at her with a wide-eyed stare “…E-Excuse me…? Yosuke…Akiyama?” he clenched his fists and bit into one of his knuckles, enough to draw a bit of blood “No. No no no that’s not right. That can’t be right. It isn’t right!”
Aylin looked at him, worried and a little scared “W-what’s wrong, Toki? Did I say something wrong?” she asked.
“That’s my father’s name…no! He is not involved in this! There’s no way he kept that a secret my entire life! Someone like him…” he thought about who he thought his father was. Strict, over disciplinary, controlling…that’s how he was, right? It had to be. Someone like that couldn’t have been in the Digital World and left a positive impact on it. “He’s not the kind of person who would come to a place like this…” he looked over at the way out that opened up for them.
The group left the ruins and Aylin looked up at Toki “H-hey, if you need anything just let me know. You know them, right? Sh-shouldn’t you be happy to know? Are they a bad person?” she asked.
Toki opened up a portal back to the Human World “They…uh…I just…I don’t know! I need to figure something out. I’m sorry, Aylin. Thank you. For everything. I’ll see you later.” He said as he stepped through. Aylin waved goodbye sadly and hoped for the best.
He couldn’t believe it. Everything he knew began to be questioned, even his own memories and thoughts. He had to be sure. It had to be resolved. He got ready to go to the train station where his father, Yosuke, would meet him today.
