A bright blue sky, unmarred by any clouds, the sun shining bright above everyone at the park on this fine Saturday morning. The park wasn't packed, though one would struggle to find any privacy with the number of people here, with groups, pairs, and even the occasional lone person enjoying the fine day at their leisure.
Hideo himself was one of the latter, sitting on a chair he'd been left at, a folded can sitting upon his lap. With it being such a nice day, his parents decided that he should spend some time outdoors - though not without a chaperone. So it was decided that the oldest of his older sisters - Nozomi - would accompany him as a chaperone.
So as usual, once they reached the park, she told him that she had some business to take care of before leaving him on his own. He already had a good idea of the layout of the park, so he was confident he'd be fine on his own. And he knew she'd come back eventually. She never left him here for too long. So now, he sat there, admiring the warmth of the day gently brushed off by a light breeze, listening to the sounds of birds chirping above the indistinct chatter from the other park-goers.
It was only when one of his legs bumped against something metal that his attention moved to what was around him. A table, as he quickly learned by poking around, and a fairly heavy metal one at that. But what really caught his interest was what was on top of the table - a square board, with 64 square-shaped indents on it. Scattered both on and off the board were ceramic objects - fairly weighty for their size. Half of them were uniform in shape and size, while the other half varied greatly, all taller but with unique shapes on top of them; two had crowns, four had round tops with holes in the center, three of them had long faces on the side...
The realization dawned upon him: this was a chess table, and he was holding chess pieces. It was a game he was familiar with; his siblings taught him how to play, and he'd played enough that he could make for a fairly decent opponent.
With little else to do, he decided to set the board up properly. One by one, he placed each piece in its respective spot until every piece was in its place.
At least, that was the plan.
To his misfortune, he had no way of telling the pieces' colors apart from each other, which left each side of the board an uneven combination of white and black pieces. And to further compound the issue, one of the pieces was missing - no matter how much he checked the table, above and below it, he couldn't find it.
The piece actually wasn't far away - it was just laying on its side of the chair opposite of his. Anyone else could notice it in an instant, but for him...it was going to take some time.

Sure. How is Chess played again?Weekend practice was adequate. He hadn't gotten't as much as he had hoped he would out of sparring with his colleagues at the club. It was kind of boring, but it was also routine. He couldn't just stop going now, right? He had been at it for four years; if he just stopped he would not find anything to do.
He had taken a detour from his usual route home through the park, not wanting to get to the empty apartment just yet. He had thought he would be able to get some thinking done while alone at the park, but quickly realized that he had been wrong.
The place was packed, the sun was blazing, his padded uniform was really not doing him favors, and the sound of human activity was like a jackhammer on the streets to him: he could not get even. minute of thinking done in such a place.
Clicking his tongue, the youth had made his way through the park broodily, trying to find a more secluded spot in area; surely it couldn't be completely full. It was supposed to be a massive stretch of nature, damn it.
Crack.
The youth blinked at the sound that filled the air, slowly glancing down and lifting his foot to find the neatly cracked piece pawn at his feet.
"What the...?" He muttered lowly before glancing to the side, finding a seat almost directly besides him, a table with a chessboard across from said seat. All the pieces were neatly organized, if one didn't care for the color of said pieces.
And across from the board, table and seat, was another seat, this one occupied by a tiny child. With closed eyes who seemed to be fumbling for something-
Oh.
"Ah shit." cursed the young man underneath his breath as he slowly squatted down, picking up the pieces. "I'm going to guess you were looking for a missing piece." said the youth with a grimace as he set the cracked piece of wood onto its empty spot on the board, looking over the mismatching colors and shrugging.
"It's, uh... not quite good as new." he said awkwardly, reaching for the back of his neck and squeezing it. "Uh... the board is all over the place, you know. You ain't just squeezing your eyes closed cause of this annoying ass sun glare, I take it."
... Smooth. Maybe he could ask him if his mother had died recently next.

He checked the entire table. Under his chair. Under the table. And still, he couldn't find that piece. It made him believe that the piece was either further away from the table - which meant he'd have to spend a lot of time combing over every centimeter of the place to find it - or it was just flat-out missing.
But before he get out his chair to look, a *crack* resounded through the air, startling him. It came from across the table, right where the other chair was. It was like when he stepped on a tree branch, a realization that alerted him to someone else being here. Someone he'd been too preoccupied looking for the piece to notice the footsteps of.
The indistinct muttering confirmed it. Yeah, someone else was across from him, who'd broken something.
Hideo nodded as the teen asked him if he was looking for something. "Yeah, there's a piece missing. It's not on the table, and it's not under our chairs, so I dunno where it could be."
He heard the guy place the piece down on the board, and he immediately knew it wasn't the missing piece. Hearing the sound of ceramic pieces placed down on the chess board thirty-one times didn't make him an expert on the acoustics of chess, but it was enough to notice that the piece he put down wasn't made out of the same stuff.
He slowly reached over and felt the piece; it was pawn made of wood, slightly cracked. A major contrast from the sixteen other pawns on the board.
Which meant that the missing piece - the ceramic knight - was still at large. Still lying on the opposite chair.
And then the question he frequently got, even if the guy was dancing around it a little. Hideo didn't mind; he knew it was uncomfortable to straight-up ask "are you blind?", so people would try to invent some way of getting the answer from him. Or not ask at all.
"Yup. Can't see anything out of 'em, so might as well keep them closed." A slightly-evasive answer, but it'd go along with what he asked, so no harm there.
"But you are kinda wrong. I keep them closed so I don't get the sun in them. I can still feel them, and looking at the sun hurts."
A fractured wooden pawn would have to do. Its material meant it would be easy to differentiate from the other pawns, so they could treat it as a makeshift knight. He'd just have to be careful not to get a splinter if he captured it.
"Can you help me sort out the colors?" An outstretched hand, offering the teen the seat across from him. "They all felt the same to me, so I dunno which are white and which are black. We can even play afterwards, if you want, but you don't have to. I'm pretty sure the seat across from me is still open."
At least even if he refused to play, he wouldn't have a mismatched chess board. Maybe that'd let other people know he wanted to play. It'd be something to pass the time.

Sure. How is Chess played again?Well that was the saddest thing he had heard all morning. Blind but the sun still managed to be a pain in the arse? Talk about getting dealt a shitty hand in life.
For a second, the tall youth stared blankly at the small boy, taking in his offer with pursed lips. What did he know about chess, again? It was a game of dubious origins that had gained popularity in europe at some point. Rules were very easy, but the game as a whole was hard to master.
Or so it was said. Either way, it had never been something he cared much for, or paid much attention to. He could conjure the basic rules from the pit at the back of his mind in which he had shoved said information into, but that was about as much as he could wrestle from his memory.
Nevermind that; did he even want to play?
Not really, but one look at the pitiful sight that was the board the boy had put together and he frankly couldn't say no. Yuma wasn't a particularly nice lad, but even he couldn't give a small blind child a flat out No.
"... Hn. Not like I'm busy." Mumbled the youth as he shifted his body, dropping his duffel bag by his seat before plopping down straight into the seat.
And promptly leaping off it with a yelp, hands slapping onto the table firmly and making most pieces fall to their sides as he lifted his injured ass off the offending piece.
"The fu-" he nearly bit his tongue as his gaze shifted towards the boy, before breathing in deeply. "-heck was that." He finished, considerably less spirited as he reached beneath his ass and plucked its attacker off his seat.
Oh hey, a piece that actually matched the set on the table. 'Lucky'.
"Found your piece." Said the youth none too happily as he slapped it into the table. After a few seconds of looking around, the youth began taking the darker pieces for himself, setting the lighter ones on the boy's side and trusting him to set them himself.
"I'm the black ones." He clarified to the boy, crossing his arms over his chest. "Where's your parents, kid?" A blind child, alone in a park? It wasn't really his business, but that seemed incredibly irresponsible.
So chances were, his parents were nearby, glaring holes on the creepy, massive dude's back while ringing the police.

Hideo smiled when the teen accepted his request. Even if it took some time to decide, and the answer was pretty noncommittal, he was a patient kid.
He walked back to his chair, adjusting it so it'd be in just the right position - not too far from the table that he couldn't reach the board, but not too close that it'd restrict him. The adjustments took a few seconds, but once he was content, he went to sit in his spot-
And nearly stumbled when the other boy yelped, an uneven frown on his face. "Are...you alright?" he slowly asked, regaining his balance.
And then he got his answer - the teen had found the actual missing chess piece. And though he didn't outright say it, Hideo could infer where he found it; he'd already checked the ground around the table and under the chairs, so he couldn't have accidentally stepped on it. He hadn't thought to check the chairs themselves for the piece, because he couldn't think of any reason for someone to leave a piece there, even by accident...
Which meant his negligence lead to a knight playing Kancho with his opponent. Ouch.
"I-I'm sorry!" he stammered out, quickly sweeping his own chair for anything that could lie in wait. "I didn't know someone might leave a piece on a chair."
Thankfully, the other guy didn't sound too upset over it, even if he slammed the piece onto the board. Hideo sat down in his seat (carefully - in case there was something else there that he missed) and scooted up to the board.
So, if he was going to be on the white side, that meant he'd go first. He ruminated on his first move, but before he could put his hand on the first piece, his opponent asked him a question.
"They're probably home right now. My sister brought me here since it was such a nice day, but she said he had something else to do, so I'll just be here 'till she gets back." It wouldn't be the first time, and he was fine with it. She was never gone for more than a few hours anyways, so she didn't leave him here to starve.
"But it's alright. I come here every couple of weeks, so I've been to this park enough times to know where just about everything is. And there's a lot of stuff to help guide blind people here, so it's still pretty hard for me to get lost. I can even go on the bus or train on my own if I need to." Plus, his cane made it pretty obvious his had a vision impairment, so there was never a shortage of people willing to help him out if he asked.
With that said, he made his first move. "Pawn from E2 to E4." Moving the pawn from the front of his king would let his queen and the bishop adjacent to his king.
"Alright, your turn...although if you don't mind, can you tell me where you move your pieces? It'll make it easier for me to know where everything is." It was much easier than, say, needing to feel the entire board every time his opponent made a move.
"So, now that you know why I'm at the park, what did you come here for? If you don't mind me asking."

Sure. How is Chess played again?"I'm fine." Was Yuma's rough response at the child's worry, not quite willing to linger on his little embarrassing accident for any longer than was strictly necessary.
"It's fine!" Hissed the impatient youth in irritation, catching himself a little too late. "Uh... Ugh." He groaned after, palming his face and squeezing at his temples before reaching for one of his pawns.
"Let's just play." He said as his hand hovered over one of the many pieces, pursing his lips. What to play...?
"Your sister sounds like a dumba- Er, very irresponsible person." He said bluntly at the boy's revelation; leaving a blind boy on his own? It hardly mattered if his claims of knowing the lay of the park and being able of finding his way around were true.
All it took was one person with less than good faith (like, say, the average bully) to ruin Hideo's entire day. Or worse.
Grasping a single piece, he planted his own Pawn directly in front of Hideo's own, essentially blocking off its path.
He couldn't help but utter a drawn out, "Uh..." At the child's request, scratching his head and squinting at the board while trying to remember the child's words before.
"Sure, er... Pawn E7 to E5?" he mumbled, squinting at his pawn's position to make sure he wasn't making shit up before nodding to himself, leaning back against his seat.
His face immediately scrunched up into a frown at the child's question. As a matter of fact, he did very much mind... for some reason. It wasn't like it was a rude question; but the young man's temper was always prickled whenever he was questioned, for some reason...
He breathed in deep, reigning in his temper. This kid seemed nice. He would tolerate it.
"I just finished practice at the club. Historical European Martial Arts. I wanted to find a place to think, but the park was packed of annoying, loud people, so I was going home." And then he stepped on a pawn. "Now I'm playing chess. Practice has been getting boring lately, so I suppose this is a nice change of pace."
From the pace he had set for himself for the past 4 years.
"You said you know how to get home on your own by now. Do you get left on your own a lot?"

His opponent's response left Hideo with an uneasy smile. Yes, he was saying he was fine, but the way he said it made him sound pretty unhappy, frustrated even. He must've really been upset about nearly getting a chess piece stuck up his butt
But then again, who wouldn't be? Getting ceramic up there must hurt.
And though he tried to hide the fact he wasn't uncomfortable, he couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at that comment about his sister. "Irresponsible?" he parroted in disbelief. "She...she isn't irresponsible at all! She knows that I'm fine here by myself, and she even asked if I'd be fine on my own!"
After telling him that she had somewhere else to be, but he knew she wouldn't leave him here by himself if she thought he couldn't handle it. He was confident he could handle himself anyways; he wasn't even sure why his parents insisted he needed someone to be with him all the time.
They let him go to and from school on his own, so why not to the park?
Hideo's attention moved back to the game. Black pawn E7 to E5...he didn't need to feel around to know where that piece was. Seemed like his pawn wasn't going to move any further until that was out of the way.
But he had plenty of different options remaining. In fact, he recalled a very particular strategy he could use.
But before that, he learned what his opponent was doing before he came here. "...Europe had martial arts?" was his first reaction. When someone mentioned martial arts, he thought of the really famous stuff like Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and maybe even Boxing. "Never heard of Europe having any kinds of martial arts. I just thought they focused on using weapons and lots of armor when they fought. What's European Martial Arts like?"
Back to the game, Hideo made his move. "Bishop, F1 to C4." Moving his piece so it'd threaten the pawn in front of his opponent's king. Not too much on its own - even if he got that pawn, he wouldn't put him in check. But it was just a setup for his next move: moving his queen from her spot all the way to H5. And if he got that far unobstructed...
"Well, usually there's someone that comes to pick me up from school, especially if I have to stay late. But sometimes, they're too busy with work or some other stuff, and all of my siblings tend to be busy too, so I just take the bus back home. I know what stop I have to get off at, and I know the way back from home at that point. Most kids younger than me can go to and from school on their own anyways. So yeah, there's a decent amount of times where I have to go through Shibuya on my own."
And if that didn't work and he somehow got lost...he was well-aware of the gps chip in his phone, even if his parents pretended it wasn't there.
"Everyone has to learn how to get around on their own, right? And there's plenty of stuff to help guide me along, so why shouldn't I be able to get around on my own?"

Sure. How is Chess played again? Was he scaring the kid? He couldn't tell, what the heck was that constipated looking smile supposed to mean? Had he already managed to get on the kid's bad side? He couldn't even see him, how had he managed to fuck this up so qui-
"What? Don't be stupid, of course they had Martial Arts!" And that was how he had managed. "Using weapons is a Martial arts to begin with! What do you call Kendo?"
"... But either way, they had forms of unarmed fighting as well. Greco-Roman wrestling, Savate, Ringen, Pugilism-" He found himself listing off the ones he had actually practiced; he had yet to touch a sword. Open carry wasn't legal in japan, so learning how to wield a western blade had little use.
He couldn't help but feel as if he had been put on the spot. The need to hiss and tell the child to bug off arouse quickly, and he barely managed to swallow down the acid that came with it. Just a curious kid, no need to get his underwear in a bunch...
"Uh, er... There's more focus on grappling and wrestling in the western martial arts as opposed to striking, like in the majority of the Japanese arts; Pugilism and Savate aside, course. There's also not a whole lot of spiritual stuff like in most eastern arts. Everything is fairly practical and intended for efficiency." He said awkwardly, tugging at the neck of his HEMA suit. He was beginning to notice just how uncomfortably warm the park was in his full body gear.
Weren't they supposed to be playing Chess? Why was he giving a child who would likely never be able to learn martial arts of any kind a run down on HEMA?
Apparently he also needed to explain to him why it was a bad idea to let him run about.
"You really need me to tell you why ya shouldn't wander 'round on you own?" Other than the obvious? What if he ran into bullies, douchebags, delinquents? What then? He certainly wouldn't see them coming, so it wasn't like he could evade them!
"Not everyone is a bucket of sunshine and good will." He informed the kid gruffly, his lip curled. Even little kids could be mean spirited little buggers. They certainly hadn't shied away from beating the crap out of him when he was younger himself.
Granted, he had always been a tad too mouthy and blunt for his own good.
Bah, the hell did he even care? It was just some blind kid he would probably never see again; if he wanted to wander around and get beaten for his lunch money he was free too.
"Whatever, forget I said anything." said the youth in his usual brusque manner, not even looking at the table before grabbing another pawn, this one in front of the rightmost rook, and moving it forward. "A7 to A5."

Hideo was very quickly learning what kind of guy his opponent was: very serious, didn't mince his words, and a bit abrasive. And he also seemed pretty passionate about the things he liked, since he seemed to go pretty in-depth about different kinds of martial arts, even comparing different cultures' martial arts. A bunch of martial arts he hadn't heard of, but he got the gist of what their foci were.
And admittedly, he didn't really have any familiarity with martial arts; he didn't have much interest in actually learning them, and he'd probably need a private tutor to each him. But it was always fun to listen to people go into what they were passionate about.
"Sorry...I didn't mean to say that they don't have martial arts. I just haven't really heard of any kind of European martial arts until you mentioned them. When I think 'martial arts', I think it's just using your body, not some kind of weapon. You must really like learning about them!"
He hoped it would be a good enough apology.
But on top of all that passion, Hideo felt he meant well. It was almost like listening to his siblings lecturing him on how he shouldn't trust everyone and that even if he could be on his own, he still had to be careful. Don't follow strangers around, call for help if they try to force you to do something, call the police if he got a chance - that sort of stuff. He was lucky that he hadn't needed to use any of that yet.
And it left a small smile on his face - even if this guy only just met him, he was looking out for him.
"It's ok, mister. I know that I have to be careful around certain people. I like to give people a chance, but I won't just follow anyone around. I may not be able to get body language or tell if someone looks suspicious, but there's other ways to tell what a person means."
He'd learned to notice the signs from being around his siblings so much. Listening to them right before they got into a fight with each other taught him the signs; the tones of their voices, how much they talked, what they talked about, how they'd get quiet when he got close or try to shoo him away. And it taught him how to learn other people's tells.
Not enough to get an exact idea of what they were going to do, but a decent enough idea to know if he should or shouldn't stick around.
"And I try to only wander around places I've been to before, and with a lot of people, kinda like here. I know that people tend to keep an eye on me when I walk around with this." He lifted up the folded can from his lap, above the table. "There's never a shortage of people paying attention when that's out. So if someone just tried to grab me and run off, people are gonna notice that too."
Thankfully, it was something that hadn't ever happened to him. At least, not that he could recall.
He put the cane back on his lap. "But I don't mind giving people a chance. I mean, here we are: you helped set the board up with me, and now we're playing together." He moved his queen along the board. "Queen, E1 to H4."
Now he just had to hope his bishop and queen would remain unblocked...

Sure. How is Chess played again?Yuma found that remaining annoyed at the child took far more effort than it was worth; it was hard to be incensed at a child that apologized in earnest.
"Don't sweat it." Was the youth's brusque reply, never a graceful one with words.
The kid's assurances didn't do much to dissuade Yuma from the thought that letting a blind child wander on his own was a plain bad idea. Heck, they could have at least gotten him a dog or something.
But whatever, the kid clearly could handle himself somewhat, and it wasn't Yuma's business regardless. If anything happened to him that was on his family.
"I'm not sure you should be using me as an example of your naivety going right." Commented the adolescent flatly, reaching for the left side of the board casually and grasping his free rook.
Yuma was hardly an example of a model citizen; he had run across and ignored people getting mugged. The very few times one or two or six of his peers had risen to the occasion upon him voicing his less than requested opinion had ended very poorly for all of the involved.
"A8 to A6." he informed the boy as he planted the rook right behind his pawn. There wasn't much thought being put in the youth's playing. As far as he was concerned the game was just starting and both he and child were pulling the moves out their ass.
If only he knew.
"So do you always play chess in this park, kid?" He asked the boy, leaning his head on his fist as he looked around. "Must get kind of boring, no?"
A game about thinking didn't seem terribly engaging to the youth! At least the spot they were in was kind of comfortable.
There were enough trees around to provide solace from the sun, a nice breeze blew rather consistently, and while there were still people around, he was beginning to notice they were a tad more silent than the usual fare of park goers.
"Wouldn't it be better to hang out with your school pals?" All kids had friends, right? Even he had a couple back in primary school.
He wasn't too sure why exactly they had stopped being friends. Somewhere along middle school they had just stopped hanging around him.

Hideo breathed a sigh of relief. His opponent seemed to accept his apology. He'd hate to have a first meeting ruined by accidentally insulting something the other person was passionate about.
Though he legitimately didn't understand why the guy was trying to convince him to not trust him. He shook his head when he made yet another attempt. "I don't think you're a bad person. You took the time to sit here and help me set the board up, and now you're playing it with me. Even if you don't think you're a good person, I do."
And then he was asked if this was what he usually did. "Not really. I've only really gotten a chance to play with my siblings - you're the first person I've played against that I wasn't related to. When I'm usually here, I just walk around or just listen to everything around me."
"I didn't even know that there was a chess board here when I sat down. It might be something new here, 'cause I never noticed them here until now. Maybe they switch them out every now and then?" Though the other games he could think of, like go or shogi, would probably been much tougher for him to play. At least chess pieces were distinct, but small blocks with symbols would get confusing easily, and there were too many pieces in go for him to keep track of.
"I do have friends...but it's kinda hard to set things up with them. I'd have to ask permission from my parents and everything, and then we could only." He paused for a moment. "And...I kinda like meeting new people." At least like this, he had some amount of freedom; going to meet his school friends had to be pre-planned and required a lot of supervision.
He picked up his queen. "Queen from H5 to F7." The piece clinked right against the pawn in front of his opponent's bishop, right next to his opponent's king. Capturing his queen would be the only way to protect his king, and the king was the only piece that could possibly capture it.
Except Hideo's bishop over on C4 was defending his queen. If the king captured his queen, the bishop would just take her place.
What was it called again? Scholar's Mate? Farmer's Mate? Fool's Mate? His sister had used so many names for it that he couldn't tell which it was - if it even was one of those.
Either way-
"Checkmate!"
He smiled. All those times of having it done to him, he couldn't help but feel satisfied he pulled it off himself. All with capturing only a single piece.

Post by Sho Tsuginaga on May 28, 2018 23:01:16 GMT
Sho had fallen asleep with a book folded over his face. He was slumped over in a bench with his bag as a pillow and his arm limping over a couple notebooks. With a shake of the head, he was able to groggily sit up, involuntarily beginning to pack his things away as if his body no longer trusted his mind to handle anything. But he knew better. Sho stood up and stretched, entertaining a minuscule yawn and returning his bag to his back, feeling as if he'd never been asleep. In fact, replacing his glasses upon his nose was enough to make him feel right as rain!
He'd been frequenting the park more, walking through to calm his nerves and contemplate. Sometimes he'd jog a bit to fight the thought that he was still frail and exhausted, sometimes he'd just sit down and watch people like he would in any other place. But as he walked now, he hungered for anything other than those.
Something that entertained the senses more than the aroma of the blooming flowers he walked past or gave his fingers something more to do than delight in the plain touch of a book page.
Sho began to hum along, straightening out his sleeves as he prepared to leave for a place less utterly square than this one. The thought produced a small chuckle in him because he happened by the very shape at the same time, along with the two seated others attached to it.
The other side of his lenses gleamed in the sun as he looked towards it, twiddling his itching fingers on top of his hands as they rested behind his back. The game was already played, and yet the pieces were familiar to him, even if only as strings of words that he had once given form in his mind.
Even then, the only true unease about the board was that Sho didn't know how to play the chess player...Maybe it required a certain initiative, something akin to the eagerness he felt right now. So that would be exactly what he'd use!
He stood back from the beaten opponent's chair, clearing his throat.
"Oh, wait, am I interrupting? I didn't even know there was a board for this here, my apologies." Sho's words leaped from his mouth with a springy tone as he stood off to the side. His eyes were still chasing the still pieces, just in case they had a rematch.
