CHAPTER II: THE ZOID GEMS
Episode 3: No dream is futile! The great anything goes race! The windy weather of the beach on the outsides of Whitewater was truly refreshing, Katherine and Jazz walked down a little hill to get a better view of the sea, and relax for a while on the shore. -This is an amazing weather! I love it! -Katherine couldn't hide her excitement, this weather reminded her of her days in Madrid or Buenos Aires, where the summer was breezy and sunny. -It sure is. It's great to be able to relax for a while. -Jazz said smiling, drinking a can of soda they acquired on an old store in the outsides of Whitewater, smiling like a kid. -I think it's also well deserved, after all we've been through. -Jazz added, stretching her arms in the air. -Definitely. I can't believe we already have TWO gems! -Katherine made a slight movement with her arm, to place her backpack in front of her. As she opened it, a bright yellow gem and an aquamarine gem could be seen inside the bag, glowing with their characteristic intensity. -Two Zoid Gems... -Jazz sighed. -It sure hasn't been easy. -But here we are, Jazz. One step closer to finding out the truth. -Katherine smiled at the bunny. Jazz smiled back.
-Come on! Come closer! Sing up for the best experience you may have! -The yelling of two very feminine voices could be heard not too far away. The duo turned to see a couple of mermaid-like digimon, next to a wood stand with a big sign on top, so they got closer.
-'The great Binary Archipelago all out race...' -Katherine mumbled, reading the sign. -That's right my friend... Oh! -A bird digimon with a crown and what seemed to be a bush on it's back, that was right on the middle of the stand raised his short left wing. -A human! -The two mermaid digimon turned to see the duo. -As I was saying, this is an amazing anything-goes race around the Binary Archipelago. -The creature continued. -Test your strength against other competitors to see who's the fastest, strongest digimon in the whole Binary Archipelago! -Anything-goes race...? -Jazz asked placing her index finger in her lower lip. -Yes! In this kind of race you can fight your enemies, use traps and try to slow them however you want! -One of the mermaid digimon, that Jazz identified as Ranamon, replied. -That's right! As long as you're over the sea, and follow the route, you're free to do whatever it takes to win. -The other Ranamon added. -That sounds... -That sounds... -Dangerous! -Katherine stated. -Fun! -Jazz finished. The brunette turned at Jazz. -Why am I not surprised? -The girl asked, rhetorically, placing her hands on her face. Jazz sure wasn't afraid of danger, a sort of behavior she couldn't quite understand. -This is a race held every ten years. -The bird digimon, that Jazz identified as Delumon, handed over a flyer to Katherine. -'Binary Archipelago Race... Our prize this edition is the mystic piece of jewelry found in the depths of an abyss near one of the islands...' -Katherine's eyes widened -Could this be...!? -Jazz turned at the girl. -A Zoid Gem!? -Jazz asked, tilting her head.
The duo was sitting over a rock, just in front of the beach, as the waves just reached the water, and retrieve back to the sea, it was a very pleasant view for the duo to enjoy. -You won't happen to have an evolution that travels through water, would you? -Katherine sighed. -If that prize is actually a Zoid Gem, we need to enter that race somehow... But how? -Jazz let a sigh go, just for a little longer than Katherine. The duo just remained over that rock, watching the waves hit the shore.

Whitewater. How much time since the last time Amelie had been there? Months, probably; maybe years, digitally speaking? In any case, the calming shore and the sight of the vast ocean were relaxing for her. She didn't know why, but the sight of the seemingly endless blue expanse always managed to make her relax, its soft song like a calming hum in her mind.
She really needed it, in all honesty, especially considering... "This place is amazing, Amy-chan! Why didn't we go here earlier? The beach's lovely! I want to go~! Can we go~?"
Yup. Currently, this small excursion to Whitewater was mostly to humor Ooi, who had gotten more and more curious about the Digital World ever since their first journey here, courtesy of Tsukiko. By now, the brunette was a bit exasperated, and wondered if that had been a good call at all, but what she could say. As annoying as she was, she enjoyed spending time with her roomie, despite how weird and/or eccentric she could be.
If it wasn't obvious, the duo was currently wearing beach clothes; dresses just meant to be taken off and reveal the swimsuits underneath in order to have a quick splash if they so decided. Amelie's was just a plain blue summer dress, a pair of sandals and a wide-brimmed hat, while Ooi decided to go with something a little more stylish; a short striped dress under a plain red shirt, and a pretty strange black cap. Least to say, she liked it!
But the wardrobe discussion was something they'd have to leave for later. Right now, their first an only order for the day was just to enjoy what pretty much was one of the Digital World's best beaches. And that's what prompted the situation at hand; out of the blue, Ooi began running towards the beach with the typical "Last to reach there is a rotten egg!"
Amy followed in hot pursuit, but it was of no use. They were almost by the sea and the shorter teenager had a definite lead. And that's when the disaster happened; almost on the verge of winning, she turned her head back. "You're gonna lose, Amy-chan~!"
And that's when she tripped with the edge of a rock where a Lopmon and another teenager were casually sitting, making her trip while doubling over in pain. That was a pretty hard rock. "Owowowow~."
Least to say, the small race was canceled at that moment. The brunette quickly closed the distance, a look of concern on her face. "Um... are you okay? That seemed like a pretty nasty fall."
She was still too busy doubling over in pain.

Katherine took her sandals off and just relaxed, feeling the humid surface of the rock on her feet, and raising both arms in the air, the air shifts on the beach made her feel alive. The girl was only wearing tight blue-jean shorts and the upper part of a pastel pink bikini.
-So... How fast can you swim, Kath? -Jazz asked looking at her from upside down. -You're not riding me on this race! So stop looking at me! -The girl could hear a soft, child-like voice getting closer. -I know it's imperative to find the Zoid Gems, but... -Katherine interrupted herself at the sight of a short, dark haired girl, tripping with the edge of the rock the duo was sitting on. Silence reigned at the scene. As the girlstarted making 'ouch' sounds, Jazz burst in laughter.
-BWHAHAHAHAHAHA -The bunny grabbed her stomach and rolled on the rock laughing loudly. Katherine got off the rock to check on the girl. -Oh, my! Are you okay? -The brunette crouched, taking a better look at the girl, she seemed a bit younger than her, she had dark brown hair and pale white skin. -Where does it hurt? -Katherine asked, a little out of focus, due to Jazz laughter still being heard on the background. She turned as another girl reached the scene, she had beautiful blue eyes and long, brown hair.
-Oh... Hi. I'm sorry... your friend seems to have tripped over the rock we were sitting on. -The girl didn't even know if it made any sense for her to apologize, but doing so didn't seem undue. She tried to help the girl on the ground to stand up, as she introduced herself. Jazz was still laughing.
-My name is Katherine, Katherine Jasso. It's very nice to meet you two. -Holding a kind smile on her face she bowed the upper part of her body a little, as a sign of respect in her introduction. -It's good to find a human around here, and two, even better! -She added, as Jazz fell off the rock and kept rolling on the sand laughing. -This is my digimon partner, Jazz -The brunette said, smiling at the girls, with her eyes almost closed in a very kind expression, and ducking to reach Jazz, who hadn't stop laughing for a second. -Who I ask you to please forgive for being an... -The girl expression changed for a second as she finished the sentence, to a rather very angry one. -INSENSITIVE BASTARD. -The girl grabbed the Lopmon for her middle horn, and tossed her on the air with all her might. -I'm sorryyyyy~~ -Jazz words could be heard, lowering in intensity as she flew through the air, landing on the sand, not as far as Katherine would like, but as far as the bunny could get. Katherine's expression immediately went back to a kind smile. -So... -She was still panting a little for the effort of throwing the bunny flying across the beach. But acted as if that burst of anger due to her partner poor manners never happened -This is a pretty nice beach, isn't...? -The girl was interrupted by the sound of another voice coming closer to the three humans on the beach.
-Race! Race! Race! Race! -A digimon who literally looked like a giant candle with eyes and mouth, was hoping on his base, leading toward them, repeating 'race' every time he hoped. He stopped after passing the three girls that were just standing next to the rock, looking at him, and turned at them. -So! I think I won, huh!? Yiayiayiayia! -The candle seemed to have been competing with the two girls that had just arrived. He had a very particular laugh, sounding 'Yia' instead of 'Ha' or 'Ja'. The digimon turned back at the sea, as something had rise his attention. -Was them competing? Cause in that case I think I reached second! Yiaaayiayiayiayia! -The candle digimon asked, pointing at Jazz, who was clearly ahead of him, due to being tossed by Katherine.

Heyyyy, there was a girl in pain over here! It wasn't a laughing matter, even though within her, Ooi had to admit that at least she'd have a chuckle at somebody going through the same thing than her at the moment; just not full, blown-off laughter.
Luckily for her, at least there was on considerate being among the ones currently witnessing her fall, and for that, the teenager was thankful. "I really can~'t say I'm fine, but thanks for asking." The raven-haired girl made a pause to let air inside her lungs, almost hoping that'd calm the flaring pain; it didn't. "I think my big toe is swelling at the moment. It huurrts!"
Eventually, the flaring pain began to wear off, giving way to a duller, more manageable discomfort. Ooi finally took at sitting position in the sand next to the rock, half-formed tears stinging at the corner of her eyes while she tried to get the sand off her cap. It was... probably unusable for the rest of their trip to the beach; such a shame.
Amy's appearance happened in that window of time, alongside with Katherine's own introduction. The taller girl was the first one to respond, a slight smile tugging at the corner of her lips. "Pleased to meet you, Katherine! My name's Amelie and-"
"I usually go by Ooi." The other girl promptly added, finally standing up, a bigger smile on her face, despite the pain. "Pleased to meet you two, even though your digim-"
Yup. Insensitive bastard was pretty accurate, but none of the two were adept at throwing curse words on their speech if they could help it. So, instead, the shortest girl of the three present just nodded. "No offense taken. It's fine! Take you two are also enjoying the beach, aren't y-?"
The conversation would've gone normally, but being interrupted seemed like the order of the day; a Candlemon, racing past them began to... celebrate a victory, apparently? Both Ooi and Amelie stared dumbfounded; first at the digimon, then at each other.
Oh well, no point on denying the little guy his victory. "I don't know why, but I think this will be an eventful day." The brunette remarked, her tone flat. "Hope we didn't interrupt anything important; you two seemed like you were moping or something... you know, before Ooi tripped and stuff."
Unneeded comment! But it wasn't like Ooi was going to interrupt the 'normal' bits of conversation they could get, considering all the weirdness currently happening.

Jazz approached the scene, walking slowly and stroking the back of her head with a rather uncomfortable expression, as the three girls tried to have a regular conversation.
-So you basically have a digimon for everything here, huh? -Katherine rhetorically asked Jazz, upon her arrival, looking at the candle digimon now hoping in circles and saying 'Se-cond' on every hop. -That one is a candle... with a face. -She added, still a little confused about his attitude, even more than his appearance, and that was saying a lot.
-There's a pretty wide variety of digimon-Jazz replied, looking at the joyful creature -I would dare to say I don't know most of th- -The Lopmon interrupted herself, realizing what just had happened. -WHY THE HELL DID YOU THROW ME LIKE THAT, KATH!? -She yelled at her tamer angrily. -It's your fault for not behaving yourself! You need to learn some manners. -The brunette raised both hands at around should height, her palms looking at the sky, in a confident manner. -You... -Jazz noticed the other two humans, watching at them argue. -Oh, I'm sorry! -She turned at them, scratching her head. -My name is Jazz. -Katherine waited a couple of seconds, then broke the silence. -And...? -She waited for the digimon to speak.
-...And I tend to laugh at unsustainable... -Unsuitable -Katherine corrected. -Unsuitable moments. I'm sorry. -Jazz had definitely improved her manners after four weeks with Katherine. When she found her, over at Rustport, she didn't even know how to apologize. Sure she had not learnt to say unsuitable or had completely controlled her terrible manners, but she was improving. The whole situation at Whitewater with Miyu and Bloom, where they got the second Zoid Gem, definitely helped her improve her talking skills with digimon and humans, Katherine couldn't say she was proud yet, but she could definitely see some sort of improvement.
-Oh! Yes. It's very nice to meet you too, Ooi, Amelie. -The girl smiled back at the pair. Ooi had taken her cap off and now her dark hair was completely visible. -Moping? Oh! That's right... Did you hear about this? -Katherine handed the flyer that Ranamon gave to her to Amelie, where some info about the great Archipelago race could be read. -We want to take part on this race, but we need a water digimon for that. -Jazz explained, still taking sand out of her ears. -Oh! That's right! Yiayiayiayiayia! -The Candlemon hoped to the group, laughing. -I've come here to sign up for the race! -Oh! You have? So tell me, who of these girls is your tamer? -Katherine crouched at the digimon's height, smiling. She had seen two digimon for one tamer, but she had never seen two tamers for one digimon. -Uh? Tamer? -The digimon seemed confused at Katherine's question -My name is Liquid! and I'm going to be this year's Binary Archipelago All Out Race Winner! -He stated, seeming very excited about it. Liquid started hoping to the center of the beach, heading to the stand where Delumon was taking the sign ups. -Umm... Your digimon is definitely full of energy, Amelie. -Katherine remarked with a smile. -Or is it yours, Ooi? -The girl turned at the recently fallen girl, who seemed to be much better already. -We should follow him anyways, right? -Katherine started walking behind the Candlemon, Jazz following. They both waiting for the girls they just met to follow too, after all, it was their digimon, right?
-Isn't 'Liquid' as a name for a fire digimon a little...? -Jazz started, as they walked behind the Candlemon. -Shut it. -Katherine interrupted the bunny.

Least to say, the pair of girls had stumbled into a pretty... interesting ensemble. The Lopmon, Katherine and the Candlemon were definitely interesting beings, yet, that begged for a question; what was the Candlemon doing in here? He didn't seem to be associated with anyone present at the moment. That was something they'd have to ask later.
"I guess I'm no one to butt into your conversation, but..." Amelie interjected. "Is randomly throwing somebody a good way to teach them manners? I'm not so sure. In any case..."
Before Amy could finish her sentence, Ooi was already trying to scoop up the small, bunny-like creature in order to give her a tight squeeze. "Don't worry. I forgive you, little guy!" Having a weakness for cute stuff definitely showed at the moment, even if this time it was maybe justified? The brunette wasn't sure. She even wasn't sure about what 'laughing at the unsuitable' bit meant, but she wasn't going to question that right now.
Instead, the two teenagers took a keen interest in the flyer that had been handed to them. A great race in the Archipelago? That sounded interesting, even if...
"You want to participate? Hmmm." Was the obvious question that followed. "Any reason in particular? No offense intended, but neither of you seem to be big fans of water races."
Helping what pretty much were complete strangers was not something that the brunette was overly fond of, but if they had a good reason, there was probably a chance she'd accept. At least as a direct participant, even though that even then, their chances probably weren't great.
However, the Candlemon seemed to have other plans. Like signing in the race on his own, and making a run for it, actually. "I... gotta admit that Liquid is a weird name for a living candle." Ooi remarked. "Unless it's... benzine, I guess? In any case, that's neither hers nor mine digimon. Neither of us has partners."
That hadn't changed the main plan, however. Right behind Katherine and Jazz, both Amelie and Ooi began to walk behind Liquid's trails. The likely case was that the Candlemon was hiding something; why would a fire-based digimon want to be near any kind of body of water? It sounded both fishy and interesting in its own way.
And that piqued both teenager's curiosity. They were here already, weren't they? And this event seemed pretty important.

The sun was as bright as it could get. Liquid, the Candlemon, hoped to the stand where Delumon and the two Ranamon kept calling everyone to sign up for the race. Some water digimon had started arriving and could be seen around the stand. Katherine couldn't really identify any of them from afar, but then again, probably neither from up close. The girls they just met had started following, and the conversation started to finally flow somehow. Katherine was happy to hear that the whole fall scheme was off the table now, Ooi had forgiven Jazz (Thanks to, partially, her cute looks, apparently) and it was all good now.
She then turned at Amelie, to answer to her question. -We do like adventures, but yes, there is a reason we're particularly interested on this one. -The girl slowed her pace down to match Amelie -Here -The girl pointed at the bottom part of the flyer, where it could be read the info about an ancient piece of jewelry being offered as a prize. -We think that might be a Zoid Gem: a piece of jewelry that belongs to an ancient set of 5 gems we need to gather to discover more about the odd circumstances that brought me to this world -She explained, trying to keep it as short as possible. -I can explain that a little bit better for you later. -Katherine didn't want to bore Amelie with a long story right now, after all, they've had just met.
Katherine then turned at Ooi, being very surprised this Candlemon wasn't any of these girl's partner. -Uh? So he's not the digimon partner of any of you? -Apparently the Candle was just intrigued by the race the girls seemed to be having when Ooi tripped, and wanted to take part of it. The brunette started looking around, specially around the feet of both girls. -So... you don't have a digimon partner? I've never met any human that had no partner on this world! -The girl was genuinely surprised -Are you looking for your partner? It sure took me a while to find mine! -Katherine giggled, then remained silent. She didn't want to harass these girls about this topic either.
-So, Liquid, you're planning on competing on this race? -Jazz fastened up her pace to reach Candlemon. -My name is Jazz, by the way. -That's right. I'm going to win the big Archipelago all out race, Yiiiaaayiayiayiayia!. -He stated, laughing. He seemed oddly confident. It's very nice to meet you, Jazz-sis. -He then turned at the girls walking behind him. -It's very nice to meet you too, cheater-sis and third-place-sis and last-place-sis.
-C...Cheater? -Katherine could only assume Candlemon meant her with 'Cheater-sis', since she was the one who threw Jazz, for her to win that imaginary race he was having. Of course, third-place-sis would be Ooi, who tripped before reaching the goal, and last-place-sis would be Amelie, who reached last. Liquid was definitely some character. Katherine couldn't help but to giggle at this digimon weird attitude. -My name is Katherine, it's very nice to meet you, Liquid. -She introduced herself, smiling at the child digimon. The group finally reached the stand, where a huge variety of digimon were around, Delumon couldn't even be seen. Liquid and the girls opened their way through the crowd.
-I really want to see how this plays out. -Katherine mumbled to Ooi, as they walked through the crowd of different sea digimon that were trying to sign up for the race. Octopus, shells, fishes, you name it, every kind of digimon that resembled anything from the sea was there. How was this Candlemon planning to compete on a sea race against these digimon?
-Heya! Delumon! I'm here to sign up for the race. -Liquid waved to Delumon, as he hoped closer to the stand.
-Waahahahaha! Don't tell me you're going to sign up on this race, Liquid.-A digimon that, for Katherine, looked like a pink slime inside a trashcan hoped from the crowd, speaking to Liquid. -Oh, but if it's Goofymon. -Liquid said with a rather plain expression. -G...!? My name is Gerbemon, you idiot! -The digimon seemed kind of upset for Liquid forgetting his name. -But most people call me Snake. I'm the leader of TOXIC Team! The next winners of the Great Binary Archipelago All out Race! -Two digimon, definitely bigger than him, raised from the crowd. They also looked like a piece of slime, but coming out of a shell.
Katherine could hear some of the digimon from the crowd mumbling. "That's TOXIC team!" "Yes! They won the Archipelago Race ten years ago, the last time it was held!" "They're pretty awesome!"-Yes, form please. -Liquid was talking to Delumon, asking for a sign up form, completely ignoring Snake and his team. -ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING!? -Again, Snake seemed pretty upset for not being able to scare Liquid with his comments. -I wish everyone could handle bullying like this kid does. -Katherine mumbled to the girls she had just met. -He's not even paying attention. -Don't you get it, Liquid!? -Snake yelled out. -You can't compete in this race! Trying to win this without being a water digimon is stupid! Pursuing that dream is futile!
-NO DREAM IS FUTILE -A voice was heard from beneath the crowd. A long, serpent-like digimon raised from it. -If the kid thinks he got what it takes to win, hell, I'll be damned if he can't try! -Silence reigned across the multitude of digimon reunited around the stand. The sea-serpent digimon floated over to the stand, and filled a form using it's tail to hold the pen. Noise started again, as the crowd started mumbling. -"Who is that?" -"That's Megaseadramon, he's one of the strongest digimon across the Archipelago!" -"I can't believe he's competing again this year! They must be unbeatable!" -You're Nanimon's disciple, right? -He asked, looking at Liquid with a smirk. -How is that old bag doing? -You know the old man!? Yiayiayiayia! -Liquid eyes seemed to light up -He's doing pretty good! -The candle replied, with a smile. -I'm glad to hear. -The serpent remarked. A soft smile formed upon his face. -I'll see you at the race, kid. But I'll let you know that I plan on winning!-Yiaaaayiayiayiayia! We'll see about that. -Liquid replied, as MegaSeadramon took off. -So, Delumon! -Liquid turned at the bird taking the sign ups. -Give me my form already!
-Liquid, I'm okay with letting you compete without being a water digimon but... -Delumon objected -You need a team of at least three members to compete.
-Waaaahahahaha! -Snake burst up laughing -Stupid Liquid! He doesn't even have a team! Waaaahahahahaha! -The talking trashcan continued to laugh.
Unavoidably, Liquid blushed. He was being laugh at, and Katherine could see his frustration. The crowd started to mumble again, making more noise. Liquid remained silent for a couple of seconds, looking around on what to do, then he finally interrupted the Gerbemon's laugh.
-OF COURSE I'VE GOT A TEAM! -He yelled, looking at Snake. Everyone stopped mumbling, silence reigned across the beach once again. -Huh? -Snake raised an eyebrow.
-Jazz-sis, Cheater-Sis, Third-Place-Sis and Last-Place-sis are on my team! And we're going to beat you!
-EEEEEHHHHH!? -Katherine and Jazz squealed at the same time. The crowd stared dumbfounded. -H-He doesn't even remember our names... -Katherine mumbled, still shocked from the candle's words.
-Is... is that true? Are you on Liquid's team? -Delumon asked to Jazz and the three girls.

Despite the relatively rocky beginnings this small meeting had, everything was going more or less well! Katherine's tale was as interesting as it got; Amelie couldn't deny that her curiosity had been piqued. "Zoid Gems, huh? That sounds like a really interesting tale. Maybe you could share it with us down the line? It's definitely... strange, even by Digital World standards."
Overall, it was probably a very complex tale that the brunette wouldn't mind listening to —at least if Katherine wanted to share it— but that probably hadn't much to do with the situation at hand; the race. Which, apparently, everyone was participating in now.
In a show of redundancy and befuddlement, both Ooi and Amelie were surprised and confused about Liquid's apparent status as any of her partners. But, rather than remark on that, the shorter teenager just nodded. "I mean, Amy-chan has told me that she can evolve and doesn't need a partner. Ain't that cool!?" Nevermind the fact that she hadn't seen that actually happening, like ever. "And I kinda just stumbled in this world by chance. So... I'm not sure if I'll ever get a partner or not? I'm happy enough doing stuff with my bestie! Whether I eventually get one or not, that's fine by me."
That was pretty good at summarizing her mentality about the whole deal; sure, a partner would be nice (or not, depending on what she got), but she wouldn't die if she didn't get one. The Digital World was enough fun already.
Of course, this wouldn't stop the group from finding colorful characters, like Liquid himself. Interesting to know how he had the gall to give them nicknames already and calling them -sis. Buuuut, he didn't seem to be a harmful digimon; just quirky. Ooi smiled at the Candlemon, greeting him back. "I usually go by Ooi. Pleased to meet you too!"
"And I'm Amelie. Pleased to meet you." Both teenagers couldn't help to snicker a bit at how Katherine had gotten the rough end of the deal given her nickname was 'cheater', but that had been majorly... or at least that's what they guessed.
"What do you mean?" Ooi replied to her newest acquaintance's statement. There wasn't much to this whole event, right? Just a race...
Yet, how it was way more serious than that became apparent soon enough; the appearances of various rivals, each with their own attitudes and motivations, was enough to cement this race as something that attracted the attention to quite the crowd; from honorable rivals to just... bullies. The conclusion was pretty... anticlimactic, too. Liquid couldn't enter on the grounds of him not being in a team, and had resorted to name... them as it. Not unsurprising, considering their circumstances. Yet...
Ooi was the first to step ahead and nod at the Delumon. "Yup, we're small candle's team. And you can bet we'll get that trophy! Right, girls?"
There was no doubt on her voice, and that made Amelie just... nod right afterward. "Yup. So, can you give him the form already? We wanna get back to work."
Convincing enough, maybe?

Katherine and Jazz stared dumbfounded as the girls took a step forward with such determination. It didn't took the pair more than a couple of seconds to be completely in with the candle's little scheme. Well, there wasn't much to do now, the crowd was looking at them expectantly already, and Liquid needed them. Katherine took a step forward along with Jazz, thinking 'here goes nothing'. -O-Of course! -She said, trying to look as confident as possible. -We're a five member's team. -We've got some work to do, Delumon, so please hurry up on that form. -As Katherine had experienced before, Jazz was pretty good at lying and deceiving, even though, this time, she was only repeating Amelie's words. Delumon frowned at the whole scene, he probably remembered the girl and bunny duo from earlier, and they didn't seem to have a team, but then again, he couldn't deny a form to a participant that seemed to have a whole team in order, so he had to yield, handing the form to Liquid. -Thank you. -Liquid said, holding the piece of paper, placing it on the wooden table that formed the stand and writing the names up. -That's... Liquid... -Katherine could hear him mumble as he wrote their names on the form. -Cheater-sis...-Give me that! -Katherine approached the stand, taking the pen out of Liquid's hand. She wrote the name of all the members, no last-names. -YIiiiayiayiayiayiayia! -Liquid began laughing, again. -I'm sorry, cheater-sis! -The crowd started mumbling, someone being named 'cheater' as a member of a team for a race probably wasn't the best first impression. Katherine was too busy reading the form, though, that had a 'Name of the team' field. -Ummm, Liquid... do we have a name for the team? -Katherine asked to the candle, trying to look like the team had not just formed a couple of minutes ago. -Uh? -Liquid stopped laughing on the spot. -Sure, sis! It's going to be Beer Flag Team! -Katherine tilted her head, it was the first time Liquid seemed certain about anything in the whole 30 minutes they have knew him. Was that some random name he just came up with, or was that planned? Either way, Katherine wrote the team's name on the form and handed it to Delumon, who was staring at her with a cold, skeptical look. -Huh? what's wrong? -The brunette asked. -Cheating is... not allowed. -Delumon remarked. -MY NAME IS NOT CHEATER-SIS, IS KATHERINE, SEE? IT'S ON THE FORM! -The girl put the form right in front of Delumon's eyes with an angry expression on her face. Jazz burst up laughing.-HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!!! CHEATING IS NOT ALLOWED. -The bunny began rolling on the floor, laughing loudly.
After the definitely jocular scene, and finally giving the form to Delumon, the group began walking out from the crowd. A team of 3 big, intimidating, sea digimon, caught their attention. They passed by them, a cold, evil look on their eyes. They definitely seemed very strong, and it seemed like they were walking to the stand to sign up. Katherine and Jazz couldn't help but show a little fear at their appearance, they looked even more intimidating than Snake's team. The group finally left the crowd behind and were back at the beach.-So, Liquid... - Katherine addressed the young candle digimon. -I'm guessing you have a boat, or something to compete, right? -Huh? -He turned at the brunette. -No, of course not! Yiayiayiayiayiayia! -He said, laughing, as always. Katherine couldn't believe this, they have gone into the team of the most unprepared, laid back digimon there was. -But... -Liquid's expression changed to a much more confident one. -I know of someone who's going to help us. Liquid began hoping by the shore, towards the end of the beach. The recently formed Beer Flag Team, had no choice but to follow. -I'm sorry, Amelie. But I thought I heard Ooi say that you can... evolve without a partner? -Even asking the question was weird for Katherine. She had only met humans partnered with a digimon, maybe two, like Talia and Yume. But she had definitely never seen a human with no partner, even less, that could evolve themselves -Like... what? -The girl had trouble even conceiving the question she had just made. -I must say, though, I'm happy you two are here. -The brunette said, addressing the pair with a smile. -I don't know what we would do being on Liquid's team all by ourselves. -The Candlemon definitely seemed like a though element to manage, so they were probably going to need the energy Ooi seemed to have and the calm, mature insight Amelie seemed to add to the team. This was of course, only assumptions of their personalities made by Katherine, based on the little time she had known them, so of course, those could be very much wrong.
-Why did you decide to take part on this, anyway? -Jazz asked. -I'm glad you did, of course, but... -The bunny added -You didn't have to, and you stood up for the little guy. -Those were the kind of people Jazz tended to like. The crew started seeing, by the end of the beach and next to the sea, a huge wooden warehouse, it was a massive building that even seemed to have a dock attached to it. -That's the old man's warehouse! Yiaaaayiayiayiayia. -Liquid turned at the girls, pointing to the structure, with a smile. He then started hopping faster towards the place. -Hey! Old man! -The candle began yelling upon arriving. Who was this 'Old man'? -Hey! Oooooold man! -He placed both hands around his mouth, on a circular shape, yelling to a higher tone. The crew just stood there, waiting for something to happen. What would happen, though, none of them was prepared to.
Jazz started to feel a very hot feeling around her whole body, upon turning to her left, she realized there was a certain area on the sand that had become of a bright, red color. It then began moving, like boiling up. 'What the hell is going on?' seemed to be a recurring feeling that day. Without they could even react properly to the odd happening, a red ball, that seemed to be lighten on fire, went out of the sand, up into the sky, It then fell into the front roof of the warehouse, and began to extinguish. A round, very odd figure could be seen. It had a goatee, wore red glove and boots, as well as sunglasses. This was definitely one of the oddest digimon Katherine had ever seen. Next to him, on the top of the warehouse there was black flag tied to a pole. It had the figure of a beer designed into it. -Oh, if it's my disciple, Liquid! And he has new friends! -The recently discovered creature yelled from the rooftop, making a weird pose. -Welcome to my warehouse, kids. -He stated, changing into another weird pose. -I am the great Nanimon and it's a pleasure to... -Upon trying to make another weird pose, the digimon lost his footing and fell from the roof, the girls just watched him fall, following his drop with their heads. It was a pretty big fall, at least 50 ft. The oddly shaped digimon ended up with almost his whole body stuck on the sand, unable to get out. He was trying to set himself free, though, so he seemed to be fine.-Yiiiiiiiiayiayiayiayiayiayia! -Liquid began laughing, carelessly. -You're so funny, old man! -It didn't seem like the 'old man' was trying to be funny, though. The 'What the hell is going on?' sensation was back.

It was a good thing that both Katherine and Jazz were up to snuff regarding this situation; besides, since they kinda wanted to participate in this race, it was only expected for them wanting to tag along, right? Killing two birds with a single stone right there.
Luckily, the Delumon yielded to their demands and handed the form promptly; another step in the right direction, even if... Liquid's own way of writing their names prompted both teenagers to fail at containing a fit of snickering.
"Don't be that hard on Liquid over there, Cheater-sis. He's just trying his best." Those words had been somewhat muffled by an almost constant stream of giggles, but that was more or less expected by now. What the others thought about that nickname was something neither Ooi nor Amelie cared a lot about, given that... it was pretty much impossible to be taken seriously.
In fact. Was anyone really... taking Liquid seriously? That was a question that the brunette found herself asking in the confines of her mind? It was a bit pitiful, but the truth was the taking the Candlemon's words at heart was a difficult proposition... to say the least.
The Delumon, however, seemed to be dead serious about Katherine's status as a cheater, something that morphed the previous fits of giggles into full-blown laughter. By this point, Ooi was just doing her best to keep her breathing steady.
"You know." Amelie tried to keep her tone as flat as she could as she faced the Delumon, her mouth being a thin line. "It wouldn't be called cheating if it were allowed." Captain(ness?) obvious over there, but... apparently that piece of info hadn't gotten to the bird. "Besides, do you think that anyone would promote one of their own teammates as a cheater? I know that Liquid over here doesn't look like the brightest candle in the chandelier, but still... I doubt anyone would shot themselves in the foot like that."
That was everything regarding their definitely interesting inscription. If the rest of their day was going to be as bizarre as those moments, the group was definitely in for a treat. And, for some reason... the taller teenager really thought that was going to be the case.
As they passed onward, they caught sight of an octopus, a dragon-lobster, and something that seemed to be straight out of a natural sciences museum. Their cold, evil expressions were, in turn, responded by a somewhat classical akanbe from Ooi. She wasn't taking any heat from seafood and extinct animals.
Next, a scene that seemed to fit The Three Stoges rather than a racing team seemed to ensue, both teenagers exchanging looks between them and sweatdropping a bit. They'd sooner find themselves racing on top of Amelie's back rather than getting help from Liquid, weren't they? Well, at least at first, it seemed to be like that; both sighed in relief once he told them that they were getting help from somebody, even though... if the Candlemon had proven something in the half an hour they've known him, it was that he wasn't the most reliable digimon around.
But the alternative was something a certain teenager would rather not resort to, so there was nothing to lose, right? Speaking of which... "I mean... being able to evolve with a partner is as hard as it gets, at least for a human." The tallest human around said, with small a shrug of her shoulders. "But, yeah; Ooi wasn't mistaken. Is there something bad about that?"
There was some surprise in Katherine's tone, and that kinda made her believe that Amy's fellow brunette had no idea about what a Spirit Wielder was. Yet... explaining everything from a scratch would be bothersome; a more specific question would kinda be better than what she just got.
Ooi, on her stead, just nodded at Kath's words. "I mean, it's not like we're going to be of much help. And besides..." She made a small pause, an impish grin pulling at the corner of her lips. "You can always resort to your specialty. Right, Cheater-sis?"
A small, good-natured giggle erupted from the raven-haired girl's mouth. Their peers had a lot of questions today, didn't they? "In all honesty, though. A better question would be... why not? Participating in a race sounds like a blast when contrasted to... a plain day at the beach. Wouldn't you agree? Besides..."
"It seems like you need all the help you can get. Both of you and Liquid; at least if that Zoid Gem is as important as it sounds. Shutting up a group of bullies over that is probably just the cherry on top."
Amy's words brimmed with confidence, almost as if she knew that the trophy was theirs? Why was that? She had no idea, honestly, but that didn't seem to affect her in the slightest.
Eventually, they reached a warehouse and entered in the search of an 'Old Man', whoever that was. Maybe some old and wizened digimon who knew about building ships and operating them. Was this Liquid's ace under his waxy sleeve?
Or just a Nanimon. Well, both seemed to work; after yet another sweatdrop at the being's peculiar way of appearing, both teenagers bowed a bit informally as a way to greet him... even though it was unneeded, probably. Courtesy was essential for a cordial relationship, in any case.
"Sup, Great Baldy." Ooi greeted the half-buried head after his failed act, her words making a stark contrast with her previous posture. "Take you're gonna lend us a boat to participate in the race? Or... something?"
This was just getting more and more interesting with each passing moment.

Having second thoughts about if they would be better off in a team of scary digimon that could perfectly fit into the devil's paella, Jazz could only mumble. -I... don't think it's necessary to bow. -After looking at her teammates bow as a sign of respect to the almost naked man-ball that had just fallen into the sand. Liquid kept laughing loudly.
-Yiayiayiayiayia! Let me help you, old man. -What kind of maneuver was the candle going to use to pull his friend out of the sand? maybe an amazing shown of strength that would prove that...? Katherine's train of thought was interrupted by the sight of Liquid throwing melted wax at the buried 'old man'. -How's that going to help at all!? -A vein sprouted on the girl's head, which seemed to also be a recurring situation for the day. Surprisingly, the Nanimon, after letting go a massive squeal of pain, got his body off the sand and jumped in an amazing manner to the sea to cool off, which, to be fair, wasn't that far away. -How many times had this happened? -Said Jazz, again, mumbling and sweatdropping. It seemed like Liquid was too aware of what to do in this kind of situation.
After the whole scene was over, the group went into the warehouse. -So you're Liquid's master? -Katherine and Jazz looked around the warehouse as they spoke. It was truly massive, it had different types of boats, none of them seemed to be finished or completely good to go. There were also handsaws, hammers and different types of other building and construction materials spread around, as well as different beer cans, tossed randomly on the ground. It wasn't the cleanest place the duo had been at, but it sure seemed like Nanimon spent a lot of time there.
-Eh, Yes. -Nanimon kept drying himself with a towel. -This is my warehouse, as I said before. The kid works with me as my assistant, and I suppose somewhere along the way he began calling me master. -So you build boats, here? -Jazz tilted her head upon making the question. -Oh, no, no. I only repair them. -The shipwright explained, waving his hands. -I haven't built a boat in a decade. -You didn't tell us you knew how to repair boats, Liquid. -The brunette turned at the candle, who seemed to be looking for something, among Nanimon's stuff. -That's because I don't, Cheater-sis. Yiaaayiayiayiayia!! -Liquid laughed carelessly as he kept shaking an old box of tools looking for something. -That's right, Cheater-sis... -Nanimon began, as Katherine spoke on the background in a low, disappointed voice, saying "my name is not Cheater-sis" which Nanimon couldn't actually hear as he kept speaking. -... The kid only gathers materials for me, he usually goes to the jungle just behind this warehouse and gets me some wood and food for the day. I've been trying to teach him a little about shipwrighting but he's yet only an apprentice. -So you're who's building the boat we're using for the great all-out race then? -Jazz asked, expectantly, as Katherine smiled next to her. -Uh...? -Nanimon stared dumbfounded at the crew. Katherine could almost see a great question mark above his head. He definitely seemed to be lost. Silence reigned across the warehouse for some seconds, only the noise that Liquid made from moving Nanimon's stuff could be heard.
-EEEEEEEHHHHHH!?!?!? -For some reason, the digimon was shocked at the bunny's question. -YOU JOINED THE GREAT BINARY ARCHIPELAGO ALL OUT RACE!? -HOW COME YOU DIDN'T KNOW THAT!? -The entire group asked at the same time, then immediately turning at Liquid realizing this was his fault. -HOW COME YOU DIDN'T TELL YOUR MASTER SOMETHING LIKE THAT!?
-Yiiiaaaayiayiayiayia!-Liquid began to laugh loudly. -That's pretty obvious no? -Silence reigned again around the warehouse, as they were all waiting on Liquid's explanation. -I have zero experience at building boats, of course, he wouldn't let me join! Yiayiayiayia! -If a whole warehouse could facepalm, it would have. -We're going to die... We're going to die... We're going to die... -Jazz's words could be heard just behind Katherine, who turned at Nanimon again. -P-Please, Nanimon, you're building a boat for us, right? Y-y-you can't let your disciple go into this race on a boat built by him! -The brunette tried to convince the shipwright to help them, otherwise, let's not talk about winning the race, their chances of surviving on open sea were extremely short. -I'm sorry, Sis, but I don't build boats anymore, Liquid knows that. -Nanimon said, walking to an old fridge, and opening a beer. -B-But! You've got to help u-...!
-KATHERINE!-At first, the girl couldn't believe it was Liquid speaking. So he did know her name. Upon turning at the candle, Katherine found a dead serious expression on his face. She had never seen him this cold and determined before, he wasn't joking. -Even if the old man wanted to build a boat for me, I wouldn't accept it. This is my adventure, and I'm not going to live it through someone else's work. -Liquid seemed to have found whatever he was looking for inside a toolbox, and he started hoping to a back door, located by the end of the warehouse. -You're my friends, and if you're okay with that I'll be pleased to have you on my team. -The candle stopped a couple of steps before the backdoor. -But if you're not, you can walk away, I won't judge you. -The digimon kept hopping to the exit and left the warehouse. Katherine and jazz just stood there, completely lost for words.
-Don't take it personal, girl.-Katherine turned at Nanimon, who was calmly drinking his beer behind her. -This is all about pride for this kid, and he's not going to let you gals down. You just need to trust him. He's the best worker I know. As you can see, I don't have any other apprentices here, and I wouldn't have taken him if I couldn't see that fire in his eyes. -Finishing the beer and tossing the can around, he added. -If you're still willing to join him, he's going to a small jungle we have behind this warehouse, I think he's looking for a set of different fruits, not sure why though. Let's see... -He began looking for a certain something on top of a table, and found it quickly. -Here, this is the list of the fruits he's looking for. I remember he's been mentioning those for a long time. -Nanimon handed the piece of paper to Ooi, who was the closest to him. It was a checklist with 4 elements on it. -After gathering these, you'll probably find him by the end of the jungle, it's not too big, so I doubt you'll get lost.
-At least he's got some guts, huh? -Jazz asked, smirking and looking at the back door. -Let's go... -Those were Katherine's only words, as they went out the door. Other than his magnificent willpower, this fire burning in his eyes, there was no real reason to trust Liquid. But even so, that was more than enough.

Least to say, the shenanigans pulled by Liquid and Nanimon were undoubtedly something that seemed to be out of The Three Stooges. How the Candlemon managed to return his mentor back to the surface prompted both teenagers to sweatdrop and gaze between themselves a bit confusedly.
"Is it too late to regret this?" Ooi whispered into her friend's ear, which prompted a shrug from Amelie. Maybe it was too early to call it quits, but there were definitely some second thoughts being had at the moment. Neither of them were that foolhardy, after all.
Still, that wasn't the heart of the matter; it was that Nanimon was supposedly going to help them build a boat. Except that... he wasn't? Neither Liquid was proficient enough to repair them, nor Nanimon was seemed to be too enthused about helping them.
"We're doomed to fail or something, aren't we?" Another whisper, another shrug as a response. Truth was that everything was getting pretty sentimental at the moment, and while both girls could empathize to a degree... they were a bit too pragmatic to let that kind of sentimentalism to rub them the right way.
Well, probably on Amelie's case, mostly. Ooi was just confused at how much exposition had been thrown in front of her. In any case, neither of them said further words until Liquid left the warehouse, silently watching the whole exchange from their current position.
"I guess that... that was that." The brunette finally concluded. "It's not like Liquid's goals aren't noble and that stuff, but I frankly can't agree with being an idealist to the point of being dumb."
Pretty harsh, right? And not entirely untrue, at least on what regarded her. "Amy-chan..." Did that mean they were going to withdraw their support from the whole endeavor? Just pack and go home? It was kinda saddening, in a sense.
"However..." Yeah, it wasn't going to end there, wasn't it? "We already promised to help him, and backing away from a promise is not something I'm going to do if I can help, so... shall we?"
And so, the duo waved at the Nanimon as they made their way out of the door, right behind Jazz and Katherine. After a small sigh and recomposing herself, the duo eventually caught up with the aforementioned group, gesturing at them to stop for a bit. "Hey. You know that rushing into the forest like Liquid did isn't gonna make us find him more quickly, right? At least if we don't plan on what to do about this beforehand."
Ooi had the list, and the drawings were simple enough that Amelie had no trouble replicating to a decent degree of accuracy it after getting out her own notepad and a pencil. The gears of her mind were already turning, weren't they? Since she had kinda decided to take the wheel, nothing short of being absolutely successful was her aim. And that prompted a smile from her friend; the few times she had seen her like this, it means that things were going to take a turn for the better.
"We should in order to finish more quickly. Ooi should go with Jazz, and I'll go with Katherine; whoever gets Liquid keeps him until we're finished. I think that it's safe to gather at this same place in like... half an hour or so? Or as soon as we finish, whatever happens first."
Having said that, and expecting no objections from anyone involved, the two parties separated. Had splitting up been a good idea? If anything, it'd strengthen the bond between what seemed like unlikely subjects; regarding the split up... it was just what made the most sense.
On one side, no side was left truly defenseless; if Katherine and Ooi had gone alone, and even if the jungle was relatively safe, they were still a couple of humans on a World that had a penchant of surprising you when you least expected it. At least, that way Jazz could protect Ooi to an extent, just like Amelie could protect Kath. And besides, it just seemed that this way, their personalities would clash less; nothing wrong with them switching, but, to some extent... the brunette saw herself not being as patient with Jazz as her friend could be. Heck, Ooi already managed to grate her nerves at times.
And that's why Ooi found herself walking beside Jazz, her expression focused on her environment; for somebody so easygoing, she really seemed to be focusing on the task at hand!
"Say, Jazz." Maybe it was something dumb to ask, but she just was genuinely curious, for the lack of a better word. "How does it feel, being a partnered digimon? Is it any different from being on your own, or..."
They'd probably be walking around for a while, so asking this kinda stuff only seemed natural.

Both Katherine and Jazz turned back to see Amelie and Ooi walking behind them. –You’re right, I’m sorry… -The girl apologized, glancing down in a sad manner. Maybe she was just a little worried about what had just happened with Liquid, but it was nice to see everyone on board, despite everything. Who knew, maybe things could go better once they found the candle. Ooi had the list with the fruits Liquid was looking for, which Amelie replicated good enough for them to split. This, of course, would help them to gather the fruits and find their friend quickly, so it seemed like a good plan. Because of her jealous nature towards Jazz, Katherine couldn’t help to hesitate about splitting up that way. Even though the bunny could sometimes (most of the times) piss her off, the girl loved her digimon partner deeply and like some part of her didn’t want her to relate much to other humans, out of pure jealousy. Knowing she couldn’t (or at least shouldn’t) act like a kid, this was probably for the best, since that way she could learn to not be so clingy with Jazz, she could get to know Amelie a little better and they would all be safe while they completed the job. Some minutes later, the duo had divided completely, and they were both entered on their own depths of the jungle, which didn’t seem so small being inside of it. There were tall palm trees, low grass, and a very hot environment, pretty much like Cipher Jungle, the jungle she had been at some days ago alongside Miyu, where the gang’s war took place on top of the Trailmon. -So, Amy… -The girl promptly interrupted herself, realizing she may have addressed the girl in a too informal way. –N-no! I mean… Uuuhhh… -Even though the girl had improved her talking skills since she got to the Digital World, due to Jazz not being very good dealing with other digimon, she still was the same shy girl when it came to making human friends. –Can I call you Amy? –The girl finally asked, blushing a little. Leaving this embarrassing scene behind, the girl continued. -So you said… you can evolve? Like… into a digimon? –Even though this had clearly been stated before, Katherine found it so incredible she felt dumb just asking the question. She had never thought a process like that could be possible, which made her even more fascinated by it. –Does it hurt? How do you do it? What kind of digimon you become? –The girl’s ‘You’re asking too many questions like a weirdo again’ alarm went on again inside her head but, as always, it was probably too late. –I’m sorry… It’s just that it sounds… amazing. –Not long after saying this, the girl turned her sight back up front, only to squeal at what she saw. -WAAAAAAH!!! –Katherine quickly hid behind Amelie. If there was something the girl wasn’t a fan of, were bugs and insects of all kind. And insect digimon weren’t the exception. A bunch of sand colored digimon, that looked like giant dragonflies where buzzing around a tree. Katherine peeked out of Amelie’s back to see them again, still horrified, and could actually spot something. –That’s one of the fruits! –The girl said pointing at the list that Amelie was holding. –It’s called… Big Berry. –The sketch perfectly matched the fruits that were hanging on the branches of that tree, where the giant bug digimon were around. It was a big, bright red berry, around the size of a melon. How could a branch hold something as heavy as that? -Uuuhhh… how are we going to take that without making those guys mad? –The girl asked, finally coming out of Amelie’s back and asking for suggestions. –I really would like to do this in a pacific manner. –She added, placing her index finger on her lower lip and tilting her head. Probably peaceful was the way to go since she had no digimon partner at the moment but most importantly she was completely terrified of bugs.
Meanwhile, Jazz and Ooi walked through the jungle, looking around in search of another fruit. Jazz kept pointing at fruits, asking to Ooi if that was it since it was the girl who was holding the checklist and Jazz couldn’t see from down there. Jazz turned her attention to Ooi for a moment, as she was asking her about the life of a partnered digimon. -Since I didn’t trust much digimon, I lived by myself for a long time before finding Katherine… -The bunny explained, but quickly corrected herself –Well, no, actually… it was me and Koru, Roru and Boru, three Psychemon that were my best friends. We lived in a town in the middle of the desert. We were actually some sort of bandits –Jazz explained, unavoidable giggling –We weren’t really good, but we sometimes stole some beings from tourists to sell them to the local merchants that come and go around that place, and then buy food for homeless digimon. -Jazz felt nostalgic, even though that had only been a little more than a month ago, she knew her life would never be the same, and even though she was okay with that, she would never forget those moments. -I used to think since I could trust no one, that was my destiny, that’s what I was supposed to do, even though I had the dream of traveling this whole world someday, I used to think I wasn’t allowed to have that dream –The bunny’s eyes were shimmering at these memories from her hometown. Rustport. –But then I met Katherine, who risked her life to save me from Fugamon, an evil digimon, and we became friends. It wasn’t easy for me to leave that town and my three only friends behind but… -Jazz sighed –I guess what I’m trying to say is that since it is very different from being alone, and sometimes I miss those days… -The bunny paused for a second. -It is awesome to travel the world along someone you trust. And even though I still don’t know why I was partnered with Katherine, being on the cruise to find out is great, and I’m finally happy with what I’m doing. -How did you come to this world, anyways, Ooi? –Jazz asked, realizing she was talking too much about herself. –Do you have a digivice? –The bunny raised her glance, thinking. –I remember Katherine mentioning that before finding me, she had the feeling she was supposed to meet with someone, who I suppose was me. Do you have that sort of feeling? –The duo kept chatting and walking through the jungle, looking for one of the listed fruits.

While Katherine's and Jazz's actions had been fueled by emotion rather than logic, they were still something that Amelie understood, even if that was usually how she didn't act when pertaining beings that they had known for... less than an hour or so? Sure, everyone had their sob stories, but still.
In any case, the two brunettes found themselves walking beside each other, even if the taller one hadn't failed to notice the shorter's reluctance about this small plan. Why could that be? Asking right now seemed to be a bit unfitting, so, for now... she'd just let it slide. And that's how they just started walking in relative silence through the dense forest. At least until Kath began to speak, just to seemingly stutter and trip with her own words.
A good-natured giggle erupted from Amy's mouth at the attempt, just for her to try and wave the awkwardness with a gesture of her hand. "It's fine, it's fine. No need to get worked up. Amy's just fine; after all, friends use nicknames with each other, right? It's only natural."
With any luck, that'd be enough to calm her otherwise shy friend, and seemingly do so enough for her to ask a question. Katherine was still interested in Spirit Wielders, wasn't she? Well, the brunette could guess she could give her a quick rundown.
"Lemme explain it really quick." She began, trying to compress all the information in a simple speech. "Not every human is chosen by the Digital World in the same way; some get a digimon, some get two digimon, some get up to fourteen digimon, and some get zero; I'm on the latter train. The flip side of my circumstances is that I gotta search for something called Spirit Totems, that kinda work like the Digimentals most digimon use to armor evolve... with the caveat that they can be used by humans, have consciousness of their own and that they usually hold way more power than the average Digimental."
As if to prove a point, she brought out her digivice and showed it briefly; D-Tectors were usually a good deal bigger and somewhat more complex than Normal D-3, D-Arcs or other digivice models, their distinct shape good enough at telling that their function was somewhat distinct than a tamer digivice.
Of course, that explanation would have to wait a bit, given that Kath seemed to be completely terrified of a swarm of what looked like giant dragonflies. That, incidentally. were also near one of the fruits they needed. Listening to Katherine's words, at least from her place behind her, Amelie didn't know whether to be confused or entertained. "Making them mad? Why would we make them mad? I mean, if they're rational digimon, we're just gonna ask 'em nicely; I think there are enough fruits for everyone to share."
Something which was more or less true, at least for her! Anyone being mad on grounds of a couple fruit being taken when there were plenty of those around deserved to get their butts kicked on grounds of being avaricious.
Mustering a genuine smile, the brunette would wave at the dragonflies, hoping her friend wouldn't get even more afraid of them. "Hey, guys!" If she had gotten her attention, she would proceed. "Do you think we can take a couple of those fruits?"
There went nothing... Meanwhile, Ooi and Jazz's journey had been a lot calmer by comparison. Besides the lengthy explanation that the raven-haired teenager hadn't expected, there wasn't much going for them. "Any reason why you didn't trust other digimon as much? That sounds something a bit weird coming from, well, a digimon." In a sense, it would be like her saying she didn't trust humans, something which... was true to an extent, she guessed. "Koru, Roru and Boru sound like a fun bunch, though. Have you kept contact with them, or...?"
Overall, it was a bit of a bittersweet tale, yet... Ooi couldn't but to feel happy about Jazz. She was definitely doing what she wanted, and that's what mattered at the end of the day. A smile graced the human's face. "I'm glad that you're following your dreams, or at least doing something you enjoy. Life is kinda pointless if you don't have any goals, you know?"
Naturally, the topic would switch towards why she was in here, when she was just an unpartnered human with seemingly nothing to do about this place. Unlike Jazz's own story, hers wasn't flashy or interesting, though. "Well, I kinda became Amy-chan's roomie like... a month ago or so, and we've been inseparable since then!" Of course, not by the brunette's choice, but that's not something that was worth telling at the moment. "So, I eventually got to know somebody who was interested in this Digital World kinda stuff, Amy-chan wanted to help them and they couldn't get rid of m-I mean, I was allowed to tag along! That's how I got here for the first time, and since then I kinda come here to have fun and other things. So... it's not too bad, I guess?"
Naturally, and given her circumstances, Ooi just shook her head, a bit of a frown getting to her face briefly as she tackled the second question. "Honestly, I don't think I was meant to visit this world in the first place, so I doubt I'd ever get a partner; I hadn't felt any pull or something similar in this place, but I think that's fine. As long as I can make friends and have fun, I don't think I'd mind that being the case."
Speaking of friends... one of the fruits that they were supposed to find looked a lot like the ones currently hanging from one of the nearby bushes, at least in the distance; it was yellow and looked slightly oval, hence its name 'the oval fruit'. Why friends, you ask? Well, because right beside that bush was... a Tortomon, currently engaging into what seemed like a really relaxing nap. Ooi's movements froze on their place, her voice becoming a hushed whisper as she crouched to talk to Jazz.
"Um... I guess that we go in sneakily in hopes of not waking the big guy up? He looks like the type to not appreciate being woken up. What do you think?"
This was going to be quite the adventure, for sure!

Even though their walk through the forest had finding the fruits from the list to help a very determined Liquid that had walked off on them earlier as the main objective it was also being very useful for Katherine to get closer to Amelie, which was awesome for a girl who wasn’t very good at making friends, especially human friends. Katherine sighed in relief upon hearing Amy didn’t feel awkward about her calling her a nickname so soon, and then she couldn’t help but giggle reminding the other friend that put her a nickname just some seconds after meeting her: Liquid. Then she frowned, realizing they didn’t know where he was at, and he was probably angry at her. Extremely interested by it, Katherine listened carefully to Amelie’s explanation, knowing that, even further beyond digimon and places, there were still so many things in this world to discover and that excited the girl so much she couldn’t even contain herself. Hearing the description of this ‘Digimental’ Amy mentioned, Katherine tilted her head, since that sounded awfully familiar. –Uh!?. An object digimon used to ‘armor’ evolve... -You mean something like –The girl began browsing between her stuff inside her bag –This? –She asked pulling out the weird shaped egg-like instrument Jazz had used to evolve on Terabyte Mountain and showing it to Amy. –I think Jazz uses this to evolve. Is this a digimental? –Having found Amy was definitely a good thing for the curly haired girl, there was so much she could learn from her, so much she didn’t know about digimon and this world. She couldn’t say the girl knew everything so far, but she definitely knew much more than herself. –How long have you been here, inside the Digital World, Amy? –It was probably enough for her to know all of this sort of stuff. Looking at the girl’s digivice, which looked slightly different from hers, being a little longer, more questions popped on Katherine’s head. –Wait, then how do you call this type of digivice? How do you differentiate it from mine? Do they have different type of names? –The girl asked, pulling out her pink and purple digivice, and showing it to Amy. Spirits users were something completely new for Katherine, and she wanted to know as much about them as she could. The girl’s conversation had been promptly interrupted by the swarm of ugly dragonflies lurking around the fruit the pair needed, which Amelie had decided to approach in the nicest way possible, using logic as her main weapon, of course: if there was enough fruit to share, why wouldn’t they share it with them? For Katherine, of course, logic wasn’t something applicable to bugs and insects, since she just thought of them as awful mean creatures who just wanted to harm her. She had never had any bad experience with any bugs, actually, but she didn’t want to have one either. As Amelie approached them, three of the dragonflies flew towards the girl, lowering their height, while they seemed to be having some kind of argument. -I’m telling you, that stupid puzzle has no solution! You heard it wrong! – One of them said, speaking to one of the other two. - No, no! I’m sure I heard it right, you’re just not thinking correctly. -Gentlemen, please, there’s a girl talking to us. –The third dragonfly interrupted the discussion and turned to Amelie. –I’m sorry miss, but we’re not ‘Guys’ as you call us. We’re a bug subspecies from this vast digital world known as Yanmamon, of course calling us like that would be inappropriate since my actual name is Leo. Meanwhile, the other two kept arguing behind Leo, the recently introduced Yanmamon. -Oh, so you ask what’s the topic of our important discussion today? Very good question miss! –Leo went on, ignoring completely the girl’s request about the fruit. He had a deep, presumptuous, overweening voice. –Today the topic of discussion between these two gentlemen is about a puzzle I just put them through, which, as always, they can’t see to be able to solve. -Agh! I’m telling you! It can’t be solved –One of the arguing Yanmamon approached the girl and Leo. He seemed utterly frustrated by this puzzle like they had been going at it the whole day. -Oh, but it can, my friend, you just need to think properly, as your friend Caesar is trying to do. –Leo replied, turning to his fellow. - Yes, Tyrus. You know Leo always pulls this crap on us, he comes with a stupid puzzle and makes argue about it having no solution and then it has a solution and he makes us feel stupid! – The third Yanmamon, apparently named Caesar, approached the group. –So I’m sure this one can be solved…. Aghhhh! I just can’t seem to get it right –Caesar buzzed, flying in circles, frustrated. -Well, then let the human try it! She apparently wants some fruit huh? –Tyrus suggested –Listen, girl, if you can solve Leo’s puzzle, we will give you all the fruit that you want. -Oh! The passion of a young girl for her fruit! Making her jump into the arms of knowledge and wisdom! So beautiful! –Leo said, buzzing in circles, apparently excited about putting the Amelie through the puzzle. –So listen, miss, here it comes! Listen carefully cause I’m not going to repeat it. –Leo said, with Caesar and Tyrus listening carefully too, since they too wanted to solve it. There’s a Skullsatamon merchant who has a raft that he’s trying to use to go from one island to another one. With him is Grizzmon, his protector, who has a very bad temper. He also has a Labramon, his pet who’s very hungry. The other thing he has is a huge bag full of Big Berries. Grizzmons are natural enemies of other beast digimon, so if he has the chance, he will tear Labramon apart. Labramons love Big Berries, so whenever SkullSatamon is not around he will eat every berry inside the bag! While Grizzmon is not interested in eating such berries. The raft SkullSatamon is using, can only fit him and ONE of the three elements he’s with at the time. That means, it can only carry
SkullSatamon + Grizzmon, SkullSatamon + Labramon or SkullSatamon + The bag of big berries.
SkullSatamon can use the raft to go from one island to another as many times as he wants, and he can take any of these elements on the raft to and from any of the islands, but whenever he leaves the elements alone on any of the shores, they will act as they please, Grizzmon killing Labramon or Labramon eating the bag of big berries, if they're left unguarded. So…
… Describe the raft trips SkullSatamon needs to make to get safely these three elements onto the other island.
The puzzle was set. If Amelie managed to solve this, they would be able to get the fruits. Meanwhile, Katherine was still hiding behind a tree, a little far from there, wondering if Amelie might need some help with the situation.
The other pair was still on the look for their fruits. As their conversation continued, Jazz began to remember everything that had happened with Bulk, a huge story that definitely moved the bunny much more than the one about her hometown, probably because of the negative consequences involved. –I just had very bad experiences with digimon when I was a baby… -She just wanted to leave it at that, for the time being. Not because she didn’t trust Ooi or something, but because she crying in the middle of the woods due to some awful memories wasn’t going to help the pair to find those fruits. To be fair, it was a story she hadn’t even told fully to Katherine to that moment. Good memories were back when the girl asked about the three stooges from Rustport: Koru, Roru and Boru. Jazz giggled again –Well I haven’t seen them since I left home a month ago, but they did promise after they were done with some things there, they were going to travel around the world too, so I’m probably going to see them again at some point. –The bunny’s eyes were shimmering just from this thought. –Boy, I can’t wait!
Listening to Ooi’s story was clearly entertaining, and it made sense, even though Jazz didn’t know what some words like ‘roomie’ meant, she understood the whole idea. From what Katherine had told her, you just needed to know where the portal was to get to the Digital World, so it was not like you needed to have a digivice or having a partner to get into this dimension. The girl didn’t have a feeling she was supposed to have a digivice, meet a partner or anything, so it was probably very safe to say Ooi wasn’t a tamer and probably wasn’t going to get a digimon partner, at least not for now. Then again, the girl seemed to be having fun on this world, as much as Katherine was, so there was no harm to it. When Jazz was about to ask about Ooi’s goals, the sight of a gigantic digimon sleeping next to a bush that seemed to have one of the fruit they were looking for, made the duo stop their steps. Upon looking better at it, it seemed to be a Tortomon, serenely asleep. –Well we don’t have a choice, do we? –Jazz replied to Ooi’s suggestion, whispering. It didn’t seem like they had any other call to make, they needed the fruit and they didn’t want to take chances on discovering if Tortomon was a nice guy just having the afternoon nap, or a very angry not-morning person. Going by herself was not an option. Even though she was definitely smaller than Ooi, which meant she would be less noisy, her arms were too short, and she won't be able to grab the fruits from the bush without having to climb it, which would, of course, make too much noise –Okay, so what if I help you to watch your own step? –Even though she wasn’t the best one, Jazz was a bandit with very decent infiltration skills, so she might know better how to walk or where to step when you don’t want to be noticed. Plus, four eyes were better than two when it came to not step on something that could be noisy or making the wrong move. –I could hop on your head and guide you, so you make the less noise possible. –The bunny suggested.
