"Oh, can you retrieve my weather balloon for me, love?" Kelsey parroted mockingly, her voice sickly sweet as she trundled through the brush. An exasperated gasp escaped her as another branch snagged onto her sleeve. "Right now, I hate plants. I really, really hate plants." A pause. "At least they're not stinging nettles."
She was wearing a skirt, too. A skirt and long sleeves. It was school uniform, after all.
"It's not far from your schoooool," she continued her mocking tirade before the undergrowth finally spat her back out into a clearing. Kelsey held up her phone to her face and considered the scene in front of her. Headstones littered the site.
"A graveyard? Great one, dad. I felt like dying anyway." She kicked a rock as she stepped forward. It was another one of those days where the GPS lead her on a wild goose chase, usually into a place that was supposed to have a normal, perfectly accessible route leading into it. A route that normal people took. A route that she never took.
Kelsey stopped abruptly on the gravel paving, her black school shoes giving a definitive crunch. She was off the grass now. "I don't see a weather balloon here." She huffed. Day: wasted.
Nonetheless, she meandered through the aisles and rows of the dead, eyes on the trees and tops of the stones. Sometimes though, she glanced at the markings carved into the marble. "Sixteen? Poor sod," she muttered half-heartedly, stopping in front of the headstone for a break.

Ryou was supposed to only make a brief walk past the cemetery on the way home, having decided to just go straight home this time instead of passing by the park. Who knew if another digimon would just pop out of nowhere and decide to be his partner. Granted, he knew the chances were low, but he really just wanted to go home at the moment.
Caprimon, or Shou as he decided to call him just for something simpler to say, was being kept hidden from the general public inside his backpack, which he left open so the guy could breathe inside of it and wouldn't be sealed out in complete darkness. Ryou was just walking, listening to music on his headset, as he had given pretty clear instructions for Shou to keep himself quiet until they got home, when all of sudden he noticed a distinct lack of weight on his back.
He took a deep breath and turned around just in time to see Shou heading inside the cemetery. On the bright side, there weren't a lot of people there so the risk of him being seen by random people was significantly smaller. On the other hand, it was a freaking cemetery.
Ryou gave chase and he could swear that Shou had started hopping faster just to make his life that much harder. Further ahead, Ryou saw a girl standing around and, as fate would have it, Shou was wandering right into her path. The Caprimon stopped in plain view of the girl, having noticed that she was there.
"Hi!" Shou called out to her cheerfully.
Not a moment too soon, Ryou ran and scooped Shou from the ground, but he knew that he wouldn't have the time to put him in the backpack without being noticed. So he just turned around, holding the Digimon in his hands, and awkwardly stared at the girl standing by a grave.

As great as staring at dead people all day was, Kelsey still had a weather balloon to catch. Sighing, her arms slumped by her side as she felt compelled to look down. Just in time to see a... thing.... bounce in front of her.
Stripy tail? Check. No legs? Check. Silver hat? Check. It can talk? Oh yeah.
For just a few moments she stood there, mouth opening and closing like a stranded fish. Enough time for another kid her age, but shorter, to scoop up the monstrosity. A small moment passed that consisted entirely of awkward staring.
Kelsey made her move. She raised a finger at the both of them so that it was pointing. "That... That is either a raccoon and the worst case of animal cruelty I have ever seen." She paused. "Or an alien." A laugh of disbelief shook her body; she must have been dreaming.
"Hey, are you mute or something? Your pet's said more than you." Back to the insults, although they were hardly venomous. There was also a crease to her brow that suggested she didn't really believe it was a pet. That she expected an explanation, or something. Her hands went to her hips, setting her into a rather adamant pose.
Then she realised something. She was actually about say it, when halfway through the first syllable, she caught a glimpse of white rag on the headstone behind them. Her eyes glanced between them, back and forth. Weather balloon, alien, weather balloon, alien.
Kelsey could stare at the alien/monster for hours, but the balloon was right there. How'd she miss it earlier? She bit her lips. Would he notice what she was eyeing? Would he say anything? Even a crap excuse was better than nothing.
What she didn't know, was that was not a weather balloon. And it would be very, very angry if woken up.

Ryou just kept staring at the girl even as she began speaking directly to him. He recognized her, she was from his school, which meant that if she decided to speak to other people about Shou, then his school life was going to become even more of a mess. He needed to find a way out of this situation without getting himself in trouble, but of course, this meant actually having to convince her to not spread the word.
"I'm his partner Digimon!" Shou suddenly blurted out, making Ryou's body go tense for a moment.
"S-Shut up!" He whispered to Shou as he looked at him in his hands, looking unusually angry.
Ryou took a deep breath before then looking at the girl once again, he was going to try and explain what was going to the best of his ability, but he noticed that she also seemed to be looking at something other than them. Turning around out of curiosity, he saw some white rag on the headstone behind him.
"Huh? What's this?" He asked as he tried pulling the rag to take a better look at it.
"O-Oh. Wait!" Shou tried to warn him but it was sadly too late at this point

A partner Digi... what? Was that some kind of weird occultist pact? Or worse... a romance? Kelsey raised an eyebrow. Yeah, maybe he was just friends with the alien. Hopefully. She didn't want to think that the kids from her school were that weird.
"Hey kid, that... that is not a weather balloon, not a weather balloon!" Her voice descended into panic as the white rag stirred. Then it rose, rose up to reveal two empty eyes and a nasty, gummy mouth. "A ghost!?" Kelsey gaped as it held out its raggedy limbs, and she stumbled backwards onto the ground.
"Who dareth disturb mine slumber? Has't thee no shame!? Thither wilt be'est a price to payeth for this: thy life!" As the ghost spoke, its voice became more and more dishevelled. "Zombie Claw!"
Its arm shot out, talon-like claws revealing themselves beneath the cloak. But before the lightning-fast attack could even connect with Ryou, a tiny blue wisp of flame smacked into the Bakemon. "Screeee!" It screeched, thrown off kilter. It looked around, unable to discern where the attack had even come from, then prepared to attack again.
"Alright, you know how I said I wanted to die earlier? I was lying, oh God!" Kelsey muttered to herself. Then she shouted, "I'll get help! I-I'll call the police or something!" She scrambled up off the ground. Suddenly, a faint voice echoed, too calm and playful to be the very angry ghost.
"Help is on its way..." It giggled softly, coming from all around her. "But you can't let me do all the work... up, and to your left. Go. I am weak, now." Silence. Only the rustle of the leaves. Kelsey stared up in the direction it had told her. Then she saw it. In the trees.
"The balloon!? How is that supposed to help now!? What am I meant to do, tell it the air pressure!? Kid, did you hear what that voice said?" She asked him. Although maybe it would be right: maybe there would be something there that could help them. Why not trust mysterious voices?

Of all things Ryou was expecting that rug to be when he pulled it, a ghost was among the last of them. He stepped back as the ghost spoke to him in a voice that sounded downright creepy before showing off some talon-like claws and looking ready to tear him apart. Ryou only closed his eyes, expecting the worst that never came. He slowly opened his eyes to see that not only something else had struck the ghost, but Shou had freed himself from him and was looking ready to fight.
"Wh-What happened...?" Ryou asked as he began stepping back.
"Stand back, Ryou! I'll protect you!" Shou explained, standing between Ryou and the ghost.
And before Ryou could say anything else on the matter, Shou was already throwing himself at the ghost with his helmet's horns ready to skewer the thing with them. Somehow, Ryou didn't think that was going to work, given the sheer difference in size between the two of them, but it was already too late to stop Shou.
"Are you crazy?!" Ryou yelled out, trying in vain to reach out to the Caprimon.
The girl that was in the graveyard with them had begun running out to call for help, but all of sudden she began asking him if he could hear any voices. It might have been because he was too focused on the situation at hand, but he didn't think he had heard anything else.
"N-No! Are there more of these ghosts...?" Ryou answered, beginning to look at his surroundings for any hints of other attackers.

The Bakemon went to swat Shou away as if he were a fly. Albeit it wasn't a very hard swat, considering it was a floaty ghost. "Thou art pathetic! Thy life is forfeit!" The ghost raged. Shou's attack had left only another tear on the Bakemon's rags.
"Yes? No? The one I heard wasn't as... Shakespearean," Kelsey replied dryly to Ryou. "You know I hope your little alien friend is a ghost buster because he doesn't look too tough." They were screwed. Unless maybe she took the advice of the other ghost that she still couldn't see. Wasn't that what anime girls in those stupid Japanese cartoons did?
"I'll be back!" She yelled. "Don't die! I'm going to get help!" At that point she'd basically pledged to help the guy. Not that it would be a thankless task. You couldn't question someone who was dead, after all.
The ghost had other plans. "Ghost chop!" Somewhere, it took knives out from under its cloak. And threw them at Ryou.
Kelsey left at a sprint. Towards the tree with the balloon. "I swear to God," she grumbled as she hauled herself up onto the lowest branch. The heave left her slightly winded, but she carried on. "This shit," she carried on, expletives getting worse as she carried on up the tree.
The last branch. Nestled within its forks and leafy shrubbery were deflated rags. Rather like a sad jellyfish that'd been stranded far away from home. The box was wrapped within it. Kelsey ripped off the balloon and quickly undid the box. Inside it, the normal machinery. But there was something else, as well. Some sort of statuette?
She went to grab it, but as she did so, her hand brushed against the machinery. Hissing, she brought it back. A small pinprick of blood fell from her hand.
Something unexpected happened, however. The machinery began glowing. Shrinking, too. Kelsey watched in awe at the magic unfolding in front of her. When the spectacle ended, what was left was a somewhat whimsically designed device.
She went to pick that up first. It was cold in her hands, as if it'd just come out from the fridge. The dark screen lit up, displaying a green LCD background. The statuette in the box began glowing too. Kelsey yelped, gripping the tree with her hand even harder.
Then she looked on in horror at it. Her hand was glowing. "What the hell?" It didn't hurt. It was terrifying, however. She heard giggling. Giggling of that voice. Everything seemed to converge. Her body, the device, the statuette. All into brilliant light. As soon as it'd started, it'd stopped. She was on all fours. With paws.
But she wasn't scared. She could feel the mind of the being she'd become. It knew how to walk, how to run, how to fly. It was a type of monster. It could fight. Although its mind was alongside hers, Kelsey dominated it. "Komatamon, huh? Let's take you for a spin."

Shou was near effortlessly swatted aside by the ghost, although he did manage to tear its rags a little but that seemed to make no difference at all for it. The situation was looking worse by the second, but at least Shou didn't seem to have been too hurt by the strike and bounced back up on the ground.
"Shou, I don't think we can beat this guy..." Ryou gulped, stepping further back
"We can! Trust me!" Shou spoke with conviction and no lack of determination in his voice.
The odds weren't looking good and, as the girl had said, it wasn't looking like Shou would be able to fight the ghost very well. Ryou was surprised that he had done any damage at all, so the idea of victory didn't seem likely. Yet, Shou insisted on fighting and that sheer certainty that they could win somehow made Ryou start wondering if there might actually be some hope in this.
Then suddenly the ghost pulled out a knife and tossed it at Ryou so quickly that he didn't even get a moment to register what was going on, much less dodge it.
"Watch out!"
And without thinking, Shou threw himself in the path of the knife and, just as it was about to hit him. Suddenly his body began glowing in an intense white light that was almost blinding for the brief amount of time it was present, Ryou could barely make an outline of Shou that began changing shape, becoming bigger and suddenly sprouting limbs and then, when the light faded, it revealed an entirely different creature.
The knife still struck Shou who was then knocked into Ryou, who managed to catch him, although he still lost enough of his balance that he fell on the ground in the process. Ryou only looked in bewilderment as the previously furry digimon now looked more like some cartoony knight from some kid's show.
"Are you ok?!" Shou asked, as if the knife hadn't done anything at all to him.
"I... I think that's my line." Ryou responded, still looking stunned.
Shou stood on his tiny legs and once again put himself between Ryou and the ghost, seemingly still intent on fighting. Something Ryou noticed was that Shou was also equipped with swords now, swords that looked very much real and deadly. Well, maybe this was exactly what they needed.
"Alright, I'm gonna believe you on this one." Ryou smiled.
"That's the spirit!" Shou then began dashing towards the ghost before then leaping forward while spinning with his swords, essentially turning himself into a living sawblade "Whirl Blade!"
Ryou had been so distracted by what was happening with Shou that he almost forgot about the girl, he looked around the area to see if she was still around there but all he ended up seeing was... another Digimon.
"H-Huh...? Who are you?" He asked, keeping his guard up in case of this being yet another enemy.
