Experiencing the Digital World, far and wide; that had been what the Rinji and Amelie had promised each other to do. A bit to find the truth about her spirits, another bit as a journey of self-discovery.
That's how they had reached this place; it didn't hold any special significance, but it was interesting enough for the trio to make a small stop in order to check it out. After all, what mattered, in the end, was the trip, right? The destination was just an added bonus.
Now, why trio? The answer was simple; the Scolomon had invited a friend to this small journey; Coolmon, a Cutemon that was half cute, half cool, at least in regards to what Amy thought; they hadn't chatted all that much thus far, the brunette could appreciate why her friend had fallen for her. She definitely was a kind, gentle and determined soul.
The three were ahead what looked like an ancient pyramid, the pathway in front of them being fairly obvious. Yet... one single question lingered in the air.
"So... are you ready?" Her words were muffled a bit by the sandy wind, but they were still perfectly hearable... probably. "I don't know what might be inside, but it does look interesting enough. Who knows what we might find inside."
Once everyone expressed their approval, she'd advance into the main corridor...

Coolmon was pretty enthused about being invited by her best friend on an adventure. Why? Well, you didn't hear this from here but Coolmon had kind of been hoping they'd do something like this in due time. Furthermore, as a fellow traveler of the Digital World and beyond, it was her obligation to render aid upon those who desired it be they friend or stranger. Like Rinji's giant brunette human friend! Who was actually really sweet in Coolmon's eyes.
Then again, there may have been a little bit of bias given she was also Rinji's friend. And Rinji had a good judge of character. Coolmon's scarf had somehow turned into a full on cloak/mask ensemble as they had stood before a large and ancient pyramid. "I mean, I think I'm pretty ready. But pyramids are real dangerous, so we should be at least double ready, right?" Her voice was more muffled. But it was still clear. The Cutemon prioritized safety.
"From what I know, pyramids are also tombs...So...Maybe there'll be skeletons? Mmm...I've never been in one before..."

Everyone was finally here; a human, a rabbit, and of course, a centipede. Said centipede was quite happy to have both of his best friends together with him. Amelie, the human girl who he'd promised to accompany on a trip through the Digital World, and Coolmon, who was (to him) someone rather special.
Rinji stood in front of the structure, between Amelie and Coolmon. His antennae whipped in the wind as he stared up at the pyramid's crumbling walls.
"Skeletons? I hope not," he replied, feeling rather disturbed by the idea. "But I guess if there weren't any skeletons, there'd be mummies." And not the kind that cooks your dinner, either.
He took a hot, dry breath. It was baking in the desert and he was starting to sink into its sands. "You never know, there might be treasure instead. And curses don't really exist, do they?" There was also another really good reason to want to go into the tomb: it would be cool inside.
The Scolomon started to walk forwards towards the entrance, but didn't quite enter it. As he did so, he stared up at the archway of the tomb robber's passage. Then, he looked back towards his friends. "Hey Coolmon, what are you doing with your phone?"

That was a valid concern, even though there was a relatively interesting reality about digimon. "Unless they're human remains or actual... zombie digimons, I doubt we'll find skeletons in there."
Actually... that made her think; what were the chances of actual human remains to be here? Maybe humans went a bit too far into the past? Or maybe that would be due to the interference of ancient digimon? In any case, that was something pretty unlikely, even if not impossible.
As the brunette moved in direction to the entrance, he noticed that Coolmon was up to something, and that actually made her smile. "Come, Rin-Rin. Let's pose a bit!"
Maybe a selfie wasn't something deep or related with their current journey, but it was still building a memory; one that could end well or not, but still a memory that Amy would eventually come to treasure. Once that was done and taken care of, she'd gesture to the main corridor. "Now, let's get in. And, Coolmon... don't forget to share the picture later, okay? I want it!"
Said main corridor didn't have much going for it, except the occasional cobweb and a high amount of unwashed sand flooding the floor. She felt a little embarrassed, but... "Say, did any of you bring a light?"
She could probably produce one from her Infini-store if needed, but rummaging such an ample bag at the moment didn't seem ideal.

"No, no, like...Actual skeleton Digimon. Like SkullGreymon!" Coolmon nodnodded, continuing to fiddle with her phone before realizing that her jig was up. Oh no!
"Well, you see, I'm trying to get the camera to face us so I can take a picture of us. This is like...really cool! Also to celebrate this because it's our first adventure together!" Coolmon spoke, really enthusiastically, right as she actually got the app to work, holding the phone out to capture all three of the individuals present in the picture before...snap!
...Coolmon thought it looked nice, at the very least. It took her mind off of the brief topic of curses...That really...stirred up something that was uncomfy, to say the least. "Mmhmm. I'll send it to you! Uhh...Rinji quick what's Amy-chan's number? I need it for later!"
And as the crew entered the pyramid?
It was dark.
Coolmon was used to the dark, though. She lived in Old Terminus, after all. "Um...Hmmm..." Oh! An idea! She held her hands forward and focused, as though she were about to use her healing move. A bright light formed in her hands and persisted. "Not really but I've been working on this for a while. Maybe Rinji might have one?"

Oh. She was taking a picture! Of course! Rinji quickly scrambled back to join both Amelie and Coolmon in the photo-taking process.
The comment about such a colossal and powerful digimon as SkullGreymon did warrant a pause, however. "Wait, you meant something like that? I... think I'd prefer normal bones now," he replied with a bit of unease. It was nowhere near enough to ruin the mood, though.
With a grin, he let Coolmon take the picture with all three of them. "This one is definitely a keeper. Don't forget to send me it too!" He said cheerily as he peered down at the result on Coolmon's phone. "Oh, Amy's number? It's..." Rinji trailed off as he recited the long and tiresome string of numbers.
So with that done (and he was really looking forward to receiving the copy later), they wandered into the dank depths of the tomb's entrance. The darkness was pretty unsettling though. Especially if there were going to be skeletons in here. Nobody wanted to bump into one of those.
"Woah, it's like a lightbulb, Coolmon!" He commented as he watched in awe at the light between her paws. "Uh, I guess I could try too?"
The centipede let just the smallest amount of electric current run through his carapace. "Um... nobody touch me while I'm doing this," he stated plainly as he realised the danger. Then he let just a few more amperes of electricity course through him and...
Voila! Rinji was glowing red. It wasn't the pure bright light type of illumination that Coolmon had, but it did cast a nice soft red glow onto the stone walls and floor. The colour almost made the scene romantic. "I've never used my electricity quite like this though," he commented. "I think I should be able to keep it up for a few hours before I need to recharge."

Just like she had suggested, the skeletons could be... well, skeletal digimon like SkullGreymon, SkullMammothmon, or even worse. the mere thought made Amelie shiver; while this place was interesting, it wasn't in her immediate plans to exit it while fleeing from a rampaging digimon that happened to be angry for their trespassing.
Still, that didn't deter them from entering, and for the two digimon to volunteer at providing a light with their own means. It was interesting how magic (or electricity) was readily available for the two of them, both the red and white-ish lights intertwining and providing them with enough to follow with relative certainty.
Or, to at least confirm there weren't any spike traps awaiting in the floor. "Thanks." As they advanced into the proper insides of the pyramid; as they did, the walls began to describe colorful pictograms, and even though Amelie wasn't an expert in digimon language, at least the symbols that accompanied them were quite... descriptive.
"Apparently... there used to be an ancient civilization in here." She muttered, gazing at the pictograms that symbolized a large row of buildings. "Wonder what kind of civilization it was. It seems like it used to be very prosperous, and I think I can see..."
The brunette made a small pause, motioning either Rinji or Coolmon to come closer so she could get that picture clearer. "Does that look like... a Dokunemon cultivating a meat field? I Wonder if it was a civilization of insect digimon. Wouldn't that be interesting, Rin-Rin? Maybe there were some Scolomons in here."

First and foremost!
Coolmon had no idea how she managed to get that entire string of numbers. Nor did she really have any way of ensuring if it was accurate or not. It was, at best, something to test out later on when she sent the picture proper. She nodded towards Rinji. A keeper indeed! "I think it's either skeletal dinosaur Digimon or Mummymon...Man, that'd be...Well, I guess it'd be awful but also it'd make a neat story for later." Coolmon stated, finding herself staring at the rather luminous Scolomon. "...That's super cool."
As the walls of the pyramid began to tell a story worth a thousand words via the use of pictures, Coolmon found herself reading and nodding along. "Mmm. People that hail from a time before...well, time! Someone once said that learning lessons from what was left behind is very beneficial towards staying on top of yourself." Coolmon stated, stepping up towards where Amelie paused and holding her light to the picture. "Ooooh..."

Rinji might've blushed at Coolmon's compliment. There again, that'd probably be hard to tell in his current glowy state.
"An ancient civilisation?" He replied, intrigued. And still glowing, which might've taken some of the edge from the mystique. The centipede wandered up towards where Amelie and Coolmon appeared to be enraptured by inscriptions on the wall.
"You think they're supposed to be lessons from the past?" He questioned Coolmon as he saw what they were looking at.
Staring at the dusty wall paintings, illuminated by the pink hue of both his and Coolmon's light, he soon understood what they depicted. It was like a painted recording of what the insect digimon used to do. "It's hard to believe that insect digimon used to survive in a place like this," he commented as he travelled along the wall, observing the pictograms as he went.
"I thought it was bad enough with the sand getting into my spiracles." He stopped. "Um, Amelie, Coolmon? You might want to see this."
On the wall, the paintings suddenly became more elaborate. Almost if they were just slightly newer than the pictures that'd come before. An assortment of Scolomons were depicted: cultivating meat fields like the earlier Kunemon, but also digging massive channels, assembling wooden chariots, even pulling massive stone bricks. And with the lack of hands for the more dexterous jobs, teamwork was depicted more than ever.
Although there was one fundamental difference.
These Scolomon were yellow. Or more correctly, a brown and ochre. Brown on the legs and tips of the faces and antennae, and between ochre and yellow on the carapace.
Maybe it was because they didn't have any red paint, or the dye had faded over time, but Rinji already felt disconnected. They were like him, but not quite. The murals did continue, but he decided to wait for both Amelie and Coolmon to catch up.

This was an amazing discovery; so amazing, in fact, that Amelie would've begun to write if she had been alone. Nevermind that Coolmon and Rinji were their only light sources at the moment! While she wasn't actively 'Oooh-ing' like the Cutemon, she still gazed at the hieroglyphics with her eyes wide in surprise and curiosity.
So much that she almost hadn't heard Rinji's words about checking a new set out; her friend's words didn't disappoint, however. If the Dokunemons were interesting, finding the very beings she had predicted maybe being there was almost a bit too uncanny.
The brunette couldn't but look with immense awe at what had been the remains of an ancient civilization where they had thrived, and even their coloration was unmistakably different, the fact that this has been the closest she had seen to Rinji's peers was... quite the discovery!
"An ancient civilization that included Scolomon as their primary workforce... isn't it amazing?" She couldn't but mutter, her eyes affixed in the wall. Rinji had been oddly silent, so maybe he was still processing the fact? No way for her to know.
Of course, the tale followed; the centipedes' civilization was very advanced for its age, and had seized that to expand in what would have otherwise been an infertile land. Irrigation systems gave life to acres of meat farms, beautiful cities, and marvelous inventions. Truly, a group of brilliant minds had been behind the construction of this great mausoleum and many others of its kind.
Who was inside, though? Such a magnificent construction meant only one thing; this was the final destination of a great figure, either religious or political. After motioning at Rinji to follow her lead Amy kept peering through the hieroglyphics, and finally... found the answer.
A Scolomon —or maybe something bigger? The image was tad blurry— stood on top of many of its subjects, its body at least twice as big as his subjects'. His carapace seemed to be a mosaic of bright, ultramarine blue and gold, and on top of his head, the digimon seemed to wear the digital equivalent of a Nemes Headdress. She couldn't read the inscription below, but the ancient digicode would read 'God-Pharaoh'.
"Whoa." A short gasp exited the brunette's mouth. This was nothing short of... breathtaking. "To think I wondered if there was any of your kind when it seems that your distant relatives seemed to be at the head of this `ñace. Unbelievable, isn't it?."

"I mean...They had to leave those drawings--pictures here for something, right? So...I say we learn from them." Coolmon explained. Simple thinking, right? She followed the group along, wondering if a civilization of insect digimon was like. Interesting questions. Maybe an ant farm...?
The thoughts were interrupted by Rinji finding something of note. A depiction (as well as a confirmation) of Scolomon being among the civilization alongside Dokunemon. Yet these were a different color than the Scolomon to her side...A subspecies, perhaps? "Hm...Maybe they built it to be the resting place of this guy?" She gestured at the God-King.
The ancient digimoji was throwing her off a little, though. So, she needed some time to read it, as well as continue along. "How far does this civilization extends? And...who is the king?"

Throughout this ordeal, the Rinji was indeed quiet. It could've been a combination of awkwardness, surprise or shock... but he was genuinely yet silently processing the information. And importantly, seeing what Amelie and Coolmon had to make of it.
He watched Amelie trace the murals with fascination. A comment of hers brought him out of his thoughts. "Yeah," he replied almost casually albeit with a tone of distant dreaminess, but then continued on a more tender vein. "To be honest... I've never met another Scolomon before. I wonder what they were like?"
"I mean... I didn't even know if there were others of my species until now. So I guess there must've been. But I'm guessing these ones are extinct now." Initially, he'd been hopeful, but it was clear there was dejection in the possibility of meeting his own kind being shot down. In all honesty, despite their differences, it would've been nice to have someone to relate to. A person who was functionally the same as he was, and experienced the same problems as he did.
"I can't remember if I've said before, but I was born in Primary Village and never saw anyone else like me. For all I knew, I could've been the only one." He paused. "Uh, not that I'd mind if that was the case or anything. I'm happy being with you guys."
Approaching the depiction roughly translated and labelled 'God-King' revealed its gorgeous beauty, although he had no clue what the digicode meant.
"It's close to modern digicode but definitely different. I'm sure I've seen it somewhere before," he stated. At the end, he trailed off, as if trying to remember exactly where he'd seen it before. The gesture proved fruitless as he made no further comment.
"It's got to be his resting place," he said in lieu of Coolmon. "They went to the trouble of putting him on the wall..." The depiction was quite interesting. Colours not depicted on the other Scolomon were painted onto this one. "Do you think they did it to be artistic?"
"He's got to be their leader; he's the biggest one in the painting," he replied. Rinji wandered further along the passage, his own light fading out from its intersection with Coolmon's. Although this seemed to be the point where the murals ended? Only blank stone walls occupied this section.
The sounds of clicking feet stopped. "Huh?" Rinji muttered something.
On the wall in front of him, were some hastily scratched drawings and some more ancient digicode. Although the drawings were in black charcoal, depicting some sort of... flaming rock? In the sky? Particularly, shooting past drawings of huts and figures of Scolomon.
Compared to the earlier works, it was hastily and sloppily done. Almost like graffiti. What made it worse was perhaps the hastily scrawled digicode underneath the drawing. A message from another time, although no one would know what it meant.
"It doesn't look like this is meant to be here, but this is where it ends." It was a bit abrupt, although Rinji had half a mind to believe that the murals were meant to end with the king and not the charcoal sketches.
"There's something curious about them..." He muttered. Gently, the centipede lifted his tail and scraped the black edge onto an empty patch of wall. It left behind the same dark markings.
At the end of the passage way, the trio would find a stone tomb, or coffin of sorts. The lid covering it would be about 2 inches of thick, polished rock, impossible for a single person to lift by themselves. What they'd find when or even if they'd open it... that'd be the surprise.

This was quite the revelation; not only Rinji had discovered there were more Scolomons around (albeit probably extinct), but that they have had edified their own empire to boot. It seemed mighty and glorious, that bringing another question to Amelie's mind; what had caused its downfall? It was true that no empire lasted forever, but there usually was a reason behind the collapse of any great civilization.
"Well. This answers some questions, but also asks some more." She commented, gazing at the painting of the pharaoh. "I don't think they did that to be artistic, but there's the real possibility that this Scolomon used, well... the digital equivalent of makeup?"
Yeah, it wasn't the most inspired of ideas, but one thing was for sure; in ancient Egypt, that's the resource the ruling body used to stand out in comparison to the 'plebeians'. "Or maybe that was an armor. Not like an exoskeleton, but actual armor, tailor-made specifically for him? Maybe that result could be achieved by mixing some alloys of chrome digizoid... at least if the smiths of the empire were really skilled. If that really is armor, the craftsmanship must've been impeccable."
Maybe she was giving them too much credit and this was a hypothesis, but form-fitting armor capable of adapting to the sinuous moves of a centipede was something that would take a fair amount of time and effort, even with the current techniques available in the Digital World. "I think it would look great on you, Rin-Rin."
Yup, an offhanded comment. But she was just voicing out her thoughts! And not like the brunette had enough time to be in the clouds, anyway; the next discovery in her dear friend's part was no less amazing, even if quite a bit direr.
"I'd say that somebody was desperate to at least leave... a record of how everything ended, at least by the look of it. I guess the flaming rock had played a part in how this civilization ended. That's a... bit of a shame."
Unceremoniously, she gently placed her hands by the bottom of the drawing, those staining themselves pitch black in the process. A natural disaster of mythic proportions seemed like something that could fit the bill. Yet... there was something else.
After the abrupt end of the charcoal drawings, and after straining her sight by quite a bit, Amy could discern a large set of doors some distance ahead. "It seems like that's the next chamber, and considering how big that thing is, I'd risk guessing that there is where we'll find out if there are zombies in here or not."

"...I don't imagine that was a very...nice experience, being the only one of your kind there...But at the same time, you're unique. I still think you are." Coolmon stated, quite plainly. "I mean...I've met other Cutemon but...they're..." She trailed off.
Nothing like her.
Regardless, she continued to follow Rinji and Amelie. "I'm assuming part of it's meant for artistic purposes, but given how some Digimon turn out looking? It could very well be a actual interpretation of the King's appearance...And, as Amelie said? It must've been quite the sight to see in person. I think it'd look cool both in concept and execution, honestly...Hey, Rinji, you should totally invest in some armor!" The story of the Scolomon continued, though. It continued for a short while longer before it ended with...
A meteor.
A drawing of one, at least. Coolmon felt some deja vu, looking over the hastily scrawn Digicode. Was the author...dying as they wrote this? "...Perhaps...This was where his legacy ended? Actually, no. It likely was. Coolmon stared at the drawing for a few moments. Meteors. One could find a certain...finality to them, really...She glanced to the doors ahead, before glancing to her compatriots. "Only one way to find out, friends!" She grinned, proceeding onwards to open the door into the tomb.

What the trio had discovered in this pyramid was turning out to be a real find. The things they were learning from the former empire of Scolomons... Coolmon had been right; there was a lot to learn from the past.
Such as the use of either armour or make-up. Both were interesting ideas, so much so that Rinji listened in stark silence as Amelie explained them to him. As she finished, he blushed at the compliment. Or at least he would've, if he weren't already glowing.
"I've never thought of wearing armour," he admitted shyly in response. "If I had the money, maybe it'd be worth it to commission some." It was really only a vague idea and one of those things done just for fun. "Digimon used to make armour for each other when they went to war," he added factually. "It's rare to see it these days though."
Yet it was always still possible to find those that specialised in outdated arts, such as armour smithing. They were just that much harder to find.
Much like his own species. In a way, according to Coolmon, she was the same too. "Well... I think you're the best Cutemon." He tilted his head and smiled. "Because you're cool."
"Hey, these drawings," Rinji started, "do you really think this is where everything ended? It's kind of sad..." The thought of being the last of their kind in a dying civilisation, if that's what the drawing suggested, was somewhat melancholy. "I hope they got away."
Finally, Rinji peeled himself away from the last drawing and joined his friends. Together, they followed each other deeper into the dusty old tomb, revealing the way with pink and red lights. Apprehension of what lay behind the stone doors framed Rinji's face.
The jokes about zombies and skeletons were really starting to get to him.
