Beams of sunlight shine through the leaves above on this quiet afternoon in the Server Woods. It was peaceful and nostalgic for Toki as he walked along the path. This particular area looked somewhat familiar, actually. As he looked around, it hit him. This was where he first made contact with his spirit while helping Tetsu search for his Digimon, Gryz. It was the beginning of his adventure in the Digital World. How long ago had it been? How far has he come since that day almost a year ago? He placed a hand to his chest and closed his eyes as he remembered that fateful day.
His spirit had appeared to him that day with the promise of helping him find balance within his life in a time where he was so troubled and confused with his life. What happened afterwards was something of a blank as his first Spirit Evolution was mostly his body on auto pilot. By the end of it he had fallen unconscious and carried back to the Village of Beginnings.
He couldn’t help but chuckle to himself as he thought about not being able to control the base form that well. Now he could run marathons in that form for fun without losing too much energy. “I can’t believe it’s almost been a year since we’ve met. It’s kind of incredible how much someone can change in that time. I was meek, shy, crippled by guilt over things I had done…and now here I am, trying to be some kind of Digital World superhero. Do you think I’m trying too hard?” he asked his spirit.
His spirit manifested as Antylamon near him, shaking its head “Not at all, Toki. Your boundless optimism for others and your desire to make those around you comfortable and safe is a trait that so many could learn from. Ever since our Beast Spirit incident, you’ve grown from this young man who fears dragging people down to someone who genuinely values the love and support of others. Words cannot express how much it means to me to see you learn these things. It is…something many people have difficulties coming to terms with, especially many Digimon. From the glimpses of my past that I can remember, there were many who firmly believed in the survival of the fittest and the only way to get stronger was to destroy every enemy you came across. That isn’t true and never has been. Even today there are Digimon who struggle to find another path. But if we keep doing what we are doing, soon others will see that strength can come from the people who support you and care for you.”
Toki smiled brightly and leaned against a tree “I whole-heartedly agree. Part of me wishes I understood that sooner…but the past is the past. All I can do now is look forward. Funny how a place from your past can spark a conversation like this, huh?”
“Indeed. Oh! I have an idea. Why don’t you call your father and Aylin to meet you here? For a picnic. I think it would be a nice way to reconnect and reflect on things.”
Silent for a moment, Toki would eventually nod “Yeah…you’re right. I’m still trying to come to terms with how I’ve thought of my dad, though. And the secrets he kept about the Digital World…”
“You could ask him. Nothing about what happened was your fault nor was it his. You’re family. Please…try. This is important for both of you.”
“Thank you. I truly mean that. Alright, I’ll contact them both.” Toki said with a smile and set about contacting both his father and Aylin to meet him at this location the next day. Now was the matter of what to bring on the picnic. He had some preparations to do, so he opened a portal back home to get ready.
Upon returning to the Human World, Toki spent the rest of the day shopping. He and his dad used to have genuinely fond moments of simply relaxing and drinking fresh green tea, so he made sure to buy some water and tea pouches along with something to put a kettle on over a campfire. “Let’s see…” he mumbled to himself. “Rice bento with salmon…mmh, sounds good.” He nodded, buying a few boxes. Some with salmon, some with takoyaki…he got some packaged red bean paste buns for snacks as well. Once he was all set up, he looked up at the orange sky, some stars already twinkling away. “This will be good for me. I haven’t had a chance to really talk with dad in a while.”
Once his preparations were complete, he went back to his apartment and set everything aside for tomorrow. “You know, deep down, even in my anger, I respected my dad. He’s a great teacher and martial artist and so many people love his dojo back in Ishikawa. With the Digital World I don’t really know if I’ll be able to succeed him…what if I disappoint him?”
“I am sure that’s not the case, Toki. I’m sure he’s proud. You don’t have to revolve your life around the Digital World, you know…with your portal you can return whenever you want.”
“Hm…yeah. Actually, maybe I can run my own dojo in the Digital World. We can help others learn how to defend themselves and use their moves better…become stronger without having to do anything like loading data…”
“I think that’s a great idea…but it would be a lot of work. We would need support and of course, people willing to join.”
“I know…but I think it’s something we can do. I want to at least give it a try. We’ll see if we can get some advice from dad tomorrow. Let’s just get some sleep.” He said. He lied down in bed and immediately fell asleep.
The next day, Toki waited for the correct time to transfer over to the Digital World so they could arrive at roughly the same time. “Alright…we should be good to go soon.” Once he got the message from his dad, he opened a portal and stepped through just in time.
Now he was back in Server Woods. His dad and his Digimon, who was a Gaomon as a Rookie, waved to him. Toki took a deep breath and smiled, getting things set up, starting with getting some wood for a fire “Hey dad! Is everything going well back home?” he asked.
Yosuke, his father, nodded “Great, in fact. We just got some new students just last week and they’re showing a lot of promise. Some are there because they just want to fight, but don’t you worry, they’ll either leave or learn their lesson.” He chuckled.
Toki laughed “I honestly wished I listened to your teachings a bit more...oh right, I wanted to talk to you about something, but I wanted to wait until…”
Before he could finish his thought, a Lunamon ran into view with a large backpack, clearly looking exhausted “A-am I late?!” she asked, sitting down with a heavy sigh. How she carried that bag was a question that will likely never be answered.
Toki shook his head “You’re right on time Aylin! Here, let me get tea going.” He started the campfire after arranging some good pieces of firewood and set up a metal stand to place the kettle on. As he poured the water and set the tea pouch inside, he sat back before taking out several boxes and handing them out “I brought plenty for everyone, so dig in!” he said with a smile.
Aylin took her food with glee “Oh wow I was starving! Thanks!” she sat down with everyone and began eating happily. “Mm. Toki, are you and your spirit feeling okay? We haven’t seen each other in a while so I was kind of worried…”
“Yeah, we’re fine. Oh! You’re carrying a lot of stuff there. Got any more archaeology jobs recently? Tell me about them.”
Aylin smiled brightly “Yes! I just got back from a really successful job.” She didn’t want to mention the whole story and bring down the mood. “I met some really great people out there. Amazingly strong too. We got some really good maps of Elysium, so hopefully future expeditions will go even better.”
Toki was ecstatic to hear that his friend was doing so well “That’s great news! Hey, if you need help with any of those don’t hesitate to call me alright? I’d love to go one of these days.”
Aylin smiled “Aw thank you. Of course I’ll contact you if I need help!”
Yosuke chuckled “You’ve come a long way in a few short months haven’t you, Toki? From insisting you shoulder everything alone to advocating teamwork. I’m proud of you.”
Toki blushed “Well it’s all because I had another wake-up call with the Beast Spirit. I’m just glad you and Ignatius didn’t have to get involved.”
Ignatius laughed “To be honest, I am glad too! But only because you would likely still be in pain if I had jumped in!” he boasted, only for Yosuke to roll his eyes a bit.
“What he means is, he’s glad you’re okay. And I am too…so you wanted to talk to us all about something?”
“Oh, right…uh…I want…” he hesitated for a moment “I want to form a dojo here in the Digital World. Even if it’s a traveling thing. I want to have a place where people can come to in order to find new ways to better themselves both mentally and physically. There are so many that are scared of the changes in the world right now…I want to show them the beauty in some of these changes and how they can open new avenues to strength and understanding.”
There was a bit of a silence before Yosuke clapped his hands “Amazing. Absolutely amazing. You’ve done it…” he wiped a few tears from his eyes “You’ve found what you want to do with what you’ve been given…I promise you, Toki…I will help you however I can.”
Aylin was bouncing up and down with excitement “Me too! Oh gosh! Wow, I’ll help spread the word! Please let me help!” she pleaded.
Toki’s eyes widened at their support, but he smiled brightly “I…wow, I don’t know what to say, everyone…it…it might take me some time to get things ready, but I think this is what I need to do to help the Digital World…and the Human World.”
Everyone nodded at Toki, accepting his decision. Though…the tea was boiling over “Oh no!” Toki quickly but cautiously took the kettle off and sighed, pouring everyone a cup “Really…thank you everyone. Hey, dad? Does mom know about the Digital World?” he asked, genuinely curious.
Yosuke sipped his tea “Yes, she does. Whether or not she’ll return here anytime soon I can’t say. We both had some hardships during our adventures here…which is why we were so scared of telling you, Toki. We didn’t want you to be hurt…”
Toki nodded “I…I accept that’s what you both wanted. I understand…but now this is a family legacy, I suppose. We’re connected to this world…just as it’s connected to us.”
Ignatius raised a fist into the air “Such a poetic response! I am moved! So moved!”
Aylin giggled “It’s…amazing to see humans who care so much about both sides. I appreciate that, Toki.”
Yosuke nodded “As do I. Now…it’s a beautiful day. Let’s enjoy our meal among friends. It’s been far too long since we’ve had food together.”
Toki smiled “Yes…let’s.” he said. Finally, he felt connected with everyone again, especially his father. His biggest fear that he may never reconnect has completely disappeared. Now, with a clear goal in mind for the future, Toki ate with his friends and kept a positive outlook for the future. There were people who needed him just as much as he needed them. Life was looking positive…and if it wasn’t, then he would fight to the last in order to bring hope and optimism back.
