Birds could be hear chirping from outside the window. Sunlight was shinning through the curtains and hit the face of the young woman. Sam opened her eyes to welcome the new day. She stirred a little and looked out the window. She didn’t really have any plans for the day, but it felt like today was going to be a good day.
“Good morning.” A voice said as an arm wrapped around her. Sam froze. There wasn’t supposed to be anyone in her room with her, and it wasn’t a voice she immediately recognized but it did seem somewhat familiar. She turned to see a young man’s face staring back at her. Sam jumped out of bed and was finally able to get a really good look at the person in the bed with her. It was Keisuke, one of the main bullies she had back in school. He was two years older and graduated before her. She hadn’t seen or heard anything about him after he had graduated, but why was he in her bed now? A feeling on her finger caused her to hold up her hand. Wrapped around one of her fingers was a ring… a diamond ring. “W-what…is…. this….?” She asked, very confused.
“It’s your wedding ring, silly.” Keisuke explained, sitting up in the bed. Luckily, he was wearing a shirt and Sam wasn’t sure what she would’ve done if not. “We have been married for two years now.”
Two years? There was no way. That would mean she was twenty now. She shook her head and darted into the bathroom and closed the door. She looked at her reflection in the mirror. Her face showed signs of aging, but how could that be? She was just eighteen a few hours ago. She also noticed that she was wearing a pink silk gown, which wasn’t something she typically wore to bed. Sam was trying to figure out how this was possible, when she heard a knock on the bathroom door.
“Sam? Are you okay?”
“I-I’m fine!” She called back. The young girl cleaned herself up and opened up the door. Keisuke was smiling down at her. He looked just as Sam remembered him, dark hair and dark eyes. He patted his wife on the head. “I’m going to take a shower, want to join me?” He asked with a big smile on his face.
“No thank you!” She exclaimed, moving out of the way so he could get into the bathroom. The young man just shrugged before walking into the bathroom and closing the door. Soon the water from the shower was going and Sam took the opportunity to look around. The pictures around the room did in fact, indicate they were married. She saw some of them on their wedding day, as well as some from dates they had gone on. How did she not remember any of this?
Sam opened up the curtains to bring more light into the room. Off in the distance… was that the Statue of Liberty? She was back in New York? They must’ve moved her after getting married. Once she heard the water stop, Sam quickly darted out of the bedroom and closed the door. She was caught off guard by the apartment. It was a nicer one, indicating they were living in a more well-off part of town. Keisuke must’ve had a really good job, because Sam was sure that she was a stay at home wife.
“What’s for breakfast?” A voice asked behind her. She turned to see Keisuke, dressed in a black suit. He opened the fridge and took out a on-the-go yogurt. Guess she didn’t need to make anything after all. “We’re still on for, later right? I only need to go the office for a few hours so we should be able to make the reservation. I’ll see you then.” He kissed Sam’s forehead and was out the door before the young woman could get any words out. She was left standing in the kitchen, confused and dumbfounded.
The apartment was quiet, which was strange. There should be something else making noise. Hawk! Where was her Digimon? She searched frantically around the apartment, no Digimon to be found. Not even her Digivice was laying out anywhere. Had she not met Hawk? Was that possible? Sam leaned against the wall and fell to the floor. Since she had never met Hawk… did that mean she had never met Desmond either? After all, she had met him on her first trip to the Digital World. This was all becoming too complicated for her. She buried her face into her knees and began to cry. Everyone that meant so much to her was now gone.
After a while, Sam was able to pick herself up and take a shower. Once she was out and tried to decide what to wear, she couldn’t help but just stare at all the clothes in her closet. She didn’t normally wear anything like them, but it was all she had to work with. She grabbed a tank top, some skinny jeans and boots. She barely recognized herself in the mirror, after putting the outfit on. She didn’t really know what she was supposed to be doing with Keisuke later, but hoped the outfit would be appropriate enough.
Sam hung around the apartment a while before a cell phone on the coffee table lit up from a text message. She picked it up and saw it was a text from Keisuke, telling her where to meet him later. She didn’t recognize the address, but cabs were big in New York and surely one would know where to go. She locked the door behind her and made her way to the elevator. As she waited for it to hit the ground floor, Sam couldn’t help but no feel like herself. Usually she would be fidgeting and red, if she even went out at all. How could she be so confident in herself? She had never felt this way before.
The young woman closed the door to the cab after it dropped her off at the meeting place. It was some sort of garden, with a rainbow of flowers everywhere. It was truly beautiful and it took Sam’s breath away. As she walked around the park, Sam couldn’t help but feel like something was slipping away. Unknown to her, it was her memory. The longer she stayed in this alternate reality, the more of her memory from the other disappeared. She was slowly forgetting everything and everyone, the memories to be replaced by the ones from this world. Along with forgetting everything, her personality was starting to change as well. Her shy, quiet self was now becoming someone a little more upbeat and outgoing.
It didn’t take Sam long to find Keisuke. He was standing next to a fountain. Had he always been that good looking? She may not have noticed it because of all the bullying he did back in high school. He spotted his wife and waved her over. “You look really nice today.” He told her with a big smile on his face. Seeing that brought a smile to Sam’s face as well. She knew today was going to be a good day.
After walking around for a few hours, Sam and Keisuke came to a stop at the same fountain they had met at earlier. Keisuke was holding her hand as he gazed at the fountain. “This is where I asked you to marry me, remember?”
“I do.” Sam replied. Wait, did she? The memory was foggy, but she could kind of remember him proposing to her. He turned to face his wife, the smile still on his face. His hand reached up and was placed on her cheek. He was leaning in to kiss her, and then his lips met her. The kiss was nice… but something seemed off. It was missing something… but what was it? She struggled to figure it out, when a face appeared in her mind. He looked to be in his twenties, with blond hair and glasses. She knew that face from somewhere, but where?
Her eyes jolted open as she finally remembered the face. Desmond… The guy she had shared her first kiss with and someone she had really developed feelings for. It was then that all her memories were coming back to her. Desmond…. Hawk…. and the Digital World. She pushed Keisuke away, leaving the poor guy looking confused. “T-this isn’t right.” She said quietly. An even bigger smile came to the young man’s lips as he leaned over to whisper in her ear. “So, you’ve figured it out, huh? This reality doesn’t exist.” He paused briefly. “But don’t worry…. Someday you will forget about everyone and only think of me. Then you’ll be mine.”
Sam shot up after hearing those words, breathing heavily. She was back in her room at home, and back to being eighteen again. The sound of snoring caused her to turn and see a Hawkmon sleeping at the foot of her bed. The whole thing must’ve been a dream, but it felt so real. Her face grew warm as she remembered everything. She made a deal with herself to never tell anyone about what had happened.
